Algeria vs. Nigeria: Can Super Eagles soar above high-flying Algeria?
As the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) reaches its semi-finals stage, there are already upsets and slip ups.
The four remaining teams – Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria and Tunisia – will on Sunday, July 14 square up in battles of the West against the North.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) previews the crunchy tie between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and North African giants Algeria.
Algeria’s statistics so far in the 2019 AFCON has been nothing short of sublime.
Having qualified for the tournament by topping their qualification group which included Republic of Benin, Gambia and Togo, the North African side seem poised to go one better than their AFCON 2010 outing where they finished fourth.
Although Les Fennecs have been eliminated at the group stage in two of their last three AFCON appearances, they have made a strong statement so far at the ongoing AFCON in Egypt.
With a 100 per cent record before their quarter-final game against Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday, Algeria had staked a claim to the continental trophy and are strong contenders.
Les Fennecs’ defence was only finally breached in the 1-1 draw against Cote d’Ivoire before they won the tie 4-3 on penalties after both teams could not find the winning goal.
Before then, Algeria made a light work of their Group C encounters by beating Kenya 1-0, Tanzania 3-0 and Guinea 3-0; scoring nine goals and conceding none in the process.
What keeps this Algeria side going is a complete and solid team in all departments. We have already mentioned how solid a defence they possess.
Conceding only one goal in five matches (scoring 10 in the process) is simply the mark of solidity and Les Fennecs are buoyed by that accomplishment.
Their midfield, anchored by Adlane Guedioura and Captain Riyad Mahrez, had been relentless in both the defensive and attacking ends. Their attack, led by Baghdad Bounedjah, had so far in the tournament run opposition defences riot.
Also crucial to the structure of the Algerian team is the depth of their bench. Bring in Yacine Brahimi, Adam Ounas, Islam Slimani or Andy Delort, and they are able to do as much as the starters.
This much was proved in the game against Cote d’Ivoire when Slimani, coming in for Bounedjah, almost got the winner at extra time but for a fine save by the Elephants’ goalkeeper.
On paper, Les Fennecs will enter the game against the Super Eagles as slight favourites for reasons already stated. They are considered by many as the best team of this AFCON so far.
However, as we have previously seen in this year’s tournament, no match is won in advance. And Les Fennecs’ next game would perhaps be their biggest test in the 2019 AFCON.
Ironically, the only time Algeria won the tournament was in 1990 when they defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the final on home soil.
Nigeria’s route to the semi-finals of the 2019 AFCON was definitely not as smooth as Algeria’s. The Super Eagles finished second in Group B with six points and below debutants Madagascar.
A 3-2 victory against defending champions Cameroon in the second round, followed by a 2-1 win against giant slayers South Africa in the quarter-finals set the stage for Sunday’s encounter with Algeria.
While many pundits have decried the lack of fluidity in the Super Eagles’ play (and correctly so), the three-time champions seemed to get better as the tournament progresses.
Still shaky at the back sometimes, especially when defending set pieces, Nigeria would have to bring their game against Algeria to keep hopes of a fourth AFCON title alive.
The Eagles’ inability to keep a clean sheet in their last three games should worry the Coach Gernor Rohr side.
They’ve had to come from behind against Cameroon to win 3-2 and needed an 88th minute goal by defender William Troost-Ekong to see off South Africa 2-1 to progress.
Against a stingy Algerian defence, Nigeria might find it difficult to chase the game or launch a comeback if they trail their defensively cohesive North African opponents.
This said, Algeria know better than judge Nigeria by mere statistics. The Super Eagles have been one of the most consistent teams in the history of AFCON.
They have got to the semi-finals stage or further in 14 of their 17 AFCON appearances, including 11 of the last 12. Unlike Les Fennecs, AFCON is one tournament the Super Eagles know how to play.
And so far in Egypt, one aspect of the Eagles’ set up worthy of mention is the inability of their opponents to read their game.
