ALARMING! JAMB panel unearths 4,251 fingerprint alterations, 190 AI in 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Special Committee on Examination Infractions (SCEIi) has presented its report to the examination body, revealing how technology-driven malpractice is undermining Nigeria’s admission process.

Presenting the report in Abuja to the Registrar of the Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, Chairman of the Committee, Jake Epelle, said the team uncovered 4,251 cases of “finger blending” and 192 instances of AI-assisted impersonation through image morphing during its investigations into the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Beyond finger blending and Artificial Intelligence impersonation, the committee stated that it documented 1,878 false disability claims, forged credentials, multiple national identification number (nin) registrations, and collusion between candidates and examination syndicates.

The panel, inaugurated on August 18, was charged with the responsibility of probing rising infractions, reviewing JAMB’s systems, and recommending reforms.

Epelle lamented that malpractice has become highly organised, technology-driven, and dangerously normalised.

He said that parents, tutorial centres, schools, and even some CBT operators were complicit in the fraud, while weak legal frameworks made enforcement difficult.

The committee called on JAMB to adopt a multi-pronged response that includes deploying AI-powered biometric anomaly tools, real-time monitoring, and a central Examination Security Operations Centre.

JAMB asks UTME candidates to re-upload 2025 WAEC results for admission

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed all candidates who uploaded their O’level results before the release of the final 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results to return to accredited centres and re-upload the official results.

The directive was contained in the Board’s weekly bulletin issued on Monday, where it explained that all previously uploaded records had been cleared from its system to prevent discrepancies and ensure only the final WAEC results are used for admission processing.

JAMB noted, “Some candidates who sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, with ‘awaiting results’ had prematurely uploaded incomplete WAEC records before the final release.”

To address the situation, the Board added:

“To address the issue, JAMB has mandated a fresh upload for every candidate, irrespective of whether the new results differ from those uploaded earlier.

“All UTME candidates are advised to urgently re-upload their 2025 SSCE results on the JAMB portal to remain eligible for admission consideration.”

US govt revokes over 6,000 students visa

The US State Department has revoked more than 6,000 student visas.

The department said the revocations were due to overstays and law violations, with the vast majority being assault, driving under the influence, burglary, and support for terrorism.

In May, President Donald Trump’s administration temporarily halted new interview appointments for people applying for visas to study in the United States.

Interviews later resumed, but restrictions on accepting foreign students have been tightened, and scrutiny of visa applicants’ social media posts has increased.

In addition, the US State Department disclosed on Saturday that it would suspend the issuance of all visitor visas for individuals from the Palestinian territory of Gaza.

It said the measure would be in effect until it conducted “a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days.”

He stated that the results of 6,458 candidates remain under investigation for alleged involvement in high-tech cheating.

Oloyede urged the committee to submit a report not later than three weeks from the day of its inauguration.

Members of the committee include Prof. Muhammad Bello, Prof. Samuel Odewummi, Prof. Chinedum Nwajiuba, Prof. Ibe Ifeakandu and Prof. Tanko Ishaya.

Finally, WAEC resolves glitch issue, asks students to check portal

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that it discovered technical bugs in the just released 2025 examination results.

In a statement by its Public Affairs Department on Thursday, the examination body disclosed that following public outcry, it reviewed the Mathematics, English Language, Economics and Biology results released on its site.

While apologizing, the council said it urgently corrected the technical glitches that led to the situation.

It has now urged candidates who had previously checked their results to re-check after 24 hours from now.

“WAEC sincerely regrets to inform the general public of technical issues discovered during the internal review of the recently released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, (SC) 2025.

“As part of our efforts to curb examination malpractice, the Council embarked on an innovation (paper serialization) already deployed by a national examination body.

“It is also worth noting that this is in line with best practices in assessment. The paper serialization was carried out in Mathematics, English Language, Biology and Economics. However, an internal post result release procedure revealed some technical bugs in the results.

“The Council, being a responsive body that is sensitive to fairness and professionalism, has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches that led to the situation, as a result, access to the WASSCE (SC) 2025 results has been temporarily denied on the result checker portal.

“We extend our deep and sincere apologies to all affected candidates and the general public.

“We appreciate their patience and understanding as we work diligently to resolve this matter with transparency and urgency within the next twenty-four (24) hours,“ the statement read.

WAEC expressed commitment to upholding excellence, fairness, and transparency in all our assessment processes.

The examination body thanked candidates and their guardians for always counting on its integrity and reposing confidence in them to render quality service to the Nigerian child.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has given reason why its result checker portal has been temporarily shut down due to technical issues.

In a public notice shared on its official X handle on Wednesday, the council stated, “WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues.”

The council is “working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours.”

The temporary shutdown has left many students unable to view their results, which were officially released on Monday, August 4, 2025.

WAEC appealed for patience from candidates and advised them to monitor its official social media pages for updates.

The council also warned against using unofficial websites or individuals who promise alternative access to the results.

