Housemaid jailed 4 years for stealing employer’s money

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a house help, Comfort Jacob to four years imprisonment for stealing her employer’s money to the tune of N500,000 and 12,000 USD.

Justice Rahman Oshodi also sentenced Comfort’s husband,  Isaac, to one year jail term for conspiring with his wife to steal from her employer.

Oshodi sentenced the couple to four years and one year respectively, following their plea bargain agreement to the amended two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

Oshodi said the offence Comfort committed represented a profound breach of trust.

According to him, Comfort was employed as a house help, a position that requires the utmost integrity and honesty.

He said: “Instead, you exploited your privileged access to your employer’s home to steal substantial sums of money.

“Such offences are regrettably prevalent in our society, where domestic workers abuse the confidence reposed in them by their employers.

“The impact of your actions extends beyond the financial loss and you have violated the sacred trust between employer and employee, potentially making other honest job seekers suffer suspicion and scrutiny due to your offence.

“Your actions undermine the very foundation of domestic employment relationships.”

The judge thereafter sentenced her to one year imprisonment on the count of conspiracy and three years on the charge of stealing.

Oshodi, however, said the sentencing should run concurrently and the sentencing should begin from April 13, 2022, the day of her remand.

The court further order that all items recovered from the convicts during the investigation be applied as restitution to the complainant, Mrs Omolara Dakore.

The convict’s were initially arraigned on a six-count information comprising conspiracy, breaking and entering a dwelling house, and stealing. upon their arraignment on May 10 2023.

They had pleaded not guilty and the Police Counsel, Mr Joseph Eboseremen had called an Investigation Police Officer (IPO), ASP Patrick Anthony, who testified as a prosecution witness one.

The prosecution, bearing the burden of proof under section 135(1) of the Evidence Act 2011, called one witness and tendered three documentary exhibits.

These included the convict’s confessional statements, which were admitted as Exhibits B and C following a trial-within-trial conducted to determine their admissibility.

The witness had testified that in the petition, the complainant submitted that she employed Comfort as a house help on Feb. 9, 2022.

“On February 11, 2022, when the complainant returned from church, she discovered that the house help was nowhere to be found and that a room she had locked before going to church was found open.

“The complainant subsequently discovered that over N500,000 and $12,000 contained in a white envelope were missing from the said room.

“One of the keys to the premises was also removed, and all efforts to locate Comfort were unsuccessful.

“Comfort’s number was given to the tracking section, and both the husband and wife were eventually arrested on April 12, 2022 at Benin City and they were brought back to Lagos for further investigation.”

According to the prosecution, the offences violate Sections 287(7) and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

#ENDSARS: Police nab 11-year-old boy for stealing sergeant’s uniform

An 11-year-old boy is undergoing interrogation by the police after he joined some hoodlums in attacking a police station in Edo State.

The boy collected a sergeant’s uniform during the attack.

Edo police spokesperson Chidi Nwabuzor said the boy was among hoodlums who broke into a warehouse to loot and was wearing the police uniform at the time he was arrested, BBC Pidgin reports.

It was gathered that the boy joined hoodlums in attacking Oba Market Police Station and named himself Inspector General of Police afterwards.

“We caught him wearing a sergeant’s police uniform, that’s all I know,” Mr Nwabuzor said.

The spokesperson said the police did not parade the boy because of his age, although a photo of him wearing the police uniform and sitting on the floor has gone viral.

Nwabuzor said the police would hand over the boy to the correctional juvenile centre as normal procedure for a minor.

Several police stations, warehouses, businesses and prisons were attacked during the crisis.

  • Oyedepo sacks top church officials for stealing God’s money

The Presiding Bishop of Winner’s Chapel, David Oyedepo, has dismissed some officials for allegedly stealing from the church’s treasury.

Oyedepo, who spoke on Saturday during an empowerment summit organised for the church’s ordained workers, however, did not disclose the number of officials affected.

The annual event, which is usually attended by pastors, zonal ministers and their assistants, deacons, ushers and other ordained workers of the church, where they are acquainted with the church’s programme for the year, was presided over by Oyedepo, while his deputy, Bishop David Abioye, was also in attendance. Both men ministered powerfully. Oyedepo ministered on service, while Abioye spoke on consistency in service.

In the course of the programme, however, Oyedepo took some time to talk about the goings on in the church. He revealed how some very high up officials, mainly accountants, had looted the church’s treasury.

He said, “We had no choice but to dismiss them. You can imagine top church officials engaging in doubling figures and other dubious practices. After we dismissed them, we discovered more fraud.”

“Those who should discover the fraud were the ones involved in it. One of them refused to confess until the last minute. Can you imagine accountants perpetrating fraud in the house of God?

“Don’t employ them, don’t sympathise. Whoever sympathises with the wicked is wicked himself. Don’t sympathise with any perpetrator of fraud, otherwise, you are a partaker of the evil act.”

  • Police arraign Okorocha’s former commissioner for fraud, stealing

Police arraign Okorocha’s former commissioner for fraud, stealing

The Imo State Police Command on Monday arraigned a former Commissioner of Commerce and Industry to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Best Mbanaso, in a magistrate’s court.

The 11 counts bordered on fraud, stealing and destruction of fuel stations in the state.

Mbanaso was also an ex-Special Adviser on Mayoral Affairs (Orlu zone) to Okorocha before he fell out with the governor based on who should become the next governor of the state.

Mbanaso was reportedly arrested last Wednesday.

He pleaded not guilty to the 11 counts.

He was alleged to have, between 2012 and 2013, with intent to defraud, received fuel station materials valued at over N38m from Olison Enterprises, belonging to Chief Oliver Anopuome, acting on behalf of the Imo State Government.

He was also alleged to have received 33,000 litres of diesel, valued at over N5m, belonging to Olison Enterprises.

The police prosecutor, Caleb Achi, equally accused the ex-commissioner of maliciously destroying a fuel station belonging to one Oliver under the false pretences of acting for the state government.

The charges read in part, “That you, Best Mbanaso, conspired with others now at large to steal underground fuel tanks and a GP water tank belonging to Olison Enterprises….”

The magistrate, Adaugo Nosiri, complained over the manner the charges were prepared.

She also flayed the police for arraigning the accused on charges the magistrate’s court lacked jurisdiction over.

The defence counsel, Fintan Ilika, orally sought for bail for his client on liberal terms.

According to the defence lawyer, the charges were “politically orchestrated.”

The magistrate granted bail to the accused on all the charges she had jurisdiction over with one surety who must be a civil servant from grade level 10.

While adjourning the matter to September 10, she directed that the files be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
