  • Super Eagles suspend training boycott

Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Tuesday suspended a training strike over unpaid bonuses at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt following last-minute pleas by the country’s football officials.

The team finally agreed to train in Alexandria, 30 minutes after schedule, after the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) promised to pay a win bonus from their 1-0 victory over Burundi on Saturday, by the end of the week.

NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said “the matter has been resolved”, conceding that funds for the tournament had arrived late.

“The NFF received part of the money meant for the tournament today and is in the process of converting it to dollars to pay the players and officials”, he said.

“The only money they’re owed is the win-bonus for the Burundi match”, he added.

The bonuses were expected to be paid by the NFF after Saturday’s game ended.

Officials close to the team, who spoke under anonymity, told AFP that following reassurances from the NFF “the team captain spoke to the players, asking them to show some understanding after which the team agreed to train”.

The players had earlier boycotted the official pre-match conference.

Other NFF officials disclosed that the players have been paid a daily training allowance of $200-a-player from June 2 to June 30.

Nigeria’s top football body — cash strapped and besieged by corruption trials against its top officials — have struggled to pay athletes their bonuses and allowances at several tournaments.

Both the women’s senior team at the Women’s World Cup in France and the men’s FIFA U20 World Cup team in Poland also embarked on pay strikes to press for their entitlements.

NFF says it has received part of funds budgeted for 2019 AFCON

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Tuesday confirmed receiving part of the money approved by the Federal Government for the participation of some national teams in international competitions.

Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, said in a statement that the approved money included the fund for the Super Eagles’ participation at the ongoing 32nd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He quoted NFF’s Acting President, Seyi Akinwunmi, as saying on Tuesday that the Federation received part of the money on Tuesday morning.

Olajire added that Akinwunmi had also disclosed that NFF had immediately launched the process to convert the sum to U.S. dollars to pay the players their only outstanding entitlement.

Akinwunmi had said this was the win bonus for the match against Burundi, played in Alexandria on Saturday evening, and for subsequent matches.

“We want to specially thank President Muhammadu Buhari for his keen interest in resolving this matter quickly, which has enabled us to receive part of the money in record time.

“We have immediately started the process of converting the money to U.S. dollars at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in order to pay the players the bonus for the win over Burundi three days ago as well as plan for subsequent games.”

Akinwunmi added also that the NFF had on Monday transferred to the players and their officials their camp allowances up to the last day of 2019 AFCON group phase matches.

He had said there was also the fund for the appearance fee for the friendly match against Zimbabwe in Asaba on June 8.

“We have paid these monies through our funds managers, Financial Derivatives Company on Monday.

“The only issue we had was that some of the players did not send their bank accounts and instead authorised the bank to pay their monies to some other individuals. The bank requested clear authorisation for this to happen.

“I was on a telephone discussion with the team captain Mikel Obi this morning and can safely say that all clarifications have been made and the usual cordial relationship and understanding between the players and we the administrators are still intact.

“I have challenged them to go all out and win the trophy, assuring them that their monies all the way to the final are guaranteed.

“It is now for the players to focus on the championship and deliver glory to the nation. I have no doubt of their ability to do that.”

Akinwunmi, who is deputising for NFF President Amaju Pinnick who is fully involved with AFCON’s organisation as its President, also
specially commended the maturity of the team and its leaders.

“The team leaders, including skipper Mikel, deserve commendation, especially for their unflinching focus on the job at hand, which is winning the AFCON trophy,’’ he said.

  • 2019 AFCON: Five things Super Eagles need to do against Guinea

2019 AFCON: Five things Super Eagles need to do against Guinea

Nigeria’s quest for a fourth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy continues in Alexandria, Egypt as the Super Eagles take on Guinea in their second Group B encounter on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles are on top of their group with three points, following a narrow 1-0 victory against tournament debutants Burundi on Saturday.

