Olga Carmona‘s goal made the difference between the two teams and, although England rallied in the second half after Spain missed a penalty to double its lead, ultimately, the brave Lionesses could not find the back of the net.

It could have been an even more comfortable win for Spain as England goalkeeper Mary Earps came up huge with several acrobatic saves throughout the match.

Enroute to Final England won all its games while Spain lost 4-0 to Japan in the group stage but still found a way to reach the finals.

  • Swiss brush up attacking plan for knockout game against Spain

Swiss brush up attacking plan for knockout game against Spain

Coach Inka Grings says the Swiss Women Football team have worked intensively this week on the offensive part of their game.

Switzerland kept a clean sheet through the group stage of the Women’s World Cup but only scored two goals through three games.

“This was definitely one of our focus points this week . . . it was something that we analysed intensively.

“We talked through with the team and also take the offensive players, assertive players, bring them more into the team,” Grings told a news conference on Friday.

Switzerland take on Spain in a FIFA Women’s World Cup Round of 16 game at Auckland’s Eden Park on Saturday.

Grings’ 20th-ranked squad topped Group A in their second World Cup appearance, with a 2-0 win over the Philippines and scoreless draws with Norway and New Zealand.

“Of course we have to be more assertive in that run towards the goal,” Grings said.

“We have really understood that message and we have helped to convey that with videos.

“I can also read from the body language from the players that it’s been quite an intensive week.”

Sixth-ranked Spain, considered the favourites on Saturday, albeit in a tournament of numerous upsets so far, kicked off their campaign by beating Zambia and Costa Rica by a combined score of 8-0.

But Japan ran roughshod over La Roja in a 4-0 victory to cap the group stage.

“(Spain) have shown us weaknesses that we have analysed intensively with our team, however (Saturday) of course is a different match,” Grings said.

“Spain has very strong players. We don’t want to focus and shouldn’t focus on just one player. We look at them as a compact and strong team.”

The Swiss were ousted in the round of 16 in their only other World Cup appearance in 2015.

The winner of Saturday’s match will play the winner of the Netherlands and South Africa next Thursday.

Lusito also played for Italy giant, Inter Milan, he was regarded as one of the greatest Spanish footballers of all-time.

  • Spain win UEFA Nations league after beating Croatia 5-4 on penalties

Spain win UEFA Nations league after beating Croatia 5-4 on penalties

Spain cruised home to victory after Dani Carvajal chipped home a Panenka penalty to win the Nations League on Sunday, with a 5-4 shoot out victory over Croatia, following a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of a tension soaked encounter.

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon denied Lovro Mayer and Bruno Petkovic from the spot, before Carvajal cheekily chipped home to earn La Roja their first trophy since Euro 2012 and break Croatian hearts.

Zlatko Dalic’s side, runners-up at the World Cup in 2018 and third in 2022, have never won a major trophy and were hoping Nations League success would cap a glittering international career for captain Luka Modric.

The victory is a confidence boost for new Spain coach Luis de la Fuente after heavy criticism in March after a defeat by Scotland in Euro 2024 qualifying. It also avenged their 2021 final defeat by France.

Dalic warned over 25,000 Croatian fans were expected to travel to Rotterdam and they filled the majority of the stadium, De Kuip a sea of red and white checkered squares, save for a modest area of Spanish fans.

The Croatians chanted Modric’s name in the 10th minute, matching his shirt number, a plea for him not to retire from international duty after the tournament, as had been rumoured.

On the pitch Spain made the early running, with Gavi drilling narrowly wide after pressing furiously to win the ball back.

Just when the game started to fall into a slight lull, under the pink haze of smoke from Croatian flares, Spain were nearly caught out by Josip Juranovic’s long ball over the top for Andrej Kramaric.

  • Spain becomes 1st country in Europe to allow menstrual leave

Spain becomes 1st country in Europe to allow menstrual leave

Spain’s sexual and reproductive health law, which includes the right for women to take time off work when they have their period, came into effect on Thursday.

The Gender Equality Ministry’s bill, put forward by the left-wing government, was approved by parliament in February.

Since then, amendments were passed as part of the new law.

