Transfer news: Arsenal close to signing Barca’s Suarez on loan

Arsenal are close to completing the signing of Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez.

The Spaniard, 25, will join the Gunners on loan until the end of the season, with a purchase option in the summer.

Suarez has played 71 times for Barcelona since joining in 2013 but has only featured eight times this season.

He previously played under Gunners manager Unai Emery during a loan spell at Sevilla when Emery was in charge of the La Liga side.

On Tuesday, Barcelona announced Suarez would not be in their squad for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg against Sevilla while the player “looks to resolve his future”.

Reports in Spain suggest that, as a compromise, Suarez agreed to extend his current contract – which expires in June 2020 – in order to protect his value to Barcelona and encourage them to allow him to move to the Emirates Stadium.

  • Suarez strikes late as Barca snatch victory at Rayo Vallecano

Late goals from Ousmane Dembele and Luis Suarez earned La Liga champions FC Barcelona a 3-2 win at struggling Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

The victory helped to keep them clear at the top of the standings.

Suarez slotted in a cross from Jordi Alba from close range to give Barca a deserved lead in the 11th minute.

That was after they had made a flying start at a ground where they had eased to victory in their previous five visits and had not lost since 2002.

But Rayo, 19th in the table and with only one win all season, fought their way back into the game and midfielder Jose Pozo smashed an equaliser in off the post in the 35th minute.

Rayo winger Alvaro Garcia sent the raucous home fans into delirium early in the second half by stabbing his side in front on the rebound.

Striker Raul de Thomas had struck the post with a diving header.

Barca might have had a sense of deja vu from their shock 2-1 defeat in Madrid by Leganes two months ago in which they also threw away the lead.

The Catalans adopted no nonsense tactics to get back into the game, throwing defender Gerard Pique up front and playing frequent high balls into the box.

Substitute Dembele got Barca out of trouble with a perfectly struck half volley in the 87th minute after a knockdown by Pique.

Suarez, who scored a hat-trick in last week’s drubbing of Real Madrid, completed the comeback three minutes later.

He arrived at the far post to steer in a cross from Sergi Roberto, striking a fifth goal in two games and a ninth in total to move top of the league’s scoring charts.

Ernesto Valverde’s side lead La Liga with 24 points, four ahead of Atletico Madrid.

Alaves can move within one point if they beat Eibar on Sunday.

  • La Liga: Suarez scores hat-trick as Barca thrash Madrid in El Clasico

Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick as Barcelona outclassed Real Madrid to seal a stylish El Clasico victory that further damages their bitter rivals and Madrid’s stricken manager Julen Lopetegui.

The former Spain boss now seems certain to lose his job in the wake of a humiliating defeat in a match crucial to his chances of survival.
His side conjured something of a revival in the second half but ultimately they were sunk by an irresistible Barca performance, and it now appears only a question of when he will be fired.
Philippe Coutinho slotted in and Suarez converted a penalty, awarded by a video assistant referee decision for Raphael Varane’s foul on the Uruguayan, for Barca’s half-time advantage.
Marcelo chested down and finished to give Real hope, but Suarez’s header and chipped finish, followed by Arturo Vidal’s header, completed the rout.
The visitors had begun the day within four points of Barca, but now trail them by seven and find themselves ninth in the table after 10 matches.
Ernesto Valverde’s side, winners of seven league titles from the past 10, are top of the league, leading Atletico Madrid by two points.

  • Sevilla 0 Barcelona 5: Suarez and Messi lead crushing Copa final win

Barcelona have won their first trophy of the season, after they crushed Sevilla 5-0 in the Copa del Rey.

The Catalans saw their hopes of a Treble extinguished, after they were dumped out of the Champions League, following an incredible Roma comeback in Italy.

However, Ernesto Valverde has landed his first piece of silverware in charge of the LaLiga leaders.

Luis Suarez’s brace and Lionel Messi’s goal put Barca 3-0 up and in complete command of the game.

Andres Iniesta added a fourth, finishing off a lovely team move, before Phillipe Coutinho converted a penalty.

Messi and co are also three points away from clinching the LaLiga title.

