LASU management reacts to killing of former student

The management of the Lagos State University (LASU),Ojo, has assured the entire students of the institution that all issues surrounding the attack on one of its former students and a staff member will be adequately addressed.

Mr Ademola Adekoya , the Coordinator of the Centre for Information Press and Public Relations,LASU, gave the assurance in a statement he signed and released to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

Adekoya said that the management commended the students’ union and the entire students for their maturity and restraint since the attack by suspected armed robbers on the former student and a staff member of LASU occurred.

“The management received with great shock, the report of an attack on a former student of the university, Mr. Nurudeen Alowonle, and a staff member, Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi, a Senior Assistant Registrar, which led to the untimely death of Alowonle.

“The incident took place in the evening of Wednesday , Aug.18, outside the university campus, along the Egbeda-Igando Road.

“The university management is deeply saddened by the incident and expresses its heartfelt condolences to the immediate and extended families of the deceased, his colleagues, friends and the students’ union,” he said.

Adekoya added that since the sad incident occurred, the social media had been circulating several accounts, many of which were inaccurate and misleading, of circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“We have refrained from making a hurried statement until now in order to ascertain the facts considering the very sensitive nature of the incident,” he said in the statement.

    Adekoya said that the university was putting the true position about the incident before the public based on the outcome of its investigations as follows;

“That the deceased former student, Alowonle ,was yet to receive his certificate due to an ongoing disciplinary case that he was facing in the university and a panel presiding over his case began sitting in 2019.

“The case continued until 2020 but the panel could not sit due to the COVID-19 pandemic then. He was, however, invited by the panel, along other students who had ongoing disciplinary cases to defend themselves.

“Alowonle appeared before the panel that day and was even the first student attended to by the panel, and his case was concluded before 2.00 p.m.

“He ostensibly remained on the university campus until late in the evening during which time he met up with Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi,” the statement said.

Adekoya said that the duo stayed at the university senior staff club until past 8.00 p.m., after which they left together through the Iba Gate of the university for their destinations.

“Unable to get vehicles at the school junction as it was late in the day, the duo were said to have trekked several meters away from the gate ostensibly in search of a vehicle.

“Unfortunately, they were attacked by suspected men of the underworld, dispossessed them of their valuables and shot them.

“The staff member, Majekodunmi, was lucky to have escaped with gunshot wounds and eventually got helped by passers-by to a nearby hospital, but the former student did not survive the attack.

“The body of the deceased was said to have been deposited in a mortuary in Lagos, while the injured staff member is currently receiving treatment at the University Health Centre and responding well to treatment,” he said.

Adekoya said that the university security department was working with the security agencies to investigate the sad incident with the aim of bringing the perpetrators to book.

  • School calls for probe of clinic where its student died

School calls for probe of clinic where its student died

The Management of the Premiere Academy, an upscale, elite secondary school in Lugbe, Abuja, has called for investigation of the medical procedures applied by Queens Clinic, Abuja on her student, Keren Akpagher, who died in controversial circumstances while on admission in the health facility last June.

Stella Fawehinmi, Lead Director of the school, made the call on Thursday when she addressed newsmen.

Fawehinmi, who spoke in the school premises, said it became necessary for the members of the school’s management, who had been thrown into mourning following the death of the student, to address several dangerous and pernicious allegations flying around in respect of the Akpgher’s death.

According to Fawehinmi, the best way to address what she identified as “misinformation flying around regarding our daughter’s death,” was to shine some light on what happened to Akpagher from the point she was admitted into the clinic and when she slipped into coma, leading to her death.

She revealed that Akpagher was a diabetic patient, a condition the school had managed for two and half years without incident.

She condemned the attempt to contrive allegations of rape on Akpagher, calling it a “thoughtless cruelty to the memory of their student’s exemplary life” by individuals whom she believed were desperate to impugn the integrity of the school.

She said what the school’s matron witnessed when she visited their student in the clinic in addition to serious unanswered questions have convinced her that the clinic has some questions to answer.

The school Matron, Grace Salami, who also addressed the press, revealed that she became apprehensive when she got to Queens Clinic and saw the student’s condition.

According to her, the student’s mother, Vivien Akpagher, had alerted her that Akpagher, who spent the weekend with her family, was in crisis and being taken to a hospital.

Salami recalled that Mrs. Akpagher told her their daughter was in a state of delirium but was alarmed when she got to the hospital and was confronted with frightening indicators.

According to her, Miss Akpagher’s blood sugar that was 112 three days earlier when she left the school had shot to 423.

Amid that grave state of her blood sugar, she learned that the hospital had proceeded to sedate her, a step that she insisted had no professional medical precedence and has been known to lead to fatality.

“The girl was in coma already and was losing pulse,” disclosed Salami.

The Matron narrated that on further enquiry, she was told that the doctor had closed.

In a frantic effort to save what seemed to her a precarious situation, she requested that they move the girl to a better manned and equipped hospital, but Mrs. Akpagher dismissed the suggestion.

  • No student, staff died of COVID-19 complications in UI – Managemnt

No student, staff died of COVID-19 complications in UI – Managemnt

The management of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, says no member of staff or student of the institution died of COVID-19 complications as being purportedly reported in some quarters.

Mr Olatunji Oladejo, the university’s Director of Public Communications, made the clarification in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ibadan.

Oladejo said the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebola Ekanola, had only said at a zoom session, that the university could have recorded up to 10 deaths, arising from the third wave variant, if necessary precautions were not taken.

