  • Suicide: Women and Their killer Tongues – By Michael West

    By Michael West

Most of the time, I appreciate men that stay married over the years not because they are better than their peers who have lost their homes to separation or divorce but because they are able to endure acidic tongues of their wives in moments of anger. Women are not known to be pugilistic like men but their incisive, prickly and razor blade-tongues are deadlier and injurious than ballistic missiles.

Many women do display their rich vocabulary and wordsmith skills when they engage in disputes. They become finely articulate, giving precise and commensurate responses to every dart of words haul at them. It is at these maddening moments that they show their sense of history by recapitulating details of long forgotten issues, refreshing old wounds and adding insults upon injuries to their opponents.

Experiences have shown that men do endure and sulk their wives’ diatribes and punchy utterances than their fellow women. While men of short fuse could resort to physical assaults as responses to unbearable vituperations, women could challenge their folks to physical combats or resort to emotional diarrhea like weeping, vandalisation of their abusers’ belongings or contemplate inflicting injury on themselves instead. In extreme cases, suicide could be an option. The latter was allegedly claimed to be what happened to late Folake Abiola, a telecommunications company’s employee who reportedly committed suicide penultimate weekend.

Women are the worst enemies of themselves. If women should love themselves or decide to operate in solidarity, they will rule the world. women, being the highest adult population worldwide, (about four billion to be precise) should be able to determine and influence critical decisions and appointments both in elective or appointive capacities through their voting power. Nay, they’re not united to forge common fronts in any society except when they agitate or clamour for their rights, family or conjugal support, fight against rape, campaign against gender violence and mobilise against various abuses etc. Women hit their folks harder when they quarrel. The Word says life and death is in the power of the tongue, (Proverbs 18:21). Women ‘kill’ more with their tongues than with lethal weapons. The same destructive power of the tongue in writing was alleged to have made Folake to commit a suicide.

The WhatsApp chat that allegedly instigated her suicide was reportedly found on her phone. It is believed that she had a quarrel with a woman who, probably in exchange of angry chats, sent an abusive and emotionally traumatic chat in which the woman bluntly taunted her with her challenges as an unmarried and childless woman at her age.

Below is the chat which I copied verbatim. I didn’t tamper with the content despite many grammatical  mistakes in it. The raw chat reads:

“I don’t hate on a barren at 47, I pray for them. Nature is already dealing with you and you can’t see, sorry your life is delayed! At your age, no child, no man to call your own and menopause has set in so I can understand your frustration. By the way, I’m busy paying university fees and tomorrow is PTA meeting (you can’t say this about yourself). The next time you want to run your mouth look for your mates aka your fellow barrens. Mothers are very busy people. When you meet responsible mothers like me, ask how much a Montessori fees cost and see how useless you are as a woman to the society. Enjoy my hotel in Cannes. Help me tell your boss, oh sorry, my Ex. Please if you don’t want to hear certain things don’t go looking for a mad woman’s trouble. I won’t call you mother of twins if you are a barren. Period!”

A report by the RAND Corporation, an American research organization, found that as many as 13.1% of men and 12.4% of women experienced verbal abuse regularly at work. While in India for example, there had been 760 percent increase in abuse rate from 1971 to 2009. The research also showed that the most common type of abuse reported is verbal abuse which is 52.3 percent.

According to a clinical research, emotional abuse is linked to thinning of certain areas of the brain that help you manage emotions and be self-aware — especially the prefrontal cortex and temporal lobe. Epigenetic changes and depression. Research from 2018 has connected childhood abuse to epigenetic brain changes that may cause depression.

Emotional or verbal abuse can take the form of name calling, demeaning utterances, written toxic expressions, or any behaviour that makes a person feel belittled, ridiculed or worthless. In some cases, abused persons may start to believe that they are ugly or unwanted, or that they cannot “do better” than their peers, acquaintances or partners. They often lose self-esteem and confidence. Gradually, they begin to feel less and inadequate to measure up to the standards and expectations of their abusers and that of the society. They are emotionally blackmailed into submission and psychologically conditioned to feel like failures.

