Italy midfielder, Tonali to serve 10 months suspension for his involvements in football betting

  • Domestic Airlines laud Keyamo over Nigeria Air suspension

Domestic Airlines laud Keyamo over Nigeria Air suspension

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has lauded the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo for suspending every activity related to the operationalisation of the Nigeria Air.

Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, spokesman for the airlines made this known in a statement in Lagos on Friday.

Recalled that the minister on Thursday,  said all activities of Nigeria Air and Concession were suspended until he briefed  President Bola Tinubu about them.

Okonkwo, who is also the Chairman of United Airline,  said by the action, the minister had displayed rare courage and great patriotism to save Nigeria from further embarrassment in the aviation world.

The spokesman said it was evident to everyone who had followed developments around the Nigeria Air project under the immediate past administration that the idea was  ill-thought and   lacked modicum of transparency.

“It was therefore,  no surprise that the House of Representatives Committees on Aviation which investigated the process and purported launch of Nigeria Air on Friday, June 2, 2023,  described it as a fraud

“It remains a puzzle to Nigerians why the processes of actualising such a major national project was shrouded in almost utter secrecy until the end of the last government.

“However, we remain confident that by suspending the Nigeria Air project to allow for a thorough review, the new aviation minister will put things right and help restore Nigeria’s image in the global aviation family.

“AON continues to believe that it is not right to float a national carrier on the terms set out by the immediate past aviation minister.

“This is because the process will undermine, even destroy, the aviation sector in Nigeria with Ethiopian Airlines waiting on the wings for total takeover.”he said.

Okonkwo said the airlines had no doubt that the new aviation minister had the right vision for the development of the sector which was driven by public interest considerations for the good of Nigerians.

He reiterated AON’s commendation to the minister for the great leadership he had shown early in his tenure and pledged their unalloyed support in his quest to reform the aviation sector.

  • NNPP denies purported suspension of Kwankwaso

NNPP denies purported suspension of Kwankwaso

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has refuted the purported suspension of Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 Presidential Candidate from the party.

Mr Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP National Auditor, stated this at a news conference on Wednesday the party’s National Headquarters in Abuja.

Johnson, a former spokesperson for Kwankwanso presidential Campaign Council, said that the suspension was null and void.

A faction of the party headed by a former Board of Trustees (BoT) Chairman, Mr Boniface Aniebonan had on Tuesday suspended Kwankwaso for six months over alleged anti-party activities, after a parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) in Lagos.

It also appointed the former National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Major Agbo as the acting National Chairman.

But, Johnson said that Aniebonam and Agbo were on Aug. 24 suspended for three months for engaging in unwholesome acts before they were later expelled from the party.

He added that the party NEC at its meeting on Tuesday in Abuja monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) took certain decisions including the election of new national officials, change of the party logo and expulsion of Aniebonam and Agbo.
“Is it not funny that all those people either suspended or expelled would gather somewhere and claim to have suspended Kwankwaso and also dissolve the NWC?

“The jokers also appointed a CTC made up of those people who have ceased to be members of the party by virtue of our constitution.

“Was INEC at the meeting? Did they write INEC? Who and who signed the letter?

“Is it not laughable that Major Agbo, who announced the suspension of the former chairmen, the expulsion of two of them, and the dissolution of some of the states is now purportedly “heading” their caretaker committee,” Johnson said.

He said it was unfortunate that some people had reduced politics and party administration to huge jokes.

“The news that one person will sit somewhere and arrogate certain powers to himself is not permissible in a democracy.

“We are using this medium to assure our supporters all over the country that there is no substance in the story.

“Kwankwaso remains the face of the party, has not been suspended, and the NWC under Ali remains intact,’’ he said.

Johnson however, admitted that Kwankwaso was invited to meetings by President Bola Tinubu on some issues saying that the meetings were far from being an anti-party activities.

