Stella Damasus reveals reason Hollywood don’t give Nigerians movie roles

Veteran Nollywood actress Stella Damasus has expressed her views on why Nigerians struggle to secure roles in Hollywood.

She believes that Nigerian actors do not conform to Hollywood’s stereotypical image of Africans, which poses a significant barrier for them.

Damasus stated that Hollywood often portrays Africans as having East African accents and as being similarly dark-skinned to Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o.

This perception, she argues, makes it challenging for Nigerian actors to fit into Hollywood roles. She also noted that many Nigerian actors who succeed in landing lead roles in Hollywood were raised outside of Nigeria.

In a conversation with Arrow House, Damasus explained, “Hollywood filmmakers insist that there is a particular accent that Africans who want to act in their industry must have. So, that’s why they forced our people to put it on.

“I’m like, we [Nigerians] don’t sound like that, maybe one or two small countries in East Africa. I’m Nigerian, they are Ghanaians. We are different people and we all sound different. We [Nigerians] don’t sound like this. That’s what Hollywood wants. That’s what they are used to.

“Most of the Nigerians who have done big screen movies in Hollywood are people who were raised in England. Most of them have a different type of accent. And they [Hollywood filmmakers] said to me, ‘We want an African to be very dark.

“That’s the kind of African that we are used to. We are not used to your kind of African. We want Lupita dark. You are not dark enough and you are not white enough to be half-caste, so it would be hard to place you. You are not mixed race. Then your accent, you don’t sound American or British, neither do you sound African.

“And I’m like, ‘How do you think Africans sound? Because Africa is full of a million and one countries. And inside those countries, we have different dialects and different accents.

How I earned N10,000 for my first movie role-Stella Damasus

Veteran actress, Stella Damasus has recounted how she earned N10,000 for her first movie role in Nollywood.

Damasus made this known during an interview with media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu,

“My first movie was ’95 into ’96, that’s the film ‘Abused’. I had no idea what I was doing but I went for it. I got it by accident. I didn’t plan to be an actor. I thought I was going to be a singer because I worked in a studio,” she said.

“A friend came to my house and said they were going for an audition. I lived in Surulere and she was going to Ikeja. I went with her. I saw tons of people standing outside under the sun. She went in and came out.

“Someone called me and asked if I had auditioned. I said I haven’t and didn’t come there for that. They said they liked my look and how I sound. They asked that I come read for the movie. They gave me a script. I read and left.

“Three weeks later, they called to inform me I got the part. My pay was N10,000. My studio salary then was N700.”

Asked why she left Nigeria at the peak of her career, she said: “I’ve been in the US (myself, my husband, and my kids) since 2013. One of my children had to study a course not offered in Nigeria. Another was for health reasons,” the actress said.

“My husband had to take a project at an American university. Having considered these, we decided to move.

“Before I made for the US, I didn’t act for about two, three years. I had this routine of taking breaks to examine my strides and the impact of my work. I had a rethink about the prospect of my career outside entertainment.

“If I hit my 40s, what will I do? Wait for scripts or create my own thing? Leaving my country, who’ll know me? I decided I’ll build my brand globally. That’s what I hope to do and it’s a gradual process.”

Stop calling me Damascus, Stella Damasus warns fans

Popular actress, Stella Damasus has warned the public against calling her Damascus.

Damascus, which is the capital of Syria, is a popular name among Christians due to biblical stories about the city.

In a post via her social media handles on Sunday, the actress said people have been spelling her name in the wrong manner. She urged the public to always use the right spelling when addressing her.

“My name is Stella Damasus, not Damascus,” she wrote in a terse Twitter post.

In July, she came under backlash for allegedly promoting a video of a wife beating her cheating husband.

Some detractors had tackled her for allegedly supporting domestic violence against men.

But the film star debunked the claim, explaining that her support for the movie was based on its difference from the usual narrative that women are always the victim of various forms of assaults.

“Posting that video was not to promote any form of domestic violence. I have been in the movie industry for about 27 years now and for long, our movies from Nigeria and Africa always portray the women as the victim,” she had said.

  • I was molested by someone related to me-Stella Damasus

I was molested by someone related to me-Stella Damasus

Veteran actress and singer, Stella Damasus has recounted how she was molested at the age of eight.

The ‘Widow’ star narrated her experience in an Instagram Live session with gospel rapper, Bouqui which was monitored by TheNewsGuru.

She said: “I hate it when people come and say this thing happened to you, why are you just talking about it now. Bouqui, it has happened to me, I don’t say this anywhere, I have never said this before, it has happened to me, it wasn’t rape, it was molestation, by someone who was supposed to be related to me.

“I was eight years old, I couldn’t talk about it for years because it traumatised me, nobody knew, I was dealing with it myself, why couldn’t I talk, I knew what happened to others who had spoken up about it, they were disgraced, if you see the shame, even in school, once the word got out, it was about her being a prostitute even as young as we were, they would call you names, so man as seen you? Man has touched you? It’s not about what you’re going through, at the end of the day you spend years dealing with your trauma and we are not in a society that believes in “oh! go and see a therapist to talk about it for counseling,” said Damasus.

The role interpreter continued saying, “You get raped, you get beaten, you get molested, at the end of the day what did you wear? Why did you go to his house? Why did you entice him? Why were you flirting with him? It is never guys why would you touch a little girl, why would you put her on your lap? and start touching her, even the one that happened with this Ijesha guy, the fact that people will come up and say ‘let us see the video as proof’ Are you mad? This is the rut in the society that I am talking about, you want to spread the video of a girl being touched, I don’t care if he was touching even only her cheek I do not care, he has no right to violate someone else’s child, you cannot shame someone who has already gone through a traumatic experience and was even afraid to talk about that experience.”

Speaking further, Damasus said she was able to overcome it with the help of a therapist she met in the United Kingdom when she attended a conference, she said: “I had to start all over, start life again even though I was much older, I had to accept the real me.

Then, I had the opportunity of going to the UK, we were at a conference and I was speaking at the conference, I didn’t realize I said something that made people so emotional, I was just talking from my heart and you know when you are talking from your heart, you will just start to say stuff and before you know it you will say something people will say ‘oh I didn’t know that and as soon as we finished the guy held my hand, I will never forget, he is Ghanaian but lives in the UK, he said Stella I want to talk to you, so I sat with him and he said this is what I think you’re facing and you haven’t dealt with it, you are affecting and impacting people but there is something in you that you have to deal with totally, I said how did you know, and he said it’s not so hard to know. I listened to you and when you listen, you understand you don’t just hear, that’s what a lot of people miss out on, you have to speak to someone who will listen and not just hear and then he spoke to me and I responded to his questions and he said to me this is what you need to do.

And I started taking steps, that was when I learned about words of affirmation, that was when I learned to love myself unconditionally, I started loving people, I forgave the guy. I had to forgive him because I held on to that thing for so long it was killing me, but I had to forgive him and say God if you can take this away from me and make me whole again I will let him go and forgive him but you handle him. He is not doing very well by the way, but anyway, that is by the way”, she said.