This much was alluded to by Gbenga Elegbeleye, former Director-General, National Sports Commission, after the game against South Africa.
“One cannot predict what department the Eagles will focus their play on and this often creates confusion for their opponents.
“You can’t really say this is where the team is good or this is where it is bad. What I have realised is that they approach a game depending on their opponent.
“For instance, against Cameroon, Nigeria played a game worthy of defeating a technical team like Cameroon who were defending champions. The Super Eagles’ attack was key to that victory.
“On the other hand, if you look at the quarter-final game against Bafana Bafana, you’ll observe that we didn’t give them room to operate in the midfield,” he said.
The last time Nigeria won AFCON in South Africa in 2013, they followed a similar unpredictable path to victory.
They drew 1-1 against Zambia and Burkina Faso in their first two group matches before beating Ethiopia 2-0 in their final group game to progress into the quarter-finals.
The Super Eagles recorded a 2-1 win against tournament favourites, Cote d’Ivoire in their quarter-final match before thumping Mali (also huge contenders) 4-1 in the semi-finals.
They went on to lift the trophy with a 1-0 defeat of Group C foes, Burkina Faso.
Come Sunday, the Super Eagles will attempt to soar above a high-flying Les Fennecs for a chance at repeating the 2013 feat of travelling a rocky path to AFCON glory. -
You are a Xenophobe –Former-BBA housemate slams AKA
Ex-BBA housemate, Akintayo Faniran has attacked South African musician, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, alias AKA, over his comments on Bafana Bafana defeat at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, quarter-final match played on Wednesday.
TheNewsGuru recalls that AKA recently reacted angrily to Super Eagles victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
AKA, who was angry over the outcome, took to his Twitter account to express his gloom over South Africa’s defeat to the three-time African champion, asking why his country always lost against Nigeria at everything.
He said that he would have preferred the Bafana Bafana losing their previous matches to avoid facing Nigeria.
“I’m hurt man.
”This match was bigger than football.
“The biggest rivalry on the continent.
”Why do we always have to lose against Naija at everything.
”It is a hard pill to swallow man. We keep on losing to Nigeria in every way.
”We should have just lost to Egypt, rather than Nigeria.”
In his reaction, Tayo Faniran slammed the rapper, calling him a xenophobe and a low life.
“These are highly xenophobic statements, pure display of illiteracy, spoken like a low life from the corner, definitely not an African role model.
“I’m disappointed in you AKA,we are preaching peace and all you do is to spit out this dirty nonsense? …
“You see when I mentioned that deep down many of these African stars that we support with our money and minds actually hate us foreigners.
“I wish all your Nigerian fans can see this,” he wrote on instagram.

AFCON 2019: Yobo, Okocha hail VAR decision against Super Eagles
Ex-Internationals Joseph Yobo and Austin Jay-Jay Okocha have hailed the decision of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which awarded a “contentious goal” to South Africa in the quarter-final game against Nigeria.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the VAR system was introduced at the quarter-final stage of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt and is being used in the competition for the first time.
It made its first significant intervention when it overruled a linesman’s decision to disallow South Africa’s Bongani Zungu’s goal for offside in their quarterfinal game against Nigeria.
Okocha and Yobo who were guests analyst on a football show hosted by Super Sports on Thursday, said VAR was a welcome development in the AFCON and must be embraced by all football stakeholders on the African continent.
“At first, I thought it was an offside goal, but then when we saw the VAR replay it was obvious that the ball came off the back of Odion Ighalo which automatically put South Africa’s Zungu onside position.
“So, it was legitimate at the end of the day and it rightly stood even though the linesman had initially ruled the goal as offside.
“That’s the beauty of VAR. A lot of people have been criticising the newly introduced technology, but the truth is that no one wants to go home feeling cheated.
“This is why we need technology in football now because the game has become a lot quicker than what it used to be and with the ordinary eyes you can’t really get everything,” Okocha said.
Yobo, on his part said: “I think with VAR there has to be a little bit more clarity. I can’t understand why they are not showing us (viewers) all the angles.
