UPU reacts over Oborevwori’s victory at Supreme Court

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) Worldwide has congratulated Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on his victory at the Supreme Court on Friday.

Speaking to journalists at a Press Conference held at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Okere, Warri, Delta State on Sunday, President General of UPU, Chief Ese Gam while congratulating Governor Oborevwori, said; “the storm is over”.

The UPU also appealed to the opposition to sheath their swords, join hands and support Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led government to move the State forward.

According to him, “I use this opportunity to appeal and implore all our other sons from other political parties particularly the APC, SDP and Labour Party to come together and let’s reason under the UPU body so that we can be better equipped to assist our son and Executive Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.”

The UPU also congratulated the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Labour Party, LP and the Social Democratic Party, SDP and others who contested the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

Chief Gam said since the election of the incumbent governor, Urhobo nation has been in tentacles. It has been so tensed, very disturbing. The most disturbing part of it, is that all the contending forces are all Urhobo sons. That’s the most disturbing part of it was not a fight between Urhobo ethnic body and any other nationality in Delta State. It was more or less an in-house fight.

“As a matter of fact, the UPU, Urhobo Progress Union, so many things had in mind, were put on hold after consultation with some stakeholders particularly, the traditional rulers.

“Now, I can say confidently that the storm is now over. If the storm is over, we can say too that this press conference is geared towards letting Urhobo nation to know that the cacophony or voices have been collapsed at this particular time.

“We now have a governor on record for four years, God willing, for eight years. If we cannot as an Urhobo body come together, get united in other to move Delta State forward, history will not forgive us.

“Why I say this is because the incumbent governor from the report sheet we are receiving started by hitting the ground running. All these stories about Julius Berger coming to Delta State are stories we never heard before.

“Only about two days ago, somebody said on Facebook that the present governor has not borrowed money to do anything. These are the things we never seen. So, no matter what happens, like I tell people except the Lord build, those who build, build in vein.

“This particular governor is branded and built by God. If not, like he said, he suffered 38 pre-election and post election cases. What can be more difficult than that?

“Having said that, I congratulate the governor. I congratulate all those who contested in the election. Both PDP, APC, Labour Party, SDP and all because they’re all our sons. We congratulate them.”

The UPU President further said; “it’s good for all to come together since the case at the Supreme Court has come to an end.

“In every contest, there must be a winner. There must be a victor. What we don’t want is a vanquish. I know the Governor has a large heart. He is not a punishment officer.

“So, I will on behalf of the UPU which is the umbrella body of the Urhobo Progress Union all over the world implore him and let him know that it is the God that he serves that put him there.

“It’s not by might. Bible says, provision does not come from the North, East, West or South. Rather, it comes from God and does not discriminate.

“You know the story of the prodigal son. Even after wasting the wealth of the father, he still came back. The father was the most joyous.

“Whoever, that comes, whoever that has decided to change his mind to work with this government, we beg the governor to accept such persons wholeheartedly without fear or favour, ill-will.”

  • Supreme Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine – Aide

Supreme Court: Oborevwori surviving 38 lawsuits divine – Aide

Dr  Latimore Oghenesivbe, Executive Assistant on Communications and Orientation to  Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, says the governor’s survival of 38 lawsuits  is a divine intervention.

Oghenesivbe stated this while  addressing newsmen at a  happy hour he organised to fete members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Saturday in Asaba, the Delta capital.

The celebration followed  the Supreme Court verdict of Friday in Abuja that affirmed Oborevwori’s victory.

He noted that the Apex Court knocked off unpopular candidates who were capitalising on technicalities to upturn the Oborevwori’s victory at the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Delta.

According to Oghenesivbe, the governor survived 38 criminal lawsuits, from party primary to post governorship election, making him the most fortunate and divinely anointed celebrant in the history of constitutional democracy in Nigeria.

“His political detractors fought him from all angles, pressed all manners of frivolous criminal charges, all in an attempt to stop him from becoming the governor.

“And when he eventually won the governorship election with a wide margin, Oborevwori’s traducers flooded the Courts with multifaceted lawsuits to remove him as governor but all their efforts crashed.”

He said that in all the travails of  Oborevwori, God was with him, and that if God exalted a man, no mere mortal could bring him down.

He said the plethora of criminal lawsuits pressed against the governor could have swept him off his feet if not for the grace of God.

He described  the inner peace, wisdom and strength of character the governor exhibited throughout his ordeals in the hands of desperate politicians  hell bent on stealing the peoples mandate given to him at the polls,  as divine.