“The acting vice-chancellor said if we had not been proactive enough on the compliance with the COVID-19 protocols, we could have recorded up to 10 deaths arising from the third wave variant,” Oladejo said.

According to him, the university management had earlier stated in the university’s periodic Bulletin of July 19 that there was need to adequately observe all the necessary COVID-19 protocols in the campus.

He said: “The management also urged members of the University of Ibadan community to keep to safety protocols.

“Where were the families and names of those who are dead, either members of staff or students arising from COVID-19 difficulties, complications, confusions, and barriers, even if the acting VC actually said it ?”

Oladejo said that in the university’s bulletin the management emphasised that observing the COVID-19 safety protocols were imperative now more than ever.

“The fact that University of Ibadan Health Services has not recorded any confirmed case of COVID-19 or an increase in flu-related/flu-like symptoms (for this season/time of the year) in the last three months, suggests that if we are proactive in observing all health safety protocols, we can effectively prevent and spare UI community from the third wave/new variant of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Hence, it is important that we fully implement all recommended precautions at all levels.

“Because, it has been observed that though, level of knowledge of necessary precautions is high, level of implementation/compliance is low.

“All hands must be on deck, especially in the Halls of Residence, in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. Each person must take direct responsibility of his/her health safety,” Oladejo said.

Also, the Coordinator, UI COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee, Prof. Victoria Adetunji, told NAN that the acting vice-chancellor never said we lost 10 people to COVID-19.

“We use this medium to debunk the story that UI lost 10 persons to COVID-19 complications and the reporter who first reported it has pulled it down,” Adetunji said.

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday sentenced a student of Lagos State University (LASU), Afeez Ogunbowale, to 21 years’ imprisonment for involvement in armed robbery and rape of two fellow LASU students.

According to reports, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo sentenced Ogunbowale after finding him guilty of five counts bordering on conspiracy, rape and armed robbery.

She held that testimony of the victims were compelling, adding that they were able to positively identify Ogunbowale as one of the culprits.

“The defendant is hereby sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of armed robbery and 21 years’ imprisonment each for counts of rape.

“The sentences are to run concurrently,” she said.

On hearing the sentence, Ogunbowale who has been suspended by LASU over the case, wept profusely at the dock.

NAN reports that prosecution team led by Mrs O.A Bajulaiye-Bishi, had said that the defendant committed the offences alongside others who are at large, on April 18, 2018, at the Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

“The defendant and his accomplices, while armed with a gun, knife, machete and bottle, robbed the two students in their off campus accommodation.

“The offences contravene Sections 260(1) and 297(2)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” she said.

NAN reports that in their testimonies on Nov. 4, 2019, the two students, told the court that they lost their virginities to the attack.

The witnesses said they were robbed by five men but raped by two members of the gang – Ogunbowale and another – who is at large.

They said that they were able to identify Ogunbowale through Facebook, adding that they belonged to the same faculty.

The complainants testified that when they confronted the convict at a police station, he prostrated and begged for forgiveness.

    Kidnapped Plateau varsity student released

Prof. Yohana Izam, the Vice Chancellor, Plateau State University, Bokkos, has announced the release of a student of the institution, Stanley Showul-Mushi, kidnapped by gunmen on Thursday.

Izam announced the rescue of the final year accounting student in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Jos.

The vice chancellor said that it was gratifying that the student was eventually released by his captors on Friday evening.

He commended the security operatives involved in the operation that led to the release of Showul-Mushi.

“As an institution, we are grateful for the safe return of our hitherto missing student who came back unhurt.

“Our earlier caution to our students to minimise off-campus late evening and night shuttles is still relevant.

”The university axis from Bokkos through Diram and Ndar has been infiltrated by merchants of crime who cash in on the vulnerability of the largely defenceless students’ population,” Izam said.

An anonymous source in the institution had told NAN that Showul-Mushi was reportedly returning to the campus from Bokkos town when the incident happened.

The victim, unfortunately, entered the kidnappers’ car and they took the N3,000 in his pocket and cleared the money in his bank account with his Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card.

“But thank God, the pressure mounted by security operatives compelled the kidnappers to release Showul-Mushin on Friday evening,” the source said.

SAD! Missing 300-Level Law student found in Imo hospital mortuary

The body of a 300-level Law student of the Imo State University, Owerri, Kingsley Chiwueze, has been found five days after disappearance.

Chiwueze was on Monday declared missing after efforts made to find him proved abortive.

Chiwueze had two weeks ago made his intention known to vie for the office of Senate President of the National Association of Imo State Students.

The President, Students Union Government, IMSU, Arinze Oguike, who confirmed the development noted that the body was found in the morgue of the Umuguma General Hospital, Owerri, on Sunday.

He revealed students of the institution stormed the mortuary and the attendant told them that the corpse was deposited by the management of the St. Joseph Hospital, Wetheral, Owerri.

The student leader said, “The attendant told us that Chiwueze’s corpse was brought by people from the St. Joseph hospital, Wetheral. We will go to the hospital to find out how they took custody of the student.”

One Darlington Ibekwe, said, “Kingsley hailed from the Oguta Local Government Area. Kingsley was declared missing on Monday and was just found; it happened that he was one of the victims of the shooting on Douglas Road and the most painful thing about all of this is the fact that the state government’s media handlers have come out to say that no life was lost to the security challenges.

“When Divine, an IMSU student, was shot dead last week, someone called her irresponsible and asked what a girl would be doing outside by that time.”

The police spokesman for the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that he had not been briefed about the latest development.
