Spain to join Norway, Ireland in recognising Palestinian state

Spain is set to announce its recognition of an independent Palestinian state, sources said on Wednesday.

Already, Norway and Ireland have announced their recognition of a Palestinian state, with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere saying on Wednesday that the recognition “is in the hope that this will help bring peace with Israel”.

European Union members Slovenia and Malta have also indicated in recent weeks that they plan to make the recognition, arguing a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace in the region.

“In the middle of a war, with tens of thousands of dead and injured, we must keep alive the only thing that can provide a safe home for both Israelis and Palestinians: two states that can live in peace with each other,” Stoere told a news conference.

Before the announcement, some 143 out of 193 member-states of the United Nations recognised a Palestinian state.

European countries have approached the issue differently.

Some, like Sweden, recognised a Palestinian state a decade ago, while France is not planning to do so unless it can be an effective tool to make progress toward peace.

The moves come as Israeli forces have led assaults on the northern and southern edges of the Gaza Strip in May, causing a new exodus of hundreds of thousands of people, and sharply restricting the flow of aid, raising the risk of famine.

Non-EU member Norway has long said it would recognise Palestine as a country only if it could have a positive impact on the peace process, in step with what the United States has said on the issue.

Norway is a close U.S. ally, and the Nordic country has sought to help broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians on several occasions in recent decades.

  • Why Pep Guardiola will never coach Spain

Why Pep Guardiola will never coach Spain

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will never consider taking the Spain job.

That’s according to his biographer, Marti Perarnau, who has just published his third book on the former Barcelona coach.

“I don’t think due to sporting reasons (he would choose not to coach in Spain), but social reasons, yes,” Peranau told Marca, referring to Guardiola’s Catalan activism. “Because political reasons within football would make little sense.

“You don’t manage a team because of politics, that is, because you are favourable to this or that person’s policy. I think I would rule it out more for social reasons.

“There is an obvious rejection, there is a very significant part of the Spanish people who think differently than Pep and, therefore, there is a rejection, but it is social. I don’t think it’s political.”

He also said: “I also don’t think it would enter the mind of the Spanish Federation to have him, but for the same reason.

“It would be provoking an unnecessary conflict, neither one side nor the other wants that.

“Why are you going to get into that mess? That’s how I see it.”

  • Why LaLiga should be reduced to 14 teams – Pique

Why LaLiga should be reduced to 14 teams – Pique

Andorra FC owner Gerard Pique says the LaLiga needs to be reduced.

The Barcelona great argues there are too many games being played in a season.

He said, “In the end, the sport is moving towards shorter and more unique competitions. The clear example is the NLF, there are four months of competition and the country is paralysed. You have record ratings. I think football should go in that direction.

“We need all the organisations to get together and say: ‘it’s not possible for there to be 80 games in a year.’ There are too many games and people don’t even know what is being played. And then on a sporting level the level drops.

“We would need a calendar with fewer matches which would however be more competitive. Instead of leagues with 20 teams, move to 16 or even 14.”

  • Shakira pays  $7.2 million in another  Spain tax fraud case

Shakira pays  $7.2 million in another  Spain tax fraud case

Colombian superstar Shakira has paid 6.6 million euros ($7.2 million) to a Spanish court investigating her for unpaid taxes, her agent said Friday, just days after she reached a deal to avoid trial in another tax case.

Spanish prosecutors in July opened a second case against the 46-year-old singer, accusing her of using a network of companies, some of them based in tax havens, to cheat Spain’s tax office out of some 6.6 million euros in 2018, including interest and adjustments.

Shakira paid the court in August, the agency that represents her told AFP, confirming a report in daily newspaper El Periodico.

The 6.6-million-euro payment does not imply either the singer’s guilt or innocence in the case, but is “another demonstration of her willingness to repay her possible debts to the Spanish tax authorities”, the newspaper said.

Separately, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer Monday reached a last-minute settlement with Spanish prosecutors to avoid trial for tax fraud on income she earned between 2012 and 2014.

As part of that deal Shakira agreed to pay a fine of 7.3 million euros, equal to 50 percent of the amount of unpaid tax.

She had already paid 17.45 million euros to the Spanish tax authorities to settle her situation in this case.

