  • Kenya doctors performs brain surgery on wrong patient

Staff from nurses to the CEO have been suspended at a Nairobi hospital after the wrong patient underwent brain surgery.

One patient needed surgery for a blood clot on the brain, the other only non-invasive treatment for swelling.

But a horrifying mix-up of identification tags saw the wrong man operated on, reports say.

The doctors did not realise their mistake until “hours into the surgery”, the Daily Nation reported.

They then realised “there was no blood clot”.

The patient who was operated on is recovering, the hospital says, and an investigation is under way. Regulators have demanded a report and plan to hold a hearing.

Social media users have expressed shock that such an incident could have been allowed to happen.

It comes only six weeks after the health minister ordered an investigation into claims new mothers were sexually assaulted at the same hospital.

  • Six-year-old Boko Haram victim returns to Nigeria after successful surgery in Dubai [Photos]

A six-year-old victim of Boko Haram violence, Ali Ahmadu, has returned to Nigeria after undergoing a surgery in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Ahmadu had earlier survived a corrective surgery in his spinal cord after spending 14 days in a Dubai hospital.

He was flown to Dubai on September 10 for the surgery. However, while travelling to Dubai for the surgery, all little Ali could mutter repeatedly in Hausa was: “Ina so insake tafiya da kafana…Don Allah ataimakamu…Don Allah. Ina so in je makaranta”. (“I want to begin to walk with my legs again. For God’s sake, assist me. I want to go to school”).

The surgery was facilitated under the umbrella of GIPLC, a non-governmental organisation that coordinated the appeal for help to enable the young boy walk again, after he was attacked and maimed by insurgents.

Following the appeal, the Dickens Sanomi Foundation provided over N17 million for the hospital fees as well as transportation and other services in Dubai.

Ali returned to Abuja aboard Ethiopian airline accompanied by his aunt and Nuhu Kwajafa, the coordinator of GIPLC, who were by his bedside during the period of treatment and rehabilitation.

An official of the foundation, who received Ali at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Goodluck Hayi, in a brief address to journalists said the foundation will be working with Ali’s family through GIPLC to support his post-surgery life.

“I am authorised to announce that an educational scholarship will be provided for Ali until he gets to University by the Taleveras Foundation.”

Mr. Hayi recalled that about three months ago, “we all witnessed at the same airport Ali Ahmadu being taken away on a wheel chair, today to the Glory of God we are here to receive Ali Ahmadu, walking handsomely into our arms.”

He said what started as ”a painful journey for Ali after the Boko Haram attack in Chibok, four years ago that confined him to a wheel chair”, has transformed into a ”journey of hope, love and care.”

“Dickens Sanomi Foundation is backed by the principle of love and care, one that was practised and preached by the late assistant inspector general of police, Mr Dickens Sanomi. Today, we demonstrate these principles by being our neighbours keepers and teaching love by showing it,” he said.

The coordinator of GIPLC, who also spoke upon arrival from Dubai said young Ali “suffered excruciating pains all over his body, brought upon him by the senseless marauders,” when they invaded his village of Chibok in 2014.

Mr. Kwajafah said Boko Haram terrorists “crushed everything/everyone in their path, severely damaging his still-forming vertebral column in the process but the hand of God preserved Ali, so we may give glory to His name.”

He added that since that incident, the little boy never accessed any form of orthodox medication.

“He was at the mercy of traditionalists, in highly unpredictable and perilous times. Obviously, during this period, access to education, nutrition, psychosocial tuning, water, sanitation or hygiene, was very limited, if not non-existent.

“He was immobile and fast detoriating, physically and mentally, from that period until the 1st quarter of this year, 2017, when GIPLC made contact with him,” he said.

He also said the organisation facilitated the relevant examinations & digital/lab tests, for assessment and proper medical attention.

“After duly assessing the various options open to us, from all over the world, we resolved to take him to the UAE. After almost 6 hours of extremely delicate surgery, about a week in ICU and a month in recovery, Ali took his first steps into a brighter future,” he said.

Mr. Kwajafah said GIPLC is committed to Ali’s post-surgery well-being and have received confirmation from Dickens Sanomi Foundation to support his settling in the society, while the Taleveras Foundation will provide him with a scholarship.

Mr. Kwajafah said GIPLC will also organise an end of year party for orphans and vulnerable children, targeting over 3,000 of them.