Verbal abuse is so destructive such that it has sent some people into early graves through depression and suicide. Although the police is said to be on the trail of the woman whose chat allegedly instigated Folake’s suicide, the fact remains that she cannot be brought back to life again. All hope is lost on her.

Whether it was the chat that actually led her to suicide or not, it is instructive to admit that life is a treasure that cannot be replaced. Suicide will never placate or sufficiently atone for challenges we face in life. We have to embrace the fact that troubles ferried into our spaces are part of what makes life worth living. The sweetness of victory after vicissitudes of life underscores the reality that life is worth fighting for.

It is not a matter of religion when advised to trust in God and employ the power of prayer to confront challenging and unpleasant situations. God never promised anyone a crisis-free life but He said in whatever situation we may find ourselves, He promised us two things: 1). He will be there with us in our trials and problems  (Isaiah 43:2); and, 2). His grace to go through the storm will be available for us (2 Corinthians 12:9). Armed with these unfailing promises of God, regardless of what anybody may do or say to us, our song should be that “we are more than conquerors through Christ that loves us” (Romans 8:37). We need to keep hope alive. Without hope for a better tomorrow, life will lose its glamour and become meaningless which are the potent ingredients of suicide. Let nobody else consider suicide as an option again. There’s no rest hereafter for whoever commits suicide. Women should please tame their tongues in moments of anger. It is a condemnable act that someone’s utterances or written angry words are the reason somebody commits suicide. A murder charge is awaiting such a person if not here but certainly yonder.

I want to sincerely appeal to our women to please learn how to employ the power of their sharp tongues positively to bless, advise and correct others and not to send weak and soft-hearted people to their graves.

Do have a pleasant weekend ahead.

  • Despair: Suicide, Never an Option! – By Michael West

The shocking news of a suicide reportedly committed by a telecommunications company’s employee, Folake Abiola, an accountant, last weekend, shook the news media space. Largely described as a good woman, unmarried and an active church worker, Folake painfully ended her life abruptly.

Several issues have so far been speculated as likely causes of her action but since she’s no more to tell us exactly why she did it, let’s leave out the speculations. However, what is glaring is that she was troubled. She kept her pains to herself until it snowballed into a mental health issue which eventually led to suicide. For those who may care to know, depression is a common mental disorder.

In February 8, 2020 edition of this column, headlined: “Heartbreak: Suicide, Never an Option,” I addressed the issue with real life encounters. In fact, the woman I counselled against suicide who was jobless, frustrated and depressed at the time is now a lecturer in a state university.

Because of the relevance of the article to the issue at stake, and for the benefit of those who have not read it, I hereby present a part of the February 8, 2020 article. Read on:

A number of people have expressed despair about life generally, while two of them confided in me about their plans to end their lives gruesomely and prematurely through suicide. January 4, 2020 precisely, God ‘arrested’ a woman on her way to drown herself in an undisclosed river. “I was in a public vehicle to the river to drown myself when suddenly I saw a man with a flaming sword waiting at the bank of the river. I could hear him loud and clear while still in the bus. He told me to go back otherwise he would cut me into pieces. That’s how I alighted from the bus about two kilometers to the river and I came back home.”

January 23, 2020, I had a late night WhatsApp chats and later a call with another woman and a friend who had made up her mind to end her life in a matter of days. I decided to publish our chats here because of several others who are still mooting such an evil idea in their minds. Please read and share this article as a way of stopping the needless cases of suicide. Our chats:

    “Good evening, sir.”

‘Evening my dear. How are you doing?’

    “I’m fine, sir. And you?”

‘All glory to God, I dey kampe.’

    “Thank God”

‘Are you into another relationship now?’

    “I’m yet to”

    ‘How about your job?’