The singer, who had previously rejected a deal offered by prosecutors, said in a statement she had settled “with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight”.

Shakira moved to Miami with her two sons in April following her split from former FC Barcelona star defender Gerard Pique.

  • Shakira to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud

Shakira to stand trial in Spain for tax fraud

Colombian pop idol Shakira is set to go on trial in Barcelona on Monday for allegedly cheating Spain’s tax office out of 14.5 million euros.

Prosecutors are seeking a jail term of eight years and two months, and a fine of nearly 24 million euros ($24 million dollars) for the 46-year-old singer, who now lives in Miami with her two sons Milan and Sasha.

She has denied any wrongdoing and turned down a plea deal with prosecutors, paving the way for the trial which is set to get underway on Monday at 10:00 am (0900 GMT).

The case centres on where the singer, whose hit singles include “Hips Don’t Lie”, “Whenever, Wherever” and the 2010 World Cup song “Waka Waka”, lived between 2012 and 2014.

Prosecutors allege Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll — dubbed the Queen of Latin Pop — spent more than half of that period in Spain and should have paid taxes in the country.

They say she moved to Spain after her relationship with FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique became public in 2011, but maintained official tax residency in the Bahamas until 2015.

In its indictment, the prosecution claims that Shakira “used a set of companies” based in tax havens “with the intention of not paying” tax in Spain.

Shakira’s lawyers say that until 2014, she was leading a “nomadic life” and earned most of her money from international tours and that she only moved permanently to Barcelona just before the birth of her second son in January 2015.

The high-profile trial is expected to hear from nearly 120 witnesses and to run until December 14.

While the singer is expected to testify during the opening session of the trial, she may request permission from the court to not be present at the remaining hearings.

Even without her presence, details of her private life will likely emerge during the proceedings, since Spanish prosecutors carried out a meticulous investigation to prove their case.

They interviewed her neighbours, tracked her images on social networks, checked her payments at hairdressers and even the health clinic she attended during her pregnancy to prove their accusation.

    ‘Not a UN Diplomat’

Questions about the singer’s finances have been raised before. The diva was named in the 2021 “Pandora Papers” leaks, which revealed the wealth and tax avoidance strategies of the global rich, in her case relating to her residence in the Bahamas.

The trial comes after Shakira had a big night at the Latin Grammy Awards held in Seville in southern Spain on Thursday, where she performed twice and picked up three awards, including for song of the year and best pop song for her collaboration with Argentine DJ Bizarrap on “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53”.

The track takes swipes at her former partner Pique — the couple broke up last year after a decade-long relationship — and includes a reference to being left with a “debt to the tax office”. It has been played almost 1.5 billion times on Spotify and YouTube.

“People on my team tried to convince me to change the lyrics, but I’m not a UN diplomat. I am an artist and, above all, a woman,” Shakira said in an interview published in Spanish celebrity magazine ¡Hola! in which she made no reference to her looming trial.

One of the highlights of the Latin Grammys was her rendition of her ballad “Acróstico”. Wearing a glittering gold high-cut gown adorned with an image of the Virgin Mary, the singer performed the song, with her two sons which she had with Pique appearing in a pre-recorded video on screen to join her in singing it.

The forward signed on loan for Getafe from United on deadline day in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old, per Relevo, is now looking for a property in the area for himself, his partner, and his recently born son.

He is reportedly searching for a family home in the upmarket Boadilla del Monte district in the city of Madrid.

Many high earners choose the neighborhood because of its amenities and the standard of living.

The area is also extremely secluded, which would give Greenwood the privacy he is likely to be seeking.

  • World Cup Kiss: FIFA suspends FA president, Luis Rubiales for 90 days

World Cup Kiss: FIFA suspends FA president, Luis Rubiales for 90 days

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has suspended Spanish Football Association (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales from football-related activities for ninety days after he kissed Jenni Hermoso at the Women’s World Cup final.

This is coming less than a day after Rubiales said at a press conference on Friday that he would not resign his position in the face of criticism for kissing Hermoso on the lips.

According to FIFA, Rubiales will stay off football related activities for 90 days pending when investigation would be concluded.

Recall that many female and male players like Borja Iglesias and David de Gea spoke out against Rubiales’ conduct.

