Two previously injured  Super Eagles of Nigeria players, Alhassan Yusuf and Stand-in captain, Williams Troost-Ekong have returned to team training ahead of Saturday’s round of 16 game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.

The duo trained fully with their teammates at the Police College in Cocody, Abidjan, on Wednesday night.

Recall that Troost-Ekong missed the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory against the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau on Monday due to a knee injury.

The PAOK Salonica centre-back was replaced in the starting line-up by Kenneth Omeruo.

Yusuf sustained a thigh injury in Nigeria’s opening game against Equatorial Guinea and have since missed two games.

The game was his first competitive appearance for the Super Eagles.

The Royal Antwerp of Belgium player missed Nigeria’s last two games against Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau due to the setback.

Yusuf will play a part when Super Eagles confront the Cameroonians on Saturday for a quarter-final ticket.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles tipped to win trophy

The head coach of the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau, Baciro Cande has expressed his belief that Nigeria’s Super Eagles has what it takes to win the title.

Recall that Nigeria earned a place in the Round of 16 after defeating the Djurtus at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on Monday night.

Djurtus defender, Opa Sangante’s own goal separated both teams on the night.

The Guineans exited the competition without recording a win and scored twice in three games.

The West Africans are also yet to win a game at the AFCON finals.

Cande, who masterminded Guinea-Bissau’s victory against Nigeria in the qualifiers has backed the Super Eagles to go all the way.

‘”Nigeria have a good team, a lot of quality players including Victor Osimhen who is the Africa’s best player,” Cande said during his interaction with the media after the game.

“It is a team I know very well and I believe they will go far in this competition.

“I believe they can win it. They are now among the favourites.”

The Super Eagles will meet the Indomitable lions of Cameroon at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Saturday, January 27th.

  • AFCON 2023: Nigerian fans call on Cameroon coaching crew to field Onana against Super Eagles

AFCON 2023: Nigerian fans call on Cameroon coaching crew to field Onana against Super Eagles

Nigerians on social media have jokingly called on the Cameroon coaching crew to give  Andre Onana  a chance to man the goal post when the indomitable Lions Cameroon face the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

The question posted to the Cameroonian FA came after it was confirmed that the Indomitable Lions will be the Super Eagles’ opponents in the Round of 16 following the five-time Champions 3-2 win victory over The Gambia.

Recall that the Man United’s goalkeeper Onana was benched during the last group C  encounter between Cameroon and Gambia.

The 27-year-old has been the subject of trolls and criticism since signing for Man United in the Summer after several howlers in goal for the English giants.

Taking to social media to react to the fixture, Nigerian football fans wished Onana will be fielded in the clash with Cameroon as they see it as an advantage for the Super Eagles attack led by reigning Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen.

@SireNoble wrote, “Make Onana play this match against Nigeria, I want to check something.”

@Eazilino said, “An appeal to Cameroon to play Onana against Nigeria on Saturday, we have a surprise for Him.”

@IbkSports tweeted, “Petition to start Andre Onana against the Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday.”

AFCON 2023: How struggling Cameroon set up round of 16 tie against Super Eagles of Nigeria

Five-time champions Cameroon lived up to their billing Tuesday in Bouake with a never-say-die display to advance to the round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Indomitable Lions had looked down and out of contention in their Group C match day 3 fixture, especially after one draw from two earlier games and trailing 1-2.

But they still mustered enough from their reservoir to score two late goals to beat The Gambia 3-2 and advance as group runners-up to book a date with old rivals Nigeria.

They did take the lead in this game in the 56th minute through Karl-Toko Ekambi to look sure for third place and possible qualification as one of the best losers.

But goals from Ablie Jallow (72nd minute) and Ebrima Colley (85th minute) turned the game round for a The Gambia lead.

However, an unfortunate streak of events soon swung the situation back in Cameroon’s favour as James Gomez pushed the ball into his side’s net two minutes later.

With Cameroon now buoyed by the own goal which drew them level, the Indomitable Lions surged forward.

They were rewarded with the winning goal in the first minute of added time by Christopher Wooh for a 3-2 ending.

Cameroon thus moved into second place behind group winners Senegal who beat Guinea 2-0 in the group’s other match.

They displaced Guinea on goals scored after both sides had ended with four points each from three matches, and the same goals difference.

The Indomitable Lions will now meet Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Saturday in a round of 16 match at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

Troost-Ekong sustained the injury in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over hosts Cote d’Ivoire last week.

Kasimpasa defender, Kenneth Omeruo replaced him in the starting line-up against Guinea-Bissau

“I am getting better, I am looking to be back in training on Wednesday, ‘” he told reporters.

  • AFCON 2023: Nwabali opens up on replacing Uzoho as Nigeria’s number one goalie

AFCON 2023: Nwabali opens up on replacing Uzoho as Nigeria’s number one goalie

Stanley Nwabali, the Super Eagles goalkeeper at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, has dispelled insinuation that he is now Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper.

The Chippa United FC of South Africa goalkeeper said this on Tuesday in Abidjan.

Nwabali said he got an opportunity to represent his country, adding that he would deliver whenever he got the nod to play.

“I am still not seeing myself as number one; I always say this. I only have an opportunity and I just want to play and give my best,” Nwabali said.

He also said that he was not under any pressure while in goal for the Super Eagles but was rather happy with his performance so far in the competition.

Nwabali, who was favoured ahead of Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has so far kept two clean sheets in the three games the Super Eagles have played so far in the AFCON.

