MDCN suspends Lagos doctor after failed cosmetic surgery

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has suspended Adepoju Anuoluwapo, a Lagos-based physician, from medical practice after she performed cosmetic surgery on a client who later lost her life as the procedure allegedly failed.

The Federal Competiton and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) confirmed the news in a statement on Monday.

The federal government had also charged the doctor before a high court in Ikoyi while her facility was shut down.

In the statement, the FCCPC praised the MDCN’s decision to impose temporary measures suspending the accused surgeon “pending full and final disposition of disciplinary proceedings.”

“Every action whether interim or final that prevents the risk of injury to patients/consumers and or mitigates the pain and suffering of citizens on account of injury by manufacturers or service providers is an important component of a larger effort to protect citizens,” it added.

“The Commission finds all such actions or measures commendable. This outcome, interim as it were, validates and reinforces the proprietary of joint or dual regulatory engagement as the Commission always advocates.

“The initiation of robust consumer protection regulatory intervention in the case has catalysed other relevant and appropriate action.

“The Commission commends and appreciates the stellar and robust work, as well as timely disposition in resolving this case in a manner that respects and protects the rights of the service provider, specific citizens who have become otherwise dissatisfied with the services they received, and the public at large.

“This is a demonstration that the system works and can endure, as well as inure to the benefit of society. Whether patient care or good manufacturing, ultimately, the highest responsibility is to consumers.

“We as regulators must hold producers and providers accountable to that obligation. Other regulatory actions continue in due course.”

The regulatory body’s sanction on Anuoluwapo comes after she had defended herself and blamed the difficulties suffered by the deceased patient on her defiance of post-surgery rules.

Roger Federer pulls out of French Open

Roger Federer will miss his fourth French Open in the last five years after having knee surgery on Wednesday.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee – which had been “bothering him for a little while” – in Switzerland.

Federer, who won his only Roland Garros title in 2009, said doctors were “very confident of a full recovery”.

“After the procedure, the doctors confirmed it was the right thing to have done,” the 38-year-old said.

In addition to the French Open, which takes place from 24 May-7 June, Federer will also miss the tournaments in Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota and Miami.

Federer reached the semi-finals last year in his first appearance on the Paris clay since 2015.

“See you on the grass!” added the eight-time Wimbledon champion, who was knocked out of last month’s Australian Open in the semi-finals by Novak Djokovic.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal will be looking to win his 13th French Open title, which would see him draw level with Federer on 20 Grand Slams.

  • Alleged ‘judge bribery’: Court grants Rickey Tarfa 90 days to recuperate from surgery

A Lagos High Court in Igbosere on Friday gave a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr Rickey Tarfa, 90 more days to recuperate from surgery.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye made the order following Tarfa’s application for more time after suffering unexpected complications.

The Silk has been unable to attend his trial for alleged judge bribery since January 21, when he visited Europe following a medical emergency.

He is standing trial on a 26-count charge of offering gratification to two judges of the Federal High Court – Justices Hyeladzira Nganjiwa and Mohammed Yunusa – as well as alleged justice perversion.

Upon his return to Nigeria, Tarfa did not set foot in the courtroom on March 11, 19, May 8 and 31 when the matter came up.

He always stayed downstairs in his car.

According to his counsel, Mr Abiodun Owonikoko SAN, Tarfa was unable to climb the staircase leading to Justice Akintoye’s courtroom, even on a wheelchair, because of the severity of his condition.

On March 19, Owonikoko filed a medical recommendation from Tarfa’s doctors which stated that the defendant required a minimum of three months medical leave to enable him recuperate.

The three months would have elapsed on Wednesday.

On May 31, Tarfa filed an application seeking an extension of his recovery time.

But the judge ordered that she wanted to see a medical report on his health from a general or a teaching hospital before hearing the application.

At the resumption of proceedings yesterday, Tarfa, who was represented by Mr John Odubela SAN, said the defendant had carried out the judge’s instructions.

“We have provided sufficient evidence sorrounding the defendant’s health circumstances,” Odubela said, among other things.

He explained that Tarfa had succumbed to unexpected complications in his recovery process and that he was going through “so much pain” that the doctor who performed the operation had to be flown in.

