The statement reads: ”The Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, in conjunction with the National Moon Sighting Committee did not receive any reports across the country confirming sighting of the new moon of Shawwal 1445AH on Monday.

“Therefore, Tuesday, April 9, is declared as the 30th day of the month of Ramadan 1445AH.

“The Sultan has accepted the report and accordingly,  declared Wednesday, April 10, as the first day of Shawwal 1445AH, the day of Eid-El-Fitr,” it said.

The statement said Abubakar extended his felicitations to the Nigerian Muslim Ummah and wished them Allah’s guidance and blessings.

The Sultan, while urging Muslims to continue praying for peace, pprogres and development in the country, also wished them a happy Eid-El-Fitr.

Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, immediately follows Ramadan, marking the commencement of Eid-El-Fitr.

The month symbolises new beginnings and spiritual rejuvenation after a month of purification, offering ample opportunities to sustain the positive habits cultivated during Ramadan.

Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has declared Monday, March 11, as the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH in Nigeria.

Abubakar announced the sighting of the new crescent in Sokoto on Sunday in a radio and television broadcast.

He said the new moon was sighted in different parts of the country and that reports of the moon sighting were received from Muslim leaders and organisations from across the country.

“After due verification and authentication by the National Moon Sighting Committee and states committees’ confirmation, as well as routine scrutiny, I hereby, announce the sighting of the new moon of Ramadan signifying the end of Sha’aban 1445 AH.

”In accordance with Islamic law, Muslims are to commence fasting on Monday accordingly,” he declared.

The sultan urged Muslim faithfuls to devote themselves fully to the worship of Allah throughout the Holy Month, urging them to use the period to pray for the progress, peace and prosperity of the nation.

The Sultan also called on wealthy individuals to assist the poor and stressed the need for increased religious tolerance and brotherhood in Nigeria.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, signifies a month-long period of fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam.

Ramadan: Tinubu urges affluent Nigerians to help indigents

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has urged wealthy individuals to assist the indigents in the society to alleviate their suffering particularly during the Ramadan fast.

Tinubu made the call on Sunday in Kano while inaugurating the distribution of 140 truck-loads of rice donated by Sen. Abdullahi Yari in honor of the president.

Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Print Media, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Tinubu commended the gesture.

He said that it was aimed at supporting individuals who were in need at this critical time.

“All over the world, leadership belongs to more than one person. There is need to always help the vulnerable in the society.

“Let us come together, unite as a country and forge ahead for a better Nigeria,” he said.

Tinubu commended Yari for donating the 140 trucks of rice labelled with his name and picture for distribution to the less-privileged.

He also said that the commodity would go along way in easing the hardship faced by many at this time.

The president, however, called on Nigerians to pray for the unity, peace and progress of the country during the holy month of Ramadan.

Earlier, the representative of Yari, Dr Abubakar Danburam, said the 140 trucks contained 50kg of 84, 000 bags of rice.

Danburam revealed that it would be distributed to at least 500,000 households in the North.

He said that the gesture was to complement Tinubu’s efforts of supporting the needy and other vulnerables in the society.

Yari enjoined Nigerians to pray for relief from the economic challenges bedeviling the nation.

Ramadan: Atiku urges Muslims on charity, prayer for Nigeria

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has enjoined Muslim faithful in Nigeria to extend their charity to the less privileged as they begin the Ramadan fasting.

Abubakar, in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja on Sunday, advised Muslims to assume the month of Ramadan by seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

He said that by the sighting of the Ramadan moon, Muslims across the world, especially in Nigeria, should spend more time supplicating to God for His mercy on the country and on individuals.

“The month of Ramadan is a mercy from God upon humanity and all those who partake of the fasting.

“It is for that reason that the Almighty also enjoins us to show more love to one another and deepen our charity in the holy month,” he said.

Abubakar said that this year’s Ramadan was happening at a time when there was hardship in the country.

“It therefore becomes more important for those with means to ensure that they extend their charity far greater than the previous years,” he said.