He said that while Kwankwaso always took permission before attending such meetings, no conclusion had so far being reached from the meetings.

He also denied the allegation that Kwankwaso hijacked the party from members who were in the party before he joined with his movement in February 2022.

Johnson, however, said that the party leadership would do its best for possible reconciliation.

Also speaking, Mr Oluwatosin Odeyemi, the Chairman, forum of NNPP state chairmen, said the purported suspension of Kwankwaso was politics of bitterness.

“Let me remind you that the present secretary of that group was expelled from this party and Agbo was the one who read it out that he had been expelled. Agbo attended all the meetings of that committee.

“So you can see that it’s politics of bitterness. Something you read is something you agreed with. It was not as if you were pressure to read a release as the national publicity secretary.

“So now an expelled person that you confirm his explosion is whom you are now regarding so as yours, secretary,’’ Odeyemi said.

AU suspends Niger until restoration of constitutional order

The African Union (AU) Commission has on Tuesday suspended Niger from the pan-African bloc until normal constitutional order is restored in the country following the latest military coup.

The decision to suspend Niger from AU membership was made by the Peace and Security Council of the AU Commission during its latest meeting that dwelt upon the situation in the western African country, AU said in a statement.

The council decided “to immediately suspend the participation of Niger from all activities of the AU and its organs and institutions until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country.”

It reiterated its “unequivocal condemnation” of the military coup that took place on July 26 in Niger, which resulted in the ousting of democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum by a faction of military officers.

The council reaffirmed its full solidarity with the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through diplomatic means.

“The council strongly rejected any external interference by any actor or any country outside the continent in the peace and security affairs in Africa.

“It also rejects engagements by private military companies in the continent in line with the 1977 OAU Convention for the Elimination of Mercenarism in Africa, the statement said.

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) was the predecessor of the AU.

It urged the military to place the supreme interests of Niger and its people above all else and to immediately and unconditionally return to the barracks, and submit to civilian authorities consistent with the constitution of Niger.

The council also reiterated its deep concern over the resurgence of military coups as it undermines democracy, peace, security and stability, as well as development in the continent, the statement added.

  • UNICAL management has no vested interest in Dean’s suspension – VC

UNICAL management has no vested interest in Dean’s suspension – VC

Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Calabar, (Unical), has disclosed that the management of the institution had no vested interest in the suspension of Prof. Cyril Ndifon, former Dean of the Faculty of Law.

Obi made this known in a press briefing on Monday in Calabar, following allegations that some senior members of staff of the institution wanted the professor out.

It would be recalled that Ndifon was on Aug. 17 suspended by the institution after he responded to a query given to him by the school management.

The query followed allegations of high handedness, improper behaviour towards female students, extortion, and unequal treatment among others.

The VC said, following the response to the query from the former Dean over the allegations leveled against him by staff and students of the faculty of law, they were left with no other option other than to set up an investigative panel.

She said the panel, which followed the  public service rules, would involve some staff of the faculty, the institution’s alumni, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, (FCCPC), and police among others.

“On Thursday Aug. 10, some law students led by their president came to my office to see me on some alleged improprieties going-on in their faculty and dropped a formal petition.

“Based on the issues that were raised by the students, the management decided to meet with senior academics in the faculty and while we were having the said meeting on Aug. 14, we were informed that some students were protesting.

“We granted the students audience and they raised issues that bordered on accountability, abuse of office, extortion, sexual harassment and many others”, she said, alleging that sexual harassment gained more prominence in the public space.

She assured the students that the allegations would be looked into but the meeting with the senior staff of the faculty that continued later, revealed many other allegations not touched by the protesting students.

According to her, the management resolved with the staff of the faculty of law on the need for some basic changes to be effected in the faculty to prevent what they termed as the overbearing influence of the Dean in the faculty.

“Some of the immediate decisions we took was setting up a committee on student mobilisation to law school because the students had alleged that the Dean was being selective and using female students as bait.

