BREAKING! Major setback hits Super Eagles as Osimhen is ruled out of next match

Major setback as Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

Osimhen, who was forced off in the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, had initially been feared to be struggling with an ankle problem.

However, the team doctor later confirmed the injury as a bruise on his shin.

According to journalist Sulaimon Adebayor, popularly known as Pooja, quoting official NFF sources, Osimhen woke up with discomfort on Sunday morning and will not be traveling with the squad for Tuesday’s clash in Johannesburg against South Africa.

Osimhen had only just returned to the national team setup this month after missing the Unity Cup triumph in May and the 1-1 draw with Russia.

The 26-year-old, who scored twice against Rwanda in March, had a goal disallowed for offside before being forced off early on Saturday.

His absence is a major blow for head coach Eric Chelle, who had hoped to rely on the striker’s firepower in the high-stakes encounter against Bafana Bafana.

Chelle reacts to Super Eagles victory over Rwanda

Super Eagles Head Coach, Eric Chelle, has expressed delight over his team’s victory against Rwanda’s Amavubi in their World Cup qualifying match in Uyo.

Chelle made the remarks during a post-match briefing at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Saturday.

He said he was pleased with the first-half performance, noting the Eagles’ 70 per cent possession, which he attributed to the Rwandan players’ fatigue.

“This is why, in the second half, they did not press us. After our goal, we had two wingers, more professionals, and it was the plan.

“We are happy because we won by one, but we cannot face South Africa with that formation. I am happy only because of Tuesday’s game,” he said.

Chelle said it was his decision not to feature skipper William Troost-Ekong in the first half, insisting his priority was securing three points.

“This is my choice. I do not need to explain. My job is to make decisions. Winning proves the decision was good,” he explained.

He added: “If I fix something, it is based on my heart and analysis. My technical staff and I evaluate players carefully before deciding.”

Chelle noted his tactical preference for a 4-4-2 diamond or flat formation, stressing his need for a strong defence, which was why he used five defenders.

He, however, lamented that the Super Eagles wasted several scoring opportunities in spite of dominating the Amavubi.

Earlier, Captain William Troost-Ekong admitted he took responsibility for not starting the match against Rwanda.

He praised Benjamin Fredrick for an “amazing performance” against Rwanda, though he noted the youngster had faced significant pressure in previous matches.

Troost-Ekong thanked fans and supporters in Uyo, saying it was good to reconnect with them. “We never stopped believing. Welcome back to the family,” he said.

He stressed that Tuesday’s match against South Africa would be decisive, calling for focus and consistency.

“We really believe in what we are doing. We must take it step by step. The next step is South Africa,” Troost-Ekong added.

Just in: Arokodare’s lone goal gives Super Eagles ray of hope for 2026 WCQ

Tolu Arokodare’s lone goal gives the Super Eagles ray of hope for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying alive with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Substitute Tolu Arokodare emerged the hero of the night, finding the back of the net in the 51st minute to secure all three points for Nigeria in a tense Group C encounter. The strike was enough to break the deadlock after both sides had struggled to create clear chances in the first half.

The result came barely 24 hours after group leaders South Africa tightened their grip on the top spot with a comfortable 3-0 win against Lesotho, pushing their tally to 16 points.

With this victory, Nigeria climbed to 10 points from seven matches, moving closer to contention for the group’s automatic World Cup ticket.

Rwanda, on the other hand, remain stuck in fourth place with eight points and their hopes of qualification hanging by a thread.

The Super Eagles now turn their focus to a crucial away clash against South Africa at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. That encounter is widely seen as a decisive fixture that could shape the group standings and determine whether Nigeria stay in the race for top spot.

After the South Africa tie, Nigeria will round off their Group C campaign in October with fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic.

Victories in those matches, combined with a positive result in Bloemfontein, could be enough to book a ticket to the global showpiece in North America.

Growing Pressure on the Super Eagles

The victory eases some of the pressure on head coach Finidi George, whose team had been criticized for inconsistent performances earlier in the campaign. With just three matches left, every point will be crucial as Nigeria seek to return to the World Cup after missing out on Qatar 2022.

Nwabali’s injury puts Super Eagles’ World Cup chances under heavy pressure

Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign has been hit with a major setback after first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was stretchered off injured while playing for his South African club, Chippa United.

Stanley Nwabali, 29, went down clutching his leg during Tuesday’s league clash against Richards Bay and had to be taken off in the first half.

While Chippa’s medical team is still running assessments, the sight of Nwabali in visible pain has left both club and country concerned.

The timing could not be worse for the Super Eagles.

