VIDEO: One out of 12 suspended Anambra monarchs beg Obiano for forgiveness

Igwe MacAnthony Okonkwo, one of the 12 suspended traditional rulers in Anambra state has tendered an unreserved apology to Governor Willie Obiano.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Greg Obi, the commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs in a statement said the monarchs were suspended for travelling out of the state, without “consultation or approval”from the government.

Okonkwo, who is the ruler of Alor in Idemili South Council Area of the state tendered the apology in an interview with the state owned, Anambra Broadcasting Service.

His appeasement move came after the 12 rulers held a conference in Abuja, expressing surprise that they were punished by Governor Obiano and the Anambra Traditional Council.

The traditional rulers said at their conference on Thursday, that they went to Abuja to thank President Muhammadu Buhari, for all the good things his administration is doing in the South East.

But Okonkwo also revealed why the council and Obiano flashed them a yellow card: the rulers visit to Abuja was at the instance of Sir Arthur Eze, who has some issues with Obiano.

In the interview with Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS), Igwe Okonkwo regretted his actions for his failure to inform Obiano, as the Chief Security Officer of the state before embarking on the trip with others to Abuja.

He tried to massage the ego of Obiano, by praising him for his achievements.

He then appealed to the chairman of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe to tamper justice with mercy to intervene in the matter.

He also suggested that steps should be taken to reconcile Arthur Eze and Governor Obiano, both of them prominent citizens of the state.

  • Magu’s probe, suspension ‘a plus’ for Buhari’s government – Malami

Magu’s probe, suspension ‘a plus’ for Buhari’s government – Malami

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) has said the probe and subsequent suspension of the former acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a plus for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Malami said this on NTA’s ‘One-on-One’ programme on Friday night while reacting to questions from the host, Cyril Stober.

The AGF stated that the probe of the suspended EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, was evidence that no one was above the law.

Responding to a question on whether the probe was to settle personal scores, the Minister of Justice said he wasn’t the one probing the EFCC rather it was the Presidency that set up a panel to investigate the commission.

On whether the probe of the EFCC wasn’t a blow to the anti-corruption war, Malami said, “I wouldn’t like to be pre-emptive of the panel put in place by the President relating to an agency but within the context of the first leg of the question as to whether setting up a panel to look into the activities of an anti-corruption agency is a blow or a plus, I think to my mind, it is indeed a plus.

“It goes on to establish the tradition which this government is known for; a tradition of no fear or favour as far as investigating corruption cases or allegations are concerned. So, to my mind, it is indeed a plus that reinforces and re-establishes a tradition by which the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is known, re-established to the effect that no allegation of corruption can be swept under the carpet. So, it is indeed a plus and not a blow.”

Recall that President Buhari recently approved the suspension of the embattled former EFCC boss and about 11 other top officials of the Commission including the Secretary to the Commission, Ola Olukoyede.

The EFCC under Magu is alleged to have been unable to account for the interest accrued to recovered loot of N550bn.

  • Nigeria’s UFC Champion Kamoru Usman suspended for six months

Nigeria’s UFC Champion Kamoru Usman suspended for six months

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, has been handed a six-month medical suspension after breaking his nose against Jorge Masvidal.

Usman, nicknamed, The Nigerian Nightmare, suffered a broken nose as he retained his UFC welterweight title last weekend.

The 33-year-old is now set to miss six months of action while he is forced to recover.

Usman will also be forced to avoid any contact for at least three weeks while the nose heals.

Meanwhile, Masvidal, 35, will miss a month himself due to a forehead laceration sustained in his defeat.

The American took the fight on just six days’ notice but failed to pull off a miraculous win.

Masvidal has now been handed a 30-day medical suspension to allow a nasty gash on his face to heal.

As with Usman, he will be forced to avoid any contact work for three weeks.

Usman had been expected to next fight Gilbert Burns, his original opponent at UFC 251 before his positive test for coronavirus.

But Usman has insisted he has another ideal candidate on his mind – former two-weight world champion Georges St-Pierre.

The 39-year-old hasn’t fought in the Octagon since 2017 when he defeated Michael Bisping for the middleweight strap.

Asked who he would love to fight next, Usman told TMZ Sports: “Honestly I would have to say Georges St-Pierre.

“Right now we’re tied for the record, most consecutive wins in the welterweight division.

“Georges is a tough guy, Georges is a legend, Georges is a guy that’s been around for a while…

“[He] has put his time in and is considered as one of the best, and that’s where I aim to be.

“Georges can still do it, he proved it two years ago when he came back, I feel he’s still able to do it.

“I feel he’s still able to come in and be that opponent that people are unsure, like you know what, ‘we don’t know if Usman has got this one,’ and I think that Georges St-Pierre can be that guy.

“If Georges wants to do it, Georges can get it too.”

  • NSITF management rejects suspension, says letter written by Ngige not Buhari

NSITF management rejects suspension, says letter written by Ngige not Buhari

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has said that its management remains operational, despite being suspended by Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment.

