Man Utd denied penalty in draw at Stamford Bridge

Manchester United lost further ground on Premier League leaders Manchester City after they played out a drab goalless deadlock with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Ole Gunnar Solkjaer’s side remain second but are now 12 points adrift of City while the result left Chelsea outside the top four a point behind West Ham United.

Manchester United – who have lost only one of their last 20 league games – thought they were about to be offered the chance to make a breakthrough in the first half, but a penalty appeal for handball against Callum Hudson-Odoi was dismissed by referee Stuart Attwell after he was instructed to consult a pitchside monitor by the video assistant referee.

Chelsea, who remain unbeaten under new manager Thomas Tuchel, had chances but United keeper David de Gea made a fine second-half save from Hakim Ziyech while opposite number Edouard Mendy saved well from Scott McTominay and Fred was narrowly off target with a long-range effort. Mendy also punched away a late effort from Bruno Fernandes.

In the end, however, this was another game to add to the list of meetings between the so-called top six that ended in stalemate.

  • Ziyech becoming increasingly ‘worried’ at Stamford Bridge

Ziyech becoming increasingly ‘worried’ at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech is becoming increasingly unsettled at Stamford Bridge.

Corriere dello Sport says he is ‘worried’ about spending another season on the sidelines.

And the source states that Ziyech ‘feels left out’ of new boss Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

It is alleged he will request a meeting to discuss his future with managing director Marina Granovskaia.

Ziyech arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer in a £37million switch from Dutch giants Ajax.

The winger has been plagued with injuries and has struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

Despite his poor spell of form, two Italian giants have set their sights on signing him.

AC Milan and Juventus could reportedly battle it out for his signature in the summer.

  • Frank Lampard gets target to secure Chelsea job

Frank Lampard gets target to secure Chelsea job

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard faces losing his job at Stamford Bridge if he doesn’t get the team back into the top-four race.

The Blues are sitting in eighth after Tuesday’s defeat to Leicester, their fifth league defeat in eight games.

There remains a consensus amongst the Chelsea hierarchy that Lampard deserves a chance to get his side out of their current rut.

But the Daily Mail says that patience has an expiry date as the Blues want to secure the riches afforded to those who qualify for the Champions League.

Lampard is under no illusions about his future given the form of his team.

The Englishman is safe for now and a run of three home matches against Luton Town, Wolves andBurnley could help him turn things around.

  • I built Chelsea but difficult to stay – Willian

I built Chelsea but difficult to stay – Willian

Brazilian player Willian admits it’s very difficult to remain at Stamford Bridge while his current contract expires soon.

The midfielder has declared he now expects his contract to expire in June with talks over a new deal at deadlock.

“Really a very beautiful story that I built at this club, I have a very special affection for the fans, for the people who work there and I identified myself a lot here,” he told Brazilian publication Expediente Futebol.

“Everyone knows that my contract ends now in a few months, so the renewal is really a difficult thing to happen.

“I think it will be very difficult for me to renew because Chelsea offered me two years, I asked for three and it ended there, we didn’t talk anymore, we didn’t negotiate anymore.”

  • 10-man Arsenal fight back at Stamford Bridge

10-man Arsenal fight back at Stamford Bridge

Ten-man Arsenal came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Defender, David Luiz was sent-off for bundling over Tammy Abraham. The resultant penalty was converted by Jorginho.

The Chelsea forward had pounced on a terrible backpass by Shkodran Mustafi and rounded keeper Bernd Leno when he was shoved over by Brazil defender Luiz.

Chelsea were dominant for long periods but failed to kill the game off and were punished when N’Golo Kante slipped inside the centre circle allowing 18-year-old Martinelli to gallop free and produce an excellent finish, the Brazilian’s 10th league and cup goal of the season.

It was Arsenal’s first shot on target and came after a Chelsea corner which was cleared by Mustafi, the German atoning for his earlier error.

Chelsea thought they had won it when skipper Cesar Azpilicueta scored from six yards six minutes from time but spirited Arsenal earned a point through captain Hector Bellerin – making his first appearances since 5 December, BBC reports.

  • Bournemouth stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Dan Gosling’s late goal gave Bournemouth their first win since early November in a scrappy encounter at Chelsea.

The match looked to be heading for a goalless draw when Gosling flicked the ball over his and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s head, the goal originally ruled out for offside.

But the video assistant referee (VAR) awarded the goal, ending Bournemouth’s five-match losing streak and earning them their third away win of the season.

Bournemouth have now beaten Chelsea three times in their five Premier League visits to Stamford Bridge.

Their last Premier League points had come on 2 November, when they beat Manchester United at home.

Frank Lampard’s side had lost three of their previous four top-flight games and lacked tempo and creativity as they welcomed Bournemouth, who move up to 14th in the table.

Mason Mount and Emerson had the best chances to score for the hosts, but they were undone by a resolute Bournemouth defence, who thwarted their opponents’ every move.

  • West Ham end seven-game winless run at Stamford Bridge

West Ham relieved the pressure on boss Manuel Pellegrini as they ended their seven-game winless run with a first victory at Chelsea for 17 years.

Aaron Cresswell scored the winner three minutes after the break as he cut inside and fired low past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Chelsea had plenty of chances early on as Christian Pulisic missed the target from a few yards out. The American also wasted a great opportunity late on.

But Pellegrini was rewarded for picking 33-year-old David Martin in goal instead of Roberto as his side held firm under late pressure.

It proved an inspired choice as Martin, whose father Alvin is a West Ham legend, made several good saves to keep a clean sheet on his Hammers and Premier League debut.

The visitors also thought they had gone 2-0 up after 71 minutes, but Michail Antonio’s goal was ruled out for handball.

Victory lifted West Ham six points clear of the relegation zone while Chelsea failed to close the three-point gap to second-placed Manchester City and Leicester City in third.

However, the day belonged to Martin, who sank to his knees and was close to tears at the end of the game before celebrating in the stands with his father, who played in the West Ham defence for 20 years.

Frank Lampard’s decision to rotate his line-up following midweek exertions in Valencia backfired.

The majority of the back four and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga remained the same, but with Emerson coming in for Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back, alongside Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma and Reece James.

Mason Mount came in for N’Golo Kante to play with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in a midfield three with a more attacking look, while further forward Olivier Giroud replaced Tammy Abraham after the latter picked up a hip injury in Spain.

Pedro came in for Willian as one of the two wide players, Christian Pulisic keeping his place on the other wing.
