Infantino reveals how Nigeria can host FIFA competitions

FIFA President, Gianni Infantino on Thursday, in Abuja, revealed how Nigeria can be made a destination for top Grade A football matches and FIFA competitions.

Infantino gave the insight when the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare took him on a tour of the renovated main bowl of the Moshood Abiola national stadium.

The FIFA boss, who was visibly happy with the re-grassed pitch at the stadium, said well maintained stadia with good pitches was key to hosting grade A matches.

He said FIFA was ready to work more closely with Nigeria to develop the game and host more grade A matches in the country.

“We (FIFA) have to make sure when a country, when a government with the President, the minister and private persons are investing in football, in stadia, we work with them to give something back.

“It’s obvious that stadiums like this (Moshood Abiola stadium) and others in Nigeria deserve the best quality games.

“They deserve top national team games, top club games and it’s not just about Nigerian football or African football, it’s about global football,

“We are working together to see what kind of new opportunities, competitions we can bring for men and women to fill this stadium and make the heart of the stadium beat for fantastic spectacle that all of Nigerian love, which is football,” he said.

Earlier, the minister said the Federal Government will continue to invest in sports development and facilities.

The FIFA President, in company of the minister, had earlier visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the State house, as part of his engagement.

  • World Athletics Under-20 Championships: FG to reward gold medalists with $5,000

World Athletics Under-20 Championships: FG to reward gold medalists with $5,000

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on Saturday announced cash rewards for Nigerian athletes who won medals at the ongoing World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

Toyin Ibitoye, Special Assistant (Multimedia) to the minister, disclosed this in a statement saying the cash rewards would see the athletes receiving 5,000 dollars for a gold medal.

”The sum of 3,000 dollars is for a silver medal and 2,000 dollars for a bronze medal.”

He recalled that the minister had pledged to handsomely reward athletes who did well at the championships even before the start of the competition.

NAN reports that, at the end of Day 4 of competition at the five-day-old championships Nigeria had won three gold and two bronze medals.

The medal haul has moved Nigeria to third place on the medals table behind hosts Kenya and Finland.

Nigeria’s 4×400m mixed relay team started the gold rush before Imaobong Uko (women’s 400m) and Udodi Onwuzurike (men’s 200m) won the finals of their events in dominant fashion.

Favour Ofili (women’s 200m) and Chinacherem Nnamdi (men’s javelin) won Team Nigeria’s bronze medals.

There are expectations of more podium finishes for Team Nigeria in the men’s and women’s 4×100m relays and the women’s 4×400m relay on Sunday, the championships’ final day.

NAN reports that medal-winning athletes of Team Nigeria at the just-concluded Olympic Games in Tokyo were also given cash awards.

This is however the first time athletes to the World Athletics Under-20 Championships would be financially rewarded for their performances.

  • My Tokyo 2020 Olympic story – Sports Minister reacts

My Tokyo 2020 Olympic story – Sports Minister reacts

Not wanting to add to the public distraction, I have deliberately waited until the end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games before making any observations regarding the various reports on Nigeria’s participation in the quadrennial games.

    2. This was out of respect for our athletes who had committed so much effort and made such considerable personal sacrifice in order to represent our nation as best as they could. Overall, we should be proud of Team Nigeria and the effort they made. The bottom line is that these games should always be about the athletes and the spirit of friendly competition and excellence the Olympics are meant to engender.

    3. Sadly, some people seem not to have embraced either the good cause of our national athletic pursuits or the collegial and noble spirit that the Olympics promote.

    4. The rancour and confusion some people seem intent on sowing are terribly out of place given the impressive performance of our team and good spirit with which they performed. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are now over, which means we can begin to honestly and objectively assess what was accomplished as well as what we must do to improve performance for future contests.

    5. Nigeria succeeded with two (2) medals – a silver in wrestling won by Blessing Oborodudu and a bronze in long jump won by Ese Brume. Their performances were inspiring for they affirmed we can and should compete at the highest levels across the full range of sports events. Yes, we had wished and worked for more medals. But we must also put things in perspective. The medal outcome at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics stands as Nigeria’s best result in the last 13 years.

    6. Moreover, the athletes of Team Nigeria did their nation proud. Many of them reached the finals of their respective sports and, competing with all they had, were in contention for medals until the final moment. Any one who saw their efforts would have nothing but the utmost respect for them, their coaches and all the technical staff that made Tokyo possible.

    7. I thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his unrelenting support for Sports and Youth development and indeed for the opportunity to serve and lead our participation at these games. Team Nigeria placed 74th position on the final Olympic medal table among 205 participating countries, despite our small contingent to the games. We were 8th among 52 African countries that participated. Team Nigeria excelled in many areas that engender hope for greater success in the future.

