La Liga title now in our hands – Suarez

Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez was proud to prove the matchwinner for victory over Osasuna on Sunday.

The veteran striker scored perhaps the most important goal of Atletico’s campaign so far to complete the comeback against Osasuna on Sunday. Los Rojiblancos had fallen behind in the encounter, with Real Madrid going above them in the table until Suarez’s strike two minutes from time.

“I don’t think we deserved to suffer as much as we ended up doing because we had one of our best halves of the season,” Suarez said at full time.

“We missed lots of chances, including me.

“We have to get used to suffering in order to win LaLiga and that’s what happened today.

“Everyone says that [suffering] is Atletico’s thing. I didn’t think there was as much [suffering] as this!

“But anyway, the effort, the sacrifice that this team is making… there are lots of people working to achieve our goals.

“Now it’s time to enjoy it, stay calm and prepare in the week ahead.”

Suarez’s goal arrived after, as he mentioned, he missed a great chance in the first half, with his effort only hitting the post from close range.

“Sometimes, as a striker, it’s easier to let your head drop and to get yourself down, but that’s never been me,” Suarez admitted.

“I’m happy and proud of that. If you fight, you never give up and you can achieve an objective like today.”

Atletico take on Real Valladolid at the Estadio Jose Zorrilla knowing that a win will seal the title.

“It’s in our hands,” Suarez added.

“It’s the most important game of the season. We’ve had many, but this is so important in achieving our goal.”

Premier League club make sensational move for Luis Suarez

Premier League club Liverpool have made a sensational move for Atletico Madrid ace Luis Suarez.

Cuatro says Liverpool have an offer on the table to re-sign Suarez this summer.

Both the Reds and Inter Miami are trying to tempt the forward away from Atletico Madrid following his sensational season in La Liga.

The Uruguayan has scored 19 goals from 26 league appearances this season to help Atleti challenge for the title, but has no clause in his contract to prevent him moving on at the end of the season.

While he is happy to stay put with Diego Simeone’s men, that hasn’t put Liverpool off sounding out the forward about replacing Mohamed Salah should he leave.

UCL: How we’ll stop Luis Suarez – Chelsea captain

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has a plan to stop high flying Luis Suarez in the Champions League round of 16 first leg clash on Tuesday.

They will be hoping to secure an advantage for the second leg, but Azpi will be all too aware of the threat Atletico and Suarez pose.

“The best way to defend against him is to keep him as far as possible from the goal and that’s a collective job,” Azpilicueta told reporters.

“I faced him when he was at Liverpool and Barcelona in the Champions League so I know he’s a great striker.

“We know his numbers and we know wherever he has played, he has scored lots of goals so we have to try to defend against him together and keep all their attacking players away from our goal.”

Stop asking me about Suarez – Koeman

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman has dismissed questions about Luis Suarez.

Suarez has starred for LaLiga leaders Atletico Madrid ever since he was pushed out of Barcelona this summer.

Suarez was again brought up in Friday’s press conference, with the player that Koeman shipped off to Atletico Madrid in the summer now the joint-top scorer of LaLiga Santander

“I don’t like to answer these questions,” the coach replied.

“He’s a great player, but we took the decision that we took.

“If you ask me every time he scores…”

Suarez double snatches win for La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid at Eibar

Luis Suarez’s double, including a late penalty kick, helped Atletico Madrid to snatch a 2-1 win at Eibar on Thursday.

Eibar took the lead through Serbian goalkeeper Marco Dmitrovic who slammed home a 12th minute penalty kick for what was, unsurprisingly, his first goal for the club.

It was also the first time a goalkeeper had scored in the division since Deportivo La Coruna’s Dani Aranzubia in 2011.

However, Uruguayan striker Suarez netted in the 40th minute to level for Diego Simeone’s league leaders.

They are now seven points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, having played one less game.

Dmitrovic pulled off a brilliant save at the other end to deny Joao Felix but he could not stop Suarez scoring the winner after a foul by Anaitz Arbilla.

The former FC Barcelona striker netted his 11th goal of the season from the penalty kick spot to win it for the capital club.

The goal took him level with former teammate Lionel Messi as the division’s top scorer.

Atletico Madrid signed Suarez cheaply from FC Barcelona in the summer with the Catalans keen to clear the 33-year-old’s salary off their wage bill.

But now he is leading the Rojiblancos in the direction of their first league title since 2014.

“He’s an extraordinary player and we are very happy that we have him with us,” said Simeone.

“He was active throughout. He found the goal after a loss of the ball and later for the penalty kick he generated it, made it, looked for it and finished it decisively.”