Earlier, news circulated that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the suspension of Mr Adebayo Somefun, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), alongside NSITF’s Executive Director, Finance and Investment, Mr Jasper Ikedi Azuatalam, Executive Director, Operations, Mrs Olukemi Nelson and Executive Director, Administration, Alhaji Tijani Darazo Sulaiman.

In a letter dated addressed to Somefun, Ngige said President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the suspension of the management heads over “misappropriation and other gross misconduct”.

Somefun was then instructed to hand over to the most senior official in the board, and face a panel that would investigate procurement dealings of the agency from 2017 to 2020.

Reacting in a statement on Thursday, NSITF said the president has not given such a directive.

The statement reads: “We wish to state that President Muhammadu Buhari has not suspended the management of NSITF and has not made any such announcement, anywhere.

“For clarity, we received a letter from the Hon Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen Chris Ngige, stating that he is carrying out a procurement audit of NSITF, and that Management is suspended.

“We had noted that the Minister’s action is against President Buhari’s directive, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federations that no minister should suspend, or purport to sack any head of agency appointed by the president.

“The memo stressed that ministers should follow laid down procedures, by going through the governing board of the agencies, to make recommendations to the SGF, ahead of any action, if necessary.

“We respect the president’s commitment to due process, and are assured we shall be protected by it. Meanwhile, the NSITF management remains open to any form of investigation by the appropriate agencies, as it has nothing to hide.

NSITF said it had received many letters and petitions from the minister and that it would make communication available to the public and relevant authorities, if necessary.

It added that the “management of NSITF is still discharging its duties, as appointed by Mr President, and we ask all stakeholders to remain calm and focus, as all is well.”

  • Oshiomhole breaks silence on suspension, Giadom’s takeover, Obaseki’s resignation, others

Oshiomhole breaks silence on suspension, Giadom’s takeover, Obaseki’s resignation, others

The suspended National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said last night that claim by Deputy National Secretary Victor Giadom that he had taken over as acting chairman is against common sense.

According to him, the party is ruled by its guidelines.

He spoke on a Channels Television programme.

The Court of Appeal, he said, did not suspend the National Working Committee (NWC) from functioning and the constitution of the party states clearly who acts as the chairman in his absence.

He said: “My advice to my brother, Victor, is about common sense – in the absence of the Chairman, there is nothing in our rules and the court can only interpret the rules of the party and the Constitution of Nigeria. It serves to common sense that if the chairman is absent, it should be the deputy; in the absence of the deputy, it is the vice-chairman. How does the deputy secretary come in? As we speak, we have a secretary in the office. People should put God first, our party’s interest second, and our democracy deep in their hearts and not trying to use any externality to destabilise it.

“Everybody knows that we ought to resolve issues in line with the party’s rule. How can a deputy national secretary, assuming he was still one, claim to be the chairman?”

Oshiomhole said he accepted the judgment suspending him from office in good faith and will be meeting his lawyers on the next line of action.

He said: “It is not for you to choose whether to obey or not. I accepted the judgment in good faith. I am a product of the judiciary and I always tell people that if I am not a convict today, it is the courtesy of a courageous Bench and a very resourceful Bar. All my life has been of a struggle, people have always oppressed and harassed me and the court has always come to my aid even my being governor was courtesy of the court. My lawyers will advise me on the next line of action after studying the judgment. I thank their lordship for the judgment.”

According to him, there is no doubt about the resignation of the Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.

“Until 7pm yesterday, I remained the chairman of the APC. Before then, the governor of Edo State had voluntarily resigned his membership. That resignation has since been accepted. The screening has been completed and all that was left was done today by the members of NWC.

“We are 21 members in the NWC. Since the court has upheld what they described as suspension by my ward, I did not attend the meeting in obedience to the Court of Appeal but it did not suspend the functioning of the NWC and the constitution of the party states clearly who acts as the Chairman in the absence of the Chairman. The NWC met and about 16 out of 20 took some decisions to ensure all attempts to scuttle the primary election in Edo was not successful and went ahead to appoint those that will conduct the election,” he said.

  • COVID-19: Wike announces temporary suspension of lockdown in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor LGAs

COVID-19: Wike announces temporary suspension of lockdown in Port Harcourt, Obio/Akpor LGAs

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has announced the temporary lifting of the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas for two days only, with effect from Tuesday 12th May 2020.

Governor Wike made the announcement in a State-Wide broadcast last night. He said that the total lockdown will be lifted on Tuesday 12th May, 2020 and Wednesday, 13th May, 2020.

Governor Wike said the temporary lifting of the lockdown is for residents to restock foodstuffs and medicines to their homes.

Governor Wike said that the lockdown will be reinstated on Thursday, 14th May, 2020.

He said: “Consequently, we have given due consideration to the propositions on the way forward by well-meaning citizens of the State, and after a cautious review of the situation, decided to implement a partial relaxation of the lockdown measures, to enable residents to have some fresh air and replenish their foodstuffs and medicines.