The former vice president enjoined every Muslim to be steadfast in the requirements of the holy month.

He urged them to pray that the Almighty Allah should shower His mercy and blessings on Nigeria and guide the country to increased prosperity and peace, during and after the Ramadan period.

“I also gave assurance of government’s support as they continue in their role as powerful custodians of our unique cultural values”.

Earlier, President Tinubu assured that his administration would run an open-door policy that listens in order  to transform the country’s rich potentials to reality.

Tinubu stated this during an interactive session with the leadership and members  of the NCTRN.

The President revealed the decision of government on fuel subsidy, security, jobs creation, enabling business environment and election of National Assembly principal officers.

‘‘We are all ears. We are ready to listen at any given time. I promise you an open-door policy and that is the way I will go.

‘‘That open-door policy is for you to call me and send to me at any given time any concern that you might have.

‘‘We may not have it right 100 per cent of the time but we must get it right 90 per cent of the time for this country,’’ he said.

On the removal  of fuel subsidy, the President appealed to the traditional leaders to persuade Nigerians to have faith and that the pump prices of fuel would eventually come down.

‘‘I am grateful that you are paying attention to what I have been doing. You have paid attention to the subsidy removal.

“Why should we in good heart and sense, feed smugglers and be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries?

‘‘The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy.

“A country that cannot pay salaries and we say we have potentials to encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing,’’ he said.

While acknowledging concerns on the need for critical infrastructure in different parts of the country, Tinubu pledged that any road block on the way of the progress of the country would be removed.

Tinubu said he was ready to work with any elected representative, stressing that the Nigeria project was of paramount importance to him.

On security, the President reiterated his pledge to prioritise the sector until Nigerians “go to sleep with their two eyes closed.’’

He said that the unity of the country could not be compromised, adding that every region of the country would get “what it is due.”

“We are going to tackle youth unemployment. It is only when we have the prosperity for the country that we can create jobs that will employ our youths.’’

He decried crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region by a ‘tiny percentage’ of the population, adding that it was counterproductive to the economy.

“We need to tame those involved in this sabotage and we will work as hard as possible to ensure that the diversity of this country is used for its prosperity, growth and stability.’’

Tinubu told the traditional rulers he was primed for governance now the campaigns and elections were over.

On electricity, the President said a constitutional amendment signed into law now allows Nigeria’s 36 States to generate electricity.

“That’s devolution of power and that should be our contribution to the developmental projects you are looking for and we will continue in ways that will help our people,’’ he said.

Tinubu thanked members of NCTRN for their early visit and prayers for the success of his administration.

The Chairman and Co-Chairman of NCTRN pledged the support of members from the six geo-political zones.

They assured the President of their continued prayers in his resolve to move the country forward under his Renewed Hope agenda.

“We are 100 per cent in support of your government and we believe in the will of the Almighty Allah you will move this country forward.

“We will contribute our quota to the development of the country once you reach out to us,’’ the Sultan said.

Bishop Kukah reveals real problem of Nigeria as Sultan sets agenda for Tinubu

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the incoming administration of Sen. Bola Tinubu to ensure good governance and developmental politics.

Abubakar gave the task on Saturday in Abuja at the 2023 Presidential Inauguration Lecture.

The lecture, titled “Deepening Democracy for Development and Integration”, was delivered by the former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to the Sultan, Kenyatta’s words in calling for unity and inclusiveness in governance in Nigeria were those of a very patriotic Nigerian.

“The democracy we are supposed to practice is the type that allows for the development, peace and stability of our people.

“Without development, without stability, there is no democracy. You do not have democracy when you do not have good leaders to practice that democracy.

“Leadership is of utmost importance if we want to practice democracy and move the country forward,” he said.

The Sultan said that it was a worthy achievement that Nigeria was celebrating its seventh consecutive democratic transition.

He described the milestone as a significant achievement for both the winners and those who did not win in the election, adding that they both share in the credit.

“We are here to see how we can enrich the conversation and advise the incoming administration on ways to improve on governance and development in an atmosphere of peace and security,” he said.

