Number of students kidnapped in Kebbi school unknown – Police

The Police Command in Kebbi says it is yet to ascertain the number of students kidnapped from Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri, Ngaski Local Government Area on Thursday.

The Command’s spokesman, DSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi on Friday that reports making the rounds that 50 students were kidnapped form the school were false.

He stated that: “the attention of the police has been drawn to reports made by some media stations that a police vehicle was used in kidnapping about 50 students of the FGC.

“A White Hilux Van with registration No. KBSJ 29 belonging to a High Court judge with inscription of Kebbi State Judiciary, hijacked by bandits on Birnin Yauri road was the one used in the kidnapping and not a police vehicle as stated by some media stations.

“The Command wishes to make it clear and set the records straight that yet to be ascertained number of students are still missing as rescue operation is still on-going.’’

Abubakar expressed the Command’s commitment to brief members of the media as events unfolded.

He urged the public and media to ensure their information was correct before drawing conclusions.

UK-based Reuters News Agency and Qatar-based Al-Jazeera Television reported that 80 students and five teachers were taking away from the school by the kidnappers who also killed a policeman in the attack.

US announces priority visa appointments for Nigerian students

The United States authorities have announced “priority visa appointments” for Nigerian students who will resume studies during the Fall.

In a statement on Friday, Susan Tuller, U.S Mission Country Consular Coordinator, said the two visa processing centres in Nigeria – the U.S Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General office in Lagos – will assist student visa applicants in a timely fashion while keeping personnel and customers safe.

She warned applicants against the use of third-party services, including touts, and fixers who broker visa appointments.

“As we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our staff and customers, processing student visas remains a high priority for the U.S. Mission in Nigeria,” Tuller said.

“We will increase the number of student visa appointments in May and June to ensure that we can offer appointments to as many students as possible. If your U.S. studies are scheduled to begin this Fall, we encourage you to schedule your appointment as quickly as possible.”

Tuller explained that all student visa appointments must be booked through the U.S. Travel Docs website at www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/.

She said Nigeria sends more students to American colleges and universities than any other country in Africa and is the eleventh largest source worldwide of international students to the United States.

“In academic year 2019-2020, a record-breaking number of nearly 14,000 Nigerians pursued graduate and undergraduate degrees in the United States.

“Both Nigeria and the United States benefit when Nigerian students study at one of our world-class educational institutions.”

Insecurity: End abduction of students, staffers now, ASSU tells FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM) on Thursday called on the Federal Government to urgently save educational institutions from the grips of criminal elements.

Chairperson of ASUU-FUAM, Dr Simon Ejembi, said the call became necessary following the spate of insecurity in the country which continues to deteriorate every passing day.

Some students of FUAM were abducted on campus by gunmen a few days ago from a lecture hall where they were reading.

Ejembi said that the event added to the list of campuses and secondary schools premises that have been attacked in the country in recent times.

“The current trend of students and staff abduction can only suggest that there is a siege on the educational system which apparently targets a complete crippling of the major organ of national development and this should not be condoned by any responsible government.

“ASUU-FUAM condemns the recent attack and abduction of our students and the unchallenged siege in totality and in all ramification and call that the perpetrators of this dastardly acts must be urgently brought to book.

“We, therefore, call the powers that be, the relevant security agents and agencies to save this nation from total invasion by some elements inimical to the development of this great nation and from losing its sovereignty,” he stated.
