Ex-Plateau Gov, Dariye speaks first time after state pardon

Former Plateau Governor, Joshua Dariye, who was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment over corruption charges in 2018, has thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for granting him state pardon.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Dariye was granted state pardon by the Council of State led by President Buhari in April 2022 and was eventually released from Kuje Correctional Centre in August, four months after he was granted pardon.

Dariye, who arrived in Jos on Wednesday, said “I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for being magnanimous and granting us state pardon. I also thank Plateau people for their prayers and solidarity during my travail. If not for your prayers and support, this day would not have been possible”.

The former lawmaker expressed happiness and thanked God for uniting him with his people. He assured the people that he, alongside his supporters, would consolidate on whatever gain they had made over the years and unite the people toward building a greater Plateau.

The former governor urged Plateau residents to obtain their permanent voters cards so as to elect credible leaders in 2023.

  • Why FG can’t consider request for state pardon for Nnamdi Kanu – Malami

Why FG can’t consider request for state pardon for Nnamdi Kanu – Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami has revealed why the Federal Government may not consider the mounting request from the South East leaders to grant state pardon to the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

“Pardon is a function of conviction in the Nigerian context and as far as I know, Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted yet so the idea of pardoning him is premature,” the AGF said on Wednesday on a monitored Channels Television programme.

Buttressing his point, the minister stated that the trials associated with Kanu have not been concluded and as such the pardon option cannot get on the table just yet.

While stressing that he is not ruling the option out, Malami, however, noted that pardoning Kanu is not on the table at the moment.

Reacting to a question regarding the IPOB leader’s pardon being an option for peace in the South East, the AGF said he is yet to assess the security implications of such a decision.

Nonetheless, the Minister of Justice declared that the best interest of the public would be a major consideration if the opportunity avails itself for a pardon to be given to the IPOB leader.

Malami’s comments come a few days after leaders from the South East met with President Muhammadu Buhari to plead for Kanu to be pardoned.

While addressing the leaders, who visited him under the aegis of Highly Respected Igbo Greats, Buhari said the plea for Kanu’s release is an extremely difficult demand on him as leader of this country.

The president said, “the implication” is very serious. An unconditional release of Kanu, who is standing trial, according to the President, runs contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.
Stressing his policy of non-interference with the Judiciary, he said when Kanu jumped bail, got arrested, and was brought back to the country.

“I said the best thing was to subject him to the system,” Buhari added.

President Buhari further stated that Kanu should go make his case in court instead of giving very negative impressions of the country from outside.

Ken Saro-Wiwa foundation rejects Buhari’s proposed pardon for late activist, eight others

The Board of Directors of Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation (KSWF) has rejected the proposal by President Muhammadu Buhari to grant pardon to Saro-Wiwa and eight Ogoni activists executed by the late Military Dictator, Sani Abacha, in 1995.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the president made the proposition on Friday when he received some leaders and people of Ogoni Land at the State House, Abuja.

“The unfortunate incidents of the early 1990s leading to the loss of lives of distinguished sons of Ogoni Land and the collateral judicial processes are indelible in our memories.

“Despite the grievous circumstances, the Federal Government will consider the request for the grant of pardon to finally close the Ogoni saga,’’ Buhari said on Friday.

How in a swift reaction via a statement signed for the board of directors by Dr. Owen Wiwa, the foundation asked the President to grant the earlier request for the exoneration of Saro-Wiwa and eight others made by the family of the late activist.

The statement said: “Ken Saro-Wiwa and the other Eight Ogonis were not criminals. They were innocent activists unjustly murdered for fighting for a just cause on behalf of their oppressed community.

“The path to true peace in the region begins with justice. The cleaning up of the environment for which they campaigned and died for is a first good step.

“The exoneration of Ken Saro-Wiwa and 8 other Ogoni activists, judicially murdered on November 10 1995 is another step towards peace.

“The family of Ken Saro-Wiwa have made a request for the exoneration of Ken Saro-Wiwa to the President in the past and are still waiting for a response. We urge the President to again consider this request as a path to justice and peace.

“The family and the Foundation have not asked any individual to ask for pardon or clemency for Ken Saro-Wiwa on our behalf, nor are we aware of any group of Ogonis making such a request”.

Buhari receives Ogoni leaders in Abuja, considers state pardon for Ken Saro-wiwa, others

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Ogoni leaders to sensitise indigenes on the value of protecting national assets like pipelines and other oil installations, saying willful damages usually create more havoc on their environment and hamper development in the area.

According to a statement by the Special Media Aide to the President, Femi Adesina, Buhari made the call on Friday when he received some leaders and people of Ogoni Land at the State House, Abuja.

