  • Four secondary school students drown at Elegushi beach

Four secondary school students drown at Elegushi beach

Four secondary school graduates who just finished writing their senior secondary school exams have drowned at the Elegushi beach in Lagos while celebrating the completion of their secondary school education.

It was gathered that about 10 students between the ages 14-16 decided to storm the beach to celebrate finishing their final exams .

Findings show that they were students of Kuramo Senior College in the Lekki area of Lagos Island.

Chief Ayuba Elegushi, the spokesman for the beach revealed via a written statement  that the students weren’t properly registered as they got to the beach using a backdoor.

He further explained  that the incident happened at an unmanned section of the beach that is not open to the public.

His statement reads in part “We initially sent them away from the area of the beach they wanted to swim in. Then, they went to another place that was not for the public at all. It was the child of our kinsman, Abass, who took them from school to the beach and those kids followed him.

“They did not pay any gate fee to access the beach. Abass used the leverage that he was one of us to take them through another place.”

The victims were said to have raised the alarm as the water swept them away.

He said some life guards dived into the sea and brought out six of the pupils.

“Out of the six that were rescued, some escaped by the time we got there. We were able to arrest two of them and we took them to the Jakande Police Station.

“As of now, there are still four missing as our seamen have not been able to bring them out of the water. We have informed their parents and they have come to the police station.

“Abass is one of the missing kids. There is another boy we have not identified and two other girls,” he added.

The spokesperson said the two boys that were arrested told the police that they were chased from the beach before sneaking into the restricted section  through an unknown route to swim.

He said, “They wrote in their statements that they were chased from the first section they went to. Abass told them that they should not worry and he would take them to another part of the beach. He took them to another end of the beach where no one could see them.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said, “The teenagers were from Kuramo Senior College, Lekki. Four of them are missing. They are two males and two females. Efforts are on to recover their bodies. We have yet to meet with the parents of the victims.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Waterways Authority, Saheed Adesanya, said he would confirm the incident and get back to our correspondent.

The identities of the drowned students are yet to be identified  but effort are still in place to retrieve their bodies from the sea.

  • NECO replies MURIC on Eid-el-Kabir day examination

NECO replies MURIC on Eid-el-Kabir day examination

The National Examinations Council (NECO) says it has not scheduled any examination for July 9, contrary to insinuations in some quarters that it scheduled examination date on Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) day.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) had appealed to NECO to postpone any exams scheduled for Saturday, July 9, as it clashed with the first day of eid-el-Adha (Sallah).

However, in a swift reaction, the council in a statement by the Head Information and Public Relations Division, Mr Azeez Sani on Monda, doused the fears.

Sani said the council was conscious of the importance of religious festivals and had as such, always made adequate provision for such in fixing examination dates.

“The council has given a whole examination free week, beginning from July 8, to July 13, in the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for school-based candidates.

“This is to enable Muslim faithful to have enough time to celebrate the festival,” he said.

Recall that the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for School based Candidates began on June 27, and will end on Aug.12.

  • WAEC supervisors arrested over exam malpractice

The West African Examinations Council, (WAEC) has confirmed that 10 supervisors have been arrested across the country for aiding and supporting exam malpractices in its ongoing Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE)

This was  made known by Patrick Areghan, the head of Nigeria National Office of West Africa Examination Council (WAEC),  in Abuja yesterday.

Areghan hinted that the arrests were made in  Kano, Beyelsa and Kaduna  and Lagos states.

“Our major problem lies with the supervisors as only few of them are reliable and it’s unfortunate these are the supervisors that were nominated by the various states’ ministry of education, and we employed them. We don’t have the power to nominate any supervisors on our own we only made use of credible teachers supplied to us by the ministry,” he said.

He added, “But for a mere pot of porridge, they sell their conscience and allow candidates to come into the examination hall with phones to snap question papers and post them on designated platforms.”

He stressed further that some of the supervisors belonged to syndicate groups that run the platforms, saying that they will face the music.

“The good news is we catch them, and they don’t go unpunished as we are working hand in hand with the Nigerian police.”

He further appealed to WAEC supervisors to desist from activities that can soil their names and the examination body.

According to him, “in spite of these, we were not deterred rather we remained resilient and resolute in the conduct of our activities”.

  • Breaking: Buhari reduces UTME, NECO, SSCE forms cost

Breaking: Buhari reduces UTME, NECO, SSCE forms cost

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved reduction in the cost of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) form.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports President Buhari also approved reduction in the cost of National Examinations Council (NECO), Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and Basic Education Certificate Examination forms.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu made this known while briefing the federal executive council, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday.

He said the President directed the Ministry to look into the reduction following significant improvement in revenues being remitted to the treasury by the education agencies.

The exam agencies are not meant to be revenue generating bodies, they’re only supposed to cover costs/operating expenses.

The sharp increase in remittances by JAMB, from less than N60m in 2010–2016 to over N15 billion in 2017/18, has shown that the fees being charged could be reduced.

With effect from January 2019 the cost of JAMB UTME form will drop from N5,000 to N3,500, while NECO will drop from N11,350, to N9,850.