As 24 teams slug it out in the continent’s most coveted football trophy in its new format, the Super Eagles are definitely one of the favourites to lift the trophy come July 14.

With two of the three countries making their debut in the tournament in Nigeria’s group, it is expected that the Super Eagles make light work of the group stage.

Under the new format, the countries that finish first and second in their group are guaranteed second round slots while the best four of the six third-placed teams also qualify.

The game against Guinea on Wednesday is perhaps the Eagles’ most difficult on paper at the group stage, but in football, anything can happen.

And that much was proven in the 2-2 draw played out by Guinea and Madagascar in the other first round match in the Super Eagles’ group.

As the Super Eagles file out against Guinea on Wednesday with the aim of booking a second round ticket, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) looks at five talking points the coaching crew has to address.

    Captain Mikel Obi’s role

In the game against Burundi, Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi was given an advanced ‘No. 10’ role by Coach Gernot Rohr.

The creative midfielder role is one the former Chelsea player was comfortable with at international level, even when he played in a more defensive position at club level.

However, at 32 years old and making a return to the national team after a stint at England’s second division side Middleborough, the coach should consider a deeper role for Obi against Guinea.

There are even pundits, such as veteran Segun Agbede, who never regard Obi as a number 10.

“Dear Gernot, playing a statuesque Mikel Obi at 10 in @NGSuperEagles, is an exercise in futility. He lacks both the pace and mobility.

“Because he wears the number 10 jersey doesn’t make him a 10.

“Please cease and desist,” Agbede wrote on his Twitter handle.

A younger Obi could have played in that position more comfortably, but Rohr should consider Stock City’s Oghenekaro Etebo for that role while Obi complements Winifred Ndidi in the heart of the midfield.

    Transition between defence and attack

The Super Eagles have always thrived on fast movement, with effective ability to convert defence to attack through the channels.

It was the role Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze were meant to play in the game against Burundi.

However, many football enthusiasts were unpleased with how Chukwueze particularly held on to the ball for too long, thereby denying Paul Onuachu the opportunity to utilize his body against the defence.

Ex-International, Mutiu Adepoju, told NAN after the match against Burundi that transition was an aspect the team should work on before the game against Guinea on Wednesday.

“I commend the boys for a job well done, but going forward I think we need faster transition from defence to midfield and attack.

“We need to have the ability to surprise our opponents and not to be very predictable,” Adepoju said.

    Tactics should depend on opponents

If nothing, the 32nd edition of AFCON in Egypt has so far proved two things:

One, there are no longer minnows in African football and second, to emerge champions, each game should be approached with its own unique tactics.

The game against Burundi is gone and the Super Eagles face a different challenge in Guinea. The technical crew may have to approach Guinea with an entirely different game plan or tweak that from the Burundi game.

    Timely and apt substitutions

So far, Rohr seems to know what substitution to make when he needs to change the game as witnessed in the game against Burundi.

Bitrus Bewarang, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), commended the coach for knowing how to use his substitutions to change the game.

“After a lacklustre first half by the Eagles’ standard where the Burundians even had two clear-cut chances the game changed in the second half.

“The second half was livelier than the first because the team came out more and the substitutions made by the coach proved vital to Nigeria’s victory.

“Gernot Rohr’s substitutions proved to win the match for Nigeria,” he said.

Of course, Bewarang was referring to the introduction of Ahmed Musa and Idion Ighalo.

If the Super Eagles find themselves in a situation whereby the game against Guinea wasn’t going as planned, timely and apt substitutions should be made.

Ighalo has earned his place in starting lineup

25-year-old Paul Onachu came into the national team based on his exploits with his Danish club FC Midtjylland.

Young, hungry and determined, the striker will definitely have his time with the Super Eagles, but sometimes experience and being in the team for so long have their advantages.

That is exactly the case with Ighalo, whose 77th minute strike made the difference against Burundi.

Nothing motivates a striker more in a tournament like AFCON than to be on the scoring sheet in their opening game.

