LASG opposes exhumation of late Chrisland student, Whitney’s corpse

Lagos State Government said it would oppose the exhumation of the corpse of Miss Whitney Adeniran, the 12-year-old student of Chrisland Schools, Opebi, Lagos, who died during the school’s inter-house sports, in February.

The government made the disclosure in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs in the state’s Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Grace Alo, on Saturday in Lagos.

The government said that the ministry of justice was aware of an ongoing dialogue about an alleged plan to exhume the body of the student.

It said that the ministry had yet to receive any official communication requesting the exhumation.

The government said that it would oppose such a request if and when received.

“The circumstances for exhumation under the Coroners’ Systems Law, 2015, do not arise in this case.

“Additionally, it is not our intention to further traumatise the deceased’s family.

“We are working closely with the police who have given their reassurance that the duplicate case file would be forwarded on March 6 to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to aid speedy issuance of legal advice,” it added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a post-mortem report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on March 1 about the student revealed the cause of her death as asphyxia and electrocution.

The student died during Chrisland Schools inter-house sports on Feb. 9 at Agege Stadium, Lagos State.

Asphyxia is a breathing impairment that occurs when there is insufficient oxygen in the body.

He claimed that while at the station, he was forced to transfer the money in his bank account to an OPay account before he was released.

He said that the N155,000 taken from him was for the payment of his accommodation in school.

The case was reported to the state police command and the culprits summoned to respond to the allegations.

Chrisland: Lagos orders inquest into Adeniran’s death

The Lagos State Government has ordered a coroner’s inquest to ascertain the cause of death of the late Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School, who died during the school inter-house sports on Thursday.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), gave the directive in a statement made available to the newsmen on Monday.

Onigbanjo said a thorough investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of Whitney’s death.

He added that findings of the investigation would be made public in due course and appropriate sanctions meted out to anyone found culpable.

“A coroner’s inquest has immediately been requested in line with sections 14 and 15 of the Coroners’ Systems Law, Laws of Lagos State 2015, to determine the cause and circumstances of death.

“By Section 14(1)(d) of the Coroners’ System Law of the State, “a report of death shall be made to any of the agencies for the report of death or the office of the Coroner and be subject to post-mortem examination where there is reasonable cause to believe that the cause of death was: violent, unnatural or suspicious.

“Section 15(1) and (9) further enjoins the Coroner to hold an inquest whenever he or she is informed that the death of the deceased person was in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation or believes an inquest is desirable following the report of a reportable death,” he said.

The commissioner noted that as a government, the security and well-being of citizens are of utmost importance while assuring the public that everything would be done to ensure that the cause of death is known.

We are investigating Chrisland School student’s death – Police

The police command in Lagos State, says it has begun investigation into the death of Miss Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student of Chrisland School in Lagos.

The Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO) in Lagos State, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to NAN on Monday.

Hundeyin said the Pen Cinema police division in Agege was handling the preliminary investigation after the incident.

He said that the Homicide Section of the State Central Investigation Department, Panti, would take over the case on Monday for discreet investigation.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of the School over the death of the student.

The Commissioner for Education in Lagos, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, in a statement said that the school was closed pending the ongoing probe.

“We also note the impact of this unfortunate event on family, friends, and acquaintance of Whitney and call for calm as we assure that no effort will be spared in investigating the incident,” she stated.

Whitney Adeniran, a student of Chrisland School, Opebi in Ikeja branch, reportedly died during a sporting event at Agege Stadium on Thursday.

The parents of the deceased have accused the school of negligence as they continued questioning what happened to their daughter.

The family alleged that the school made no provision for emergency response at the event, hence their daughter was allegedly not administered first aid at the scene of incident.

The mother of the girl emphatically said that her girl had no pre-existing heart condition despite the doctor’s allusion to a cardiac arrest.

Earlier, the management of Chrisland School, in a statement on the incident, claimed Whitney had reported “not-too-buoyant” health on January 20, contrary to claims by her parents.

The school said it opted to take her to a health centre, and not a hospital, based on proximity considerations.

Chrisland dismissed insinuations that there was foul play in the death case while citing that she slumped in public.

“Our immediate response was to take advantage of proximity by identifying the nearest medical facility to take her to, where the doctor on duty administered oxygen and every aid possible to her,” the school claimed.

  • Hoodlums invade Lagos school, chase away students, destroy property

Hoodlums invade Lagos school, chase away students, destroy property

Not fewer than 40 hoodlums invaded a private school, Shalom Group of Schools in Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos State and displaced students and teachers.

