AFCON 2023: How we will play Super Eagles – South Africa coach

Hugo Bruce, South African coach, says he will approach the semi-final match against Nigeria differently from Bafana Bafana’s style in their quarter-final game against Cape Verde on Saturday.

Recall goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the hero as South Africa beat Cape Verde 5-3 on penalties following a goalless 120 minutes to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

After an impressive four penalty saves by Williams, Bafana Bafana secured their place in the semi-finals for the first time since 2000 where they will meet Nigeria.

Bruce told newsmen at a post-match conference that the game against Nigeria would be an entirely different ‘kettle of fish’.

“The semi-final match will be different against Nigeria, which has good players like (Ademola) Lookman.

“We will not lose focus. The players will be in good condition, so we need to rest and recover to start our preparation,” he said.

He noted that the pressure of qualifying for the semi-finals for the first time in AFCON made the game tougher, adding that winning the game by penalty shootout wasn’t a fluke.

“When we got to the penalty shootout, it was a special thing for the players, because during training they were scoring them.

“When we have a goalkeeper who stops four penalty kicks, this is not luck but a lot of hard work.

“There was a lot of pressure in the match. Everyone wanted to qualify.

“This match was unlike the previous ones. We did not show the same performance as we had in previous matches,” he said.

He also noted that not many people in South Africa believed in the team, saying that he was proud of what his boys had achieved so far.

“In spite of all the doubts, we believed in it, and the players believed in themselves as well.

“Reaching the semi-finals is in itself a good thing for South African football,” Bruce said.

AFCON 2023: I feel pressure playing for Nigeria – Ademola Lookman

Super of Eagles  of Nigeria forward, Ademola Lookman has revealed that he feels pressured playing for his country.

Lookman is Nigeria’s current highest goal scorer at the tournament  with three goals after putting two past Cameroon in the second round  and scoring another against quarter-final opponent Angola to reach the height.

The 26 year-old is already in the books for the tournament’s most valuable player owing to his heroics so far at the competition.

However, Lookman insists it is not easy to deliver for the three-time African champions.

“I feel the pressure wearing this [Nigeria] shirt,” Lookman said as quoted by the BBC.

“Every single time I put on the jersey, that’s just what comes with being a Nigerian and playing for the country, so I’m proud to do that, to take that responsibility.”

AFCON semi-finals: Super Eagles told to fine-tune midfield

Ebere Amaraizu, former board member and South-East Director, Nationwide League One (NLO), has urged the Super Eagles to fine-tune their midfield before their semi-final encounter in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Amaraizu, who said this in an interview on Saturday, stressed the Super Eagles should not rest on their oars but focus on the semi-final encounter.

“Super Eagles should make haste to fine-tune their midfield and make it flow well with its number 10 (Iwobi). Then Zaidu in number 3 should be made to be more clinical.

“With this and more, the Super Eagles have all that it takes to overcome any opponent and bring the trophy to Nigeria,” he said.

He, however, praised the Super Eagles for an impressive encounter with the Angolans, which they won 1-0.

He said: “The Super Eagles coach and squad performed exceptionly well in their quarter-final encounter. The runs from the wing created the space and chance for our goal.

“The Angolans tried to give good account of themselves but nevertheless were overwhelmed by Super Eagles’ technical and tactical disposition.”

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles will be more focused – Ola Aina

Nottingham and Super Eagles wing-back, Ola Aina, has assured teeming Nigerian fans that the team will be more focused when they play either Cape Verde or South Africa in the semi-final of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Aina made this comment during the post match conference after Nigeria’s slender win over the Palangras Negras of Angola.

Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone shortly after the game in Ivory Coast, the Nottingham Forest star also admitted that the Palancas Negras proved a tough nut to crack for Nigeria.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game; I think so far it has been one of the hardest we have played just because we have had a lot of games where physically the boys have put a lot in,” Aina said.

On the expectations for the semifinals, the former Chelsea player added: “We are happy and looking forward to the semifinal. Full focus on that game now and hopefully we can get the result we want again.”

  • My assessment of the Super Eagles – By Tony Nwaka

My assessment of the Super Eagles – By Tony Nwaka

    By Tony Nwaka

The Nigerian senior football team, the Super Eagles, is on the brink of history in Ivory Coast. They’ve reached the semifinals of the 2023 AFCON competition by defeating Angola 1-0. Just two more victories and they will be crowned the new African champions. I have attempted below an overview of the team, starting with the head coach, Jose Peseiro.

PESEIRO: The Portuguese has succeeded within 30 days to reverse the negative opinions of Nigerians about his performance. His tactical innovation of a fluid 6-man defensive formation is bringing the desired victories, though with narrow margins. Yes, the current team is still a work in progress, but, at least, we can confidently say that he is building his core structure around Nwabali, Ekong, Ajayi, Aina, Bassey, Zaidu, Onyeka, Iwobi, Lookman, Simon, Osimhen. Remember that it took Nigeria’s most successful coach, Clemence Westerhof, five years to perfect his formidable arsenal of Rufai, Eguavoen, Okechukwu, Okafor, Iroha, Oliseh, Okocha, Amunike, Amokachi, Yekini, and Finidi. Will Peseiro get better with time?