Barriers have been removed which make access to abortions and changing the gender of trans people easier.

After the parliamentary vote in February, Equality Minister Irene Montero spoke of a “historic day for the advancement of feminist rights.”

Menstrual leave is not a common regulation.

There is no comparable provision in German law.

In Taiwan, women can only stay at home for three days a year, and they then only get 50 per cent of their salary.

In South Korea, employers have to give their female employees one day off a month if they make a request, but the law does not regulate who pays the employee’s salary.

To take menstrual leave, female workers in Spain require a doctor’s note.

The duration of the leave from work is in principle unlimited.

According to the law, it depends on how severe the menstrual pain is and how long it lasts.

The costs are covered by the state.

  • Three Nigerians Extradited from UK and Spain to Face Fraud Charges

Three Nigerians Extradited from UK and Spain to Face Fraud Charges

The U.S. Department of Justice says three Nigerian nationals were extradited to the Southern District of Florida to face federal charges related to allegations that they operated an international fraud scheme.

In a press release by the department of Public Affairs on Friday April 28, revealed that Kennedy Ikponmwosa, was extradited from Spain and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edwin G. Torres on April 18. Iheanyichukwu Jonathan Abraham and Jerry Chucks Ozor were extradited from the United Kingdom and will make their initial appearances before U.S. Magistrate Judge Eduardo I. Sanchez on Monday, May 1, in Miami.

According to the statement, Ikponmwosa, 51, Ezennia Peter Neboh, 48, and Prince Amos Okey Ezemma, 49, of Madrid, Spain; and Abraham, 44, Ozor, 43, and Emmanuel Samuel, 39, of London, UK, face federal charges in Miami, Florida. Neboh, Ikponmwosa, Abraham, Samuel, and Ozor were arrested in April 2022 by authorities in Madrid and London, based on an indictment filed in the Southern District of Florida, and have remained incarcerated since then. Samuel pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit mail fraud and wire fraud on March 27.

The court documents said that the defendants are charged with operating an inheritance fraud scheme. Over the course of more than five years, they allegedly sent personalized letters to elderly consumers in the United States, falsely claiming that the sender was a representative of a bank in Spain and that the recipient was entitled to receive a multimillion-dollar inheritance left for the recipient by a family member who purportedly had died years before in Spain.Victims were told that, before they could receive their purported inheritance, they were required to send money for delivery fees, taxes, and payments to avoid questioning from government authorities. Victims sent money to the defendants through a complex web of U.S.-based former victims, whom the defendants convinced to serve as money mules. According to the indictment, victims who sent money never received their purported inheritance funds.

“The Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Branch will pursue and prosecute transnational criminals who defraud U.S. consumers, wherever they are located. I thank the Kingdom of Spain and the UK for their tireless efforts in assisting U.S. authorities to find and arrest these individuals so that they may face charges here in the United States,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Division.

“The Justice Department and U.S. law enforcement will continue to work closely with law enforcement partners across the globe to bring to justice criminals who attempt to defraud U.S. victims from outside the United States.”

“The U.S. Postal Inspection Service constantly strives to protect our communities from predatory criminals seeking to abuse and exploit the most vulnerable members of our society.

“These extraditions prove that by pulling law enforcement agencies together, we can best focus on investigating individuals and illicit criminal organizations associated with foreign-based fraud schemes that disproportionately affect vulnerable seniors”.

The statement noted that the defendants are all charged with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, as well as mail fraud and wire fraud.

Neboh and Samuel were both extradited earlier this year. If convicted, Ikponmwosa, Abraham, and Ozor each face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison per count. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Consumer Protection Branch, USPIS, and HSI are investigating the case.

Senior Trial Attorney Phil Toomajian and Trial Attorneys Josh Rothman and Brianna Gardner of the Justice Department’s Consumer Protection Branch are prosecuting the case.

The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, Europol, and authorities from the UK, Spain, and Portugal provided critical assistance.

The department advised individuals not to send money or provide information to unknown person.

  • Barca edge closer to 27th La Liga title

Barca edge closer to 27th La Liga title

FC Barcelona forward Ferran Torres struck late in the first half to secure a 1-0 victory over third-placed Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday.

