He therefore, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling crime head-on and urged officers to remain steadfast in their mission to rid the state of criminal activities.

  • *Drugs will shatter your dreams, PRIMORG, NDLEA warn students, youths*

*Drugs will shatter your dreams, PRIMORG, NDLEA warn students, youths*

Students and young Nigerians have been advised to flee from drugs if they desire to attain their potential and become responsible and successful adults.

The advice was handed down to Senior School students at Goshen High School, Kubwa, FCT, during a Safe Without Drugs (SWiD) Initiative Campaign in secondary schools by the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development, PRIMORG, on Friday, 7th February 2025.

PRIMORG uses the project to promote Drugs Demand Reduction in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

“Drug abuse is a grave issue. It damages your future, destroys your destiny, and makes you a burden and dependent on people associated with you. The fact is that you will not attain your full potential in life if you are hooked on drugs.

“Therefore, as a student, you must run away from drug abuse or the use of any psychoactive substance – as it is wreaking people’s lives and homes and making a lot of individuals useless. We don’t want you to touch drugs because it destroys one’s future,” said the Executive Director of the Progressive Impact Organisation for Community Development, PRIMORG, Okhiria Agbonsuremi.

He told the senior secondary 1, 2, and 3 students who were in attendance that the essence of the advocacy is to sensitize them to the dangers drug abuse can cause and equip them with skills to be able to repel any form of substance abuse.

Agbonsuremi lauded the school management for cooperation and the students for their rapt attention during the enlightenment exercise and interest in joining an anti-drugs club formed in the course of the programme while revealing PRIMORG’s readiness to partner with more schools, parents, and organizations to expose early the menace of drug abuse to students and youths.

“The high point of today’s event is setting up the SWiD Club to sustain the messages in schools. We (PRIMORG) are always glad to partner with more schools, parents, teachers, and organizations to reach more students before they leave secondary school and enter the more complicated world.

On his part, NDLEA’s Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Ahmed Abdulfatai Ismail, cautioned the students against accepting drugs from anybody; and avoid secondary smoking.

Ismail taught the students coping skills when they find themselves in environments where people are using drugs and tasked parents to pay attention to the contents their wards are exposed to on the internet and social media.

He stressed that preventing young people from becoming drug abusers remains a better and easier way out for any society, hence the reason NDLEA is partnering with PRIMORG and other organizations to raise awareness and reach out to students early to stop them from being destroyed.

“Do not use drugs or accept them from anybody, and when you stay around in a place where people are smoking, you are as good as the person smoking – so you must stay away from secondary smoking.

“For parents and guidance, you have to talk to your wards about drugs, don’t think they don’t know, and limit them from visiting unhealthy websites. I tell you that prevention is always healthier and better than cure,” Ismail warned.

Towing the same line, the National Coordinator, Re-Orientation Advocates of Nigeria, Charles Olufemi’s message to the students was, “Drugs can end all your dreams.”

His words: “There is no reason for anybody to play with drug abuse. People go into drugs because of their level of knowledge, and I can tell you that free drugs can end your dream.

“Don’t be excited about those musicians you see smoking; in a few years, you will find out that they are no more, and what has happened is that the problems associated with smoking break them down – so do not emulate them.

“Drugs cannot change your lives and situations that you encounter. It doesn’t resolve emotional problems or academic or marital issues. So, nothing should take you into drug abuse because drugs are dangerous. Drugs end lives and dreams,” Olufemi cautioned.

GOOD NEWS! WAEC to now allow students resit failed subjects

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a new initiative, which will allow students to resit their WASSCE papers as early as January and February 2025.

This marks a significant shift from the previous system, where candidates had to wait for the next private exam cycle.

The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, disclosed this while speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show in Ghana on Tuesday, December 31st.

He explained that the new programme, referred to as WASSCE PC1, provides a faster route for students to improve their grades.

“Students who access their results now and realise they need to resit one or two papers have until 8th January to register online through our website or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés. The exams will take place from 24th January to 15th February 2025,” Mr Kapi stated.

According to him, to aid candidates in their preparations, WAEC plans to expedite the release of chief examiners’ reports, saying, “These reports will provide detailed feedback on where students may have gone wrong and how they can better approach their studies and the examination process.

“We’ve advertised this programme widely through banners, our website, and our results checker platform to ensure that both students and parents are aware,” Mr Kapi added.

He said students whose results have been cancelled are also eligible to sit the WASSCE PC1 exams, provided they have not been banned for some years for malpractice.

“For now, the exams will be conducted in regional capitals due to the limited number of candidates. Prospective participants are urged to complete their registration by the 8th of January to take advantage of this opportunity.”

WAEC, however, expressed optimism that this initiative will allow candidates to quickly improve their grades and qualify for the next cycle of admissions, avoiding a year-long delay in their academic progress.

  • UNIBEN VC narrates nasty experience of her abduction carried out by students

UNIBEN VC narrates nasty experience of her abduction carried out by students

Professor Lilian Salami, the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, has narrated how students of the institution, during a protest, pelted her with sachet water and ordered her to read a script after them.

According to report, Prof. Salami disclosed this in her new book titled “So Much To Say: A Memoir,” written as a chronicle of her five-year tenure as the 10th Vice Chancellor of the university.

Salami also explained that she was abducted by the students who forced her to trek to the main gate of the institution to address them over the increase of the penalty of N10,000 to N20,000 for the late payment of school charges after two weeks of resumption during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

She alleged that the protest as well as other protests that happened during her five years as the head of the university were masterminded and sponsored by cabals.

She averred that the decision to increase the penalty was taken by the university council, which frowned at the level of students’ school charges indebtedness needed to drive the session.