The students and management of the school could not gain access into the premises as the main entrance gate had been blocked by the land grabbers, popularly referred to as ”Omo-Onile”.

The proprietress of the school, Mrs Adedayo Odeka, told NAN on Monday that the hoodlums were allegedly led by an “Omo Onile” popularly known as Kaka.

“He claimed that they had won a court judgement to take possession of our land.

“I told him to show me the judgement, as I was not aware of any court case let alone judgment but he refused.

Odeka said that the land was allocated to them by the Federal Government in 1992 and a school was built on it.

“Coming out overnight and claiming the land is uncalled for.

“This is a land we have been occupying for 30 years, students have been graduating year in year out.

“The land is a Federal Government allocation, we don’t have any dealings with ‘Omo Onile’ we have all our documents,” she said.

The proprietress said that the hoodlums came on Saturday and damaged fence and railings to gain access into the compound forcing boarding students to vacate.

She claimed that the case was reported at Ipaja police station but that the police were incapacitated.

“When the case was reported, the police
reluctantly followed us to the site after much pressure but could not act as the hoodlums continued with the erection of the structure,” she said.

She urged the government to arrest the perpetrators of this act and persecute them.

The security guard, Mr Micheal Yakubu, alleged that over 40 hoodlums, who were led by the Kaka group invaded the school around 6:00a:m on Saturday.

“They broke the wall, removed the two main gates to gain access, claiming that the land belonged to them.

“They brought in sand, blocks and started digging and erecting structure on the school field.

“After erecting the structure beyond nine coaches, they blocked the two entrances with blocks, put a small gate and locked it.” he said.

A parent, Mr Osagie Igebo, said that it was disheartening for a group of people to traumatise young children and send them out of boarding school.

“This is wrong for the society and the system, it is sad, look at the kids outside, these are our future generation that we are talking about.

“We have to change this narrative, even if there is a dispute on the property, it should be resolved amicably,” he said.

A teacher, Mrs Ifeoma Abah, said that the land grabbers, who stormed this school on Saturday chased the students out of the hostel.

“They chased the students out without considering whether their parents were  close or far, some of them were half clad but the men didn’t care.

“We came this morning only to be denied access into the school.

“The pupils, students and teachers are stranded, we all have rights as Nigerians to learn,” she said.

A boarder in the school , Miss Success Afolayan, a senior secondary two student, said she felt tortured and traumatised on Saturday when the hoodlums invaded their school.

“I was traumatised, as we were running from pillar to post,  this action is uncalled for, in a learning environment.

“This is going to affect our education, as we do not know when it will be resolved,” she said.

Mrs Oluwatoyin Okafor, the principal, said that the miscreants destroyed some of the school properties and sent them out.

“They destroyed the wall and iron rails and burgled the generator house.

“We were not given audience, the security agents were standing by their side with guns threatening to shoot us if we talk.

“We were left with no option than to call the parents of the boarders, who live in Lagos to pick them, while we pleaded with some teachers and parents to take those who live outside Lagos home with them.

“Our students are preparing for WASCE, NECO and JAMB, they just came to disrupt the school activities,” she said.

Another parent, Mr Ebenezer Akande, a civil servant, said that he was shocked when he saw that the two main gates were blocked.

“As you can see, the children could not gain access into the school.

“The Lagos State Government should wake up and do something concerning this land grabbers,” he said.

The registrar of the school, Mr Akinola Adebayo, said that he got an invitation letter from Zone 2, Onikan, that someone wrote a petition against him.

“When I got there on Thursday, they said that they had a petition against me, that I am using charms and cultists to chase Omo-onile away from their land.

“I told them that I don’t know the petitioner, after I answered the petition, the police asked the two parties (the Omo-onile) and (Shalom school) to come back today Monday Jan. 30,?but I was surprised that the Omo-onile invaded the school on Saturday.

“When we called the police, they said that there was nothing they could do,” he said.

Adebayo urged the government to intervene in the matter so that the children can go back to school.

NAN reports that some students were carrying cardboards with the inscriptions such as “Education is our right”, “say no to Omo-onile oppressors”, “the future is weeping”, “Kaka, why take our right from us”, “Omo-onile, why send us out of our school”, “Government come to our rescue, save us from land grabbers” and many more.

The Police Public Relations Officers, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the story said that the case was not a criminal case.

“The case is not a police case, it is a civil case.

“I will urge the parties not to take laws into their own hands, so that a civil case will not turn to a criminal case,” he said.

Aisha Buhari: Release Aminu now, this is not a military junta-Sen Baba-Ahmed

Vice Presidential candidate of Labour Party, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has called for the unconditional release of the detained undergraduate of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, Aminu Mohammed held over his criticism of Aisha Buhari.