“We also mandated the committee to look at the list of law school students that had been sent by the former Dean and if need be, the list will be recalled.

“While we removed two examination officers from the faculty and set-up a vetting committee following allegations of result manipulations, we also set up a student project committee that will be assigning projects and grading.

“This follows allegations that the former Dean was in the habit of selecting only female students as his supervisees thereby making them vulnerable,” he said

She maintained that the management had ordered a compilation and submission of list of students extorted by the faculty, to be refunded following allegations of extortion of students in the faculty, among other weighty allegations.

While adding that the management would not fold its hands and accept ugly scenerios in the institution, both the students and staff who had alleged and the accused former Dean would be given the opportunity to defend themselves before the panel.

FIFA lifts suspension of Zimbabwe’s football federation

Football’s ruling body FIFA said on Tuesday, it has lifted the suspension of Zimbabwe’s national federation ZIFA and installed a normalisation committee to ensure that FIFA statutes are followed there.

The news came ahead of Thursday’s African qualifying draw for the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA had suspended ZIFA last year after the government disbanded the ZIFA leadership in connection with allegations of embezzlement of state funds, and not having investigated several cases of sexual harassment committed by football officials.

Under FIFA rules, government interference in football matters is prohibited and sanctioned.

The normalisation committee is to run the daily affairs of ZIFA and restructure its administration and review statutes.

It will also organise elections of a new ZIFA board and establish an agreement with the nation’s sports ministry to define each side’s role.

Zimbabwe sports minister Kirsty Coventry named the suspension period tough and costly but that it will help football in the country.

BREAKING: Court lifts suspension order on Abure, other, LP officers

Justice Hamza Muazu of a High Court in Abuja, on Friday granted an order of stay execution on the suspension of Julius Abure, Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) and others.

Others are the National Organizing Secretary, Mr Clement Ojukwu, and National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara, from parading themselves as LP national officials,

The plaintiffs in the case are Martins Esikpali John; Lucky Shaibu; Isah Zekeri; Omogbai Frank; Abokhaiu Aliu; Ayohkaire Lateef; John Elomah and Dr Ayobami Arabambi.

They had in an ex-parte motion, marked M/7082/2023, sought the removal of Abure and the three other national officers of the party which the judge granted order of suspension

The judge after listening to arguments from parties granted the order for stay execution pending the determination of the appeal filed by the defendants.

Justice Muazu had on April 5 issued an interim injunction stopping Abure, Ibrahim, and the party’s National Organizing Secretary, Mr Clement Ojukwu, and National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara, from parading themselves as national officers of LP.

This was contained in an ex-parte motion, marked M/7082/2023, brought before the court by the eight plaintiffs.

At the sitting today, the defendants told the court that they have a notice of appeal pending at the court, of appeal. .

After much arguments from parties, the judge granted order for a stay on the suspension.

Following the April 5 ex-parte injunction made by Justice Muazu, stopping Abure, Ibrahim and two other national officials of the party, Alex Ejesieme, SAN had on April 20 argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

The senior advocate had submitted that the matter before the court bordered on the internal affairs of the Labour Party, adding that criminal allegations made by the plaintiffs in the case, could not be ventilated in an origination summon.

He added that the eight plaintiffs that brought the case before the court were not members of the National Executive Council of the party and as such lacked the locus standi to institute the case.

According to Ejesieme, “Our contention is very clear that those criminal allegations cannot be ventilated in an origination summon.

“The issue of locus standi is there. When you referred to LP’s constitution, the claimants are not members of NEC or the party.

They have a duty to present their membership cards to the court which they didn’t.”

While objecting to the preliminary objection raised by the counsel for Abure, counsel for the plaintiffs, Mr. George Ibrahim, urged the court to dismiss same.

According to him, the first to fourth defendants had yet to obey the April 5 order of the court as they were still parading themselves as national officers of the LP.

