The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture is entitled: “Can Two Work Together Except They Agree? – A Psychological Perspective of a Journey of a Helping Relationship and Change”.

The WHO says, “Depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide.

More than 300 million people are now living with depression, an increase of more than 18 per cent between 2005 and 2015.

Lack of support for people with mental disorders, coupled with a fear of stigma, prevents many from accessing the treatment they need to live healthy and productive lives.’’

Alao said, “The most prevailing causes of suicide are relationship problems, loss of a close relation, mental disorder and family problems.

He said that there was need to strengthen the family because of its pertinent role in addressing the increasing cases of suicide.

The psychologist advised people passing through depression not to consider suicide as the next option, saying that ending one’s life was not the solution.

He appealed to the Federal Government to intensify efforts in improving the living standard of the citizens.

Alao said that people’s psychological stability would be stable when their basic needs were provided by the government.

He also called for adequate demographic variables on suicide victims for easy monitoring of the trend.

Just in: Boko Haram used 117 children as suicide bombers

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said terrorist group, Boko Haram has used 117 children for suicide attacks in Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon since 2014.

In a statement on Wednesday, UNICEF said 27 children had been sent on suicide missions in 2017 alone.

UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Marie-Pierre Poirier, said, “In the first three months of 2017, the number of children used in bomb attacks is nearly the same as the whole of last year. This is the worst possible use of children in conflict. These children are victims, not perpetrators. Forcing or deceiving them into committing such horrific acts is reprehensible.”

The statement also said over 1.3 million children have been displaced by the insurgency in the four countries.

The statement reads in part: “So far, 117 children have been used to carry out bomb attacks in public places across Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon since 2014.

“We had four in 2014, 56 in 2015, 30 in 2016 and 27 only in the first three months of 2017.

“Girls have been used in the vast majority of these attacks. As a consequence, girls, boys and even infants have been viewed with increasing fear at markets and checkpoints, where they are thought to carry explosives.

“The alarming increase reflects the tactic of the insurgents. We call on parties to the conflict to end grave violations against children by Boko Haram and move children from military to civilian environment as quickly as possible.

“Children who have been taken into custody solely for their alleged or actual association to armed groups should be immediately handed over to civilian authorities for reintegration and support.”

  • I have tried to commit suicide in the past- Adunni Ade

I have tried to commit suicide in the past- Adunni Ade

Beautiful actress and mother of two, Adunni Ade is one of the rising stars in Nollywood. When you meet Adunni you cannot ignore her beauty, charm and confidence. Unknown to many, there was a time she wanted to committed suicide. The single mother of one made this known in a recent interview with Motherhood Instyle Magazine.

According to her: “I think the major thing that got me through was the fear that somebody else would raise my children if I sat in that relationship, that was the scariest thing for me, that my kids would see somebody else as their mother. Depression is no joke. A lot of people in this country, Nigeria, don’t want to admit that depression is an illness. People don’t know the extent to which it affects the mind. Not a lot of people know this; in the past I have tried to commit suicide because it was just too much, just too much for me but I guess God loves me enough to still keep me here.”

When asked how she has been able to cope despite being a single mother , she said:”Well, even before I moved back I definitely didn’t like placing myself in that ‘single mother’ status. I’m a parent. Yes, it takes two to become a parent but hey, when it’s one, let that one do the best they can. Now, how I have been able to cope in Nigeria?

“The same way I was able to cope in the States, doing it all by myself. I am truly happy that I experienced certain things over there in the States. If I had experienced those things here in Nigeria, I probably would have just killed myself long time ago because this country is tough. But as tough as this country and its people are, I’m also a tough cookie and I never give up. If I set my mind to do something, regardless of what it is, I will get it done.

She also opened up on why she is not married to the father of her children. “Well, I just had to make that decision though it took me a long time to realize or stop lying to myself that it was never going to work out even though I tried as much as I could. I just decided that what’s best for me is to walk away and still be here and be with my kids and still have the opportunity of being the best mother possible, so yeah, I had to make that decision”.