Against Burundi, the Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker did just enough to earn a starting role against Guinea on Wednesday.

  • 2019 AFCON: I didn’t like Akpeyi’s dribble – Rohr

    2019 AFCON: I didn’t like Akpeyi’s dribble – Rohr

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr expressed his displeasure with Daniel Akpeyi’s attempt to dribble in his own box during their opening Africa Cup of Nations(Afcon) match against Burundi.

Akpeyi was handed the no. 1 shirt ahead of Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and he played a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles secure a 1-0 victory on Saturday with key saves.

Despite his heroics between the sticks, Akpeyi nearly cost the three-time African champions a goal with his errors, notably the poor control of a back pass from Ola Aina in the first half.

Following their winning start in Egypt, Rohr said that he is satisfied with the 32-year-old’s overall display and assured that the goalkeeper’s movement will be worked on in training.

“The goalkeeper did not concede a goal which is good for him and for the team, and he stopped a wonderful opportunity in the first half and as you know that the first goal is the most important, so in that situation, he was really very good,” Rohr was quoted as saying by AOI Football .

“Then we know that sometimes there can also be mistakes like what happened when he tried to dribble with the ball. I didn’t like that he did it but we will try to make it better next time.

“But what I saw from him in the last three weeks was really so good in the training sessions that today [Saturday] he was our number 1.”

Nigeria currently lead Group B with three points after their opening game. They are set to face Guinea for their next group fixture at the Alexandria Stadium on Wednesday.

  • Nigeria-Guinea match: Okala, others urge Super Eagles to work harder

Nigeria-Guinea match: Okala, others urge Super Eagles to work harder

Emmanuel Okala, former Green Eagles Goalkeeper, on Monday urged the Super Eagles to work harder in their remaining group phase matches at the ongoing 32nd Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, especially against Guinea.

Okala, a member of the 1980 African Cup of Nations Cup winning squad, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu.

According to him, the Gernot Rohr-tutored team requires resilience and `strong-will’, to beat their Guinean counterparts.

“We want them to win the match and make us smile once again in the country.

“In the last match, I felt their strong stamina, strength and general improvement in the team; but we lacked the finishing in the 18-yard box.

“We keep praying for the national team, since they are already in the tournament, for them to lift the trophy at the end of the day,’’ he said.

Arthur Ebunam, ex-Rangers International midfielder, described the team as lacking `good coordination’ in their play, especially in passing the ball to one another.

Ebunam, who also played for Mighty Jets of Jos and El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, said there was still work to be done in the team for better understanding.

He advised the coach to stop experimenting with players because the real competition is on.

“The Super Eagles are no longer playing qualifying or friendly matches.

“The coach should start the game with the best legs, since the tournament is for real. There should not be experimentation now.

“The national team handlers should not create a scenario where the opponents will hold the team and country to ransom by having early goals,’’ he said.

A football fan, Mr Ifeanyi Okonkwo, called on the Super Eagles to win their next match convincingly and make Nigeria proud in the ongoing competition.

“We want a convincing win in our next match. This is what we expect from the Super Eagles.

“We need early goals and wide goal margin in the ongoing AFCON,’’ Okonkwo, an ardent supporter of Rangers International FC, Enugu, said.

NAN reports that the Super Eagles defeated hard-fighting Burundians by a lone goal on Saturday, while the other Group B opponents, Guinea and Madagascar settled for a 2-2 draw.

Guinea ended their first game on Sunday, June 23, by forcing youthful Madagascar to a 2 – 2 draw.

The AFCON 2019, which kicked off on June 21 with the expanded 24-team and six groups format, will end on July 19.

2019 AFCON: Eagles need faster transition in subsequent games — Adepoju

Mutiu Adepoju, an ex-international, has commended the Super Eagles for their win over Burundi on Saturday, charging them however to employ faster and more coordinated transition in their subsequent games.