Mohammed was arrested by the police over a post on Twitter, alleging Aisha Buhari, wife of the President, was ‘feeding fat on poor citizens’ money.’

The VP candidate disclosed this in a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed said citizens had the right to criticise the government without fear.

While we will never as a party condone indecorous speech and disrespect to elders, we wish to remind the Buhari State House that they rode to power on the personal denigration of their opponents and empty promises without slightest clues of good governance.

“Individuals must be free to express themselves freely and any infraction of law be pursued as civil matter and not through high-handed abuse of power. This is not 1984. We lend our voice to the genuine calls for his immediate release,” Baba-Ahmed said in condemning the arrest of Aminu over his post on Aisha Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari was the military Head of State in 1984, but his regime, which was accused of poor human rights record, was toppled in 1985.

Love ‘wahala’ : PhD student sets self ablaze, hugs woman for rejecting marriage proposal

A 30-year-old PhD student died after setting himself ablaze and trying to kill a woman for allegedly turning down his marriage proposal at Government Institute of Science (GIS) in Aurangabad Monday afternoon, the police said.

The deceased was identified as Gajanan Munde. According to the police, he followed the woman to the college where he set himself on fire and hugged the woman in a bid to kill her. The Osmanpura police registered a case against Munde.

The police in their preliminary probe learned that Munde wished to marry her but the woman had been rejecting his proposal.

“None of them studied there as both of them were doing PhD from another college in Aurangabad. The woman had gone to the GIS to meet an assistant professor. And when she was inside the professor’s cabin, the accused barged in, locked the door from inside and poured fuel on himself,” said the police.

He then set himself ablaze using a lighter and hugged the woman, the police said.

College employees rushed in after hearing the woman’s cry for help, broke open the door and doused the flames with the help of a fire extinguisher.

They rushed the man and the woman to the Government Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries late on Monday. The woman sustained 55 per cent burn injuries and is being treated at the hospital.

Senior police inspector Geeta Bagawade from Osmanpura police station said, “We have registered a first information report (FIR) against Munde. We are probing the matter further.”

  • Why students perform poorly in NECO exams – SERVICOM

Why students perform poorly in NECO exams – SERVICOM

The Compact with all Nigerians (SERVICOM) has identified poor logistics as a major factor responsible for poor performance by students in the National Examinations Council (NECO) across the country.

Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, the Chief Service Delivery Officer of SERVICOM, made this known when she presented the Compliance Evaluation (SCE) report to the Registrar and the management of NECO on Tuesday at the agency’s Headquarters in Minna, Niger State.

The SCE routine report is part of SERVICOM’s mandate to carry out independent surveys on quality of services of MDAs, to ensure citizens-focus service delivery among MDAs.

The exercise is to identify gaps in service delivery and making recommendations by the SERVICOM to improve customers’ satisfaction and accountability.

According to Akajemeli, the exercise was conducted in 16 states and Federal Capital Territory out of the 36 states of the federation.

She said the mystery shopping conducted by the evaluators and the feedback received from the general public revealed that there are websites where students subscribed for NECO examination before the examination takes place.

The act, the SERVICOM boss said could discourage students from preparing for the examination and thereby, dropping the standards of the examination body.

She also identified occasional shortage of examination materials such as question papers which she said had affected the smooth administration of examination and could lead to malpractice during the exercise.

The SERVICOM boss also listed other weaknesses to include poor logistical arrangements as examination papers were either carried by motorcycles or private cars.

“Some supervisors were seen conveying sensitive materials to different centres using public transport such as motorbikes and tricycles.

“This exposes them to danger and leads to late arrival of question papers to the centres, ” she said.

Other areas of weaknesses she said were meagre payments to the examination supervisors, payment for their services not promptly done among others, adding that it could lead them to engage in examination malpractices.

She, however, urged the council to guard against all the observable challenges to guarantee the credibility of the body.

“Systems should be put in place by  NECO management to safely convey supervisors and sensitive materials to examination centres.

“This would reduce the risks associated with usage of motorbikes and tricycles to ensure safety of staff and materials, ” she advised.

The SERVICOM boss, nevertheless, assured to collaborate with the council in actualising a continuous improvement on the quality of services delivery to the citizens.

Responding, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, Registrar of NECO, appreciated the SERVICOM management for the assessment reports.

Represented by Malam Audu Fuka, Director, General Services Development, Wushishi said the council would act on the weaknesses identified by SERVICOM for correction.

He, however, said the council had procured 70 operational vehicles for the first time to east their works during the examination exercise.
