Dani Alves sent to prison, Mexican club terminates his contract

A Spanish judge has ordered that Brazil football player Dani Alves be jailed on remand without bail following an alleged sexual assault of a woman in a Barcelona nightclub.

According to the regional court system on Friday, the 39-year-old who has denied any wrongdoing was taken to the Brians 1 jail outside Barcelona.

Earlier on Friday, Alves appeared before a Barcelona judge after local police detained and questioned him.

The public prosecutor had requested he be jailed without bail pending trial.

Alves’ representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

His Mexican club Pumas UNAM announced they had terminated his contract with immediate effect.

“The club reiterates its commitment to not tolerate acts by any member, whoever they may be, that go against the club’s spirit and its values,” Pumas sporting president Leopoldo Silva said.

“We cannot allow the conduct of one person to damage our work philosophy, which has been an example throughout history.”

The alleged victim had filed a complaint earlier this month and the case remains open over a crime of sexual assault, Catalonia’s court system said in a statement.

Alves had said earlier this month that he was at the club with other people but denied any such behaviour.

“I was dancing and having a good time without invading anyone’s space,” he said. “I don’t know who this lady is… How could I do that to a woman? No.”

Alves played for FC Barcelona from 2008 to 2016 and briefly returned to the LaLiga team for the 2021/2022 season.

He has played for the Brazil national team since 2006, making 126 appearances and scoring eight goals.

Brazilian defender Dani Alves was taken into custody by Spanish police on Friday as part of an investigation over alleged sexual assault, the G1 news portal reported, citing the Barcelona police.

    He denied the accusation.

Alves was taken into custody after testifying on Friday morning at a police station in Barcelona, broadcaster RTVE reported.

According to G1, the police have not said why the player was detained during the deposition and there was no initial arrest warrant against him.

Alves had previously said during an interview that he was at the nightclub but he was only dancing.

“I don’t know who that woman is, I’ve never seen her,’’ he said.

The defender, a former Barcelona player, is currently under contract at UNAM Pumas of Mexico.

Spain’s King Felipe denounces war in Ukraine in Christmas speech

Spain’s King Felipe VI has denounced the Russian war against Ukraine and its consequences in his Christmas speech to the nation.

The conflict has “already caused a level of destruction and ruin that is hard to imagine,” the monarch said in his Christmas address broadcast on radio and television on Saturday evening.

Felipe warned of the consequences of a war of “global significance” that has affected Spain’s security.

Against this backdrop, he said, Spain must “strengthen collective defence” with its allies.

At the same time, however, peace must be sought with the international community.

Democracy and the European Union are “the two pillars” on which Spain’s present and future are based, the 54-year-old explained.

But there were three main risks facing democracies today, Felipe warned: these were “division,” the “deterioration of coexistence” and the “erosion of institutions.”

In his speech, which was recorded a few days ago and lasted about 12 minutes, the head of state also spoke about the economic and energy crises as well as inflation in many countries.

Spanish families, he said, were badly affected by this.

“The rise in prices, especially food, is causing households to feel insecure,” he said.

People are having to make sacrifices, some of them very large.

BREAKING: Morocco send Spain out of Qatar 2022

Morocco beat Spain on penalties to qualify for the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar after a goalless draw.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Achraf Hakimi was the hero with a chipped penalty, qualifying Morocco for the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the very first time.

Stuck in their third for most of the game, they went close through Aguerd in the first half before surviving an onslaught.

Having just one shot in the second half, Bounou pushed away Olmo’s powerful effort before Morata missed the target with a header.

In extra time, Simon made a point-blank save from Cheddira before Sarabia hit the post with the final kick to send the match to penalties.

Spain faltered from the spot, failing to score any of their three penalties. Sarabia hit the post with Bounou saving spot-kicks from Soler and Busquets.

Morocco were cool from 12 yards. Simon saved Benoun’s effort, but composed strikes from Sabiri and Ziyech, and a chip from Hakimi sent Regragui’s side through.

Morocco are now undefeated in their last five games in the World Cup and will now play either Switzerland or Portugal in the quarter-finals.