    8. Nigeria had five Olympic finalists in 100 meters Hurdles Women, Short Put, Long jump, Wrestling and 100 meters men. Team Nigeria broke the 13 year old jinx of no medal in Long jump and 25 years of no finalist in the men’s 100 meters, and secured a medal in wrestling for the very first time. Overall, our performance was good and more importantly it is headed in the right direction.

    9. While the general trends and overall performance was positive, I must mention two unfortunate incidents that occurred.

    10. First is the mishap resulting in 10 Team Nigeria athletes being ruled ineligible to compete for missing their mandatory Out of Competition Test, OTC. When notice of this ruling got to me, I immediately mobilized my team and the AFN leadership to see how the situation could be salvaged. We mounted a vigorous appeal process with Athletics Integrity Unit, AIU and had the team members complete the tests. However, timing became the critical issue . Despite our energetic appeal, the deciding committee made its announcement which gave no latitude to our team members for what was only an inadvertent lapse.

    11. The adverse decision was painful to accept. We had prepared carefully and eagerly for the Olympics with the expectation that each person, federation, coach and athlete would also complete the necessary preparations required of them. As Minister, I ensured that all necessary approvals were done so that all requisite tests and exams could be timely completed. For me this unfortunate incident is most painful because these athletes had prepared long and hard and also in view of the challenging circumstances due to COVID-19.

    12. As the Minister I must bear some institutional responsibility for this lapse. I also had to depend and expect that each person in the long and often technical chain will perform their role expeditiously and with precision. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line someone failed in their responsibility and as Minister I bear the responsibility and brunt of criticsm. But that is not enough. I must move to ensure that Nigeria never experiences another such moment. I have ordered a full investigation that will not only uncover what happened, but will also, recommend a process where such lapses can never occur in the future and initiate leveraging compliance monitoring technology to guardrail this.

    13. I have personally apologized to the affected athletes. Here and now, I personally apologize to all Nigerians for this ineligibility episode. The AFN has also taken responsibility and apologized to the athletes and to Nigerians.

    14. Already, a new Medical and Anti-Doping Commission has been set up to establish a fool proof system of testing and ensure Nigeria exits the A Categorization by WADA.
Also,Blessing Okagbare remains one of our best athletes who has served Nigeria well. We emphatize with her. Nigeria will monitor closely developments around her temporary suspension and appeal.

    15. The second issue had to do with the apparel provided for the team.

    16. The Ministry’s responsibility and that of the 38 National Sporting Federations, NSFs of kitting are well spelt out. The production of general wears for Team Nigeria is always the responsibility of the Ministry of Youth and Sport Development. Procurement for the Competition Wear is the responsibility of the respective federations because of the fact that each sport requires specialized outfits. Boxing, Wrestling, Atheletics and each of the federations need different gears. The Ministry provides budgetary support to the federations.

    17. The quantity of competition wears given to each athlete is the decision of the particular federation. No complaints came to my notice until the Tik Tok Video posted by one of the athletes went viral. We Immediately stepped in to manage the situation. The Federation involved has been directed to provide a detailed explanation about the kit.

    18. Team Nigeria was properly kitted for the games with a 9-item back pack using a local manufacturer in harmony with President Buhari’s policy on local content.

    19. Before any federation which is a component of Team Nigeria however wears any brand, it must refer to the Ministry and the NOC for clearance and approval. The Ministry and NOC must be fully aware of the contract details by the Federation to protect the rights and freedoms of the athletes and ensure Nigeria’s interests are protected. In this situation, the Ministry wishes to state that the contractual arrangement between AFN and Puma prior to the Olympic Games has generated a lot of controversy between the former President of the Federation and the former Board members. I will not want to go into too much details on this issue because it is sub judice. Suffice it to say that the Ministry was not part of the agreement. The Tik Tok video on the issue was an attempt to create a media frenzy to embarrass Nigeria.

    20. Following from the above, the issue relating to the competition wears vis a vis the alleged arrangement with Puma is most unfortunate. I have demanded a proper investigation into this matter. Such an inquiry will unearth the truth about how some people tried to sabotage Nigeria’s participation and undermine the country and our Olympic athletes.

    21. On assumption of office as Minister of Youth and Sports 2 years ago, I began a gradual reformation of the National Sports Federations, NSFs. For years, a few of these federations were very badly run. These reforms will take time. There already is and will be stiff resistance from some quarters, which is what we are witnessing now. But we are resolute to establish better sport’s management, a legacy President Muhammadu Buhari is desirous of bequeathing to our sports development.