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, said that religion, just like any other form of identity like ethnicity and gender, was not a problem in Nigeria.

According to Kukah, the real problem is when these categories are left unattended.

“It is then that they provoke problems. I do not like to talk about religion because I do not believe that we have a religion problem,” he said.

He called on African leaders to wake up to the threat of “illiberal democracy”.

“There is a resurgence of democracy that looks like democracy but does not work like democracy,” he said.

He called on the incoming administration to take advantage of Kenyatta’s lecture as a basis to build a good society.

Mr Akinwumi Adesina, the President of African Development Bank, said the election of a new president always elicited hope.

Adesina said that Nigerians would be looking to the incoming government with the hope that it will assure security, peace and stability.

“Hope that you will heal and unite the fractured nations; hope that you will rise above patronage and forge a compelling force to move the nation forward with inclusiveness, fairness and equity.

“Also, hope that you will dramatically improve the economy,” he said.

He said the starting point in fixing the economy must be micro economy and fiscal stability.

“Unless the micro economy is revived the fiscal challenges addressed boldly, resources for development will not be there,” he said.

On his part, Mr Dayo Israel urged the incoming government to encourage greater youth participation in governance.

Israel also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for enabling the “Not too young to run” Bill that became a law.

New administration will take off May 29 whether they like it or not – Sultan

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has said Nigerians should know that a new administration would take over on May 29 “whether they like it or not.”

The Sultan made this statement during a roundtable engagement with traditional and religious rulers, organized by the World Bank to fashion a way out to increase human capital development in the country.

According to him, “There must be change because in the next few days or weeks there will be a new government, what can we contribute to that government to stabilize?

“Whether anybody likes it, it must take place, a new government is coming on 29 May, so what can we do besides prayers because we believe in Almighty, we believe in God that gives and takes.

“After that so what? What do we do to help the government stabilize and move the country forward?”

He added that it is an opportunity for religious and traditional leaders to work together for the betterment of the country.

“Let us continue to work as one big family with different mothers and fathers or whatever it is, but our main father and mother is Nigeria. As religious leaders, there must be equity and justice in whatever is being done and that is what I think we need to talk about the most,” Sultan said.

While explaining the efforts the leaders undergo for the development of their communities, he said, “We cater for thousands of people to go to schools but we don’t come out to say it.”

The Sultan also said , “Of course, our health care system, you know what it is, if a big man has a headache, he goes to London to take Panadol and comes back, it is a fact. So many of our governors built so many clinics, nothing is there but littered with rats but in the books, you have built 1,000 clinics in your state, it is a fact. These are things we are seeing.

“I am not mentioning anybody but giving a general view, so let no governor come and pick me and say Sultan has criticized me. I am not criticizing anybody.

“I am making a critique which is different from criticizing, so people should know that. You can critique an issue so that people will be better. We don’t criticize anybody because we have access to these people to sit down one on one, that is what we have been doing.”

2023: Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar speaks on endorsing Peter Obi

Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar the Sultan of Sokoto, has denied ever endorsing the Labour Party presidential candidate, LP, Peter Obi.

According to Abubakar, the report that he endorsed Peter Obi is false and misleading.

A report had quoted Abubakar as saying Nigerians should hold him responsible if Obi failed to perform as president.

Reacting, the Sultan of Sokoto said such a report was false, while charging those behind it to produce evidence.

A statement by the monarch’s Media Aide, Prince Bashir said Obi never visited his palace on Wednesday or Thursday.

The statement reads: “For the avoidance of doubt, the statement is fake because such an irresponsible write-up, credited to him, could not have emanated from anywhere near or around His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President of NSCIA.

“It would interest Nigerians to know that the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, was not one of those that paid a visit to the palace, whether on Wednesday or Thursday.

“The simple challenge is to ask them to publish a copy of the letter purportedly written by the Sultan or a video or audio clip where he endorsed Peter Obi and denied APC’s Tinubu as contained in their peddled fakeness.”
