  • Court remands 19-year-old Ibadan serial killer

    An Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ibadan, has remanded Sunday Shodipe, the acclaimed Ibadan serial killer at Abolongo Correctional Centre.

    19-year-old Shodipe, a resident of Akinyele area in Ibadan, allegedly killed one Funmilayo Oladeji.

    Although, Shodipe is referred to as a serial killer, he is been charged with one – count charge of murder.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Patricia Adetuyibi who did not take his plea, ordered him to be remanded at the Correctional Centre, pending advice from the state Ministry of Justice.

    She adjourned the case till Oct. 26, for mention.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Salewa Ahmed told the court that Shodipe on Aug. 13, at about 2:30 p.m in Moniya area of Akinyele Local Government Area(LGA), allegedly caused the death of Oladeji, 45, by allegedly hitting her with a plank on her forehead.

    He said the offence contravened section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    Shodipe had earlier confessed to the killing of five persons, including Barakat, a student of Institute of Agricultural Research and Training, Ibadan.

    The accused was apprehended along with others and remanded at a police station.

    He then escaped from custody and caused the death of the woman the same day, before he was re- arrested and re- arraigned.

    Barely two days after his escape from police custody, prime suspect in Ibadan serial killings, Sunday Shodipe said he killed again.

    He made this known on Wednesday at Oyo State police command headquarters at Eleyele after his re-arrest on Sunday.

    The suspect said he killed one Mrs Funmilayo Oladeji at her home, two days after disappearing from custody on August 11.

    The 19-year-old said he attacked the woman with a machete, cutting her several times on the head, adding that a juju priest with whom he was detained warned that there would be spiritual consequences if he did not commit more murders.

    He said the fetish priest put him under pressure to escape in order to continue killing.

    Shodipe was paraded with other suspects, including those linked to the Okeho bank robbery on July 29.

    Commissioner of Police Nwachukwu Enwonwu said the suspects would be handed over to the correctional centre, adding that the policeman involved in Shodipe’s escape is “paying dearly for it” in custody.

    BREAKING: Police re-arrest Oyo suspected serial killer

    The Police Command in Oyo State says it has rearrested Sunday Shodipe, the alleged serial killer who escaped from detention at an Ibadan police station.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the spokesman of the Oyo State Police Command, Gbenga Fadeyi confirmed the re-arrest of Shodipe on Sunday.

    The 19-year-old suspect, accused of killing no fewer than six people in Akinyele Local Govermment Area, was re-arrested in the home of his grandmother in Ojoo area of Ibadan.

    Shodipe is linked to the murder of Barakat Bello,18, Azeezat Shomuyiwa, 29, and three others in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.

    The police had on Thursday promised a reward of N500,000 to anyone who could provide tangible information leading to the re-arrest of Shodipe.

    The Commissioner, Oyo State Police Command, Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, has offered details of how suspected serial killer, 19-year-old Sunday Shodipo, escaped form police custody.

    The CP gave the explanation when he spoke with newsmen on Monday.

    Enwonwu said Shodipo escaped from police custody at Mokola Police Division, Ibadan on August 11, 2020 around 7pm.

    He said an Inspector of Police, who was not on duty, collected the keys to the cell and opened it to take the suspect to have his bath,

    He said from there, Shodipo ran away.

    He said efforts had commenced to re-arrest him by all stakeholders who are law abiding police personnel, community leaders, youth vigilantes and hunters among others.

    He said the Inspector of Police had been defaulted, detained and presently facing orderly room trial, which would be concluded by the end of Monday (today).

    Enwonwu said: “In addition, whoever must have been involved in this sordid misconduct would not be spared.

    “The measures we have taken to deal with criminals in the state has been to strategise crime control mechanisms of proactive policing, which emphasises community policing partnership with all the stakeholders, other security agencies, military, vigilante, hunters, traditional rulers, etc.

    “We collaborate, cooperate and it has been working positively.

    “We also do visibility policing and patrols, raids of criminal hideouts on regular basis.

    “It paid off in Okeho bank robbery, where we recovered five assault rifles and arrested five suspects so far.

    “We have arrested several of them, including car snatchers, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminal elements.”

  • Ibadan suspected serial killer, Sunday Shodipe escapes from police custody

    The Oyo State Police Command has announced the escape of a suspected serial killer, Sunday Shodipe, connection with ritual killings of people at the Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

    Commissioner of Police in the state, Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, made this known on Sunday in a statement by Public Relations Officer of the command, Olugbenga Fadeyi.

    The statement reads, “The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP. Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, wishes to state that the prime suspect in the serial killings at Akinyele Local Government Area, Moniya Ibadan, one Sunday Shodipe ‘m’ 19 years, who was arrested and paraded along with two others on 17th July, 2020 and later charged to court but remanded in police custody escaped from lawful custody on 11/08/2020.

    “Consequent upon this, the CP wishes to implore the general public to be on the lookout, arrest and immediately inform the officers and men of the command when sighted for immediate handing over for further action.”