With the ruling of the court on having jurisdiction to hear the case, its order of April 5 subsists.

The judge then adjourned until today to hear the substantive case.

Earlier, the plaintiffs had informed the court, through their counsel, Ogwu Onoja SAN, that Abure and the three other national officials allegedly forged several documents of the FCT High Court, including receipts, seal, and affidavits, to carry out unlawful substitutions in the last general election.

Onoja argued that following their indictment by police investigation, the four people are to be arraigned in court, adding that warrants for their arrest have already been obtained.

  • EPL: FA bans Jurgen Klopp for two games over comments on Referee Tierney

EPL: FA bans Jurgen Klopp for two games over comments on Referee Tierney

For his comment against center referee, Paul Tierney in the match Liverpool versus Tottenham Hotspurs at Anfield, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been given a two-match touchline suspension by the Football Association.

Tottenham came back from 3-0 down to equalize Liverpool 3-3 before Diogo Jota scored a dying Minute winner to secure all three points for the Reds.

The ban will see Klopp miss the Reds‘ final home game of the season against Aston Villa, with the second game suspended until the end of next season.

The FA’s verdict levied Klopp with a two-match ban, but the second match of said ban is suspended on the condition that the manager can avoid any further breaches of the FA’s Rule E3 through the end of the upcoming 2023-24 season.

If Klopp avoids any further charges through the end of next season, then, he will only be sidelined for Saturday’s game. If he faces a similar charge next season, the second game of the touchline ban will automatically kick in.

The Liverpool manager was also fined £75k as part of the ruling, which will mean assistant Pepijn Lijnders is on charge in the bench for Saturday’s afternoon kickoff as this team say their goodbyes to the Anfield faithful.

Jurgen Klopp will not be on the sideline when Liverpool face already relegated Southampton on the last match day of the season.

  • PDP denies purported suspension of Makarfi

PDP denies purported suspension of Makarfi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied the purported suspension of Sen. Mohammed Makarfi from the party, over alleged anti-party activities.

Mr Felix Hyet, the Kaduna State PDP Chairman, said this in a statement in Kaduna on Tuesday.

“We call you to clarify the purported suspension of the PDP leader, Sen. Mohammed Makarfi by few misguided members of his ward in Makarfi Local Government Area (LGA).

‘’We want to tell you that those people have no power to suspend the caliber of a member like Makarfi, except the National Leadership of the party.

“There is nobody that played the role of Makarfi during the campaign he led to big towns where we held town hall meetings with political groups, religious and cultural groups. He spent his resources.

‘’Therefore for anybody to wake up and say that Makarfi was involved in anti-party activities, I say it is a joke taken too far,’’ Hyet said.

He added: “We want to tell the world who Makarfi is, what he has done for the party and we stand by him, we have set aside that misguided press statement because it has no effect, it is therefore null and void.

‘’Therefore it should be discarded forthwith among all the critical stakeholders we have in the state.

‘’Makarfi stands taller because he supported the party in the last election. He followed us to all the 23 LGAs on campaigns.

“Already, the majority member of ward Exco, and the LGA Exco have met and they have taken disciplinary decision that could be meted out to those who did it.’’

“Let me clarify also that these are people who have been identified as having participated in anti- party activities during the last election under the guidance of their leaders at the state level who never went into any campaign throughout.

“We therefore want to call on the people of Kaduna State that Makarfi remains the hero, if there is anything, it is to give grand reception for leading the state successfully in the last general election.

“For clarity, Section 57 (7) provides that notwithstanding any other provision relating to discipline, no executive committee, at any level except the National Executive Committee, shall entertain any question of discipline as may relate or concern a member of the National Executive Committee, Deputy Governor or member of the National Assembly”.

Makarfi, a former Acting PDP National Chairman, was on Sunday allegedly suspended by the executives of Tudun Wada Ward in Makarfi LGA of Kaduna State over anti-party activities.