    The doctor, the SAN added,
and he, after attending to Tarfa, recommended that the defendant be visited by a physiotherapist everyday.

He prayed the court to discountenance the opposition of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Mr U. U. Buhari and rather, grant Tarfa’s prayers.

“The management of the post surgery is very important. It is a matter of three, four months or thereabout. Only the living can stand trial,” Odubela added.

In her ruling, Justice Akintoye held that having taken all the factors into consideration “I am inclined to grant the applicant’s prayer.

“The defendant is entitled to adequate time to prepare his defence, which, of course, must be balanced with the prosecution’s right to reasonable time conclude his case.”

The judge also noted that the lengthy adjournment was “not a stay of proceedings as suggested by the prosecution.

“The applicant is expected to appear in court on the next date. He is also hereby ordered to submit a complete medical report from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.”

She adjourned further proceedings till September 19, October 3, and 4.

Tarfa was arraigned by the EFCC on March 9, 2016 and subsequently re-arraigned on November 16, 2016 on an amended charge.

The anti-graft agency claimed that between June 27, 2012 and January 8, 2016, Tarfa paid a total of N5.3 million in several tranches into Justice Nganjiwa’s bank account.

He was also accused of paying into Justice Yunusa’s account, N800,000 in three tranches between February 9 and November 30, 2015.

The commission alleged that the payments were to compromise the judges.

The SAN was equally accused of age falsification.

Tarfa pleaded not guilty and was granted bail on self-recognizance.

The EFCC has since closed its case, following which Tarfa opened his defence after the court dismissed his no-case submission.

  • Andy Murray undergoes hip surgery

Former world number one Andy Murray has undergone a hip resurfacing surgery in London, the 31-year-old Scot said on Tuesday.

Murray has struggled to regain form since undergoing hip surgery last year and was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this month, having said the tournament could be his last as a professional.

His post on Instagram featured an X-ray picture of his hip.
“I now have a metal hip “Feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain,” Murray wrote in his post.

In an emotional news conference in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open, Murray announced he would retire this year, preferably after a farewell appearance at Wimbledon.

The two-time Olympic champion told BBC this month that surgery was the only option if he wanted to extend his career.

“There is a strong possibility I won’t come back and play after an operation. I want to play tennis, but not with the hip I have right now,” he said.

The ATP Tour posted a tweet in support for Murray: “Get well soon Andy, we know you will do everything to get back on tour!”

Three-time Grand Slam Murray initially had surgery on his right hip in January 2018 and has played 15 matches since returning to action last June.

He was due to play in next month’s Marseille Open but withdrew from the tournament last week.

  • Buttocks enlargement specialist flees as client dies after surgery

Buttocks enlargement specialist flees as client dies after surgery

A high profile plastic surgeon dubbed Dr. Bumbum is on the run after a woman died hours after a procedure on her buttocks.

Dr. Denis Furtado, who is regularly on Brazilian TV and has 647,000 Instagram followers, has performed thousands of bottom enlargement operations. But he vanished when Lilian Calixto, 46, fell ill and died after receiving injections at his Rio de Janeiro home.

It is thought that the married mum-of-two wanted to have acrylic fillers injected to increase the size of her buttocks, and a hormone implant to treat symptoms of menopause. But soon after, she began gasping for air and Dr. Furtado took her to the Barra D’Or hospital.

Ms Calixto, a bank worker, was found to be in an “extremely severe condition, unresponsive to manoeuvres,” and died within hours.

A hospital source claimed that the surgeon accidentally injected the product into her artery, leading to a blood clot that ruptured her heart.

Dr. Furtado’s girlfriend and a nurse who assisted him in the procedure have been arrested, but officers have not been able to track him down.

Ms Calixto’s husband of 20 years, Osmar Jamberci, told Brazil’s Extra newspaper: “She went on Saturday night and was due to return that night, it was going to be a quick thing.

“She told the family that she was going to have an implant because of the menopause.

“At 8.30am on Sunday, this doctor called me telling me there had been a complication and that they needed someone (for the hospital) to release her body.

“It was the only time I spoke to him, and after that, he disappeared.”

The couple’s 13-year-old daughter was said to be the only person who knew she was preparing to have her buttocks lifted.

Police and Rio de Janeiro’s Regional Medical Council have opened separate investigations into the incident.