Adepoju told the newsmen in Abuja on Saturday after the match that the team could go far in the competition if the right tactics are employed.

The Super Eagles secured a narrow 1-0 win over debutants Burundi in their opening match of the 2019 AFCON, with substitute Odion Ighalo scoring with a cool finish.

Adepoju who maintained that there were no more minnows in African football praised the resilience of the Eagles for picking up the three points.

“You know there are no longer minnows in African football, so we have to respect the Burundi team and others.

“I commend the boys for a job well done. But going forward I think we need faster transition from defence to midfield and attack.

“We need to have the ability to surprise our opponents and not to be very predictable,” he said.

The 1994 AFCON winner said the introduction of Ahmed Musa and Odion Igahlo in the second half changed the game.

He called on Nigerians to continue to support the Eagles so as to bring back the Cup at the end of the tournament.

The Super Eagles will take on West African counterparts Guinea on Wednesday in their next match in the group.

  • Burundi made us suffer – Coach Gernot Rohr

Burundi made us suffer – Coach Gernot Rohr

Though the Super Eagles won their opening match in the Africa Cup of Nations clash with Burundi, coach Gernot Rohr disclosed that Burundi made his team suffer before they scored the lone goal.
He described Burundi as a very difficult opponent for Nigeria.

It took the three-time African champions 77 minutes to break the deadlock at the Alexandria Stadium thanks to a cool finish from Odion Ighalo.

The goal separated the Super Eagles from the Swallows, who were playing their first game at the Afcon finals.

At the end of the game, the 65-year-old coach said that Burundi made his team ‘suffer’ before scoring the only goal in the match.

“It was a very difficult match for us because this team of Burundi is very organised. Olivier – the coach, I know him very well and he has a lot of experience,” Rohr said after the game.

“They also qualified from a tough group that has Gabon, Mali and they come through. We saw the games, they were unbeaten in the qualifiers.

“It was not easy, especially very difficult to score the first goal. If the first goal is not coming quickly, you suffer and you have to work hard to score and to win the matches.

The victory earned the Super Eagles massive praise from the fans, but Rohr is looking forward to another tough match when they face off against Guinea on Wednesday.

“The Nigerian supporters are happy that we won the match, and it’s good to win the first match, it’s never easy,” he continued.

“The second match will also be difficult against a wonderful team of Guinea, and the third one, Madagascar, is nothing to lose. We will try to give our best and I think it’s good to start slowly and we come higher and higher.”

The win moved Nigeria to the summit of Group B with three points after their opening game.

‘I’ll be watching’: Buhari charges Super Eagles to go get Burundi

The Burundian Swallows are in for trouble with Nigeria’s Super Eagles today as they meet in Alexandria in the first match of Group B in the African Cup of Nations.

This is because the Nigerians have been supercharged by President Muhammadu Buhari to play every match for the honour of motherland.

The President urged them to lift the flag of Nigeria high, and reinforce the reputation of the country as football powerhouse on the continent.

“I will be watching, just as millions of Nigerians would also do. You have our solid support, and we will cheer you to victory,” President Buhari said in a statement by Special adviser, Femi Adesina.

Buhari noted that football is a strong unifying force for Nigerians and urged the Super Eagles to provide a soothing balm to the many challenges facing the country, which the government is confronting with everything at its disposal.

“Nigerians are known for their unconquerable spirit. Show this in the group stages, and even beyond. Nothing but lifting of the diadem is good enough for our country,” President Buhari stated.

He also enjoined the Super Eagles to be mindful of fair play, and sportsmanlike conduct, as they strive to return home with the AFCON trophy.

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Super Eagles to play every match for the honour of their motherland as they file out in their first match against Burundi in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019), holding in Egypt.

The President, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday, urged the Eagles to lift the flag of Nigeria high, and reinforce the reputation of the country as a football powerhouse on the continent.

He said: “I will be watching, just as millions of Nigerians would also do.
