  • Missing UNIOSUN student reappears, says ‘I went to hustle after losing school fees to MMM’

A run away final year student of the Department of Accounting, Osun State University, Yemi Olaniyan has turned himself in after several months of disappearance.

Recall that Olaniyan’s family had earlier alleged that their son dissappeared from the Ojodu Police Station in Lagos State.

The student was presented to journalists by the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, at the police headquarters in Osogbo on Wednesday.

Olaniyan said he had wanted to sleep at the Ojodu Police Station the day he first travelled to Lagos, but changed his mind and went to stay at a shopping complex from where he left for Ilorin the following morning.

He said he started an online job in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, to raise his school fees which he said he lost to the MMM Ponzi scheme like thousands of other Nigerians.

Olaniyan said, “I went to Lagos and it became dark that day. I could not return to Osogbo. I decided to go to the Ojodu Police Station to pass the night. One of my female friends called me and I told her that since I could not make it back to Osogbo that day, I would pass the night at the Ojodu Police Station.

After speaking to her, I changed my mind. I looked for a space at a shopping complex and passed the night there. The following morning, I got a free ride to Ilorin. When I got to Ilorin, I started doing a menial job to raise money.

I had to work to raise money because I had used my school fees for MMM and lost the money. I did not deliberately mislead the public. My friend that released the information online later called and said I should return home.

She said DSS operatives were on her trail. She said she would commit suicide if I didn’t return. Because of that threat, I left Ilorin and went to one of our neighbours, who is a retired officer of the DSS. The man, after listening to my story, led me to the DSS office. I am sorry for whatever embarrassment that misinformation might have caused the police.”

The CP said the student turned himself in to the DSS and the operatives took him to the police.

He said, “Findings showed that the student paid fees last when he was in 200 level and he is now in 400 level. The information in the public tilted towards police harming the student, whereas he never slept at the station.”

The Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof. Labode Popoola, had in 2016 said students of the university owed the school over N1bn.

He had said most of them invested in MMM and lost their fees to the Ponzi scheme.

  • JUST IN: Zamfara teacher flogs student to death

A Zamfara teacher at Government Day Secondary School Sankalawa in Bungudu Local Government Area has allegedly flogged a student to death.

The incident was revealed on Wednesday by Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar-Gummi, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly.

The deputy speaker, who spoke under matters of urgent public importance during the assembly’s sitting in Gusau, said that the house had received several reports on the issue.

According to him, another incident at Government Female Day Secondary School, Kwatarkwashi, had led to the injury of a student in the school after the Vice Principal allegedly subjected her to heavy punishment.

Gummi said: “These problems apart from discouraging our children from acquiring education, also revealed poor attitude to work on the part of teachers in this state.”

He urged the House to invite the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology to explain steps taken to address the issues.

The Speaker, Alhaji Sanusi Rikiji described the actions of the teachers as unfortunate and vowed that the assembly would not allow the matter to pass.

“It is part of our responsibilities to ensure effective security and good learning atmosphere for our children for their future development, therefore, we cannot allow teachers to continue harassing our children from schools,” he said.

The Speaker directed the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology to invite the commissioner to appear before it on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Assembly has passed into law the bill for the establishment of Zamfara State University, Talata-Mafara.

  • Photo: UNILAG lecturers gang stab postgraduate student over parking spot

…we are still investigating – management

A postgraduate student of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Jimi Fatunbi, was allegedly stabbed by two lecturers at the university campus on Wednesday.

The victim identified the lecturers as Dr. BabawaleTaiwo and Dr. Israel Abiala, who lecture at the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics; and Arts and Social Sciences Education respectively.

According to a report by The Punch, the incident happened at the UNILAG’s Faculty of Education roundabout.

Fatunbi, studying for masters in English Language, is a resident of the Henry Carr Postgraduate Hall.

He explained that the incident, which started out as a conversation turned bloody when he alighted from his vehicle to complain about how one of the lecturers banged on the body of his car.

In his words: “I went to take my car from Elkanemi hall, where it was initially parked, to Henry Carr. While I was reversing at Elkanemi Park, I discovered that a vehicle was behind me and the occupants (lecturers) of the vehicle said I was obstructing them.

Dr. Taiwo started banging on my car. I felt he wanted to damage my car and I stopped. I came down to ask him what was actually wrong.

I felt that if I was indeed obstructing, since I was moving away, there was no need for the attack.

He said I had committed an offence and he needed to deal with me, being a lecturer. So, before I knew it, his colleague, Abiala came down from the same car and started manhandling me. In the process, one of them stabbed me in the face.

I was shouting until students came around. I eventually called my hall executives and I was taken to the university’s Medical Centre for treatment.”

He said the lecturers were interrogated by the university’s security officials after they were informed of the situation.

Security officials at the Alpha Base (the university’s security house) also confirmed that the case had been reported.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Toyin Adebule, also confirmed the incident, saying the management had been notified.

He said, “I have confirmed it myself. There is one Dr.Taiwo involved and the case was reported at our security post. The attention of the management has been drawn to the case and we are taking action. It is still under investigation.

The dean and head of department where he works have been informed and the university has requested that the lecturer should come for questioning. We don’t condone indiscipline, hooliganism and violence from anybody at any level.

The university is taking up the matter seriously and we will never leave any stone unturned until we get to the root of the matter. It could be cultism, money or anything. We want to know what caused the matter and we will get back to you. We have asked the security to go after him.”

  • ‘We were poorly fed, allowed to bathe once weekly,’ says freed Lagos student

Six kidnapped pupils of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe who were recently rescued by the Police have said they were maltreated by their abductors.

One of them, Ramon Isiaq, who spoke with Punch said the kidnappers exposed he and his colleagues to rain at the camp where they kept.

He said they were fed with poorly cooked food and that they were only allowed to bathe once in a week.

He said, “After they kidnapped us that day (May 25), we were kept around our school, while a (police) helicopter was patrolling the area. They asked us to hide in a bush so that people in the helicopter would not see us. In the midnight, they sent a boat to pick us.

“The following day, they gave us spaghetti. We ate the same thing in the afternoon and evening. They told us that some security men were sent to fight them, but they killed the men. They threatened that we would die there.

“We were seven in an uncompleted building.

The seventh person is a man that was looking after us. It was a bad experience. We didn’t enjoy our sleep. We always prayed that rain would not fall. If rain fell, it would beat us. Sometimes, they didn’t give us food; at times they gave us food once in a day. At other times, they wouldn’t give us food at all. We ate together. We bathed once or twice in a week.”

He added that at a point they complained about their maltreatment to the leader of the gang.

“After some time, I met with their boss called ‘Chief’ or ‘Chairman’ that we did not enjoy the food they cooked for us and that we should be allowed to prepare our food by ourselves. They didn’t allow us to move around…”

The children were dropped at a creek in Ondo State on Friday after spending 64 days in captivity.

They were abducted at their school in May, after the kidnappers profiled them.
