EPL: Newcastle’s new Saudi owners sack Steve Bruce

Premier League club Newcastle has parted ways with manager Steve Bruce on Tuesday as its Saudi ownership began reshaping the team two weeks after buying the club.

The 60-year-old took charge of his 1,000th match as a manager in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat by Tottenham – his only game as Magpies boss under the new owners.

Bruce said there had been “highs and lows” and that he hoped the new owners could “take the club forward”.

Graeme Jones will take interim charge of the Premier League side.

The Tyneside club have made a winless start to the Premier League season and sit second from bottom after three draws from their opening eight games.

Bruce was appointed Magpies manager in July 2019 and achieved finishes of 13th and 12th in his two full seasons in charge.

“I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club,” said Bruce.

“I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work.

“There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

“This is a club with incredible support and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond.”

A Newcastle statement said the club “would like to place on record its gratitude to Steve for his contribution and wishes him well for the future”.

Martinez emerges as Newcastle target to replace Steve Bruce

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez is emerging as a target for Newcastle United’s new owners.

Martinez’s contract is due to expire this summer and The Times says the Catalan is on the shortlist of Newcastle’s board.

The former Everton manager could be installed at Newcastle before preseason training, though it would mean him sacrificing the Qatar World Cup later in the year.

Martinez would find his former Wigan Athletic assistant manager Graeme Jones at Newcastle, who is expected to stay even if Steve Bruce is dismissed.

It’s emerged Bruce will be due £8m in compensation should he be sacked this month.

Newcastle will have to sack me – Steve Bruce

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce insists he’ll never quit.

The Magpies have won two matches from 19 in all competitions ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to fellow strugglers Brighton.

When asked about his future, the head coach said: “That decision will always be taken out of my hands.

“I only want what’s best for the club and over the last few months, in particular, I haven’t been good enough to get the results that this club demands.

“I understand it totally, the way it is. I will do my utmost to make sure that the club stays in the Premier League. For all the other stuff, I can’t influence that.

“But I’ll never walk away from it, I’ll never walk away from the challenge, that’s for sure.”

Newcastle still short of players after COVID-19 outbreak – Bruce

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce said on Friday that they are still without some of the players who tested positive for COVID-19, but he was relieved to have “two or three” back in the match day squad.

Newcastle’s training ground was closed last week after several members of the squad and staff tested positive for the novel coronavirus, forcing the league to postpone their match against Aston Villa.

However, Newcastle resumed full training this week and Bruce said they were in a better situation going into Saturday’s match against West Bromwich Albion.

“People have been tested twice and come back negative. We’ve got enough to hopefully win us the match,” Bruce told reporters while praising the club’s medical staff.

“We hope we’ve curtailed it, certainly looks that way. We still have some individuals self-isolating… We have two or three players that have come back into the squad who have had it and tested negative.

“It was a significant number of people in a tight-knit group (who tested positive). We will be without a chunk of players tomorrow, but as of Monday we will have a few coming back that will help us.”

Bruce did not name the individuals who tested positive out of respect for their privacy.

Although the training ground was closed, Bruce said the players were given instructions to train on their own.

“They’ve had their own individual programmes similar to when we went into lockdown. The fitness coach has been able to monitor them,” Bruce added.

“We were back to full training on Wednesday and all of them bounced in having not played or trained. They enjoyed being back.”

  • EPL: Newcastle appoint Steve Bruce as head coach

Newcastle United have appointed Steve Bruce as their head coach on a three-year contract.

Former Sunderland manager Bruce, 58, resigned as Sheffield Wednesday boss on Monday following talks with the Magpies at the weekend.
Newcastle have been without a manager since Rafael Benitez left when his contract expired in June, saying the club “did not share his vision”.
Bruce was born near Newcastle and was a boyhood Magpies fan.
“There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it’s one that my staff and I are ready for,” said Bruce. “This is my boyhood club and it was my dad’s club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family.”
Bruce will be joined by coaches Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, who have been part of his team at a number of his previous clubs.

Aston Villa sack manager Steve Bruce

English Championship side Aston Villa has officially confirmed the Sack of Coach Steve Bruce.
The club made this known in a statement released on its Twitter handle on Wednesday by its Chief Executive, Christian Purslow.
The club explained that Villa decided to sack the 57-year-old because of the club’s poor start to the new season.
The Villans have won only once in their last 10 matches under Bruce, with fans demanding for his sack.
Aston Villa assistants Colin Calderwood, Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh will also leave the club, with Villa Under-23s manager Kevin MacDonald taking charge of the trip to Millwall on Saturday.
“We would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment. We wish them well for the future.
“The process of recruiting a new manager has begun. In the meantime, Kevin MacDonald, Aston Villa U23s manager, will be in charge of the team for our trip to Millwall on Saturday,” the club said.
Villa currently sits 12th in the Championship table after picking just 11points from 15 matches.