NWABALI: A great discovery. His confidence between the posts is phenomenal and his saves are astonishing. Just think of that 4th minute breathtaking goal-line block that would have given Angola the lead. His commanding presence reminds me of such greats as Chilavert of Paraguay, Shilton of England, Buffon of Italy, Nkono of Cameroon, and, of course, our own Rufai. Nwabali will go places. Strangely, our scouts didn’t notice him all these years.

AINA: A delight to watch. The way he floats gracefully up and down the right flank is exemplary, just like what Marcelo, the Real Madrid and Brazilian player, was doing on the left side. But against Angola, Aina looked somewhat withdrawn. Wasn’t as expressive as he’d been. Could it be he was tired? Or was it just a tactical instruction from the coach to be less adventuresome? All the same, he’s a pleasant bundle of skills and technique.

BASSEY: A dogged fighter. Reminds me of our Benedict Iroha and the Brazilian Roberto Carlos, though not with their lightning offensive forays. His uncompromising defensive solidity is also reminiscent of two Italian legends of catenaccio; Gattuso and Gentile. Indeed, Claudio Gentile so frustrated the youthful Maradona at Espana ’82, that the Argentinian derisively called him a caveman. But there’s something I noticed in the Angolan match that Bassey would have to work on; his temperament. His furious outburst against unfavourable decisions could be his undoing and might be collectively damaging in crucial situations. Aside from that, Bassey is simply another German machine.

EKONG: Rock of Gibraltar. An irrepressible warhorse. The central pillar of the Nigerian defence. I thought the absence of Balogun, with whom he formed the famed Oyibo Wall, would hinder his performance at this AFCON. But his defensive excellence has elevated him to the planes of the Italian Cannavaro, Cameroonian Rigobert Song, and Spanish Sergio Ramos. Thankfully, Ekong has been so professional in his tackles that he hasn’t drawn those notorious red cards that blighted the proficiency of Sergio Ramos. Ekong is simply superb.

AJAYI: Noiselessly efficient. It would take an expert eye to note the indispensable role of this inconspicuous monster. Indeed, calm waters run deep. He’s the quintessential libero and sweeper blended in one indefinable package. His types are rare. The closest recollection I have of his semblance is probably our Yisa Shofoluwe, whom the legendary Ernest Okonkwo nicknamed the Dean of Defence. Looks harmless, yet tremendously impregnable. Ajayi seems not to be there until you cross his path only to discover an impenetrable fortress.

ZAIDU: A brilliant defender. But he is lacking awfully in offensive technique. He appears to be one of the two weak links in Peseiro’s assemblage. While his defensive qualities are beyond doubt, something has to be done about his contribution to our attack force. If he does not improve on his performance when the team is pushing forward, then he may have to be dropped in our post-AFCON matches, and let’s experiment with the pair of Onyeka and Ndidi. Or he’ll be strictly instructed to always pass the ball and never cross the centre line. Let him just focus on his defensive duties, for which he has undeniable competence.

ONYEKA: An impressive replacement for Wilfred Ndidi. He has demonstrated a remarkable capacity at the gate of our defence line. But he still needs to sharpen his support for our strike force so that he can be admitted into the elite class of the Sunday Olisehs, Ogenyi Onazis, John Obi Mikels, Blockbuster Alloysius Atuegbus, and Frenchman Ngolo Kante. Onyeka is a footballer of boundless potential. But he appeared slightly off-form against Angola.

IWOBI: An intelligent attacking midfielder. Although lacking the genius of his uncle, Jay Jay Okocha, Iwobi seems to be the only spark in our creative midfield department. But, I’m sorry to say this, he is the other weak link we have in our current formation (Zaidu is the first). It looks like Iwobi is not able to sufficiently adapt to Peseiro’s innovative formation. He does not track back in support of the defence, unlike Moses Simon who does so effortlessly. And, most times you find Iwobi loitering idly by when he should be chasing the opponent. I want to believe he will return to his brilliant self. I mean, you only need to recall his exploits at Arsenal, Everton, Fulham, and the sublime combination he once had with Iheanacho, to know that Iwobi still carries that creative talent in Jay Jay’s bloodline.

SIMON: The pocket dynamite of the Super Eagles. Fast, inventive and precise, you undermine his small stature to your peril; just like Bebeto of Brazil. I wished he had released the ball to Lookman on his second brilliant run. That would have given us the second goal against Angola. No defence can stop Moses Simon on a good day, and he seems to have peaked at this AFCON. His pacy combination with Osimhen and Lookman has created a lethal attacking threat for opposing teams. And his ability to fly back to support the defence distinguishes him from the pack. Simon combines the agility of Emanuel Amunike with the inventiveness of Humphrey Edobor.