    “I’ve not got anything serious”

    ‘Why?’

“But nothing interests me anymore. I want to go”

    ‘Go to where?’

    “My Maker”

    ‘By what means?’

    “Never mind”

‘You should talk to me. Are we no longer friends? I want to invite you for a talk’

“That’s nice. Anyway, I just want to tell you, sir, not to bother about me again. The game is almost over. I will soon go. I don’t want it to come to you as a rude shock. It is well with my soul.”

‘Are you saying you want to end it all by committing suicide?’

    (No response – Silence)

    ‘Are you still there?’

    “Yes, sir”

    ‘Answer me now’

    “Absolutely”

‘You don’t mean it. You want to commit suicide and throw your parents into mourning at old-age? You want to commit suicide and leave your three beautiful children to suffer? You want to commit suicide so you go into eternal condemnation in hell for committing murder? Who said your soul will go into eternal rest or peace if you kill yourself? How will your untimely death be the solution to your problems? Already your straying husband is dating another woman, enjoying himself as if he’s never been married. Is death your only response to his action for deserting you and your children even when you are not at fault?

‘Have you forgotten the saying that: “when there’s life, there’s hope”? Let me assure you, my dear, nobody has ever committed suicide without regretting it yonder. God doesn’t accept sorry or repentance in hell. While you are alive, you can make peace with God, your Maker. You have ample opportunities to repent and restitute your ways before death. There’s no room for repentance inside the grave.

‘All the prayers and wishful expressions people make for the dead have no impact or relevance in the deceased’s eternal destination. You can’t pray for the dead and the dead can’t pray for you either. Prayers for the dead are mere religious rites that are of no effect on the departed. The only prayers that are very meaningful and effectual at funerals are those offered for the friends, family members of the deceased and the other mourners. Sermons at funerals are meant for the living while the entire burial ceremony is just a reminder to everybody that it will be an individual’s turn someday.

‘Therefore, think deeply about your decision to end your life prematurely and unceremoniously. Think about the negative news report the incident will generate in the media. Think about the image, embarrassment and grief your death will bring to your family and children. If after your death Nigeria becomes a haven of opportunities, do you think there’s a way you will benefit from it? How will you feel, if God permits you to look back in torment of hell and see your children attaining greatness and success when you should still be alive to reap the fruits of your labour?

‘If because you are no more, (God forbid) your children become deprived, molested, oppressed and enslaved by other women, strangers or callous people, how will you feel if you are allowed to see their condition from the pit of hell? Lastly, how will you feel, if you look back and see your husband, despite his wayward lifestyle, later repents and make it to heaven while you languish in eternal abyss whereas you are in hell because of his bad behaviours?

‘Jesus the Lord says that what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul; or what will he use in exchange of his soul? The simple understanding of this profound statement is that the entire American dollars ever printed plus the whole British pound sterling including the choicest mansions and the best of cars, yachts and jets put together are not worth the value of one soul in the sight of God. The spirit in you that makes you a living soul is that of God and not your own. Therefore, forceful termination of life is a grave offence punishable by eternal condemnation in the pit of hell where God does not answer prayers or accept apologies for any wrong doing. Think about these things and make your choice.’

    “Hmmmmmm”

    ‘Hello’

    “Hi, sir”

‘What’s your response to what I have stated?’

    “Thank you, sir. I’m grateful”

‘You’re welcome. Are you still going ahead on your suicide mission?’

    “Hmmmm. I don’t think so”

    ‘Meaning?’

“I have changed my decision, sir. I will give life a little more push (weeps)”

    ‘Really?’

    “(She sobs) Yes, sir”

‘You’re not a mistake. God created you and everyone else purposefully. Be positive about life. Stop searching for who will bear your burden with you. Whoever God has ordained for you will certainly locate you. Get your acts together, pray the more, double your efforts at engaging yourself in productive ventures, and be positive about life and about yourself. Make yourself happy, my dear. By this time next year, your life will be a testimony of a great turnaround!’