Earlier Valencia, 14th, drew 1-1 with Osasuna, who are 19th and two points from safety.

Jonathan Calleri sent the visitors ahead at Mestalla but Unai Garcia’s second half own-goal levelled the score, with the defender deflecting Yunus Musah’s cross-shot into his own net.

Atletico Madrid stay top of La Liga with Suarez double

Atletico Madrid went three points clear at the top of the Spanish La Liga table with two games in hand following victory over Elche.

Ex-Liverpool and Barcelona forward Luis Suarez slotted in England international Kieran Trippier’s cross in the 41st minute to put Atletico ahead.

Yannick Carrasco then set up Suarez for his second after the break, shortly before Lucas Boyle scored for Elche.

Substitute Diego Costa scored a penalty late on to make it 3-1 to Atletico.

Atletico had several chances in the first half – midfielder Marcos Llorente coming close following an excellent pass from Joao Felix.

Victory takes Atletico three points ahead of Real Madrid and Real Sociedad, while Barcelona, who play Valencia at home later on Saturday, trail by nine points.

Suarez, making his 200th La Liga appearance, has now scored seven goals in nine league appearances for Atletico this season.

  • Suarez reveals one thing that will keep Messi at Barca

Lionel Messi can be convinced to stay at FC Barcelona beyond this season, in spite of interest from Manchester City, his former team mate Luis Suarez says.

The Barca captain tried to force his way out of the club in the close season, but he later agreed to stay until his contract ends in June 2021.

The 33-year-old Argentina forward revealed his frustrations with the club’s board and a lack of planning, but said he would give his all this season.

Messi, FC Barcelona’s all-time top goalscorer, is free to negotiate with other clubs from January, including Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who are interested in luring him to Manchester.

“Maybe there’s the possibility of him playing for another club, but if he feels comfortable and happy, and a new board comes in, he will want to stay at the club,” Atletico Madrid striker Suarez said.

“As a friend, I will be happy if things go well for him (at Barca), but also if he goes to another club.”

FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has called club elections for March 2021.

But he could be forced out sooner, with a no confidence vote set to be launched against him and the board.

Messi will have no shortage of suitors if he decides to leave Camp Nou.

Manchester City’s chief operating officer Omar Berrada left the door open for the striker in an interview.

“It’s almost impossible to guess what will happen next summer,” said Berrada.

“Messi is a generational talent. He’s the best player in the world and probably an exception to potential investments that we’d do out of the ordinary.

“For every single position we have to be prepared, because there are so many things that can happen.

”But at the same time I think we have the financial strength and ability to make that investment (for a striker), when required.”

Messi renews Barca war over Saurez exit

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has fired a new barb at the board this morning over Luis Suarez’s departure.

The striker gave his farewell media conference yesterday ahead of joining Atletico Madrid.

In a social media post today, Messi declared: “I had already begun to imagine it but today I went into the dressing room and it truly dawned on me. It’s going to be so difficult to not continue to share every day with you both on the pitches and away from them.

“We’re going to miss you so much. We spent many years together, many lunches and many dinners. So many things we will never forget, all the time we spent together.

“It will be strange to see you in another shirt and much more to come up against you on the pitch. You deserved a farewell that fit with who you are: one of the most important players in the history of the club. Someone who achieved great things for the team and on an individual level.

“You did not deserve for them to throw you out like they did. But the truth is that at this stage nothing surprises me anymore.”

Barca coach Koeman sees Depay as Suarez replacement

Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman is lining up a move for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay.

RAC1 says Koeman sees Depay as a striker and plans to replace Luis Suarez with the Holland international.

Indeed, Koeman is arguing Depay would be a more affordable attacking signing than Inter Milan ace Lautaro Martinez.

Depay has a deal with Lyon to 2021 and Barca rate the former Manchester United winger at €40m.

Along with Depay, Koeman is also keen on fellow Dutchman Donny van de Beek, of Ajax.

  • Suarez tells Lautaro to reject Barcelona

Suarez tells Lautaro to reject Barcelona

Inter Milan great Luis Suarez says Lautaro Martinez should consider turning down Barcelona.

Luisito, also a former Barca star, believes Lautaro can grow with the Nerazzurri.

He told TMW, “Barcelona are stronger than Inter but everything depends on the intentions and thoughts of the Argentine. He can help Inter get bigger and here he is practically certain of a place and has everyone’s trust in him.

“In my opinion Lautaro must play in order to make another leap in quality to become a great player. At Inter he can make that further leap in quality.

“He is still young and if in two years time he wants a change of scenery then it will be another matter. It is clear that Barcelona is tempting to everyone but he can play and perform consistently at Inter.”