LOOKMAN: The archetypal representation of vision, pace, power, and precision. Did you notice that his goals were one touch? No trapping, no repositioning, no hesitation. He hits the ball as it gets to him and, boom! The net is already shaking. If you blend the precision of Filippo Inzaghi, the vision of Kanu Nwankwo, and the creativity of Austin Jay Jay Okocha, with the grit of Daniel ‘The Bull’ Amokachi, there is Ademola Lookman. A prodigious talent who knows the right place to be at the right time. Lookman might just grow into the African Messi.

OSIMHEN: A tireless fighter with tremendous predatory instincts. His goalscoring ability may have failed him at critical junctures, but his presence alone has stampeded many defences to the graveyard. Yes, he may not have been hammering in the desired goals, but his excellent teamwork has remained a driving force for the Super Eagles. Defenders know he is one of the most dangerous attackers in the world. Incidentally, as they focus on him, Lookman and Simon would be doing the damage. That is how potent the Peseiro boys are at this AFCON.

And when you look at the bench and see that we still have Kelechi Iheanacho of Leicester, Samuel Chukwueze of AC Milian, Terem Moffi of Nice, and Bruno Onyemaechi of Boavista; when you see that the dreaded big teams like Senegal, Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Tunisia, and Algeria have all fallen by the wayside, then you’ll realise that AFCON 2023 may have been ordained for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles dedicate win against Angola to late Okwaraji

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dedicated their 1-0 victory against the Palancas Negras of Angola in the quarterfinals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to the memory of late Samuel Okwaraji.

Okwaraji, a Nigerian international, slumped and died while playing in a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola in Lagos.

In celebration to their victory against Angola at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, the team wrote on its X handle that the triumph was in memory of the late legend.

“Today’s victory over Angola is a poignant reminder of the adamant spirit of Nigerian football.

“As we celebrate this triumph, we also honor the memory of Late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who tragically left us while playing against Angola 35 years ago.

“His passion for the game and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Samuel Okwaraji, your legacy lives on,” it said.

Nigeria will play the winners of the match between South Africa and Cape Verde in the semi-final.

Why I’m in Abidjan – Obi Cubana

Nigerian businessman, Obinna Iyiegbu, also known as Obi Cubana, says he is in Abidjan, the capital of Cote D’Ivoire to motivate the Super Eagles of Nigeria to win the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Obi Cubana, who was at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, for Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Angola in the quarter-final of the competition told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abidjan on Saturday that Nigeria has raised the bar in football.

“You know we are lifting the cup, that is why we are here, we are here to lift the spirit. I’m so proud, they keep getting better game by game.

“I’m happy because in the same spirit of unification, we are going to lift this cup to make Nigeria proud,” he said.

According to him, no nation is better than Nigeria in the competition hence the reason  he feels the Super Eagles will win the 2023 AFCON for the fourth time in history.

“Who else is playing in this competition?, we can’t go home without winning this cup, congratulations to Nigerians,” he  said.

Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw in its first game against Equatorial Guinea, dispatched host, Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire, 1-0 in the second game, and a 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau in the last Group B match.

The three-time African champions, defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-0 in the round of 16 and beat the Palacas Negras of Angola 1-0 in the quarter-final on Friday, Feb. 2.

Nigeria will play the winner between Cape Verde and South Africa in the sem-final of the competition on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Bouake .

AFCON 2023: I was undecided to give pass to Lookman – Simon

Super Eagles and FC Nantes of France winger, Moses Simon, said he was undecided either to pass the ball to Victor Osimhen or score himself before passing it to Ademola Lookman for the winning goal.

Simon provided an assist for Nigeria’s 1-0 win over the Palancas Negras of Angola on Friday, in the quarter-final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Benue-born player disclosed this at the post-match news conference on Friday in Abidjan.

“I was undecided if I should pass to Victor Osimhen, go inside and shoot or find Ademola Lookman, “he said.

“It was either pass the ball to Victor or I score, or pass to Lookman but at this moment, you don’t need to be selfish, we just need to feed them to score and I am really happy he utilises the chance.

“I feel really happy, the most important thing is the victory, you could be the man of the match and lose,” Simon said.

Simon who won the Man of the Match award, said he was happy not because he won the award, but because the  Eagles progressed to the semi-final of the competition.

He said who scores in a match doesn’t interest them anymore but winning the match was much more important than putting pressure on one person to score.

Nigeria played out a 1-1 draw in its first game against Equatorial Guinea, dispatched host, Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire, 1-0 in the second game, and a 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau in the last group B match.

The three-time African champions, defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 2-0 in the round of 16 to set a date with the Palacas Negras of Angola in the quarter-final and recorded another 1-0 win.

Nigeria will play the winner between Cape Verde and South Africa in the semifinal of the competition on Wed. Feb. 6, in Bouake.