Nwabali has become a dependable safe hands for Nigeria, making 21 appearances and providing much-needed stability between the posts. With crucial qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa scheduled for September, his absence could be a huge blow.

To compound the crisis, Nigeria is already short on options. Maduka Okoye, once seen as the long-term successor in goal, is serving a two-month suspension for illegal betting activities. That leaves coach Eric Chelle with only untested or inexperienced alternatives.

Amas Obasogie, currently playing in Tanzania, has never worn the national colours at the senior level. Adebayo Adeleye, who features for Greek side Volos NPS, has just a single Super Eagles appearance to his name.

It is the most humiliating defeat so far, as the group stage of the tournament is coming to a close.

Former Enyimba goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo has approached a State High Court sitting in Lokoja for the dissolution of his nine-year marriage.

According to Kogi Reports, the Super Eagles goalkeeper failed to turn up for the case during the hearing at Court 6 on Thursday, July 24.

The presiding officer, Justice Ada has adjourned the case till October 2025 when the judiciary resumes for legal matters.

Peter Rufai’s teammates shocked over his death

One of the late Peter Rufai’s Super Eagles teammates, Mutiu Adepoju, has paid tribute to the iconic goalkeeper who passed away on Thursday at age 61.

Similarly, Mr Sani Toro, a former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Football Association, also offered condolences over the death of the international goalkeeping legend.

Both Adepoju and Toro shared their thoughts in separate interviews with on Thursday.

Adepoju described Rufai’s death as a painful loss, saying he was one of the longest-serving goalkeepers in the Super Eagles.

“It is a sad development that a former Super Eagles colleague is gone. I’ve not felt good since hearing about his death this afternoon.

“Late Rufai was a pleasant colleague, though our senior. He was already in the team before I joined the national squad.

“He was widely respected in the team. He taught us unity and team spirit and guided us when I newly joined the Super Eagles.

“He was also a jovial person, very enjoyable to be around whenever we were on the pitch or during camp,” Adepoju said.

Speaking on Rufai’s health, Adepoju said there was no prior report indicating he was unwell.

“I didn’t know he was sick. I tried calling him three months ago, but he didn’t answer. I later reached out to a relative who said he was fine. I later heard he had been ill and hospitalised.

“Perhaps the family wanted to keep it private. We must respect that. I honestly don’t know what the illness was,” Adepoju said.

On his part, Toro described Rufai as a reliable and disciplined individual, both on and off the pitch.

“Peter Rufai was dependable and committed, representing Nigeria at the 1990 AFCON in Algeria and the 1994 tournament in Tunisia.

“He also played in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. He was a complete gentleman. I offer my heartfelt condolences,” Toro said.

Rufai, fondly called ‘Dodo Mayana’, began his football career at Stationery Stores of Lagos between 1980 and 1984.

He also played for K.S.C. Lokeren in Belgium, and later moved to Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands.

The goalkeeper featured for S.C. Farense in Portugal, Hércules CF and Deportivo La Coruña in Spain, and later for Vicente FC in Portugal.

Rufai’s senior national team career spanned eight years, from 1990 to 1998, during which he earned 65 international caps.

He represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, as well as several African Cup of Nations tournaments.

Notably, Rufai was also a Lagos Prince, respected for his calm demeanour both on and off the pitch.

Siasia mourns Rufai, urges government support

Similarly, former Super Eagles player and coach, Samson Siasia, has expressed shock and sadness over the sudden death of his former teammate, Peter Rufai, aged 61.

Siasia, who shared a room with Rufai during the 1994 World Cup in the U.S., told NAN on Thursday in Lagos that it was shocking.

“I was not aware he was ill, and none of the national teammates I know mentioned anything about it. It is terrible news that another colleague has died, just months after Christian Chukwu’s passing.

“The problem with Nigerians is that we value the dead more than the living, especially when it comes to financial support.

“When ex-internationals are alive, nobody cares. We risked our lives for the country,” he said.

Siasia also told NAN: “During the 1994 World Cup, I shared a room with Rufai, so I knew him well. This loss is painful for us and Nigeria.

“The government must do something for ex-internationals. Many cannot afford treatment when they fall ill.

“Those who brought joy to this country deserve support. We must remember we will all grow old too. Those who made Nigeria proud should not be left to suffer. Help should come while they live.”

Siasia urged football authorities to implement a reward system for ex-players, similar to what exists in the United Kingdom.

“In England, former national team players receive £5,000 weekly, not monthly. Why can’t we adopt that? We borrow other good practices from abroad, this should be one of them.

“I appeal to President Bola Tinubu, a known sports lover, to rally stakeholders to support ex-internationals. I believe he will respond.”