    22. There is much to hope for the future. In Tokyo, Most of our athletes were young and debutants – first time Olympians. They gave their all. If only we can support them in a sustained manner, they will give us future Olympic medals and raise high the flag of Nigeria at all venues of international sports competition. We have started building a new generation of Young Nigerian athletes who will benefit immensely from the Nigerian Sports Industry Policy which will be placed before the Federal Executive Council for approval shortly. This policy will unleash the economic potential of our sports sector following President Buhari’s reclassification of sports as a business, away from recreation. This will be the foundation for sustained sector growth and maximization of our human resources.

    23. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics experience will move and challenge me to push our sports to a higher level and seek a better condition for all our athletes.

    24. Team Nigeria went to Tokyo 2020 and competed against the best in the world. Two Olympics medals and a statistical performance that has a place in the history of our Olympic participation despite being one of our smallest contingents. We can perform even much better if we alI hold onto the lessons learnt.

    25. I remain grateful to all the athletes that so represented Nigeria well.

Makinde lacks courage, leadership acumen to tackle security challenges in Oyo – Buhari’s Minister

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has carpeted Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde over rising insecurity, especially herdsmen attacks in the state.

He said the worsening situation was due to the inactions of a “ temporising fiddling leader.”

In a statement on Monday, Dare accused Makinde of being scared to take a decision that would protect indigenes of his state from attacks.

Herdsmen attacks have escalated in the state, especially in Igangan Ibarapa North Local Government where Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Fulanis to leave or be flushed out.

In the statement titled ‘Minister wants Makinde to be more decisive on security’, Dare said: “For several months, citizens of Oyo state have watched with increasing concern as the security situation in our beloved state degenerated. Troubling accounts about killings, kidnappings, and herdsmen versus farmers conflicts abound.

“Like all the people of Oyo State, I expected the Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to act prudently but with reasonable dispatch to quell the security situation before it got out of hand. We all waited for proactive steps and responses from the state authority certainly in vain.

“Governor Makinde seems to be paralysed by fear regarding this important security situation. This is the first serious test of his leadership of the state.

“Instead of tackling it, he has retreated. His policy has not been proactive enough to resolve the issues so that security of lives will be guaranteed and our people spared the mourning over dead ones. Instead, his policy has been to act as if nothing was happening in forlorn hope that all would simply go away as if it were a bad dream.

“The worsening developments in the state in the area of security are a direct result of a temporizing fiddling leader.

“The Governor has paid more lip service to the issue of security instead of offering solutions or taking proactive steps to stem the attacks and chart the path of resolution. For this is a complex issue that requires political courage and vision to resolve.”

Ka’oje’s death, huge loss to Nigeria – Sports minister

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare has described the death of former Minister of Sports Malam Bala Ka’oje as a huge loss to the sports industry and the country at large.

The minister said this in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Mr John Joshua-Akanji on Tuesday in Abuja.

“It is shocking to learn about the death of former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Bala Ka’oje.

“So sad that Nigeria has lost a very illustrious son who served this country meritoriously.

” His death has robbed Nigeria of another bright mind and committed public servant.

“This is not just a loss to his family and friends, but the country in general.

“He made his mark while serving as Minister of Youth and Sports,” Dare said.

The minister described Ka’oje as a multi-talented man who served his people and the country with his mind and might.

Ka’oje was also Chairman of defunct National Sports Commission (NSC).

Ka’oje, 60, died on Tuesday morning and his remains were interred according to Islamic rites later same day in Abuja.

He was born in Kebbi State on Sept. 20, 1960.

We need N81m to cut grass in Abuja stadium – Sunday Dare

The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has said it will cost a whopping N81 million to cut grasses that have taken over the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development revealed this during a one-day seminar organised by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT chapter.

According to the Minister, the ministry approached the AEPB for assessment of the stadium, which was built in 2003 with N53 billion on a 29 hectares (72 acres) of land.

The stadium is divided into Package A which houses the Main Bowl and Package B which houses other facilities like basketball courts, NFF office, volleyball courts, tennis courts, squash courts.

“We approached AEPB to come see what can be done to clear the grass and weed in the stadium and they told us it will cost us N81m.

“If we tell Nigerians we used N81m which is not even available, there will be an outcry. The funds are not really there for us and that is why we are partnering with private investors to bring back the key components of our infrastructures,” he said.

  • Minister orders overhaul of Super Eagles

Minister orders overhaul of Super Eagles

Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has called for an overhaul of the Super Eagles technical and administrative structure to achieve better results.

The minister gave the order on Tuesday in Abuja at a meeting with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officials to review the Technical Report of the Nigeria/Sierra Leone AFCON Qualifiers and other matters.

Mr John Joshua-Akanji, Special Adviser to the minister, disclosed this in a statement.

The minister stressed the need to adhere strictly to the terms of contact of Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, especially on performance and development of the game.

“The recent dismal performance of the Super Eagles in their qualifiers against Sierra Leone has raised a few concerns and brought to fore, the need to do a quick critique.

