Court sentences man to prison for stabbing wife 38 times

Mohammad Qoraishi, aged 27, of Hull, was jailed for a minimum of 16 years and 82 days on June 7, 2019, for murdering his teenage wife.

Maidstone Crown Court heard he stabbed 19-year-old Parwin Quriashi 38 times on Christmas Day in 2018 at her home on London Road, Maidstone.

Qoraishi and the victim were cousins and had an arranged marriage in August 2018. He moved into her home five days before the attack.

The prosecutor Alexandra Healy explained that there had been tensions leading up to and following the marriage.

It was heard that Qoraishi hit his wife over the head with a frying pan before launching a “frenzied” attack with a kitchen knife.

He stabbed her in the head, neck, chest, thighs and abdomen. One wound to her neck was 6cm in depth.

Ms Healy said: “Parwin was just 19-years-old and was the victim of a ferocious and sustained attack in her own kitchen.

“She had 38 stab wounds to her head, chest and thighs.

“She had also been strangled and had been hit to the back of her head with a frying pan.”

Ms Healy added that some of the knife wounds could have been inflicted after Parwin was already dead.

Following the attack, Qoraishi drove to the port in an attempt to flee, however, it was shut as it was Christmas Day.

Qoraishi was arrested at the wheel of his car wearing blood-stained clothes.

Parwin was discovered in the flat when neighbours became worried after hearing noises and a woman’s screams.

Qoraishi was questioned four times by police. He claimed Parwin’s father had threatened him.

During a hearing in May 2019, Qoraishi pleaded guilty when he was expected to enter a not guilty plea.

After private talks with his barrister, Qoraishi appeared at his hearing via prison video link and repeated: “Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty.”

Judge David Griffith-Jones QC told Qoraishi: “This was a senseless murder of your wife.

“Whilst I’m prepared to accept the murder was not premeditated but occurred in a fit of rage in which you snapped, it is clear that you knew what you were doing and your intention was to kill her.

“The inescapable fact is you performed these acts of utter barbarity and in the cold light of day you’ve had to face the enormity of what you’ve done.

“Given the extent and obvious ferocity of the attack and the injuries caused, there can be no doubt that your intention, whilst not premeditated… must have been to kill your wife.”

Defending Qoraishi was Bernard Tetlow QC who stated that the trigger for the attack was because of the arranged marriage.

He also explained that he was happy living in Hull and that Parwin’s father refused to let her move to Hull where her husband had a home and a job.

In a letter, Qoraishi said: “I am deeply ashamed about what I did and can only apologise from my heart and plead for forgiveness.”

Mohammad Qoraishi sat impassioned as he was jailed for life, to serve a minimum of 16 years and 82 days.

After the sentencing, senior investigating officer DCI Ivan Beasley said: “This was an unprovoked and savage attack on a defenceless young woman.

“Her tragic death at the hands of her husband has left a family mourning her loss.

“Qoraishi fled the scene and was tracked down by officers near Dover.

“It is only right that he will now spend a considerable time in prison for this brutal crime.”

A 32-year-old unemployed man, Saheed Balogun, who allegedly stabbed a woman with knife over water, was on Tuesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Balogun, who resides at Moshalasi, Alagbado, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge of breach of peace, assault and grievous harm.
The accused, according to Police Prosecutor Godwin Awase, committed the offences on Sept. 17 at his residence.
Awase said the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by stabbing his neighbour, Mrs Bisi Oladele, with knife.
“The accused assaulted the complainant and inflicted severe injuries on her body.”
Awase said the complainant got a tipoff from her neighbours that they saw the accused stealing water from her tank.
“The complainant, who discovered that the water in her tank had drastically reduced, approached the accused, warned him not to steal her water again.
“The accused entered his room, brought out a knife and entered the bathroom where the complainant was having her bath and stabbed her on her hand and chest for being rude.

  • Burnley fan stabbed before Europa League match in Athens

A Burnley fan was stabbed, and four others were injured, before the first leg of their Europa League play-off against Olympiakos in Greece.

The fan needed stitches to a leg wound and received medical attention at the stadium in Piraeus near Athens.

About 1,000 Burnley fans travelled to Greece for the game; 23 were arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

Burnley lost the game, the first leg of the Europa League play-off round, 3-1. The second leg takes place on Thursday.

A statement from the club said: “The vast majority [of our fans] were once again impeccably behaved, with the coaching operation to transport supporters to the ground put in place by the club again a great success, as it was in the previous round in Istanbul.

“However, five of our supporters were unfortunately injured – including a person who received a stab wound to the leg – and received medical attention at the stadium.

“Those injured all travelled independently to the stadium, outside the organised travel operation.”

The club said they were working closely with Olympiakos and local police to investigate the incidents.

Burnley, who went into the game unbeaten in their previous four qualifying games under manager Sean Dyche, have not been in European competition since 1966-67.

They beat Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir and Scottish Premiership runners-up Aberdeen in extra time to set up the tie with Olympiakos.

  • Beauty queen sentenced to death for stabbing lover 25 times

The 2016 Miss Lang’ata Women Prison’s beauty queen, Ruth Kamande, has been sentenced to death in Kenya on Thursday after she was found guilty of killing her boyfriend, Farid Mohammed.

A Kenyan High Court sentenced Kamande, 24. Justice Jessie Lesiit during the ruling at the Milimani law court said she had no other option but to send her to the hangman’s noose, as she deliberately stabbed her boyfriend, reports Kenya’s The Star.

Kamande had been imprisoned for killing Farid Mohammed, 24, in 2015.

The judge held that Kamande acted in malice adding that her actions proved the same.

The prison beauty queen had defended herself by telling the court that she had discovered that her boyfriend was undergoing HIV treatment and threatened her when she confronted him over the matter.

“I want young people to know that it is not cool to kill each other. If you have an issue with a boyfriend, just walk away and forgive,” said Lessit.

The judge said although the Supreme Court held that death sentence is not mandatory, Kamande did not deserve mercy.

She said she was not remorseful and that she stabbed her boyfriend 25 times.

Justice Lesiit, termed the killing as gender-based violence, adding that she was manipulative and controlling.

During the hearing of the case, Mohammed’s sister Serah Waithera, who was called as the third witness, described the couple’s relationship as stormy and one-sided.

Waithera said Kamande pushed her brother too far and that her expectations did not match his.

“She came to my workplace and introduced herself as my brother’s girlfriend,” she told the court.

“From then on she would complain to me when they had problems but my brother would deny their relationship. One time I advised her not to force the relationship.”

Man attacks refugees in shelter home, stabs nine

A man went on a stabbing spree Saturday night at an apartment complex in Boise, Idaho that is home to refugee families, sending nine people, including children, to the hospital, four with life-threatening injuries, police said.

A 30-year-old man, Timmy Kinner, was arrested nearby soon after the attacks, which occurred about 8:45 p.m. local time Saturday, the Boise Police Department said in a statement.

Kinner is not a refugee, police said. No motive was known, but police said that Kinner was a temporary resident at the apartment complex and had been asked to leave on Friday.

Kinner, from Los Angeles, was being held without bail on Sunday morning at the Ada County jail on 15 charges, including six of injury to a child and nine of aggravated battery, jail records showed.

Some of the victims were in apartments and others were in a parking lot, Boise Police Chief, Bill Bones, told reporters.

The statement did not say from what countries the refugees had come.

“This incident is not a representation of our community but a single evil individual who attacked people without provocation that we are aware of at this time,” Bones said in the statement.

Jail records did not indicate whether Kinner had legal representation.
