20 Chelsea players training away from squad – Maresca

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca does not believe it will take long to settle down his squad.

The Blues have been through a lot of change over the past few years and even this summer.

While the club focuses on selling players behind the scenes, Maresca feels he has a settled starting 11 and squad depth.

He told reporters: “It’s already the first 11 we want, already the squad that we want but the first 11 we had against City is not always going to be the same for the season. I repeat again: I am not working with 42 players.

“At this moment, I am working with 21 players. Today’s session is with 20 players. Yesterday’s session was with 21. But the other 15 or 20, they are training apart. In the USA, we had 26 or 27 players.

“Chelsea players, yes, 42 or 43, sure, but they are not working with me every day. I don’t see them so it’s not a mess like it looks from outside. Absolutely not.”

EPL: Chelsea to trim down squad ahead of next season

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is aiming to reduce his bloated squad as the new season approaches, according to the UK Telegraph.

Maresca is preparing for his debut season at Stamford Bridge, having replaced Mauricio Pochettino this summer. Inheriting a large squad, he now seeks to trim it to a manageable size.

Chelsea reportedly aims to maintain a first-team squad of around 23 or 24 outfield players.

This means several players are expected to leave either permanently or on loan.

The club’s recent £54m acquisition of Neto from Wolves marks their 12th summer signing, bringing their total spending since June 14 to £243m. This has expanded the Blues’ squad to over 50 senior players.

Mikel Arteta speaks on current Arsenal squad

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta speaks about his current squad after the end of the transfer window.

The Gunners pushed hard to prise Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa on deadline day.

Arteta said: “We had a lot of things still to do with squad. Look at the departures compared to what we’ve recruited. The club has done a phenomenal job to bring players with the profiles we wanted.

“Unfortunately Tomo [Tomiyasu] got injured in the same place last time and [Mohamed] Eleny has a long-term injury. We had to react. We tried but have to bring in the right player for team and for club but didn’t manage to do that.

“It’s the team we have. For me it’s best squad and team I have available. There is nothing else we can do. We have an academy as well that we have to use and we will try to do that the best possible way.”