“From my understanding, they have about 12 angles, so they have to show it all to the fans, viewers and the players because these are decisive moments in a game.
“In this particular situation, I think the VAR probably got it right but can they give us some clarity earlier on? So, that decisions can be made and for viewers, fans and everybody can understand the reason behind the decision.
“But like Okocha rightly said, I think VAR is there to help the game and at the moment I think they are doing very well,” he said.

AFCON 2019: Sports analyst urges Super Eagles to lift trophy
A Sports Analyst, Deji Okeowo, has advised Coach Gernot Rohr and the technical crew to map out strategies that will make the team lift the trophy of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Okeowo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, on Thursday.
He commended the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the ongoing AFCON and urged the Super Eagles to go back to the drawing board for the remaining matches.
The analyst lauded the Super Eagles for defending well against the South African team.
“The victory of the Super Eagles is commendable because they had made Nigerians proud,’’ he said.
Okeowo urged the Super Eagles to remain disciplined as they still have big tasks ahead of them in the competition.

2019 AFCON: Patience was key to victory over South Africa – Musa
Super Eagles’ Vice-Captain Ahmed Muse says patience was the key to the team’s victory against South Africa in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt on Wednesday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles on Wednesday defeated Bafana Bafana of South Africa 2-1 in the quarter-finals of AFCON 2019 in Egypt.
A goal each in each half from Samuel Chukwueze and William Troost-Ekong saw Nigeria eliminate South Africa from the tournament and advance to the semi-finals.
Musa told reporters in a post-match interview that the Super Eagles’ plan going into the game was to stay focused and patient against a resolute South African side.
“We knew that the game against South Africa would be tough and not an easy ride.
“So, we spoke and reminded ourselves of the need to be patient as we worked towards achieving our goal.
“As you can see, we had to wait until the last minute to score the decisive goal and that is the most important thing,” he said.
Musa noted that both Nigeria and South Africa had similar styles of play as they possessed more attacking prowess on the flanks.
“I think the same thing they (South Africa) have is what we too have on the wings. Both teams played the same style of football.
“But the difference was that we were more patient and persistent in our approach than our opponents.
“Chukwueze is one of the young and talented players in our squad. He had a great game today and scored a fantastic goal.
“I think with time he is going to be one of the best players we have in the Super Eagles team.
“Chidozie Awaziem, Wilfred Ndidi and Jamilu Colliins are also other young talents in the squad and players for the future.
“As you know, we the old players in the squad are gradually winding down and will not be here in a couple of years from now.
“So, we definitely need players like them to step up and take over from us,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles now await the winners between Cote d’Ivoire and Algeria in one of Thursday’s quarter-final matches. -
Super Eagles victory against S/Africa confirms Nigeria's progress to Next Level – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Super Eagles for another spectacular outing that has confirmed Nigeria’s progress to the Next Level in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Egypt 2019.
Quoted in a statement by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, the president said: “With a well-deserved victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, the mission of having the trophy in our hands for the fourth time is almost accomplished for the high flying Eagles.” T
The President urged the team and their handlers to remain focused, disciplined and scale the remaining two hurdles to glory.
He affirmed that the crop of players in the national football team represent the resilient and indomitable Nigerian spirit, which must be reflected in all other areas of national life.
President Buhari assured the players that Nigerians are praying for them to fly higher and get to the peak of the tournament, knowing that the taste of victory is sweet and what they have achieved so far is pleasing to Nigerians irrespective of ethnic, religious or political inclination. -
Rohr says VAR delay unsettled Super Eagles
Nigeria’s coach Gernot Rohr could not resist a dig at the VAR system after his team’s win 2-1 over South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday.
He said the time taken to confirm his opponents’ goal had unsettled his team.
The VAR system was introduced at the quarter-final stage and is being used in the competition for the first time.
It made its first significant intervention when it overruled a linesman’s decision to disallow Bongani Zungu’s goal for offside.
