Why I built multi-million Naira music studio in OAU – 2baba

Nigerian music icon, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2baba, on Monday said he built a multi-million Naira music studio at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun, to reciprocate the kind gesture extended to him by the university.

2baba disclosed this during a breakfast chat organised by “The 2baba Foundation”,  held in Lagos.

He said he was inducted as a Fellow into the university’s School of Music, which he treasures.

“I built the multi-million music studio in OAU because I was given an honourary degree, as a Fellow of the school of music of the university.

“That was really huge honour for me and I promised them I was going to build a standard music studio for the school, which I did.

“My aim is to give the students a standard space for creativity and I hope that the next generation of super stars will emernate from there.

“Also, my next album will be packaged in that studio,” 2baba said.

I was working in three studios at the same time- Ckay recounts struggles before fame

Chukwuka Ekweani, better known by his stage name Ckay (SEE-kay) is undoubtedly one of the biggest revelations of 2021 in the Nigerian music industry.

Recounting his struggles before fame, Ckay said: “When I moved to Lagos, I had to make money somehow to take care of myself because I wasn’t depending on my parents, so I started producing in studios around to make a living while pursuing my own stuff.

I didn’t have friends, and I was literally just walking up to studios I found online and I would introduce myself as a producer and tell them what I could do for them.

I was working in three studios at the same time, one in Dolphin, Ikoyi; another in Surulere, and the last one around Alfred Riwane in the boys’ quarters of a house there. Then I started working in Chocolate City at some point, making it four. I did all this because I had to survive”, he told Guardian Life.

Asked how music began for him, he said: “I grew up in Kaduna and it was very uninteresting. My parents didn’t let me go out a lot because they were strict Christian parents. My life revolved around home, church, and school. My childhood was very regular and my parents were middle-class earners so it’s not like I had rich parents and I was balling, it was just very average but I had a deep curiosity for music that led me to learn how to play the piano, guitar and eventually producing and that’s kind of how everything started.”

As a media and entertainment company, its major objective centres on nurturing and promoting young talents, content development and fostering innovations and ideas.”

Continuing, he opened up on the motivation behind his effort. “AkwaAmaka Production Limited was also born out of my desire to set up a leading entertainment industry in sub-Sahara Africa. But majorly, the motivation is to help empower the Nigerian youths for a better tomorrow. Besides, I have a strong passion for entertainment,” he articulated.

So far, the company has not performed badly. “We have been doing our best and would not give up until we get to where we are heading to. We have a movie production company which has produced five standard movies to our credit for the global market,” he stated.

He further told the court that he became aware of the case after receiving a call from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to clarify what the monies paid into his company’s account were meant for.

“I got a call from EFCC that I should come to the Abuja office and clarify the transactions that took place between my companies and DAAR Investment Ltd., which led to the transfers to my account.”

The bank document which showed the transactions was tendered before the court by the prosecutor.

The witness confirmed that monies were transferred on six different dates into the accounts of two of his companies, Archisynthesis Ltd. and Wood Country Investment Ltd.

“One of the studios work is at Kpaduma Asokoro Abuja, others are located across the country, because I’m his sole architect,” the witness said.

When asked if there was documented evidence for the contract to build and renovate, Oluwarinu said that he had worked for Dokpesi since 1993 and documentation had never been an issue.

“I cannot recall whether we had an oral or written agreement for the jobs because my relationship with him is cordial and I have worked for him since 1993.”

During cross examination, the witness told Mr Kanu Agabi, (SAN), that he had worked for Dokpesi since 1993 because of his integrity and forthrightness.

Earlier, Dokpesi was re-arraigned on a seven-count amended charge for allegedly receiving N2.1 billion from the Office of the National Security Adviser without executing any contract.

He pleaded not guilty to the amended seven-count charge.

The judge, Justice John Tsoho adjourned the matter until May 28, for continuation of trial.

Dokpesi and his company, DAAR Investment Company Ltd. were initially arraigned on Dec. 9, 2015 before Justice Gabriel Kolawole on a six-count charge bordering on money laundering and procurement fraud.
