    ‘We prayed and fasted in Akwa Ibom for Super Eagles to win’ – Gov Emmanuel

    Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has said that the Super Eagles’ victory on Friday against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon was a “testament” to the power of prayers.

    The Eagles whipped their arch rival, the Lions 4-0, in their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

    “The victory of Super Eagles today against The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon is a testament to the fact that whenever we go on our knees and seek the face of God like we did today during our fasting and prayer session, God will answer our prayer,” Mr. Emmanuel wrote on Facebook, few hours after the match.

    “Congratulations to ‘Akwaibomites’, congratulations to Nigerians. Together we are rising to the faith of our greatness!” the governor added in his comment.

    He also shared the comment on his Twitter handle @MrUdomEmmanuel.

    Buhari salutes Super Eagles for victory over Indomitable Lions

    President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Friday’s impressive win over the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

    According to a statement signed and released by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, the President joins millions of football-loving Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora in applauding the senior men’s football team for their disciplined, skillful and entertaining display against the defending African champions.

    President Buhari, while noting that with the exhilarating victory, Nigeria is on the verge of qualification for the World Cup in Russia 2018, urges the players to sustain the momentum as they approach the crucial second leg of the tie in Yaounde, on Monday.

    The President enjoins Nigerians who always see football as a unifying platform, to continue to pray and support the team to guarantee victory next week and make qualification doubly sure.

    He also commends the Akwa Ibom State Government for its continued support and provision of excellent hosting facilities.

  • Nigeria vs Cameroon: Gov Emmanuel vows to compensate Eagles with $10,000 per goal

    The Akwa Ibom State governor, Udom Emmanuel, has promised to pay the Super Eagles $10,000 for every goal the team score against Cameroon in their 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Friday.

    The governor also redeemed his pledge of $30,000 to the Eagles for their 3-1 win against Algeria in a 2018 World Cup Group B qualifier last year.

    Emmanuel called on Nigerians to support the Eagles with prayers as well go to the Uyo stadium to cheer the team to victory against the Indomitable Lions.

    “You (Eagles) should be able to hold the Lions; I believe the Lions by this time tomorrow (Friday) will not be able to roar. We believe in prayers. We also need your support. You have to do something to ensure that, at least, we project our own to the world.

    “I don’t know how I feel when I hear of some people collecting almost £300m and some of our players are equally talented enough to collect that kind of money. Nobody has the monopoly of sports. Let us also encourage our own. I’ll like to see some of these players there,” he said.

    Cameroun will meet better Eagles – Rohr assures Nigerians

    Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr on Tuesday said that Cameroun would meet a better and experienced Super Eagles in the World Cup qualifying match by Aug. 28.

    Rohr gave the assurance in an interview with the newsmen in Abuja while speaking on way forward for the team.

    He said that Cameroun would not find it easy like South Africa because he was going to field the best legs in Super Eagles.

    ‘’South Africa met an inexperienced and younger Eagles, that is why they won the match.

    ‘’We did not play with our main team, many of our experienced players were not in the match mainly due to injury, but they will be ready for Cameroun,’’ Rohr said.

    The Technical Adviser, who assured Nigerians of victory in the next five matches, sued for total support for the Eagles.

    He said that all hands were on deck to ensure that victory was achieved in the Aug. 28 World Cup campaign against Cameroun.

    According to him, Nigeria still has chances of qualifying; therefore, there is no cause for alarm or panic.

    Rohr expressed confidence in the ability of the Super Eagles to overrun all their opponents in both the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers.

  • Osinbajo approves release of funds for Super Eagles despite disappointing outing against S’Africa

    Nigeria’s Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has approved the release of funds to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), following a meeting with top officials from the Glass House last week.

    The money is to be used to offset bills, as the Super Eagles prepare to take on Cameroon in a crucial 2018 World Cup qualifying double-header in August.

    “The NFF have the cash for the World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon thanks to the generosity of the federal government.

    “The NFF also got the cash for the AFCON qualifier against South Africa and had the Eagles won, they would have been paid their win bonus immediately after the game,” a top official said.

    Nigeria will welcome the Indomitable Lions on August 27 in Uyo, with the reverse game in Limbe four days later.

    The Eagles are top of their qualifying group for the 2018 World Cup with six points from two matches. Cameroon are second on two points, while Zambia and Algeria are on a point each.

    Nigeria were stunned by South Africa’s two second half goals at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

    Super Eagles rise on FIFA Ranking

    The Super Eagles of Nigeria moved up two places to 38th position on the latest FIFA world football ranking released on Thursday.

    The Super Eagles, who were ranked 40th in the world and 5th in Africa last month, overtook Burkina Faso to moved to 4th on the continent behind Egypt, Senegal and 2016 AFCON champions, Cameroon.

    Burkina Faso fell to 7th in Africa.

    The top 10 in the world remain unchanged with Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Chile, Colombia, France, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain retaining their spots.

    FIFA’s latest release comes ahead of a busy month in senior international football, with FIFA World Cup qualifying and the FIFA Confederations Cup set to take centre stage in June.

    The Super Eagles are now ranked the 40th best team in men’s football.

    In the latest ranking by world football governing body, FIFA, Nigeria moved a step further the log and are now the fifth best team in Africa behind Egypt, Senegal, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, who occupy the first, second, third and fourth place respectively.

    Four South American sides make up the top five football teams in the world.

    Brazil is number one, Argentina is in second place, Germany comes third, while Chile and Colombia are fourth and fifth respectively.

  • I will name Super Eagles squad for AFCON 2019 qualifiers by February – Rohr

    Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has revealed he will name his squad for an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in February.

    The draw for the tournament will be held on Thursday in Libreville, Gabon and Nigeria is likely to play their first game of the qualifying series in March.

    I will make my list by the end of February,” Rohr said.

    This will depend on what the players are doing at their clubs.

    Some new players could come like fullback, we have somebody, but it’s too early to speak about that now.”

    Rohr also stated that he was willing to give players from the domestic league more chances.

    I will watch tomorrow’s Super Cup (between Rangers and FC Ifeanyi Ubah) to see if I could see some players in the league,” he said.

    It will be interesting for me to watch this game as I have already watched Ifeanyi Ubah during the Federation Cup final, now I will see the Nigeria champions.”
