  • I didn’t purchase N300m bullet proof SUV – Wike

    I didn’t purchase N300m bullet proof SUV – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike has refuted claims of purchasing a N300 million Armoured Lexus LX600 SUV on assumption to office.

Wike made the rebuttal shortly after a visit to Metro Train Station, Abuja on Wednesday to inspect ongoing rehabilitation of Abuja Rail Mass Transport System.

Some sections of the media had published a picture of an Armored Lexus SUV model LX 600, fitted with ‘FCT – 01’ plate.

The reports claimed that the SUV, which cost more than N300 million, belonged to the new FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

But Wike refuted the claim, describing it as mere “mischief”, stressing that he was sworn in on Monday and had not even sat down to work yet.

He said that all he did was interact with staff and today (Wednesday), went to the Metro Train Station, Abuja with the Minister of State for FCT to see things for themselves.

“We are now going back to the office to interact with each of the departments in the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

“But I have seen what is going on in the social media, how the FCTA Permanent Secretary bought a bullet proof car of N300 million that I am using.

“So, I want you people to go hit your hand there (on the car) and see whether it is a treated car.

“With all due respect, people should be careful not to destroy other people,” he said.

He explained that when he resumed, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Adesola Olusade had told him that the FCTA has cars that the ministers would use.

“And the car we use is this (pointing at a regular Lexus SUV).

“I have never approved for any car to be bought and I have not used any official bullet proof car.

“I am not using a bullet proof car as FCT Minister, so we should report the right thing, and not destroy ourselves.

“I want you to take a look at the car I came with, the one with the flag and see whether it is a bullet proof car”, he asked the journalists at the scene.

In a related development, the Director Press, Office of the Minister, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, dismissed claims by some media outfits that Wike plans to demolish 6,000 houses across 30 settlements in Abuja, including Wadata Plaza.

“We would like to categorically state that these stories are entirely false and without any basis,” Ogunleye said.

He explained that the story on the demolition of 6,000 houses was reported by a national daily newspaper on Aug. 22, with the caption “Abuja land: FG may revoke land allocations, demolish 6000 buildings, slums”.

He added that another mainstream newspaper also published what he described as an “irritating story”, with a caption, “Wadata Plaza will go down, Reactions trail Wike’s demolition threat”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Minister did not in any of his pronouncements list the areas or the number of illegal houses to be removed.

“Rather, his emphasis has always been that illegal settlements and structures would be removed for the greater good of the public.

“Equally vexing” is the headline from a reputable broadcast station saying, “I will fix Abuja in 6 days” and attributed the same to the FCT Minister.

“We wish to state quite clearly that at no time did the Honourable Minister say this or allude to this phrase in any way. This headline, therefore, is borne purely out of mischief,” he said.

The director press pointed out that such sensational reporting not only misleads the public but also undermines the vital role that accurate and well-researched journalism plays in society.

Car wash operator absconds with customer’s SUV in Lagos

The Ogun State Police Command have arrested a Lagos-based car wash operator, Idris Ayotunde, after he absconded with his customer’s car.

He was said to have fled with the car to Ogun State.

The OND holder from a polytechnic in one of the South-West states, reportedly started the car wash business at Jimoh bus stop, Shasha, Akowonjo, Lagos State, a few months ago.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed these in a statement on Sunday.

The PPRO said the car owner took it for vacuum cleaning and handed over the key to the suspect.

“Since he did not have vacuum cleaner in his car wash, he decided to take it to another car wash nearby. But he changed his mind on the road and bolted away with the car.

“It was on his way to Ibadan where he intended to dispose the car that he was arrested.

  • Rivers Rep dumps PDP for APC, rejects Wike’s SUV gift

Rivers Rep dumps PDP for APC, rejects Wike’s SUV gift

The member representing Tai-Oyigbo-Eleme Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Chisom Dike, has dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmaker also admitted rejecting his share of the Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) the governor recently gave to all federal lawmakers from the state.

He said he could not accept the gift because of the deplorable condition of all the roads in Oyigbo, his primary constituency.

Describing the roads in his area as a death trap and impassible, Dike said his people were suffering untold hardship following their inability to access the state capital.

He said the people in the area were traveling with heavy cost as a journey that was supposed to be 30 minutes would take them over two hours.

He explained that all efforts to get the attention of the state to fix the roads failed adding that the fortunes of the area had not changed despite having people occupying different positons in the state government.