  • Police probe LASU female student’s arrest incident

Police probe LASU female student’s arrest incident

The Zone 2 Police Command has responded to a viral video showing armed officers manhandling a female student of Lagos State University (LASU).

The video, shared by a Facebook user named Obi Franklin, showed the student being dragged and bundled into a vehicle by armed officers.

In a statement on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Umma Ayuba, said the zone had noted the officers’ conduct during the student’s apprehension.

Ayuba said the arrest followed a petition against the student and others, over alleged assault and threats to the complainant’s life.

According to the petition, a group of armed men, suspected to be cultists, invaded the complainant’s home on July 13 and 14.

Ayuba explained that they allegedly issued threats to the complainant and his family, forcing him to relocate for their safety.

Ayuba said the student was invited for questioning and was later released after giving a statement.

“She was released to the LASU Student Union Government Welfare Director,” the spokesperson stated.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, has directed that the case be moved to the Lagos State Police Commissioner.

She said the officers involved in the incident had been identified and would face appropriate disciplinary measures.

Ayuba assured the public that justice would be served in a transparent manner.

Earlier, Franklin claimed the student had accused her landlord of sexual harassment and receiving death threats.

  • Police arrest officer who shot dead student in Ibadan

Police arrest officer who shot dead student in Ibadan

The Police Command in Oyo State says it has arrested one of its personnel who accidentally shot dead a 14-year-old secondary school student, Kehinde Alade, in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday.

He said the officer responsible for the discharge of the firearm had been taken into custody along with other members of his team.

Osifeso said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Johnson Adenola, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The investigation will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),” he said.

According to him, the officer is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

He assured the public that the process would be transparent and the findings made public.

The spokesperson said the command regretted the tragic incident which occurred at about 7.45 a.m. during a joint traffic enforcement operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).

He said the team of officers were attempting to stop a black Honda Accord car, marked FST 639 JJ, driven by the deceased’s father, Odunayo Alade, for driving against traffic.

“Rather than complying with lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated toward the enforcement team in an attempt to evade arrest, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a police Buffalo Patrol Truck.

“In an effort to prevent further damage and harm to officers and other road users, barricades were set up to demobilise the fleeing vehicle.

“However, the driver reportedly broke through these barricades, continuing to drive recklessly and endangering lives,” he said.

The police spokesperson buttressed that, given the nature of the driver’s conduct, officers suspected possible criminal activity or a case of abduction.

“A police chase ensued, and in an attempt to immobilise the vehicle, a police corporal discharged a firearm aimed at the tyres.

“Tragically, the bullet missed and struck Kehinde Alade ‘m’, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver.

“He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” he said.

Osifeso said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

He says the police command extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, adding that the command remains resolute in its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring accountability.

  • Nigerian wizkid Joshua Beckford, youngest person to attend Oxford University

Nigerian wizkid Joshua Beckford, youngest person to attend Oxford University

Joshua Beckford gained worldwide recognition as the youngest person ever to study at Oxford University.

The youngster was admitted at age six (taking part in courses which were part of an online learning platform for gifted children) and gained distinctions in both Philosophy and History.

When Beckford’s father, Knox Daniel, wrote to Oxford University advocating for his son’s admission, it was a bold move to challenge the conventional age limits for a programme aimed at children aged eight to 13.

His record remains unmatched, with the next youngest Oxford student being at least two years older at the time of admission.

By 10 months old, Beckford could already identify letters and numbers. At age two and a half, he could read fluently using phonics and had begun learning Japanese and some Mandarin.

Aspiring to become a neurosurgeon, Beckford has already demonstrated remarkable medical knowledge.

Using the Microsoft Surgery Simulator, he has mastered complex surgical procedures, including cataract removal, hernia repair and leg fracture correction. His proficiency with surgical instruments showcases his extraordinary abilities beyond his years.

Beyond medicine, Beckford is multi-talented, excelling in art, Information Technology (IT), sports and foreign languages.

In 2017, Beckford was named Positive Role Model of the Year at the UK’s National Diversity Awards.

The Illumination Foundation of North Carolina also listed him among the Top 30 Most Extraordinary People worldwide who have made societal impact.

Beckford serves as an ambassador for the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), a non-governmental organisation dedicated to mentoring young boys and adolescents in Africa. Within BMAN, he holds the role of Low-Income Families Education (L.I.F.E) Support Ambassador across six countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa and the United Kingdom where he was born.

Joshua Beckford also serves as the face of the National Autistic Society’s Black and Minority (BME) campaign. Diagnosed with high-functioning autism himself, he helps to spread the campaign’s mission.

In 2019, Beckford and his father travelled to Nigeria to launch a live mentoring session, delivering a keynote speech at the University of Lagos before an audience of nearly 5,000 people. Their visit was to raise funds for building a secondary school in Kaduna State, providing education to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

According to a statement on UNILAG’s website, the proposed school was to include classrooms, an administrative block, a laboratory, an ICT Centre and an agriculture green garden and was to be named Joshua Beckford Community School.
