    PDP South South zonal secretary suspended for one month

    The South-South Zonal Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its Zonal Secretary, Felix Omemu, for one month.

    The suspension comes after allegations of misconduct and making unauthorized statements to the media.

    He had earlier declared a recent meeting of the South-South ZEC, held in Benin, Edo State, as illegal. In a statement from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, he argued that the meeting was unconstitutional because it did not have approval from the Zonal Working Committee.

    During the meeting in Benin, Martin Amaewhule, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, proposed the motion for Omemu’s suspension. The motion was supported by Hon. Godwin Offiono, a House of Representatives member representing Ogoja/Yala constituency.

    Amaewhule stated, “Chief Felix Omemu has been suspended and a disciplinary committee was set up to investigate him. Omemu’s action is illegal and an attempt to cause disunity and dissuade members from attending the South-South ZEC meeting in Benin.”

    Following the suspension, PDP Zonal Legal Adviser, George Turnah, was appointed as the Acting Zonal Secretary.

    The South-South Vice Chairman, Dan Orbih, praised the decision, calling it a necessary step to strengthen the party and maintain unity. “This move is aimed at curbing the excesses of leaders and members who seek to disrupt party harmony,” Orbih said.

    The meeting was attended by the Zonal Chairman, Senators, and House of Representatives members from five South-South states, except Akwa Ibom State.

    Enigie Palaver: Prof. Akenzua suspended from Benin royal family

    The Benin royal family has announced the suspension of the embattled Professor Gregeory Akenzua from the royal family.

    Prof. Akenzua is one of the suspended enigies (dukes) in the kingdom.

    The Benin royal family wielded the big stick on the Enegie following his legal tussle alongside other dukes with the Oba of Benin.

    Prof. Akenzua and other Enigie had taken the Oba of Benin to court challenging their suspension as enigie in the kingdom.

    Professor Gregory Akenzua, a professor of Gynaecology, former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin and former chairman Governing Council of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma is a younger brother to Oba Erediauwa, the father of Oba Ewuare II.

    Addressing a press conference, members of the royal family said Professor Akenzua against all entreaties had chosen to challenge the Benin Traditional Institution through his acts “that are utterly at variance with the customs and tradition of the Benin people, and the core values of the Benin Royal Family.”

    The press statement read on behalf of the royal family by Prince George Eweka said: “Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua, has betrayed the core values of respect for the Benin Customs and Tradition;devotion and submission to the customary hierarchy of the Benin Kingdom; and respect for customary arbitration process.Instead, he has chosen the path of rebellion;

    “For the avoidance of doubt, the Royal Family wishes to emphasize that His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin occupies a unique position as the father of every member of the Benin Royal Family irrespective of age. Hence the Royal family does not have an Okaegbe, like other families in Benin Kingdom but Odion Egbe who is required by tradition to defer to His Royal Majesty;

    The Royal Family also notes that in utter violation of the hierarchy of succession to the Odion-Egbe position of the Benin Royal Family, Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua has been parading himself as the Odion-Egbe of the Royal Family,and has held meetings to assert himself as such when he knows that he is not rightfully entitled to the position being far lower in the hierarchy of seniority in the Benin Royal Family;

    The Benin Royal Family has given ample opportunities to Prof.Gregory Idurobo Akenzua to retrace his steps and return to the path of honour and dignity;

    “Prof. Gregory Idurobo Akenzua has snubbed and rejected the opportunities provided by the Royal Family for him to retrace his wrongful steps.

    “After a careful review of the facts, the Benin Royal Family has decided as follows:

    “Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua is hereby suspended from the Benin Royal Family for his acts of rebellion against the Benin Traditional Institution;

    Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua is no longer to participate in any activity connected with the Benin Royal Family.

    “All members of the Benin Royal Family are strongly directed not to relate, associate, or engage with Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua for as long as he remains suspended from the Benin Royal Family.”

    Contacted for his reaction, Professor Akenzua said he was in Lagos “for an engagement” and requested time.

    Benue council chairmen only suspended to pave way for investigation- governor Alia

    Benue State Governor Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia has described as blatant lies allegations emanating from a section of the media that he has sacked Local Government Council Chairmen in the state.