They also called for him to quit his role, and now FIFA’s own disciplinary committee has acted.

The suspension, which commences today (Saturday) and will last for at least 90 days, has been delivered under the powers of Article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).

As part of this latest sanction, Rubiales has been told he must “refrain, through himself or third parties, from contacting or attempting to contact the professional player of the Spanish national football team Ms. Jennifer Hermoso or her close environment.”

FIFA’s statement added: “FIFA reiterates its absolute commitment to respect the integrity of all persons and therefore condemns with the utmost vigour any behaviour to the contrary.”

  • ‘I made a mistake’- Spanish soccer chief apologizes for giving Women’s World Cup winner a kiss on lips

‘I made a mistake’- Spanish soccer chief apologizes for giving Women’s World Cup winner a kiss on lips

Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales has admitted he “made a mistake” by giving Spain star Jennifer Hermoso a surprise kiss on the lips after the 33-year-old received her gold medal following the team’s Women’s World Cup final victory over England on Sunday.

Rubiales has faced widespread criticism for the incident, with politicians and journalists labeling his behavior “unacceptable” and “simply disgusting.”

“There’s an event, which I have to regret, which is everything that happened between the player and I, with a magnificent relationship between the two of us, the same as with the others,” the RFEF boss said in a video statement.

“And well, I surely made a mistake, I have to recognize that. In a moment of elation, without any intention of bad faith, well, what happened happened – I think in a very spontaneous way. I repeat, there was no bad faith between either of the two of us.

“Here, we didn’t understand it because we saw something natural, normal and in no way, I repeat, with bad faith. But outside of the bubble, it looks like it has turned into a storm and so, if there are people who have felt offended, I have to say I’m sorry.”

Rubiales was on stage for FIFA’s awards ceremony following the final, along with other dignitaries, including soccer’s world governing body president Gianni Infantino, Spain’s Queen Letizia and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Video shows Rubiales embracing Hermoso, then putting both hands on her head before kissing her. He then pats her on the back as she walks away.

“Hey, I didn’t like it, eh,” says Hermoso as she apparently answers questions about the incident in an Instagram live video – a clip of which was shared by Spanish journalist Irati Vida on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Later in the Instagram live video – taken in Spain’s locker room – Hermoso fields a question from another woman: “But what were you doing, sis?” The 33-year-old replies: “But what am I supposed to do?”

On the radio program ‘El Tiempo de Juego’ on Cadena COPE, Hermoso spoke of the kiss on Sunday, saying “she didn’t expect it” but that “it was because of the emotion of the moment, there’s nothing more there. It’s just going to be an anecdote [of the time]. I’m absolutely sure it won’t be blown up more.”

Asked by Radio Marca about the incident with Hermoso, Rubiales replied: “The kiss with Jenni? There are idiots all over. When two people have a moment of affection without any importance, we can’t listen to idiocy. We’re champions and I stay with that.”

In his apology, Rubiales acknowledged he should “be more careful” when representing the RFEF as president at ceremonies and other important events.

He also followed up on his “idiocy” remark, explaining he saw it that way because “within the bubble, no one gave it the slightest bit of importance, but well, outside they have, right?

“So I also want to say sorry to these people because I understand that, if outside it was seen in a different light, surely they have their reasons,” he added.

Rubiales finished by saying he was “hurt” that this incident has cast a shadow over the team’s victory, describing it as one of the country’s greatest sporting successes.

“I think that we have to give all of the merit to these women, to the team led by Jorge Vilda and we have to celebrate it to the skies as much as we can,” he said.

    Mounting criticism
On Monday, Spanish political party SUMAR called for Rubiales’ resignation, while Spain’s Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta, told RTVE that the kiss was “unacceptable.”

“I think it’s unacceptable to kiss a player on the lips to congratulate her. And as far as I’ve seen … I think it has to be said. We all deserve respect,” Iceta said. “I think, first of all, what he has to do is give an explanation and show his reasoning. I think that’s the logical and rational thing.”

After Spain’s victory on Sunday, Alberto Ortega, of the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, posted on X that, “Rubiales taking the trophy from the players to give it to Queen Leticia and kissing Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth is simply disgusting.”

“A new demonstration of the need to suck the camera [be the center of attention] and be the protagonist when it is not his turn,” added Ortega.