While noting that the penalty was only targeted at late payers, she added that all efforts by the Dean of Students Affairs to calm them down were to no avail.

She disclosed that the institution’s chief security officer, the police divisional officer, and the area commander visited and urged her to reverse the decision but she stood her ground.

“The students took to the expressway with musicians providing music for them and caterers cooking on the highway.

“On the third day, they had decided to abduct me, forcing me to come to the highway to address them. The DCP, DPO, as well as security officials, were in my house asking me to address the students, assuring me of my safety.

“By this time, the mob has pulled down my chain-wire fence and dragged me out of my official residence to force me to trek to the main gate.

“Somehow, some of them advised against trekking. So, I was allowed to ride in my Hilux van with students sitting on the hood, bonnet and windows.

“Guns were brandished and some were shown to me under their shirts. Finally, as I got to the main gate, I was forced to climb on the Hilux van and directed to repeat an address after one of the ring leaders, which I did.

“At that point, some pure water sachets were thrown at me. After reading the address and ensuring that the ICT unit had complied, I was let go. I was taken to the DPO’s and then to the CP’s offices. The CP later booked for my one-night stay in a hotel,” she recounted.

She alleged that the cabals seeking to discredit her administration sponsored students and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to protest against her.

The purpose of the protest, according to her, was to create the impression that she was inept and incapable of running the institution as a Vice Chancellor and thus compel the Federal Government to remove her.

Salami stated that the cabals who see themselves as untouchable include ex-students and contractors, among others.

“They claim that in the past, they were adequately compensated with money, with some of them on the payroll, while others got cash for unexecuted contracts. Still, others were given admission and hostel accommodation slots in place of cash.

“A couple of groups had reached out to me to be educated and initiated into the cabal groups, which I politely declined.

“These were unarguably the platforms and persons who apparently might have vowed to continuously cause unrest during the tenure of my administration,” she stated.

She also asserted that her investigation indicated that her security was compromised and that there were professors who were in constant discussion with the students to make sure that she was humiliated and influence the Federal Government to remove and replace her for lack of capacity to govern a university.

  • Why students must shun prostitution, drug abuse – Patience Jonathan

Why students must shun prostitution, drug abuse – Patience Jonathan

Mrs Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised schoolgirls against prostitution and drug abuse.

Jonathan gave the advice in Abuja on Monday, at the National Female Students Conference and launching of maiden Magazine tagged, “The Face of Women’s Libbers.”

The event was organised by the National Association of Female Students (ANFS) as part of activities to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

Represented by Mrs Safiya Ogo, Director-General, Women of Change Initiative, the former First Lady noted the involvement of young girls in all kinds of social vices.

She identified some of the ungodly activities as drug abuse, prostitution, girl child trafficking, alcoholism, cultism, cybercrimes, indecent dressing and rituals among others.

Jonathan, adopted as the Grand Matron of ANFS at the event, described the development as “worrisome”, adding that such absurd actions were taking a toll on young girls, particularly female undergraduate students.

“These practices are undoubtedly barriers to the achievement of the goals and aspirations of these girls and women.

“We also have had reports of young girls who are victims of yahoo’ rituals, resulting mostly from the crave for quick wealth.

“This craving for quick wealth can be achieved through hard work and selflessness, while maintaining one’s dignity as a woman,” she said.

Jonathan, therefore, urged the female students to shun prostitution, drug abuse and all manner of vices but instead, be role models with dignity as women, wives and mothers.

She advised the ANFS to embark on a massive campaign to sensitise female students, including the males, to remain focused and law abiding for them to excel in their chosen careers.

“You are not only the future mothers and wives of this country, but also future leaders, businesswomen, heads of parastatals and captains of industries.

“We live in a competitive world, therefore, in preparation for your future role, you must be well equipped and excel in your various professional callings.

“One way to equip our girls ahead of these positions is the girl-child education. This is because education is the key to development,” she said.

Also, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration, stressed the need to celebrate the potential, resilience, and achievements of girls everywhere.

Benjamins-Laniyi, who was also adopted as the Matron of the association in FCT, described girls’ education as the cornerstone of societal progress.

According to her, education unlocks opportunities, breaks cycles of poverty, and fosters inclusive growth.

Similarly, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, founder, Helpline Social Support Initiative, advised female students to continue to raise their voices for change through positive activism.

Ahmadu, however, stressed the need for the students to be serious with their academics and aspire for greatness.

Earlier, the National President of ANFS, Omoniyi Alice, said that the event was organised to discuss the future of female students across the world.

This, according to Alice, will ensure that female students are given every opportunity to succeed.

“We live in a world that is rapidly changing, and it is essential that we adapt our education system to meet these changes.

“As the future leaders of our society, it is crucial that our female students are given every opportunity to excel and be able to compete on a level playing field, free from discrimination or unfair barriers.

“We must also provide our female students with the resources they need to succeed. These include access to quality education, mentorship programmes, and scholarships.

“It is our responsibility as educators and leaders to ensure that our female students have the tools they need to succeed,” she added.

Alice equally called on relevant stakeholders to promote a culture of inclusion and respect for women in schools and universities.

“This means creating an environment where women feel safe and supported, where they are valued for their contributions and their ideas.

“We must also challenge the traditional gender roles that have limited women’s opportunities in the past,” the president said.

On her part, the founder and pioneer president of the association, Safiya Sarki, said that ANSF was established to give female student a voice.

Sarki explained that the move was in response to the male-dominated National Association of Nigerian Students, where only two seats were reserved for females out of the 15 leadership positions in the association.