“The government, while concerned about the dismal performance and non discernible pattern of play and team harmony in the Super Eagles, is looking beyond the outcome of the Nigeria versus Sierra Leone matches and AFCON.

“We are looking at the present and future administration of football that speaks to the development of the front room and backroom,” he said.

Dare emphasised the need for the NFF to hold Rohr to the terms of his contract.

“The NFF must tightly hold the Technical Adviser to the KPIs in his contract. Thus, we cannot wait for those conditions to come to life, before we tighten the screws or demand a higher or better performance, better technical depth, better player mix and team harmony and a functional national team.

“The Federal Government will ask the tough and relevant questions. The NFF should do the same. The right of Nigerians to ask of government and indeed NFF explanations for dismal performances and football administration cannot be simply characterised as interference.

“On our part, we will work to support the NFF but we will also demand for answers and changes too on behalf of Nigerians.

“CAF and FIFA, while we appreciate their working partnerships, are expected to support Nigeria in its quest to ensure an effectual football administration.

“Football is now both business and politics. A tool of diplomacy. Governments are more than interested in how its run. The FGN is interested even beyond that. Football is a source of national pride. A rallying point and promoter of peace and unity.

“Nigeria at this point must use the opportunity of the outcome of the Nigeria/Sierra Leone match to X-ray other factors beyond the technical adviser that must have contributed to the dismal performance,” he added.

Earlier, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, while providing a background to what happened, assured the minister that NFF would be more proactive going forward.

He said a few changes and adjustments as discussed and suggested by the ministry will be put into motion.

Pinnick said some of the changes to the team would include a physical trainer, nutritionist, a psychologist and at least
    two match readers.

He also emphasised the need to inject three to four home-based players into the team, picked from the professional league, while Rohr must watch weekly NPFL games and evolve a scientific template to benchmark the performance of the team.

  • Sports Minister, Sunday Dare hints at Rohr’s sack over failure to defeat Sierra Leone

Sports Minister, Sunday Dare hints at Rohr’s sack over failure to defeat Sierra Leone

It appears Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr might have managed his last game in charge of the national team after the Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare questioned his suitability for the job and threatened the “needful will be done” in response to the team’s uninspiring draws with Sierra Leone in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.

Rohr’s position, long under scrutiny, has become perilous after his team blew a four goal lead to draw 4-4 with the Leone Stars in Benin before playing out a disappointing goalless stalemate in Freetown.

Victory in either game would have ensured Nigeria’s place in Cameroon with two games to spare but the Eagles will now wait until March 2021 for another chance to secure their spot.

With the draws, Nigeria failed to win a game in a calendar year for the first time since 1974 after also drawing with Tunisia and losing to Algeria in friendly games played in 2020.

Despite recently signing a two-year extension, the results have left Rohr on the brink with Nigerians turning on him and Dare, whose opposition to the coach is public knowledge, all but confirming Rohr is as good as gone.

Of particular concern is Rohr’s seeming inability to eradicate what has become a common thread in critical matches where the Super Eagles have fallen short.

Against Argentina at the 2018 World Cup, Rohr failed to stem the tide of Argentine pressure with the game poised at 1-1 and Nigeria needing just a draw to make the second round. Marcus Rojo then scored a late winner for the South Americans to dump Nigeria from the tournament with many laying the blame for Nigeria’s ouster at the feet of Rohr.

The Franco-German failed to learn the lessons from that defeat and a year on at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, the Eagles found themselves in a similar situation, tied 1-1 with Algeria in the semifinal with minutes left and extra time beckoning.

Many felt Nigeria would have gone on to win against a clearly tiring Algerians in extra time if Rohr had been proactive but it was the North Africans who triumphed and ended up winning the tournament after Riyad Mahrez’s last minute free kick goal consigned the Eagles to yet another painful but ultimately avoidable defeat under Rohr.

Notwithstanding those disappointments, the former Gabon manager’s contract was renewed this year albeit on vastly reduced terms on the back of two impressive wins against Benin and Lesotho last November as the Eagles started their AFCON qualifying campaign in style.

But the team has yet to win another match and the back-to-back draws against the Leone Stars have thrown up questions about Rohr’s future once again.

Dare who was roundly criticised for his role in the Benin debacle even his predecessor Dalung weighing in after he participated in the team’s training, has been publicly critical of Rohr in the wake of the Sierra Leone games.

It appears Rohr’s head is now firmly on the chopping block with Dare clearly signalling his intent to let the axe descend at any moment.

“The performance of the Super Eagles from their last two matches calls to question the suitability and competences of Technical Adviser, Rohr. Nigerian football deserves better. The needful will be done. Apologies to all football lovers,” the minister wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.