    Recall that council chairmen who were elected under the platform of the PDP accused the governor of sacking them

    But Alia while reacting in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary Sir Tersoo Kula at the weekend in Makurdi, explained that the governor only upheld the recommendation by directing the Council Chairmen to handover government property in their possession and offices to the various DGSAs of their council’s.

    He expressed disappointment with the action of the Council Chairmen by resulting to blackmail and lies, insisting that they were only suspended from office and not sacked as was being speculated, arguing that the move was to pave way for a seamless investigation.

    The governor maintained that he merely acted on the correspondence from the State House of Assembly which recommended suspension of the said Council Chairmen, stressing that further actions could only be taken when investigations into the corruption allegations levelled against them would be completed.

    Governor Alia who equally denied knowledge of any court judgement describing such a development as mere speculations, pointed out that as a law abiding citizen, he would never do anything to breach a court order, arguing that even if there was any court order compelling government not to sack the Chairmen, there is no order barring government from investigating the Chairmen.

    The governor who wondered whether the council Chairmen have been misled into assuming that they are entitled to political immunity as elected council chairmen, advised them to feel free if they have no skeletons in their cupboards by allowing those carrying out investigation to complete their assignment rather than jumping here and there, advising that if they must come to equity they should be prepared to do so with clean hands.

    The cleric governor who insisted that the  Council Chairmen remained suspended from office pending the outcome of investigation, urged them to be patient as they would be availed the opportunity to defend themselves before the House of Assembly ad-hoc committee, assuring that those who would not be found guilty would be reinstated.

    The council chairmen who were elected under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, by the immediate past government last Saturday, during a press conference in Makurdi, accused the Father Alia APC led government in the state of flouting a court judgement by going ahead to sack them from a two year term in office.

  • Probe committee lists nine firms for invitation over suspended SEC-DG, Gwarzo

    The panel, set up to probe the suspended Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Mounir Gwarzo, is set to invite nine firms alleged to have been used by him to siphon funds from the commission.

    The report of the panel is expected to be sent to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, which is also investigating Gwarzo.

    The firms include Outbound Investment Limited, Medusa Investment Limited, Northwind Environmental Services, Micro-Technologies Nigeria Limited, Tida International Limited, Outlook Communication, Acromac Nigeria Limited, Balfort International Limited and Interactive Worldwide Nigeria Limited.

    According to some petitions against Gwarzo, some of the companies allegedly belong to him or his relatives.

    In one of the petitions, it was alleged that one of the companies, Outbound Investment Limited, is owned by the suspended SEC boss while another firm, Medusa Investment Limited, is jointly owned by Gwarzo and his wife, Khadija.

    The petition read in part, “Mr. Gwarzo and two of his relatives are directors of Outbound Investment Limited. Since Mr. Gwarzo assumed office as the DG of the commission, the company has been the sole supplier of diesel to the commission.

    “The company has also supplied air conditioners to the Lagos zonal office of the commission as well as supplied fridges to the commission. Payments made by the commission to the company for contracts executed can be verified from the company’s bank account held with account number 1016723428.

    “Mr. Gwarzo is also the director of Medusa Investment Limited. The only other director of the company is Khadija Mustapher, his wife. The company has actively been used to carry out illegal transactions through the company’s bank account with Guaranty Trust Bank with number 0023953920.”

    In the petition, sent to the House of Representatives, Gwarzo was accused of diverting money from the commission under the pretext that he was organising staff training.

    Some shell companies, which lacked the requisite expertise, were alleged to have been paid bogus sums of money for the training.

    The petitioner added, “Prior to Mr. Gwarzo’s tenure, the commission used to pay between N60,000 and N150,000 to reputable training providers such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Nigerian Institute of Management, Financial Institutions Training Centre, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos Business School and Centre for Management Development to train staff of the commission.

    “However, when Mr. Gwarzo assumed office as SEC DG, he commenced paying sums ranging from N700,000 to N780,000 per staff (sic) as training fee to training institutions owned by his friends and associates.

    “Some of the training providers were disguised as reputable foreign training organisations even when it was evident that some of the training providers did not have any pedigree or history of training anyone abroad.”

    Gwarzo also allegedly collected the sum of N6m from the commission to fly first-class to Hong Kong in October 2016 in total disregard for the Federal Government’s directive issued in April 2016 in circular SGF/6/S2/X/545, which prohibited public officials from flying first-class.

    The N6m was said to have been paid into his Guaranty Trust Bank account with number 0023868895.