  • Photos: Ali, 6-year-old Boko Haram victim survives surgery, begins to walk

A six-year old Boko Haram victim, Ali Ahmadu, has survived a corrective surgery in his spinal cord. He can now walk, after 14 days in a Dubai hospital.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that on September 10, while travelling to Dubai for the surgery, all little Ali could mutter repeatedly in Hausa was: “Ina so insake tafiya da kafana…Don Allah ataimakamu…Don Allah. Ina so in je makaranta”. (“I want to begin to walk with my legs again. For God’s sake, assist me. I want to go to school”).

Now Ali can walk as he “miraculously” stood up from his hospital bed to the amazement of his shocked doctors. They had projected that it would take him four weeks to walk.

The surgery which took place at Zulekha Hospital Sharjah in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was coordinated by Dr. Nishit Bhargava.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the surgery was bankrolled by the Dickens Sanomi Foundation with $48,000 (N17.5million).

The Foundation was established by Mr. Igho Sanomi who owns the Taleveras Group.

Sanomi said: “Miracles do happen. For those of you who don’t believe in God, better believe in God now.

This is Ali Ahmadu who was run over by Boko Haram terrorists in 2014. The boy and his pregnant mother were left under a tree for three days. The boy was bleeding from mouth and nose throughout the agonising days.

Ali’s spinal cord was damaged and he couldn’t walk. For three years, help was needed. God made it possible after five to six hours of surgery and 48 hours in intensive care. Little Ali could walk again. This happened today to everyone’s surprise.

This determined six-year old boy got off his bed and decided to walk despite doctors’ expectations that he would need physiotherapy to learn to walk again at least three weeks after surgery. Today, Ali walked after just seven days.

This made my day and I am so proud of the Dickens Sanomi Foundation for making this surgery possible financially.”

The Founder of Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care (GIPLC), Mr. Nuhu Fulani Kwajafa, who collaborated with the Sanomi Foundation, how Ali was picked up before finally landing in Dubai.

He said: “After five hours on the 17th of September and almost 48 hours in Intensive Care Unit, Ali Ahmadu had a very successful procedure.

It has been a divine journey starting far away in Chibok in 2014. It is the story of a little boy left to die, underneath a tree, to where (Dubai) we are today.

It is about a fighting spirit, a resolute charming soul and spirit beating all odds to survive and walk again.

It seemed unachievable but thanks to all our efforts. We have cause to rejoice. This is to say a big thank you from Ali’s family and GIPLC. Most especially our best regards goes to the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his colleagues who set the ball rolling towards raising funds and awareness for the surgery.

Our profound gratitude goes specially to Dickens Sanomi Foundation for making it all happen and for being at the hospital with Ali..

This surgery was made possible by the esteemed Foundation. Thank you once again the Chairman of the Foundation, Igho Sanomi and its Board of Trustees.

We thank the press (print and electronic). We cannot do it without you.We are grateful. We thank Nigerians for their prayers and well-wishes. God will bless you all immensely. God has done it again.”

  • Jesus avoids surgery on eye socket

Manchester City’s Brazilian star striker Gabriel Jesus says he will not need surgery on his right eye socket which was fractured by team-mate Nicolas Otamendi.

The 20-year-old Brazil international had to go off after the accidental collision with Argentina defender Otamendi in a match in Melbourne, Australia, last Friday.

However, he felt sufficiently cheered by the assessment of the medical staff to go public with the news on Thursday.

“Yesterday I did a facial resonance, several exams and I have good news! My recovery is going very well and I won’t need surgery,” he wrote on Facebook.

“In 15 days I will be reassessed but all signs show that I will be back within three weeks!

“Thanks a lot to everyone that sent me messages, who supported me, sent positive vibes and prayed for me.

“Thank you to Dr Jorge Pagura, Dr Claudio Lotemberg and Dr Sergio Miranda, for the treatment and attention.”

Jesus made a strong impact at City upon his arrival in January, scoring three goals in his first three appearances before suffering a broken bone in his foot that sidelined him for two months.

City manager Pep Guardiola labelled him “special” and suggested the club might have been fighting for the title rather than scrapping for a Champions League place had he been available all season.

With pre-season training still a few weeks away, Guardiola will hope Jesus will be back in time for the US tour which begins in July.