“To this end, I hereby announce the temporary lifting of the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Governments Areas for two days only, with effect from Tuesday 12th May 2020.

All shops, supermarkets, and malls can open to the public for Tuesday and Wednesday, 12 and 13 May 2020.

“Similarly, all hospitals and banks can also open and provide full services to the public.

“While oil and gas companies are required to submit the list of their staff on essential duties to Government, note that there is no ban on the lifting of petroleum products from depots and other receptacles.

“The total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas will be reinstated on Thursday 14th May 2020 and remain until further notice.”

Governor Wike said all other established restrictions under the Executive Orders on social distancing are still in force.

He said: “Compulsory wearing of face mask or scarfs in vehicles and public places; Closure of all land, sea and air borders and entry routes into the State; and Closure of all open markets, including slaughters, hotels, guest houses, cinemas, bars and restaurants; and Ban on gathering, including public burials, weddings, and religious gathering of more than 50 persons. Once again, thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

“Please note that our enemy is invisible. Stay at home, maintain social distancing, wash your hands regularly and stay safe.

He said every measure the State Government has imposed was dictated by an assessment of the state’s situation, the trend of transmission and the conviction that it was the right thing to do in the circumstance.

“As a Government, we are doing our utmost best, in the face of daunting challenges, to prevent COVID-19 from taking hold in Rivers State; to stop any possible community transmission of this disease before it is too late.

“And we shall continue on this trajectory because the alternative would spell a greater disaster for our State and our people.

“More so, when these are not arbitrary measures but fully prescribed and backed by the ordinary laws of our State, especially, Executive Orders numbers: 1 to 6.

“So far, all our measures and actions are not arbitrary but fully prescribed, guided and backed by the ordinary laws of our State, especially Executive Order numbers 1 to 6, which apply equally to all persons throughout the State. As a Government, we are obliged to enforce our laws, and in the present circumstance, we have done so without fear or favour,” he said.

He added: “We equally made it loud and clear that in the fight against COVI/D-19 there would be no sacred cows; no double standards, and no sentiments of any kind, whether political, ethnic, religious, status, emotional or otherwise.

“In the last few days we have pursued with vigour and secured several convictions against those who intentional violated our COVID-19 containment laws in the same way others States are doing.

“The forfeited trucks to be auctioned by the Deputy Sherriff were not confiscated arbitrarily by the State Government, but by the orders of our Courts.

Governor Wike stated that the demolition of the two hotels in Eleme was done in line with extant laws.

He said: “Similarly, we acted against the hotelier because, apart from using the facility to jeopardize the lives of our citizens in violation of the extant law, the owner audaciously unleashed thugs lead by the Eleme Local Government Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party and inflicted severe injuries on our task-force members who went to enforce the law against the continued operation of the hotel.

“As we speak, nobody knows the fate of the lives of most of the victims of that brazen and deadly attack given the severity of the head injuries they sustained.

“And so, we’ve done no wrong as all our actions were taken in good faith and justified by, under and within the purview of the Executive Orders, which have neither been challenged nor set aside by any competent court of law.

The Governor said he remains focused on protecting Rivers people.

He said: “Therefore, while we welcome genuine criticisms directed towards strengthening our intervention measures; it is no use joining issues with uninformed critics and social media legal practitioners who, blinded and prodded by sheer politics, bias and hatred, have opted to demonized and paint our lawful and responsible actions in bad light.

“Granted that we may not have totally achieved our targets, but we are convinced that, so far, the lockdown and the other measures have impacted greatly in containing and preventing the onslaught of the pandemic on Rivers State.

“We therefore thank the entire people of Rivers State for the overwhelming understanding you have shown even as you continue to endure the pains of the restrictions on your wellbeing and fundamental freedoms.”

  • COVID-19 Lockdown: PDP demands immediate suspension of ATM, electricity charges

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the suspension of charges for use of ATM cards and low amount mobile fund transfers during the COVID-19 lockdown.

According to a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday in Abuja, the suspension of such charges should be part of the panacea to ease the burden on poor Nigerians during the lockdown.

The party called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to immediately open an arrangement with commercial banks to suspend the charges.

Ologbondiyan said the lockdown had subjected the majority of Nigerians to extensive use of ATM and mobile transfers for survival, making the suspension of charges on minimal transactions within this period of restriction highly imperative.

He said that the lifting of the charges within the period of COVID-19 pandemic would ease the burden on cash withdrawals by vulnerable citizens and encourage more Nigerians to support one another at this critical time.

“The PDP demands the CBN to immediately liaise with commercial banks and stimulate a special social sustenance modality to defray the cost of such charges, particularly to cover minimal transactions in favour of vulnerable Nigerians.

The party urges the federal government to activate similar social sustenance scheme to immediately defray electricity tariff, particularly in areas populated by low income and vulnerable Nigerians across the country within the period of the lockdown.

“The PDP calls on the federal government to show compassion on suffering Nigerians whose means of subsistence has been crippled by the lockdown, and immediately provide funds to electricity distribution companies to actuate the tariff suspension within this period.
