Qatar 2022: FIFA clears air on Japan’s controversial goal against Spain

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)  has explained why Japan’s second goal against Spain was given against Spain albeit controversially.

FIFA shown revealed the criteria used to award the goal to Japan when it seemed the ball rolled out of play for a corner kick.

The goal proved to be the only reason the Germans left early in the competition after losing out to Japan on goal difference.

Japan’s victory meant that Germany’s 4-2 win over Costa Rica was ineffective and meaningless.

Japan’s Kaoru Mitoma prevented the ball from going out of play, although initial replays suggested the ball had crossed the byline and his cross met Tanaka, who fired in from a close range.

It has taken the football governing body nearly 24 hours to produce images and video of the angles they used to determine that a goal should have been awarded, vindicating the video assistant referee who ordered that the on field decision be reversed.

However different camera angles showed that buldk of the ball had already crossed the line.

Meanwhile, the rule says the whole of the ball must cross the line .

NIS cautions Nigerians against irregular migration

After three Nigerians were rescued after they embarked on a tortuous and deadly journey to Spain, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cautioned Nigerians against irregular migration.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports three Nigerians [names withheld] stowed away on the rudder of a ship from Lagos State to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on Monday.

They were rescued and hospitalized after an 11-day journey, and Spanish police have said they must be returned to Nigeria.

To save themselves from the associated trauma, Mr Christopher Baikie, the outgoing Comptroller of Immigration in Cross River cautioned Nigerians against irregular migration.

Speaking in an interview on Tuesday in Calabar, Mr Baikie disclosed that while the NIS would continue to do its best to ensure that Nigerians get travel documents on time, citizens should always seek to travel formally.

The comptroller who is retiring from service, called for stronger synergy among security agencies and with the private sector to ensure security and prompt service delivery.

Baikie described his stay in the state as enjoyable, saying he had created bond with public and the private sectors that benefited the service.

The comptroller said that the synergy he built facilitated the construction of perimeter fence at the NIS office in Calabar by a company.

Baikie thanked all security chiefs in the state for the seamless working relationship built over the years.

Lagos to Spain: How 3 Nigerians embarked on 11-day ‘deadly’ journey on ship’s rudder

Spanish coastguard has rescued three (3) Nigerians [names withheld], who embarked on an 11-day tortuous and deadly journey, sitting on the rudder of a ship, from Lagos State, Nigeria to Spain.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the 3 Nigerians, stowed away on the rudder of the ship that arrived in the Canary Islands from Nigeria, were hospitalized immediately after they were found.

In a photograph distributed on Twitter by the coastguard on Monday, the three stowaways are shown perched on the rudder of the oil and chemical tanker, Althini II.

The 183-metre ship, sailing under a Maltese flag, arrived in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria on Monday after an 11-day voyage from Lagos in Nigeria, according to Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking website.

The migrants were taken into the port and attended to by health services, the coastguard said on Twitter.

“This afternoon, the Salvamar Nunki rescued three stowaways located on the rudder blade of the ship Althini II, anchored in the docks of the port of Las Palmas and coming from Nigeria. They have been transferred to the port and treated by health services,” a tweet by the coastguard translates.

    The tortuous and deadly journey

According to data collected from maritime tracking portals, vesselfinder.com and marinetraffic.com, the oil and chemical tanker, Althini II left Lagos on the 17th of November 2022.

TNG reports that the three Nigerians were sighted in the hull of the ship with their feet barely half a meter to the water as seen in the photo attached to the tweet above.

The place where they were found is a small space located in the upper part of the rudder blade, on the outside of the hull, under the stern, out in the open and at the mercy of any blow of the sea.

It was gathered that the three Nigerian migrants suffered moderate dehydration after surviving the eleven-day crossing of the Atlantic on the ship’s rudder.

The emergency medical assistance provided them with initial care at the sports dock, as soon as they disembarked ashore.

But they were immediately referred to Doctor Negrín Hospital (two of them) and Insular Hospital (the third), given their situation.

They must return home – Spanish police

Meanwhile, Spanish police have disclosed that the 3 Nigerians must return home. A police spokesman told Reuters on Tuesday that they would be returned to Nigeria under stowaway laws.

A Canary Islands police spokesperson said it was up to the ship’s operator to take care of stowaways, provide them with temporary accommodation and return them to their origin as soon as possible.

However, the migrants may be able to remain in Spain if they claim asylum, Helena Maleno, director of migration non-governmental organisation Walking Borders, told Reuters.

“On several previous occasions, stowaways were able to remain in Spain with political asylum,” Maleno said.

Alithini II, which is owned by Gardenia Shiptrade SA, is managed by Athens-based Astra Ship Management, according to public shipping database Equasis.

TNG reports that the Spanish-owned Canary Islands are a popular gateway for African migrants attempting to reach Europe.

However, according to the Interior Ministry, the number of migrants arriving illegally to the archipelago by sea fell 17.6% to 14,875 in the first ten months of 2022, compared to a year earlier.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that stowaways have been detected in the port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in such a dangerous part of the ship.

In November 2020, three persons were found in the rudder blade of the Ocean Princess II, a San Vincent and the Grenadines; and a month earlier, another three on the Champion Pula, another Norwegian oil tanker.

The two ships had left Lagos as well.

Qatar 2022: Spain, Germany settle for 1-1 draw in a thrilling encounter

It was a big showdown in Qatar, when two European heavyweights slugged it down for three crucial points in the second group E game of the day.

The German machine found themselves in a precarious situation following their 2-1  loss to Japan last week.

Although, a defeat will not see them eliminated from the tournament due to Costa Rica’s win over Japan, it could be terminal to their hopes of progressing to the next round.

Alvaro Morata attacks the front post and connects with Jordi Alba’s cross, poking the ball beyond Neuer for Spain’s opener in the 61st minute.

Musiala is played through on goal and the youngster goes for power rather than accuracy. Simon stands tall and makes a crucial save.

The German sensing a defeat could be dangerous pressed for a goal and eventually got one late in the match courtesy of Niclas Fullkrug.

However, luck eventually smiled on Germany when Leroy Sane pokes the ball into the Spain penalty area towards Fullkrug and Musiala.

The latter collects before letting the striker take control. He wastes no time in arrowing the ball into the roof of the net beyond the dazzled Simon for Germany’s equalizer in the 82nd minute.

The result meant Spain will top the group with 4 points while others are rooted on three points, except Germany who is sitting bottom of the table with just one point.

In the 20th minute ,Jordi Alba with a trademark cut-back to the edge of the box and Asensio is there to guide it into the bottom corner. Keylor should’ve done better but Spain won’t mind one bit.

Alba is clipped in the box. Ferran Torres converts the penalty with a right footed shot to make it 3-0 in the 3oth minute.

Spain finished the first half scoring three goals against helpless Costa Ricans.