  • Messi set Liga record, Suárez fired hat-trick as Barcelona beat Girona 6-1

Messi set Liga record, Suárez fired hat-trick as Barcelona beat Girona 6-1

Lionel Messi scored against the 36th different team he has faced in La Liga on Saturday to break the league record, while Barcelona also set a new club unbeaten league run as they beat Girona 6-1.

By scoring in the first half, Messi broke the record he shared with Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz.

Messi has found the net against all but three of the clubs he has faced in La Liga — only coming up empty against Cadiz (now in the second division), Real Murcia (now third division) and Xerez (now fourth division).

Before scoring himself, Lionel Messi played a through ball to Luis Suarez to net an equaliser for Barcelona for what was the Argentine star’s 148th career assist in La Liga.

The league tweeted that Messi’s assist set an all-time record for a player in the Primera Division, though that could not be confirmed with available data. Spanish news outlet Sport reported last week that Messi had been level with former Real Madrid player Michel on 147 career assists.

Messi also added another goal — under the wall from a free kick — to move into the lead among Europe’s top five leagues for the most combined goals and assists this season. His 22 goals in La Liga lead the league.

The game marked the 130th time that Messi has scored at home in La Liga — of those, Barcelona have lost only twice.

The victory also allowed Barcelona to break the club milestone for longest unbeaten run in La Liga that had stood at 31 games since the 2010-11 season, under former coach Pep Guardiola.

Barcelona have now gone 32 league games without a loss, after going undefeated through all 25 rounds this season under Ernesto Valverde, plus the last seven from the previous campaign under Luis Enrique.

Real Sociedad still own the record of 38 games without a loss in La Liga, set in 1979-80.

  • La Liga: Messi, Suarez lead Barca’s 5-0 romp at Real Betis

FC Barcelona rode further away from their crumbling title rivals on Sunday as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez scored twice each in a 5-0 thrashing of Real Betis.

The emphatic win opened up an 11-point gap at the top of the La Liga standings.

A strike from Ivan Rakitic broke the home side’s resistance in the 58th minute.

Top goalscorer Messi and the in-form Suarez took turns in adding to the scoring to cap a sixth successive league win for Ernesto Valverde’s imperious team.

Barca, the only unbeaten side in Europe’s top five leagues, lead the way with 54 points.

This was after capitalising on second-placed Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Girona on Saturday and third-placed Valencia’s 2-1 defeat at Las Palmas.

Betis went into the game having scored eight goals in their last two league matches but had few opportunities against Barca.

The league leaders turned on the style in the second half as they have done so often in this dominant campaign.

It took a clever rolled pass from Suarez to release Rakitic for the opening goal, which the Croatian dispatched confidently.

Messi then took full advantage of a slack Betis offside trap to slot the second.

The Argentine’s second strike moved him on to 19 league goals while Suarez’s brace took him to 15, 10 of them coming in his last seven La Liga games.

  • Suarez inspires stunning FC Barcelona comeback at Real Sociedad

Luis Suarez inspired a spectacular FC Barcelona comeback on Sunday to help the Spanish La Liga leaders return from two goals down to beat Real Sociedad 4-2 at Anoeta on Sunday.

Willian Jose sent the hosts ahead in the 11th minute and Juanmi added a second goal in the 34th at a ground where FC Barcelona had not won in the La Liga since 2007.

However Suarez set up Paulinho to pull one back before half-time, before scoring twice himself.

Lionel Messi added some gloss with a perfectly-placed free kick for FC Barcelona’s fourth goal in the 85th minute to end a thrilling game in spectacular fashion.

The victory ensured FC Barcelona remained unbeaten and and stayed nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid at the top of the table at the halfway stage of the season.

  • Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid : Last minute Sergio Ramos header stops Barcelona’s win

Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid : Last minute Sergio Ramos header stops Barcelona’s win

Sergio Ramos scored late on as Real Madrid snatched a point in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Clasico on Saturday.

The Blaugrana took the lead thanks to a second-half header from Luis Suarez, but Neymar should have made it 2-0 moments later as he guided an effort over the crossbar from close range.

Cristiano Ronaldo passed up a great chance as Barca, who welcomed back captain Andres Iniesta from injury, thought they were set to close the gap on their rivals to three points in the Liga table.

But Ramos popped up late on with a header to deny Barca victory at Camp Nou.
