The West Africans were dominant in the game but were wasteful in front of goal.

Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen and Zaidu Sanusi missed good chances in the game to put the Eagles ahead and secure maximum points for the team.

“I’m not happy with the draw. I’m sad, and my players are sad. We are all sad because we deserved to beat our opponent,” the Portuguese told a press conference.

“It’s normal to miss chances in football. I hope next time we’ll create chances and score more goals. We played well and pushed our opponent back. I just hope we can maintain this same attitude in our subsequent games.”

Nigeria’s next game at the AFCON 2023 finals is against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday.

AFCON: If we continue to play like today, no team will beat Super Eagles – Peseiro

Coach Jose Peseiro says if the goal-shy Super Eagles continue to play the way they did against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday in Abidjan, no team will beat Nigeria at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He said this on Sunday while reacting to the 1-1 draw with the Syli Nationale of Equatorial Guinea at the post-match conference.

The Portuguese said he was disappointed with the result of the match because he deserved nothing but the maximum three points at stake.

Worried by the wastefulness of the Eagles, the coach said he was doing everything possible in training and personally with individual players to improve their goal-scoring chances.

Asked about the status of Alhassan Abdullahi, he said the player had not been checked properly as at post-match conference but expressed the hope that his is not seriously injured.

“We have many and clear opportunities, I think we deserve to beat Guinea.

“I am sad about the result but not about the capacity of my players; no player missed a goal because he wants to miss but it is difficult sometime,” Peseiro said.

The wasteful Eagles squandered several scoring chances against the low-rated Equatorial Guinea in Abidjan, to the surprise of its teeming home supporters.

The Super Eagles will face the host, Elephants of Cote D’Ivoire in the second match of the competition on Jan. 18 in Abidjan.

In separate interviews after the 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea, some of the fans described the performance of the team as unconvincing.

The fans also blamed the current African Footballer of the year, Victor Osimhen for the 1-1 draw against lowly rated Equetorial Guinea after he missed several opportunities to score.

Victor Ozoigbo, a fan of the Nigerian team, said the team’s performance was far from convincing and lacked commitment.

“The team is ordinary, and to me I don’t see them going far and that will be a big shame to Nigeria,” he said.

Also speaking, Chinedu Eze, said he was far from impressed by the team’s display against Equatorial Guinea.

“This is the worst team we have produced for nation’s cup. So, to me they are not going anywhere,” he said.

However, a female fan, Ngozi Udegbunam, said she was not discouraged by the result of the game, hoping that the team will learn from their mistakes and bounce back.

“It is just the first game and they should not be judged by just the first game.

“In a tournament, teams improve with matches. So, I am convinced that the team will improve with more matches,” she said.

Udegbunam urged the team’s handlers to go back to the drawing board to identify the mistakes and correct them before the next match.

AFCON 2023: Edu, Osimhen score as Super Eagles share spoils with Equatorial Guinea

Nigeria’s Super Eagles could only manage a draw in their opening group A encounter with the Nzalang National of Equatorial Guinea.

In the 38th minute, Equatorial Guinea Midfieder, Ivan Edu Salvador latched on to a through pass right inside the Super Eagles box and wasted no time before sending a low drive shot towards Super Eagles goalie, Stanley Nwabili who stood still and watched the ball land into the net.

However, just a minute after, Ademola Lookman made a dazzling move on the left side and sent a cross that beat Equatorial Guinea goalie, Jesus Lazarus  and into the waiting head of African footballer of the year, Victor Osimhen for the Super Eagles Equalizer.

The first half ended 1-1 with both team scoring each other few minutes apart.

Upon resumption of second half, both teams tried to pressure each other on the counter  but  all efforts from both sides  couldn’t produce a goal.

Although, the clearest opportunity fell to Osimhen in the 72nd minute when Alex Iwobi sent a through pass across to him,  but the Napoli number 9 fluffed the opportunity to put Nigeria in the lead and secure all three points for the West Africans.

AFCON 2023: Eagles promise to defeat Equatorial Guinea in tournament opener

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea will conclude the first matches of Group A of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Cote d’Ivoire when both nations clash at the brand-new Stade Alassane Ouattare in Ebimpe, outside Abidjan, on Sunday.

Matches between both nations have been few and far between, but Nigerians continue to relish a double over the neighbours to the south in qualification matches for the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals, when Joseph Yobo scored the only goal of the encounter in Malabo, and the Eagles then soared to a 4-0 win at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

On Saturday, Nigeria captain Ahmed Musa told thenff.com after the pre-match press conference that the Super Eagles have their eyes on the three points and have no apologies for their aspiration.

“It is always interesting to play in the Africa Cup of Nations. I was a champion in 2013, same as (defender Kenneth) Omeruo. However, the rest of the team want to have that feeling of what it means to win the Africa Cup of Nations. Everyone is geared towards making a statement.

“It is not going to be a picnic. The teams in our group, including Equatorial Guinea that we play tomorrow, are strong and ambitious as well. It is for us to go all out for the three points in each of our games, and then take it from there in the knock-out rounds. We will take it one match at a time.”

Nigeria’s campaign is woven around the aphoristic ‘Let’s Do It Again’ mantra, which was launched moments after their qualification for the finals, and is designed to galvanise and motivate the group to repeat the triumphs of 1980, 1994 and 2013, and also mobilise football-passionate Nigerians to support and encourage the group to action.

    This year’s final tournament is Nigeria’s 20th appearance, having made her debut in 1963, and then appeared at the 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2019 and 2021 finals.

The competition is also holding in the country where Nigeria reached the Final on away ground for the first time, losing to an experienced and battle-hardened Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in the Ivorian capital.

Nigeria remains the country with the most podium appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, having in addition to wins in 1980, 1994 and 2013, finished as runners-up in 1984, 1988, 1990 and 2000, and picked up the bronze medals in 1976, 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2019, making for a total of 15 podium appearances in 20 finals.

Commentators continue to fret about a contention of lack of steel in midfield and perceived weakness in sectors of the defence, but Coach José Peseiro was bullish at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“I believe in my team. Every team has what you may call frail areas, but the important thing is for the players to play for one another. We are positive.”

Afterwards, he told thenff.com: “It is a 90-minute affair and it is always about who wants a win most. I have a group that has determination and discipline, flair and steel, and we believe we can go all the way in this tournament.”

Equatorial Guinea’s senior national team is known as Nzalang Nationale (National Thunder), but Musa said the Super Eagles will fly above any thunder strikes or claps the neighbours-to-the-south may be planning for Sunday.

“We are ready. This is a group that loves to compete, and we will give this match, and this competition generally, our very best.”
