Voter apathy trailed Saturday’s supplementary election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ebonyi.

The supplementary elections are taking palace in some constituencies in the seven affected LGAs in Ebonyi, including Abakaliki, Afikpo North, Afikpo South, Ezza North, Ezza South, Ikwo and Ivo.

The election is being conducted in Ikwo to elect the representative for Ikwo North constituency in Ebonyi House of Assembly.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the elections inconclusive in the areas due to violence and irregularities.

In Ndiogadoshi playground, polling unit 017 ward 02 in Ikwo Local Government Area, NAN reports that INEC officials arrived with materials at 9:25 a.m.

In Ugbodo village hall and Olua playground, INEC Officials were present but voter turnout was low.

An INEC official, who spoke in anonymity, told NAN that accreditation was on going smoothly but worried by the apathy among voters.

“The BVAS is working well and accreditation is ongoing,” the official added.

Some eligible voters cited indifference among other things, as reason for their lack of interest in the process.

Mrs. Joy Nwanchor, a trader, said she could not have interest any more after the general elections.

“The voting is just a waste of time and energy because the votes do not count in anyway in this country, Nigeria. So, no need for me queueing for voting,” Nwanchor stated.

Another voter, Mr Sunday Chukwu, also expressed worry over the election processes, pointing out that there was need to revamped electoral body if we want to have credible and reliable elections in the country.

“I cannot go out because the last elections were not encouraging. Whether I vote or not a winner will emerge,” Chukwu added.

Nigeria holds supplementary elections today across 24 states

Supplementary elections for governorship, national, and state assembly supplementary elections will take place today Saturday 15th April 2023, in 24 states across the country.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Aishatu Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, is in a close race with the current governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Fintiri.

This is the closest any female candidate has come to clinching the number one seat in any state of the country and many believe she stands a good chance of becoming the first woman to be elected governor of a state, despite the religious and cultural biases that have long stood against women in contests for power in Nigeria.

In Kebbi North, a total of 13,243 voters in 23 PUs are eligible to participate in the exercise, just as in Sokoto East, there are 87,138 eligible voters in 169 PUs. Rivers Rerun: APC rejects INEC’s supplementary election results

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has rejected Etche State Constituency and Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency rerun election results declared by the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that INEC on Sunday declared Jerome Eke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the concluding election into Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in Rivers.

According to a statement by the Rivers State APC Chairman, Davies Ikanya, the party was taken aback when it was reported that the National Electoral Commissioner in charge of Bayelsa, Edo and Rivers states, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu,‎ had ordered that the incomplete results be declared despite the earlier declaration by the two Returning Officers on Saturday at Okehi that the elections were inconclusive.

The statement reads in part: “The APC vehemently rejects the results as declared today (Sunday) at the State INEC Office in Port Harcourt. This action by INEC runs counter and contradictory to earlier announcement on Saturday by the aforementioned Returning Officers who are the duly empowered persons to make such declarations.

What INEC did today is a rape on democracy and the APC will surely resist it with every legal window available to it. INEC can only do what it did today because Gov. Nyesom Wike has, as usual, generously compromised key officials of INEC in Rivers State.

The APC notes that despite the general outcry concerning Gov. Nyesom Wike’s interference in the electoral process, the governor physically held hostage a Returning Officer to force him announce results in a manner unbecoming of a governor. We condemn this and call on INEC leadership and security agencies to investigate this unfortunate incidence.

We recall that this same compromised INEC in Rivers State embarked on the now infamous 2015 elections which is unarguably the worst election in the annals of Nigeria. During the December 10, 2016 rerun that followed, INEC continued to exhibit unwarranted contradictions and unwholesome mishandling of the process which resulted in the further rescheduling of the rerun elections for Etche State Constituency and Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency. Sadly, INEC has, once again, bungled it.”