The President noted that the Federal Government was committed to the cleaning up of Ogoniland so that indigenes can regain their lives, return to farms and reactivate economic activities.

“You will need to educate the people of Ogoniland and the region more that when pipelines are broken, the damage is more to the immediate environment and the people. The majority farmers and fishermen struggle because the fishes now move to the deep sea,’’ he said.

The President said bad industry practices coupled with security challenges had resulted in massive spills with attendant environmental degradation of Ogoni, leading to agitations and strife.

He said the government would bring to a close all pending issues on sons of Ogoniland.

“Your Royal Highnesses, distinguished representatives of the people of Ogoni Land, I note the need to ensure completion of segment of the East-West road traversing Ogoni Land, and steps will be taken to ensure delivery under the Infrastructure Development Fund as earlier conceived. We intend to complete this vital artery of Nigeria.

“Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring clemency and national integration as part of this Administration’s bid to lay the foundation for genuine reconciliation and bring closure to the issues of Ogoniland.

“The unfortunate incidents of the early 1990s leading to the loss of lives of distinguished sons of Ogoni Land and the collateral judicial processes are indelible in our memories.

“Despite the grievous circumstances, the Federal Government will consider the request for the grant of pardon to finally close the Ogoni saga,’’ President Buhari noted.

According to the President, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Ltd (NPDC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), had been granted license to operate OML11, which will stimulate economic activities and integration in the zone.

“To ensure the stimulation of economic activities in Ogoni Land as underpinned by the vast petroleum resources underlying Ogoni Land and neighbouring communities, NPDC, a subsidiary of the NNPC has been granted license to operate OML11.

“Accordingly, NNPC is hereby directed to engage all host communities, particularly Ogoni people to ensure inclusive processes of oil and gas exploration and production is anchored on optimum involvement of host communities. NPDC will lay a broad-based programme for the emergence of a new Ogoni Land for the benefit of the Ogoni people and Nigeria as a whole,’’ he added.

President Buhari said he was aware of the passage of the Bill on the Federal University of Environmental Technology by the National Assembly and awaits transmission for further necessary action.

“This Administration has placed the rehabilitation of the Niger-Delta as a top priority and has committed a lot of resources to tackle existing problems, including launching a One-Billion-dollar oil clean-up exercise to reverse the terrible damage and restore the ecosystem.

“I am pleased that the restoration and amelioration activities under the auspices of the United Nations and the vehicle of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, has commenced work since we assumed office as we promised.

“We will take further steps to ensure faithful and speedy execution of the project so as to restore the environment and enable farming and fishing activities to resume in the affected areas,’’ he added.

The President also appreciated the leaders for recognition of the Federal Government’s efforts to clean up the area and stimulate more economic activities.

“Your Royal Highnesses and very distinguished people of Ogoni Land, I thank you very much for your kind words and recognition of efforts made by our administration to bring progress to your part and all parts of the country.’’

In his remarks, the President of the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, His Majesty King Godwin N.K. Giniwa, thanked President Buhari for various interventions in the area, particularly on clean-up of the environment.

The paramount ruler noted that the people believe in the unity of Nigeria and the future of every group could only be guaranteed in one nation.

He congratulated the President for achievements in critical infrastructure in the country, especially in railways and road constructions, urging more efforts in provision of potable water.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has granted State pardon to Mrs Funke Akindele-Bello and her husband, Mr Abdulrasheed Bello, who are both non-custodial convicts for offences related to the disobedience of COVID-19 lockdown regulations.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports a statement signed by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, said Sanwo-Olu acted based on the recommendations of the state advisory council on the prerogative of mercy.

Recall that Akindele and her hubby, better known as JJC Skillz, were on April 6 arrested and arraigned before a magistrate court for hosting a party at their Lekki home on April 4. The party was to mark the birthday of JJC Skillz.

The Lagos Magistrate Court in Ogba sentenced the sensational actress and her husband for breaching COVID-19 lockdown order. They were sentenced to three weeks of community service and directed to pay a fine of N100,000 each.

The sentence was given by Chief Magistrate Yewande Aje-Afunwa at the Ogba Magistrate Court on Monday, April 6, 2020, after the celebrity couple were found guilty of hosting the house party during the government-ordered lockdown.

According to the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the prerogative of mercy was under the powers conferred on the Governor by Section 212 (1) & (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

Sanwo-Olu also approved the release of 56 inmates from various correctional centres in the State. The 56 released inmates were recommended by the Advisory Council after due examination of their case files and consideration of the length of time served, the gravity of the offence, old age and ill-health among other parameters.

The Attorney General enjoined the beneficiaries to be good citizens and stay away from crime.

The eight-member Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, headed by Dr Abayomi Finnih was inaugurated Governor Sanwo-Olu in December 2019.