Oghenesivbe said the nation’s judiciary, particularly the Supreme Court  in all recent judgments, sent strong signals to unpopular candidates  shopping for frivolous technicalities that there it would  never be business as usual.

He added that in the case of Delta, it was clear that petitioners and Appellants claims and prayers were lacking in merit as declared by the Apex Court, and therefore,  laboured in vain to suppress the will of the good people of the state.

He said that Oborevwori’s hands are  clean, his personal and academic records remained unblemished, his genuine intentions to serve the people could not be faulted.

“He truly and genuinely won the 2023 governorship election with a wide margin, winning 21 out of 25 Local Government Areas,   as against his distant rival, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who won in four.

“Oborevwori campaigned from Ward to Ward, Unit to Unit, Local Government to Government,  marketing his M.O.R.E Agenda to the good people of Delta.

“His opponents were busy casting aspersions, and some of them relied heavily on federal might and legal technicalities to subvert the will of the people to no avail.

“They did all manners of things to stop the move of God, and as we know it in Christiandom, nobody can battle with God and win, the divine principles of ‘Touch not my anointed applies,” he said.

He said  the result of the divine oil of God on Oborevwori’s head played out at the Supreme Court on Friday.

“His academic records were unblemished, his personal records and strength of character cannot be faulted, his landslide victory at the polls was staggering, and above all, God was and still is, with Oborevwori.

” God Touched  on all the 38 criminal litigations across Courts of competent jurisdictions and ended in favour of the governor and his Deputy, Mr Monday Onyeme.

“They divinely and miraculously survived 38 criminal lawsuits to stand tall and remained unbeatable as affirmed by the Apex Court,” Oghenesivbe said.

He urged continued partnership with the media, adding  that, ” constructive criticism remains ideal for good governance, as it morrows positives and negatives,  necessary for nation building.

“But we must abstain from jungle journalism and dissemination of half truth and data manipulations, upholding professional standards and principles of fairness through balanced reporting,” he said.

The Chairman of NUJ, Delta Council, Mr  Churchill Oyowe, thanked the governor’s aide for deeming it necessary to fete Journalists in the state as part of  Oborevwori’s Supreme Court victory celebration.

He said members of the union remained apolitical but noted that the victory of the  governor at the polls was convincing enough to avoid plethora of post election litigations.

He urged politicians to help strengthen and deepen democratic values and culture by accepting defeat to avoid unnecessary wastage of scarce financial resources in post election legal battles.

Oyowe, on behalf of the  state council,  congratulated  Oborevwori on his victory while urging the governor to be magnanimous in victory by extending the olive branch to his opponents.

How Oborevwori survived 38 court cases to become Governor

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Friday, said God ordained him to be Governor and expressed appreciation to Him and Deltans for his victory at the Supreme Court.

Oborevwori said he survived 38 cases in various courts up to the Supreme Court from pre-election to post election to become Governor of Delta State.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service at the Government House Chapel Asaba, the Governor who was joined by his wife, Deaconess Tobore, his Deputy Sir Monday Onyeme and wife, Catherine, immediate past Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and wife, Dame Edith, Governor Oborevwori stressed that God ordained him to be Governor and thanked Deltans for supporting his ambition.

According to him, “I came to this altar before I went to Abuja for this last judgment and I said God is not a man that he should lie. I have promised God that every time He gives me victory I must come here to thank Him.

“I have done it several times and I said I will also return the same day of the victory to thank God. For the Lord has redeemed me.

“This victory is not about me but about the people of Delta state. The immediate past governor said that somebody that would not recognise this altar will never be governor; God has honoured that word.

“This case made it 38 cases for me from pre-election matters to this one. Even the governors who have done eight years did not go through such number of cases.

The Governor who was earlier welcomed from Abuja by a mammoth crowd at the Asaba International Airport, said he was happy that the litigations were over, assuring that he would now concentrate in delivering on his MORE Agenda for the people.

“I was overwhelmed by the crowd and the show of love at the airport. I want to reassure Deltans that my Deputy Governor and I will continue to serve you.

“This victory is for our people to know that our God is faithful and He alone has delivered us.

“I call on my opponents to partner with us to move Delta state forward. This victory is for everyone and like I promised Deltans, I will be the governor for all Deltans,” he said.

In a related development, wild jubilation erupted simultaneously in different parts of Delta State, following the affirmation of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the Governor of Delta State by the Supreme Court on Friday morning.