He also appealed to Nigeria’s football fans to be calm as the goals would soon start coming to the delight of all.

“For me, the goals will come when you have someone like Victor Osimhen; for me we are not worried about goals, but about the three points. And now we have qualified.

“Monday’s win is a nice feeling for me and the team,” Nwabali said.

Recall that the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated their counterparts from Guinea Bissau 1-0 to qualify for the next round of the competition.

They also got seven points from available nine to finish second on the log behind group leaders, Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea, who also have seven points from three matches, are with a better goals difference than the Nigerian senior national male team.

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles likely round of 16 opponent known

The Super Eagles of Nigeria finished as group A runners-up after  their 1-0 win over the Djurtus of Guinea Bissau at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

Opa Sangante’s own goal made the difference in the last group A game  for the Super Eagles.

However, despite the victory, Jose Peseiro’s men finished as second behind Equatorial Guinea, who hammered hosts Ivory Coast 4-0.

This means Nigeria will face the team that finishes in second place in Group C.

The teams likely to finish second are either Guinea Conakry or the indomitable lions of Cameroon.

Senegal currently top of Group C with six points, while Guinea are second with four points. Cameroon have one point and Gambia have lost all their fixtures so far.

Super Eagles will play its round of 16 games on Saturday 27th of January at the stade Felix Houghpouet Boigny, Abidjan.

  • AFCON 2023: Peseiro opens up on Super Eagles poor goal scoring form

AFCON 2023: Peseiro opens up on Super Eagles poor goal scoring form

Super Eagles of Nigeria’s Coach, Jose Peseiro, has said that his team was keeping the goals for the next round of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Portuguese said this on Monday in Abidjan during his post-match news conference after a scrappy 1-0 win over Guinea Bissau in the last group A match.

The Super Eagles coach said he was happy with the 1-0 win while congratulating Equatorial Guinea for topping the table.

He said his team wasted many scoring chances but claimed that they were keeping the goals for the next stage of the competition.

Peseiro explained that he was not afraid, or even care, about Nigeria’s next opponent in the round of 16 as he was focused on every game.

“Today, we played very good football but we missed scoring chances which is not good for us.

“Our striker, Victor Osimhen, was not at his best but I’m happy we are through to the next stage.

“I want to congratulate Equatorial Guinea for leading the group with seven points after scoring many goals. I also congratulate my team for making it to the next round.

“Today’s match was a tough one; we created four opportunities but we couldn’t convert them. But I’m still happy we progressed to the next stage.

“I believe we kept our goals for the next round; we will definitely work on our finishing ahead of our next match.

“For the next match, if you score goals you proceed to the next round,” he said.

Meanwhile, Guinea Bissau handler Baciro Candé has said that they would continue to learn after their defeat against Nigeria.

“We will continue to learn as we played good football today. This tournament is full of surprises for all of us. This is a great competition with great learning opportunities and I believe we shall do better next time.

“Our first match was different from the second match and today’s match was different from our last match. I think our players should be congratulated and should be praised for their commitment and willingness to fight.

“In the matches we played, we showed we have a brilliant future; in three to four years, our team will be more impactful,” he said.

Super Eagles’ goal scoring lethargy should not worry Nigerians – Owolabi

Meanwhile, former Green Eagles forward Felix Owolabi says the Super Eagles’ failure to score many goals at the ongoing AFCON is not as important as getting wins.

Owolabi, while reflecting on the Super Eagles’ qualification for the knockout stage of the competition, disclosed  winning matches was very important.

Recall the Super Eagles on Monday qualified for the ongoing 2023 AFCON’s next round after beating the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau 1-0 at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

They could only secure the match’s maximum three points, which were necessary for a smooth passage to the knockout stage, courtesy an own goal by Djurtus’ defender Opa Sangante.

He diverted the ball into his own net in a bid to stop an unmarked Victor Osimhen after 36 minutes of play.

However, Owolabi who played for both Nigeria and the former IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan stilk commended the Super Eagles for a brave fight to qualify for the next round.

“In a game of 90 minutes, what people are expecting is the outcome, with the question ‘who won?’ This is because the side with the highest number of goals will be credited as the winners.

“If for any reason an opposing side scored an own goal, it is because of pressure and in the match, even if there was no own goal, we had players like Osimhen and others who could have scored.

“The own goal is counted in our favour, not minding who scored. What is important is who is the winner. But it is true that we are short of goal scoring abilities,” he said.

Owolabi however acknowledged that the Eagles qualified from the group stage as a result of hard work and the fact they mounted pressure on their opponents.

“It could have been either way,” he said.

Owolabi who had 35 international appearances for the Nigerian senior national team also added that he was happy with the progression of the team at the ongoing AFCON.

“What is important to me is that I am happy about what is going on in the team, that they are gradually getting their steps right. It is true that they did not start well.

“So far, they scored a goal in their first match which they drew. But then, they beat hosts Cote d’Ivoire which is a triumphant victory through a penalty kick. Now have seven points, which is a good record.

“For me as a former footballer, an administrator and a coach, the team is trying to pick up gradually.

“Because, come to think of it. What would it have been if we had been scoring, but had been losing our games and failed to qualify?

“The level of preparedness of the team was high, and there is nothing bad in advising the team to improve on the goal scoring abilities.

“We need more goals however, because they will determine how far we will go,” he stated.