The home side tightened their grip on top spot and moved a step closer to their 27th La Liga title.

With eight games remaining, FC Barcelona moved to 76 points and extended their lead to 11 points over second-placed Real Madrid, while Atletico remained third on 60 points.

FC Barcelona ended Atletico’s 13-game unbeaten league run thanks to a goal on the counter in the 44th minute and a fine performance by Marc Andre ter Stegen who made spectacular reflex saves from point-blank strikes by Antoine Griezmann, one in each half.

“The team worked well, the fans supported us and we won, that’s what matters.

“This victory gives us a lot of confidence going forward. Atletico were on a good run and in good shape, so that makes this win even more important for us,” Torres told reporters.

FC Barcelona, who had struggled in their last three matches in all competitions without scoring, were dominated by Atletico early in the game.

The visitors, who were on a six-game winning streak, sent the first warning early as Griezmann took advantage of poor control by Sergio Busquets on the edge of the area and unleashed an angled shot that crashed against the crossbar.

However, FC Barcelona gradually became more aggressive and took control of the game, with striker Robert Lewandowski wasting two great chances midway through the first half.

Just as FC Barcelona looked in full control, Atletico almost scored on a counter-attack led by Yannick Carrasco who ran down the left and put in a low cross for Griezmann, whose close-range strike was brilliantly stopped by Ter Stegen.

FC Barcelona got the winner when Raphinha controlled a long ball down the right channel and crossed to the edge of the area where Torres calmly slotted past goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

It was an entertaining match after the break with both teams missing several chances, including another outstanding save by Ter Stegen from a Griezmann strike and a sitter missed by Lewandowski when he was one-on-one with Oblak.

  • Sergio Ramos retires from Spain duty

Sergio Ramos retires from Spain duty

Spain’s most capped player Sergio Ramos, has announced his international retirement after being told by new coach Luis de la Fuente that he was not part of his plans.

The 36-year-old Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defender, who won the FIFA World Cup in 2010 as well as two European Championships, has not played for Spain since March 2021.

But he said he should have been given the chance to show he could still be of service to his country.

“The time has come, the time to say ‘goodbye’ to our beloved and exciting national team,” Ramos, who captained Spain 52 times, said in a statement.

“This (Thursday) morning I received the call from the current coach who told me that he doesn’t and will not count on me, regardless of the level I can show or how I continue my sports career.”

The Spanish FA (RFEF) confirmed to Reuters that the conversation between coach De la Fuente and Ramos took place on Thursday, but provided no further details.

Ramos was dropped by former Spain coach Luis Enrique and had not made an appearance since coming on as a late substitute in a 3-1 win over Kosovo in a World Cup qualifier two years ago.

“Humbly, I think that my path deserved to end because of my personal decision or if my performance was not up to the level that our national team deserve, but not because of age or other reasons,” Ramos said.

“Being young or less young is not a virtue or a defect, it is only a temporary trait that is not necessarily related to performance or ability.

“I look with admiration and envy at (Luka) Modric, (Lionel) Messi, Pepe… the essence, tradition, values, meritocracy and justice in football.

“Unfortunately, it will not happen to me because football is not always fair and football is never only about football.”

  • Suspect arrested over Spain letter bombs

Suspect arrested over Spain letter bombs

Spain Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said a suspect has been arrested two months after letter bombs in Spain were sent to several Embassies and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, among others.

The state television station RTVE and other media on Wednesday reported the police as saying that the 74-year-old man was arrested on the street in Miranda de Ebro, about 300 kilometres north of Madrid.

The Spanish government had not ruled out at the time that the series of letter bombs at the end of November could have been connected to the war in Ukraine.

A total of six items had been sent to Sánchez and to the embassies of the U.S. and Ukraine, among others.

A defence company, whose products were delivered to Ukraine, as well as Defence Minister Margarita Robles and the EU satellite centre at the Torrejón airbase had also received letter bombs.

As media reported, citing the police, the consignments contained home-made mechanisms with a relatively small amount of pyrotechnic material and with small metal balls.

However, only one device exploded causing hand injury to an employee of the Ukrainian embassy.