Reacting to the judgment, the immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on his verified Facebook account, wrote, “following today’s historic judgment by the Supreme Court that has declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the duly-elected leader of our great state, Delta, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, our Deputy Governor, H.E Monday Onyeme and our esteemed party, the PDP.

“This judgment truly underscores the trust and confidence that the people of our state, the Big Heart of our nation, have placed in the leadership of Governor Oborevwori’s administration and our great party.

“As we celebrate this significant achievement, we must see this as a renewed commitment to work collaboratively for all Deltans by focusing on our common goals, pushing to manifest our shared dreams and aspirations, and working to find solutions to the problems that confront our great state and its remarkable people.”

Also, former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, said, “congratulations to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his family, congratulations to all Deltans and to all well wishers across the world.

“These cases have been quite trying, but for those that have passed through this route, propaganda was a big issue.

“We thank God for the overall result; it is now time to settle down fully and deliver the dividends of democracy.”

Former Deputy Governor of the state, Chief Benjamin Elue, also, reacted to the Supreme Court judgment and he said, “this is heartwarming; congratulations our dear Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and our Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; congratulations to all Deltans; we give all the glory to God.

“Now that the battle is over, our Governor can now focus on the task of advancing Delta State; Deltans should expect more development in all spheres to the glory of God Almighty.”

Governor Uba Sani reacts over Supreme Court victory

Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State says Friday’s historic Supreme Court’s judgement that affirmed his election has officially sealed the mandate bestowed upon him by the citizens of the State.

Sani expressed gratitude to the Justices for their sound judgement and praised his opponent, Isa Ashiru, for embracing the legal process.

In a statement, Sani emphasised the importance of democratic values, urging all the citizens and groups committed to Nigeria’s democracy to follow legal channels in addressing grievances.

He said, “With the legal disputes over, it is time for us to join hands to take Kaduna State to a higher level.”

Sani outlined his administration’s people-centered, inclusive, and pro-development approach, inviting all the stakeholders to contribute to the Kaduna Project.

He emphasized the collective responsibility to reflect on the extant challenges and work towards the betterment of the state.

“Today’s verdict is a reminder that our mandate is about improving the lives of our people rather than engaging in wild celebrations,” Sani stated.

He called for a focus on the tasks ahead, expressing confidence in delivering on the SUSTAIN Agenda to make the state a model of development in Nigeria.

How Uba Sani won at Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the election of Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

Delivering judgement, Justice Tijjani Abubakar, dismissed the appeal against the governor by the PDP and it’s candidate, Ashiru Isa.

The court of appeal in Abuja had on Nov.  24 last year in a unanimous judgement affirmed the election of Uba Sani as Kaduna state governor.

The PDP and Ashiru had challenged the outcome of the governorship election held in the state on March 18.

They alleged that Uba was not duly elected by a majority of valid votes cast in the election, adding that the election was invalid by reason of corrupt practices and non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

They further alleged that some polling unit results were wrongfully cancelled, insisting that there were inconsistencies in accreditation records from INEC.

However, in a judgement delivered on September 28, two of the three judges on the Tribunal dismissed the petition on technical grounds.

Victor Oviawie, who led the panel said that the petition was deemed abandoned because PDP and its candidate did not file their pre-hearing application within the time prescribed by law.

  • Supreme Court: How Delta PDP, Labour Party, others reacted over Oborevwori’s victory

Supreme Court: How Delta PDP, Labour Party, others reacted over Oborevwori’s victory

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and others in Delta on Friday in Asaba, felicitated with Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori on his Supreme Court victory which consolidated his election as Governor of Delta.

Gov. Oborevwori having won in 21 LGAs out of 25 LGAs, was declared winner of the March 18, 2023 Governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Delta.

Oborevwori’s major contenders at the election were Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief Kenneth Gbagi, of Social Democratic Party, (SDP) and Mr Ken Pela, of Labour Party (LP).

However, Oborevwori’s victory has been contested by the opponents particularly, the APC candidate, Omo-Agege who came second at the polls haven won in 4 LGAs but with today’s judgement by the Supreme Court, all litigation has ended on the election issue.

In their reactions, the state PDP in a felicitation message signed by its Publicity Secretary, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, said that Gov. Oborevwori’s victory was well deserved.

The party noted that the victory had cleared the coast for the full implementation and delivery of the M.O.R.E Agenda promised the people of Delta during the governor’s campaign.