“For five minutes we had to wait, goal or no goal, and that was hard for my team,” the German told reporters in Cairo.
“The second goal did not go in for us and then you have seen this free kick, and this VAR decision ——- you never know what can happen with VAR on a free kick.”
Rohr also praised the character of his side who came back from 2-1 down to beat Cameroon 3-2 in the previous round and grabbed a late winner in Wednesday’s match.
“Now we are mentally strong and we were able to come back,” he said. “The attitude of my players was wonderful. Such a good relationship with everyone.”
Rohr recalled when Nigeria were beaten 2-0 by South Africa at home in a qualifier for the tournament two years ago, one of his first games in charge.
“We had a young team but this team continued to work and this result perhaps helped us to beat in the next game Cameroon, who were African champions, 4-0 in the same stadium (in a World Cup qualifier).
“So, we will also learn from this match,” he added. -
AFCON 2019: South Africa not afraid of Nigeria – Mark Fish
Bafana Bafana legend Mark Fish looks back at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) semi-final defeat to Nigeria with regret for a number of reasons.
The winner of the 1996 Afcon was part of the Bafana team that finished with a bronze medal four years later. But for a moment, another Afcon title was on the cards for Bafana when they beat one of the co-hosts, Ghana, in the quarter-finals to march into the last four.
The other hosts, Nigeria, brought Bafana back to reality with a 2-0 defeat in Lagos. Two goals from Tijani Babangida forced Fish and company to fight for third place with Tunisia.
“The euphoria of the stands, the performance of the team – Babangida especially, was electric,” Fish reminisces on the loss to Nigeria. “It was a disappointing result for us because of how well we did to get there.
It was the most disappointing of the three Afcons I played in from a tactical awareness point of view. I remember that in the quarter-finals, Eric Tinkler got sent off and we dropped to four at the back and in midfield.
“I thought because of the way we were setup, that suited us better. I remember going into the semi-final, the coach Trott Moloto called us as senior players and spoke about the game. I thought that the best approach for us would have been 4-4-2.
Yes, a lot of blame was put on me but it wasn’t solely my fault. We had a central defender, Pierre Issa, who didn’t play as a sweeper. He didn’t want to pick up players. It made it difficult for all of us. My memory of that is that we should have gone 4-4-2.”
Almost two decades later, Fish is back in the national team about to take on Nigeria. This time he is a technical team member, roped in as a second assistant by Stuart Baxter with the aim of bringing in a legend who will inspire the players. This team, however, is unlike Fish’s generation.
They don’t fear Nigeria, having beaten them for the first time in a competitive match in the qualifiers of this Afcon. Bafana collected four points from the Super Eagles in their two matches.
“This team has moved on,” Fish said. “Us, I don’t want to say fear because obviously you respect your opponents, but maybe there was an element of fear playing Nigeria in Nigeria. But now we are over that.
The players are more mature. Everyone around the Bafana team looks more unified than it was the case in 2000. The confidence of the players, having played at the qualifiers and beaten them is high, but we have moved from that result and we don’t fear them.”
Like the class of 2000, this Bafana team will go to their clash with Nigeria tomorrow night at Cairo International Stadium on a high after eliminating the hosts, Egypt. But Fish has called for caution.
“The first thing the coach said is that what you achieved against Egypt, well done. Enjoy the moment, but your head must never be in the clouds.” -
Mikel fit to face Bafana Bafana in AFCON quarter-finals tie
John Obi Mikel has returned to full training and is in line to make his Nigeria return in Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations clash with South Africa at Cairo Stadium.
The 2013 Afcon winner is back in contention for Gernot Rohr’s side after recovering from a knee injury which has kept him out of the tournament.
He took part in light training during the team’s recovery session on Sunday morning, seven days after he limped out of Nigeria’s 2-0 defeat to Madagascar.
Mikel missed the Round of 16 tie against Cameroon – with Odion Ighalo sending Nigeria to the last eight his brace.