“Amen, sir. Thank you. Good night (weeps)”

In conclusion, regardless of what life may throw at us, courage, patience, unrelenting efforts, prayers and faith in God for a better tomorrow will sustain us. Vicissitudes of life present diverse people with diverse problems; and solutions will come in diverse ways also. The greatest treasure God gave to mankind is life, and whoever terminates his/her own has committed an unforgivable sin and the judgment of God awaits the person hereafter. Therefore be strong, courageous and hopeful. Your tomorrow is great and God will see you through. Amen!

An Indian expatriate working in Nigeria Devendra Singh, has reportedly committed suicide at his private office on Egbeyemi Street, Ilupeju Lagos State.

Singh who was aged 42 was a field worker with the Agro Nigeria Limited in the Ikeja area of the state.

It was gathered that Singh was driven to his office by his driver and was later discovered he had committed suicide by hanging himself.

The driver said that the Indian expatriate got to his office apartment to proceed with the day’s job but didn’t come out alive.

The discovery was made when Singh’s driver waited for him to take him home after closing hours but could’t find him.

His driver was said to have called his phone number several times without any response.

A source, on Sunday, said the driver, who peeped through the window, was shocked at the sight of the lifeless remains of his boss dangling from a rope.

A source hinted that “The driver called his colleagues around 7.30pm saying he brought his boss to the office in the morning and that his boss was not out and that he had tried calling him and he did not pick his calls. His colleagues then informed their company’s chief security officer.

Chinmark Ponzi scheme: Female Investor commits suicide after losing millions of naira

An investor with the crashed Ponzi scheme Chinmark known as Mrs Nuella has committed suicide after lapsing into depression due to millions of naira invested in the scheme.

It was gathered that many people who had invested millions of Naira in the scheme already threatened suicide when the CEO of the project Chinedu Ijeomah disappeared after the ponzi scheme had crashed.

Findings have shown that Mrs Nuella had invested millions of Naira without the consent of her hubby hoping to make double of her returns when the project crashed already hinted on committing suicide.

She was, however, later rescued and taken to the hospital, with Mr. Charles Awuzie, with a verified Facebook account posting her account details and soliciting assistance for her.

Mrs Nuella finally gave up the ghost after spending days at the hospital trying to recuperate.

A close friend, Awuzie of the deceased on Monday night wrote a farewell note on her facebook page.

Awuzie wrote: “Nuella – the lady who invested her family’s money with you and attempted suicide last month because of you..

”Well, she couldn’t handle the disappointment and she left the world today.

”I did my best to avoid a possible Chinmark bloodshed…

”I was called names, defamed and dragged for trying to stop bloodshed… The court and the blood of those I tried to save will vindicate me at the right time.

”As I type this, there are more women in my inbox telling me that they may not make it…

”You have drank the blood of the poor.

”I didn’t know much about her until I learnt about her attempted suicide… She was so selfless that she wanted to give my gift to her to Chinmark victims who are in more need. It was because of her that I squeezed out more funds to support pregnant victims. No woman has challenged my conscience like Nuella did in the few moments I engaged with her.

”Chinmark, you have caused an irredeemable loss.

””But this is the end of Ponzi schemes in Nigeria.

At this point, we will activate every tool available to us to bring those who killed Nuella to justice.

    ”Hashtag – #Justice4Nuella #ShutdownPonzi #ShutdownRedKillers

”Rest in Peace Nuella. There will be no peace for those who killed you.” He wrote

Many investors of the Ponzi scheme have flooded the Enugu office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) to make complains about the crashed scheme.

As at the time of filing this report EFCC is yet to comment or take any action on arresting the CEO of the project Chinedu Ijeoma who is not at large.

Recall that a major ponzi scheme known as MMM in operations about 5 years ago also crashed leaving so many investors biting their fingers after losing investments worth millions of Naira.
