  • No single day passes without people being killed in North, Sultan cries out

No single day passes without people being killed in North, Sultan cries out

The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, and the CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, have lampooned the Federal Government for the poor management of the nation’s security.

Following the recent escalation of attacks in the Shinkafi axis of Sokoto, they called for a collective and coordinated approach to solve the nation’s security problems.

Speaking in Abuja at the 4th Quarter 2021 Meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, on Thursday, the Sultan said everything was not right with the country, citing the increased level of crime and criminality across the federation.

The Sultan said, “If I continue talking about the insecurity in the North, we will not leave this room, some few days ago, we are witnesses to the media report on how people were killed in a bus in Sokoto, even though the figure is not correct, but even one life is important, there is no single day that passes without people being killed in the North especially in the North West now, but we don’t hear it.

“Let’s not deceive ourselves, everything is not alright, I have said this so many times, and to know that you have a problem, you have part of the solution. The earlier we rise up to the occasion, come together, the better for us.”

Citing the recent threat letter by bandits to Christians in Zamfara state, the Sultan also came hard on the security agencies for not doing enough to investigate and authentication the source of violent message.

He lamented that the lack of due diligence by the police before informing Christians of the planned attack on Churches in Zamfara could have frightened worshippers and dampened their faith.

Sultan said, “When I saw a note that the bandits are threatening Christians in Zamfara, I asked what is the work of our security agencies? Why will they come out and make such comment when they have not verified it? You are making people to be more frightened.

“I will not stop going to mosque to pray because I saw in a paper that if I go to mosque I will be killed, let me be killed. I must die. So, Christians should not be afraid of going to church to worship because an anonymous person is threatening them.”

While advocating for a new approach and strategy to address some of the challenges in the country, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar said some religious leaders have been part of the major problems the nation is facing.

“We have to be careful in the way we handle, say and do things as religious leaders. We are not political leaders. Therefore, we have to be wary of what we say, where and how we say such things, because our followers will definitely believe in what we say. They will believe and feel that it is from the Holy Koran or the Holy Bible.

“We cannot go on telling things to people without thinking that they will believe. We cannot go on saying things that we know we don’t have full knowledge of,” the monarch cautioned.

On his part, Ayokunle who co-Chairs NIREC with the Sultan, described the nation’s highways as “den of kidnappers and a no-go-area for travellers.”

He wondered why the security forces could not trace the kidnappers to their hideout and rescue the victims.

According to him, “Travelling from one point to another by road in particular have become a very great risk, kidnapper are everywhere and they don’t only come out to kidnap but also to kill, so you don’t know who the next victim is going to be.

“Why should these people be killing and hiding people in our territory without being challenged, why should it be easy for them to hide people somewhere within the state and the security agencies in the state within few days or weeks will not be able to fish them out?”

Above all, the CAN President called for increase in intelligence gathering; urging the public to also volunteer information to the security agencies to help the tracing and apprehension of the criminals.

He also advocated for increased investment in the military to enhance their performance, and warned the security forces to purge themselves of elements who aid and abet criminality in the country.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of NIREC, Prof. Cornelius Omonokhua, called on Christians and Muslims to join hands to fight terrorism and insecurity.

“No terrorist can be a religious person and no religious person can be a terrorist. We must come together now to pray and fight those who have waged war against humanity in Nigeria,” Omonokhua noted.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged security agencies and political leaders to deal decisively with all those who think they can turn the country upside down through misinterpretation of religious teachings.

Speaking at the 2nd National Education Summit of the Nigerian Army, holding in Sokoto, the monarch highlighted the problem with extremism.

“So many people turn religious upside down to suit them because they have not been properly guided on what should be the teachings, especially of the two major religions.”

“This has been a serious challenge to us. So education is one area where we can deal properly with the challenge of extremism.

“We should and we must not allow extremists to take over any section of the country and we must do so by challenging them educationally and security wise,” he said

The monarch said the summit was coming at the right time because of so many challenges in the country.

The Sultan said lack of implementation of resolutions reached at similar summits was the reason why Nigeria was enmeshed in various problems.

“The more we come together to discuss our problems, the more solutions will come and the more we implement a those solutions, the better for the country.”

He also stressed the need for Nigerians to deemphasise paper qualification by making education very functional and productive.

He also advised that, lessons should be taught in local languages, saying this would make our students to learn better and faster.

In his remarks, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal noted that the summit happened at the right time in view of the challenges which were impacting negative on the education sector.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farauk Yahya, said the security challenges are surmountable with maximum cooperation of all and sundry.

  • Insecurity worsening in Nigeria – Sultan cries out again

Insecurity worsening in Nigeria – Sultan cries out again

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar has again expressed concern over the level of insecurity in the country, adding that it has worsened.

Speaking at the 3rd Quarter 2021 Meeting of the Intra-Religious Council in Abuja on Thursday, the Sultan said he won’t hesitate in spilling the truth about the state of the nation.

“Things are not getting better. I have said it and will say it again and again until we see that yes; things are getting better,” Sa’ad Abubakar stated.

The Sultan said it is appalling that these days the “unknown gunmen” raid people’s houses and kill mercilessly.

The monarch wondered how the marauders could remain unknown when the nation has various intelligence agencies.

Although he commended security operatives for their efforts so far, Sa’ad Abubakar said the nation needs “proactive intelligence agencies that will think ahead of anybody, any criminal trying to do something” cynical and disrupt the peace.

The Sultan, who was a military man, explained that proper intelligence gathering will put security operatives a step ahead of the miscreants troubling the nation.

According to him, Nigerians can’t fold their hands while unknown gunmen threaten the nation.

The Sokoto ruler urged the military and the police not to spare any religious leader that comes out to the “public domain to say so many nasty and bad things that would raise tensions higher”.

While admonishing fellow monarchs and religious leaders, the Sultan said “we must always tell the truth even if it is against us or our families.

“We shouldn’t be scared of telling the truth to authorities and that is what we must continue to do”.

He argued that when religious leaders tell the truth, then they can sit at home in peace even as he challenged security agencies to “invite religious leaders who incite violence and interrogate them appropriately.

“All these people calling for such activities must be identified and our security agencies must up their game and take action against them.

“Whether it is a religious leader, ethnic leader or traditional leader, he must be made to face the law, because there is nobody who is above the law,” Sa’ad Abubakar added.

According to him, this step will help in ending the security challenges facing Nigeria.

Speaking on the theme of the meeting, “Making Nigerians Healthy To Achieve Peaceful Society,” the Sultan believes that attaining peace requires honest dialogue.

“We must be honest with ourselves, we cannot come to the council and agree then go back to our various comfort zones and start preaching hatred, and that’s what is happening every day.

“A lot of hate speeches by religious leaders… we are supposed to be very diplomatic.

“I cannot imagine using religion to shed people’s blood,” the monarch said.

He wondered why it is so difficult for the presidency to lead a dialogue involving all leaders, elders and people who can influence the citizens.

“Why are we afraid of talking to one another? What dialogue cannot solve, violence will never solve.”

“There must be a time to rise up and go beyond ethnic and religious sentiments and sit down and talk to one another in the most honest way and tell ourselves the truth.

“What’s really happening in this country is not right and this is how we should go if we really want to have a country.

“The presidency must lead the way, reach out to people, sit down and talk to one another because I have seen the goodwill of the people of this country towards one another.”

Some of the attendees at the meeting were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Olasupo Ayokunle.