    “It is with overwhelming happiness, satisfaction, and a huge sense of relief, that the entire PDP family in Delta, offer our unreserved congratulations to;

“His Excellency, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori and our dear Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme on the well-deserved election victory at the highest court in the land, Supreme Court.

“We applaud the judiciary once again for their undoubted consistency and conviction right from the Elections Petitions Tribunal, in maintaining an unwavering position on the result of the March 18, 2023 Governorship election in our State.

“And this final judgement is an irreversible affirmation of the decision of Delta masses to vote landslide for Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori as their duly elected Governor.

“Recall that we had offered the olive branch and extended our hand of collective partnership to our fellow brothers by urging them to reconsider any further challenge, after the Appeal Court verdict.

“But to God be all the Glory that we have now triumphed beyond all petitions, appeals, and litigations over election matters,” it said.

The party added, “we are still magnanimous in our desire to carry every willing party along as we move to deliver M.O.R.E dividends of Democracy to the people of Delta.

“We, therefore, want to, at this juncture and with profound respect and humility, express our deep and unreserved appreciation to all our elders and leaders for their steadfastness, unwavering commitment”.

On his part, State Chairman, Labour Party, Tony Ezeagwu, said that the verdict of the Supreme Court was the final and that it had been accepted in good faith.

He congratulated Gov. Oborevwori and wished him well as he pilots the affairs of the state.

“We have reached the final point at the Supreme Court and nothing more for us to do. We wish him well but let it not be that the winner takes it all, he should extend hands of fellowship to others,” Ezeagwu said.

Also, Dr Latimore Oghenesivbe, Chief Executive Officer, Delta State Orientation Bureau (DSOB) and Executive Assistant to the Governor on Communication, said that the Supreme Court Judgement was a landmark victory for the state.

Oghenesivbe, who had earlier predicted the victory of Gov. Oborevwori while addressing journalists at the inaugural Congress of the State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by Churchill Oyowe in Asaba, said the governor would carry everybody along.

According to Oghenesivbe, the Supreme Court judgement is a landmark victory, Gov. Oborevewori won the March 18, 2023 Governorship elections in Delta convincingly winning 21 LGAs out of 25 LGAs.

He said that now that the litigations are over, that the governor could settle down to handle the affairs of the state.

He assured that the government would address all issues concerning the workers and all segments of the state without distractions.

The Supreme Court, on Friday, in Abuja affirmed the election victory of Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta.

In a unanimous decision, a five-member panel of the apex court dismissed an appeal by the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, filed to challenge the outcome of the governorship election that held in the state on March 18, 2023.

The court, in its lead judgement that was delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, held that the appeal lacked merit.

It held that the APC and its candidate did not prove that the election was not conducted in substantial compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act 2023.

The court dismissed Omo-Agege’s contention that some of the result sheets that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, relied upon to declare Oborevwori as the winner of the election, did not have serial numbers.

According to the court, even if the total number of INEC forms that the Appellants complained about are removed, it would still not affect the margin of lead that was in Oborevwori’s favour.

It held that the Appellants failed to discharge the burden of proof placed on them by the law to warrant the setting aside of both the Court of Appeal judgement and the verdict of the Delta State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

Consequently, it dismissed the petition without cost.

It will be recalled that INEC declared that Oborevwori of the PDP polled 360, 234 votes to win the governorship election ahead of Omo-Agege of the APC who secured 240, 229 votes.

However, dissatisfied with the result, Omo-Agege, who is the immediate past Deputy President of the Senate, approached the court to nullify the outcome of the election.

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun Who affirmed Yahaya as governor dismissed the appeal against his victory brought to it by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and it’s candidate.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had in November last year affirmed the election of Muhammad Yahaya as Governor of Gombe State.

The appellate court had affirmed Yahaya’s election shortly after dismissing two separate appeals challenging his declaration as winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Delivering the lead judgment in the appeal marked: CA/G/EP/GOV/GM/11/2023 and filed by the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Jibrin Mohammed Barde, the presiding Justice, Theresa Orji-Abadua held that the appeal was without merit and subsequently dismissed it.

According to judgment, the petitioners at the lower tribunal, failed to prove their allegations of non-qualification, perjury and certificate forgery raised in the petition.

After dismissing the appeal, the panel subsequently affirmed the judgment of the trial tribunal which had upheld the declaration of Yahaya as governor.

In the other judgment delivered by Justice Folasade Ojo, the appellate court also dismissed the appeal filed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its candidate in the March 18 governorship election, Nafiu Bala.

Ojo held that the appeal was without merit and affirmed the judgment of the tribunal.