The lawmaker who spoke in an interview with The Nation said: : “The state of roads in my constituency made me to reject the car gift from the governor. I represent Eleme, Oyigbo and Tai. We have made a lot of representation to the government but none had been taken. Currently, Oyigbo is impassable. You need to travel through two local government areas before you get to Oyigbo.

“A journey that is supposed to be 15 to 20 minutes will take you two hours. It has brought so much hardship to our people because they can’t access Port Harcourt. Our people have been mounting pressure on their representatives in the state government. They have also been mounting pressure on me to do something especially as I had represented them in the state House of Assembly for four years.

“My former party is in power in Rivers State alongside other indigenes from our area but we could not effect any change. My local government is where the PDP party chairman comes from and other leaders. Everything stops on the table of the governor and the governor has his priorities.

“We wonder why our area is not his priority. We hear about projects but the main road to Oyigbo is impassable. Our local government has many power plants including the Afam Power Plant and Shell gas plant. So, for me it is not justifiable to receive such car gift. Which road will I drive it on?”

Dike said he had raised the issue of the bad roads at the federal level adding that it was receiving some attention.

On why he defected to the APC, he said he never had access to the governor and could not discuss issues affecting his people with him.

He said: “I don’t have access to the governor. The normal setting is to have access to the governor to discuss issues affecting your people. I was once with the governor and he told me that he didn’t know me.

“I was shocked when he said that because I worked for the party and he was instrumental to my going to the House of Assembly. I knew the reason why I couldn’t have access to him. So, I felt I was no longer wanted in the party.

“I consulted all stakeholders before I defected and most of them were in support of the decision. There should be a place you will have a peace of mind. I never had the peace of mind I needed in PDP. They were always blackmailing me before the governor and that explains the reason why I couldn’t have access to him.”

Aigbe’s new car is a Mercedes Benz GLE Coupe which is sold for about N26M according to popular car website Checki.
TheNewsGuru recalls that Mercy Aigbe recently recounted that before she got into the industry, she admired Sola Sobowale and Liz Benson.
She said, “Coming into the industry, there were two people I admired a lot— Liz Benson and Sola Sobowale. Liz Benson was just so beautiful and she still is. I absolutely loved her back then. I also loved the way Sola Sobowale interpreted her roles. She inspires me whenever I see her on a movie set.”
Describing the first encounter she had with Sobowale, Aigbe said, “Before I got into the industry, I admired Sola Sobowale because she knows her onions. One day, I got a call to come on set for a movie titled, ‘Ohun Oko So Mi Da’.
“The movie was produced by Aunty Sola and I was shivering when I got to the set. I asked myself, ‘Would I be able to act in the presence of my role model?’ I went to a corner and prayed to God and told myself, ‘This is my opportunity. I shouldn’t allow Aunty Sola overshadow me. I should let my star shine.’
“Unfortunately for me, in that particular scene, I wasn’t meant to talk at all. I acted the role of her husband’s secretary and was dating her husband. She came to my character’s house to warn her. I was not supposed to say anything but I thought that as an up-and-coming actress, she would just kill my ‘star’ if I didn’t say anything. Guess what I did. I gave myself lines. As she was ranting, I was reacting to her rants. When she held me, I put my hands inside her brassiere. She just told the director to end the scene at that point, asking where they found ‘this kind of girl’.”

(Video): 5-year-old boy stopped by police while driving parents’ SUV to California to buy Lamborghini with $3

A 5-year-old boy left a police officer shocked after he found him driving his parents’ car during a traffic stop.

Trooper Rick Morgan noticed a driver inside an SUV driving erratically and switching between lanes on a freeway in Ogden, Utah just before noon on Monday. When he pulled the car over, Morgan said he was shocked to find a young boy behind the wheel.

My speedometer showed 32 miles-per-hour,’ Morgan told Fox 13. ‘It amazed me that when he heard my siren, he did pull over and stop.’

‘When I got to the window and the window came down, I wasn’t quite sure what to think. It was pretty clear when the window came down, it was a young, very underage driver.’

When asked where he had been driving to, the boy replied ‘California.’

The 5-year-old reportedly told troopers that he left the house following an argument with his mother after she told him she wouldn’t buy him a Lamborghini.

Police say he had been trying to reach his sister’s house in California and had planned to buy a Lamborghini when he got there, with the three dollars in his purse.

‘It likely would have been much worse had he gone much further,’ Morgan told the publication. ‘He was sitting on the front edge of his seat so he could reach the brake pedal.’

The boy has since been reunited with his parents.
