Sanwo-Olu rescues man from suicide attempt on Third Mainland Bridge

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, rescued a man who wanted to commit suicide because he has a debt of N500,000.

The governor made this known while speaking to journalists after he visited the Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Broad Street and some other hospitals in different parts of the State, to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir with in-patients and health practitioners.

Speaking on his response to a recent viral video of a boy begging his mother to calm down while punishing him for an offense he committed, Governor Sanwo-Olu said he believes strongly in paying attention and creating time to little things because there might be somebody somewhere who needs a help.

He said: “You look at big things but you need to certainly create time for little things as well. That is the difference. You know, you are going to build a bridge and it is nice but you have somebody who is just somewhere who needs a help.

“Just this morning (Friday), we rescued somebody who was planning to jump at the Third Mainland Bridge all because he said he has a debt of N500,000. We had to rescue him and we paid the debt. Those little details are what make the difference.

“I don’t have two heads, I don’t have 15 fingers. We are still same human beings. So, we need to show that human part of us while we are not losing sight of the big picture. The big picture is that we want to build roads, bridges and new schools. But we also need to pay attention to little one like the young boy on that video. By the way, I have spoken to him and his mother. They are doing great and I will see him one of these days very soon.”

Why I attempted suicide multiple times – Ubi Franklin

Popular record label boss, Ubi Franklihas revealed he attempted suicide multiple times three years ago.

Franklin made this known in a series of tweet via his Twitter account on Wednesday while reacting to the distressing video of Izuchukwu Madubueze reading his suicide note before shooting himself dead.

According to him, online bullying made him to be depressed.

In his words: “I watched this video of IZU reading out his suicide note before he took his life and i remembered doing this several times 3 years ago unsuccessfully and I am here today.

“I got bullied so much on Instagram in the last two years that I started getting depressed again and this time I told myself “Ubi” who are these people talking about you? Do you know them or their families?

“Everyone has something they are hiding and won’t tell the public but go on social media to bully others of things that they also have done or their parents have or their brothers, sisters and friends have done.

“Why bother yourself with people who contribute nothing to your life? Are you the first to have a failed marriage?

“So I started using my platform to speak against the mistakes I have made in life that I feel can be avoided by someone watching my lives or reading about how I have turned my dark days into brighter/ beautiful days and letting people know the truth that is not always told on SM

“Social media is full of controlled narratives, the things that don’t make social media that I know are many.

“Do married men come on social media to say they have multiple girl friends? Or do married women come on social media to they have a side guy/guys?

“Do all the Big girls on social media tell how they made their money to live the lives that you are depressed about?

“Stop Bullying people on social media, it’s another Pandemic on its own.

“You are not any perfect and you will never be,

“When you see people’s struggles on social media and you judge them and then forgetting how horrible you are in your own controlled reality life and how you can’t even feed, how you sleep with married men to make money.”

  • Nigerian man, Izu Mmadubueze commits suicide in US after being accused of rape

Nigerian man, Izu Mmadubueze commits suicide in US after being accused of rape

Social media users, yesterday, took to the micro-blogging platform, Twitter, to express outrage and demand justice for a young man who reportedly committed suicide after he was added to a “list of rapists” on Twitter.

The Florida-based Izu Mmadubueze ended his own life after being accused of rape. This was disclosed by one of his friends, Nnamdi Anekwe-Chive, a security strategist and consultant, who said Izu took his life because he was wrongly accused.

“I just received a very troubling phone call in respect of Izu Mmadubueze. He is a relation of mine, who lived alone in Florida, USA. It has been confirmed that Izu from Umueze Anam, Anambra State, apparently committed suicide owing to false accusations of rape by this lady and her friends,” he wrote.

In June, a Twitter user (@nanichianese) had published names of men whom she claimed were sexual abusers. She also claimed she was asked to compile the list for “safety purpose. I have heard some folks ask for a compounded list of abusers to avoid for safety purposes. I will add to this thread as I find out more names,” she wrote.

Izu, who was said to have been on the list, had reached out to the lady to find out whom his accuser was so he could clear his name. The curator of the list was, however, said to have refused to disclose the victim’s identity, claiming the victim would prefer to remain anonymous. After further prodding, she disclosed the harassment was not physical, but she won’t be revealing any further details.

Izu then penned a note asking her to extend his sincere apology to the victim for any form of harassment he could have put her through “though he was still shocked at the accusation.”

Izu would later take his life. His last tweet on July 17, read: “Oh and if you’re reading this, I’m dead lol.”The curator of the said list has since deactivated her account amid reports that she had made advances at Izu in the past but was rejected.

Izu’s death has provoked outrage on Twitter with users demanding justice with the hashtag #JusticeForIzu. Social media users have called for tough punishment for people who falsely accuse others of rape or sexual harassment to curb the trend of ‘weaponising’ rape.

Oscar Romero wrote: “Every time we take a step forward in this issue of rape, there are always those that take us three steps backwards. How can we be fighting to create a safe space for victims to voice out and there are others weaponizing rape in a false manner to get back at others?”

Oluwafunmilayo wrote: “Women who falsely accuse men of sexual crimes should have to register as sex offenders and serve a mandatory jail term. False rape allegations should be taken seriously too. Nobody should ever suffer from this. It is becoming too much.”

Another user, @Uncle_clique, wrote: “Accusing someone falsely of rape knowing it would ruin their reputation and everything they have worked for, including their life, is pure evil. If your best comeback against someone is to accuse them falsely, then you are weak, wicked and beyond redemption.”

Stories bordering on rape, sexual harassment and gender-based violence have dominated the media space for weeks on end, with lawmakers recently amending and passing laws that prescribe stricter punishment for sexual offenders in the country.

  • Actor’s suicide sparks uproar in film industry

Actor’s suicide sparks uproar in film industry

Indian police will probe whether an up-and-coming Bollywood actor who committed suicide at the weekend was depressed in part due to “professional rivalry,” in a film industry that is dominated by big names and has been accused of being insular.

Sushant Singh Rajput, a 34 year-old actor who won acclaim and fans for his roles in several top-draw films, hailed from a middle-class family with no Bollywood connections – a relative rarity in the industry.

Rajput was found dead at his residence in Mumbai on Sunday.

“There are media reports that he allegedly suffered from clinical depression because of professional rivalry. @MumbaiPolice will probe this angle too,” the home (interior) minister in Maharashtra, which includes the film capital Mumbai, tweeted late on Monday.

Several of Rajput’s friends in the industry have written about his struggles to break through, while social media and some cultural commentators have criticised the allegedly closed culture in Bollywood, where some families have dominated for up to four generations.

Rajput’s family has not commented so far.

At least half a dozen accounts by Rajput’s industry colleagues suggested Bollywood’s clique-drive culture ostracised him, although none provided concrete details and it was not immediately clear who specifically they were talking about.

“I knew the pain you were going through. I knew the story of the people who let you down so bad that you used to weep on my shoulder,” Shekhar Kapur, who was supposed to direct Rajput in a film that was eventually shelved, wrote in a tweet on Monday.

Kapur did not immediately respond to a request for further details.

In a separate tweet, actress Swara Bhasker called accusations against Bollywood personalities “the height of idiocy.”

“We don’t know what he (Rajput) went through. We don’t know the cause. STOP taking out your frustration using the pain of a troubled person… Let him have his peace & his family privacy,” she tweeted on Tuesday.

  • Man, 50, commits suicide in Abia community

A 50-year-old man, identified as Chukwudi Maduka has allegedly committed suicide at Umuezu-Ore Umuana village in the Uhuahia North Local Government Area of Abia.

The Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, SP. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Tuesday.
