S/Sudan president Kiir grants amnesty to rebel leader Machar, others
President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has granted an amnesty to all those involved
in the nation’s civil war including rebel leader Riek Machar, according to a television broadcast. On Sunday Kiir, SPLM-IO leader Machar – the president’s former deputy – and other groups signed a ceasefire
and power-sharing agreement in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. The amnesty order was read out on state-run television late Wednesday.
A political row between Kiir and Machar degenerated in 2013 into a war that has killed tens of thousands,
forced a quarter of the population to flee their homes and wrecked the country’s oil-dependent economy. The conflict has often been fought along ethnic lines. Previous peace deals have failed, including one
in 2015 that briefly halted hostilities but fell apart after Machar returned to the capital Juba in
2016.SPLM-IO is the largest of the rebel groups fighting Kiir’s government, and fighters allied to it control
several areas close to the capital. Some of its generals broke off to form their own movements or to join Kiir’s government, and other
anti-government groups have also emerged since the conflict erupted, some of which have
fought against each other. -

South Sudan hail border trade resumption with Sudan
South Sudan said on Thursday that the reopening of the border with its northern neighbour Sudan would spur hitherto stalled trade between the two countries.
Chairperson of the South Sudan Business Union, Duang Ayii, told journalists in Juba.
Ayii said the reopening of the border after a seven-year closure would help South Sudan’s battered economy, which has been suffering from more than four years of conflict.
“What we had been requesting all the time from the two presidents is finally implemented and borders are now open, even the goods which were not allowed to come will be allowed now to come freely,” Ayii.
Sudan on Monday announced the opening of the border between its White Nile province and South Sudan’s Upper Nile region.
Sudan’s Trade Minister, Hatem Elsir said the reopening of the border would be one of the mechanisms to limit the smuggling of commodities; a development analysts say could ease economic troubles in both countries.
South Sudan President, Salva Kiir and his Sudanese counterpart, Omar Al-Bashir, met in October 2017 in Khartoum and agreed to expedite implementation of the cooperation agreement signed in 2012 that covered security, trade and oil issues.
They also agreed to establish customs and migration offices in the 11 crossing points between the two countries.
South Sudan descended into violence in December 2013, after political dispute between President Salva Kiir and his former Deputy Riek Machar led to fighting that pitted mostly Dinka ethnic soldiers loyal to Kiir against Machar’s Nuer ethnic group.
The 2015 peace agreement to end the violence was again violated in July 2016 when the rival factions resumed fighting in the capital forcing Machar to flee into exile.
The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions that have sought refuge in neighbouring countries.

CHAN 2018: Nigeria beat Sudan, to meet Morocco in final on Sunday
Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Wednesday beat Sudan 1-0 at Marrakech in Morocco to advance to their first-ever final match appearance at the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
An early goal by Okechukwu Gabriel helped the home-based Eagles secure a spot in the final.
There, they will meet hosts Atlas Lions of Morocco on Sunday.
As early as the 12th minute, the Super Eagles were dealt a huge blow when goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa sustained an injury, forcing him to be replaced by Dele Ajiboye.
Three minutes later, Sudan had a glorious opportunity to grab the lead, but Ajiboye was quick to read the danger and put it under check.
However, it was Nigeria who found the back of the net a minute later when Gabriel beat Elhadi Akram from close range with a low shot.
In the 25th minute, Gabriel came close to bagging his brace when his left-footed shot sailed inches wide of Akram’s left corner.
In spite of good moves and dominance by the Falcons of Jediane in the dying stages of the half, it was 1-0 at halftime for Salisu Yusuf’s men.
Nigeria looked threatening in the second half, but they were soon slowed down when Ifeanyi Ifeanyi was sent off in the 58th minute after a dangerous tackle.
Coach Zdravko Logarusic’s men would take advantage of the situation to dictate the pace, and Osman Ismaeil saw his powerful shot going wide, with Ajiboye a spectator.
With three minutes to go, Sudan were also reduced to 10 men when Bakri Bachir received a red card for bringing down Solomon Ojo.
Ajiboye however kept the Nigerian team in the lead after producing two brilliant saves in the 90th minute to ensure they are through to the final.
The defeat for the Sudanese means they will meet the Mediterranean Knights of Libya in the third-place play-off on Saturday.

Trump bans entry of citizens from Syria, Iraq, Iran, others into US
…orders Mexican border barricade
President Donald Trump has ordered a temporary ban of nationals from war troubled Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen pending the review of the vetting processes.
The president also ordered the erection of a wall along the US-Mexico border beginning from Wednesday (today).
He said this on Tuesday as he unveiled his actions on border and national security.
He has indicated temporary ban on immigration from Muslim countries deemed a ‘threat to national security’.
Trump will also sign other domestic immigration enforcement measures that will include targeting sanctuary cities that decline to prosecute undocumented aliens.
The president posted a tweet on Tuesday evening signaling that major announcements were in the offing.
‘Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow (Wenesday)’, Trump tweeted.
‘Among many other things, we will build the wall!’
The new Trump directives will also stop most refugees including those from Syria coming to America while vetting processes are reviewed.
The one exception is religious minorities fleeing persecution – which would apply to Christians fleeing Syria and other Muslim majority countries.
In total the six immediate actions are as follows: Release of funds toward the construction of a wall along the southern border; Target so-called ‘sanctuary’ cities that decline to prosecute undocumented aliens; Institute a four-month freeze on admission of all refugees.
Others are Temporarily ban nationals from Muslim-majority countries that are ‘terror prone’; Halt visas to people from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen; Grant exceptions to Christians and other minorities fleeing Muslim persecution.
