National Honour: Group hails Tinubu’s decision to honour Reps Speaker With GCON

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors Network (RHAN) has congratulated the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on his conferment of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) title by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Ochima E. Ochima, the group expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for elevating the Speaker from Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to GCON.

With this singular action, he said the President has reinforced the constitutional principle of equality between the two chambers of the National Assembly, promoting a more harmonious and balanced legislative environment.

Ochima also said that the President has corrected the errors of past administrations, setting the nation on the path of progress.

“We’re deeply grateful to President Tinubu for recognising the tireless efforts of Rt. Hon. Abbas, This move sends a powerful message about his administration’s commitment to recognizing excellence and promoting national unity,” Ochima said.

“We commend President Tinubu for his leadership and vision, which have been evident in his recent initiatives, including his commitment to public order and civil service excellence.”

Ochima also praised the Speaker for his impact and dedication to the welfare of Nigerians, adding that this prestigious recognition is a testament to his selfless service to the nation.

“Abbas’ leadership has been marked by significant achievements, including creating 134 Standing Committees from the previous 109 to enhance legislative oversight and accountability,” he said.

“The Speaker has also empanelled investigative committees to tackle high-profile corruption and misconduct in public offices, advocating for good governance practices.

“The 10th House of Representatives has passed nearly 100 bills under Abbas’ leadership, including the groundbreaking Electricity Act 2023 and Electricity Act Amendment Bill 2024, signed into law by President Tinubu. These legislative milestones have been hailed as futuristic and pivotal in shaping Nigeria’s development.

“We’re reminded of Abbas’ remarkable career trajectory. From his humble beginnings as a primary school teacher to his tenure as a lecturer at Kaduna State University, Abbas has consistently demonstrated his passion for education and public service,” he added.

“His landmark contributions in the National Assembly are a shining example of his tireless efforts to promote the welfare and interests of Nigerians.

“As we congratulate Abbas on this feat, we’re inspired by his unrelenting passion for Nigeria’s development. We look forward to his continued impactful service to the nation, driven by his commitment to the Nigerian masses.

“Thank you, President Tinubu, for celebrating Abbas’ remarkable achievements, and thank you, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, for your tireless service to our great nation”.

  • Tajudeen Abass: A dutiful Speaker at work – By Owei Lakemfa

Tajudeen Abass: A dutiful Speaker at work – By Owei Lakemfa

AS a young man, I quite often heard the Latin phrase: “Vox populi, vox dei”, meaning: “The voice of the people is the voice of God”. Democracy, whatever the brand, is supposed to uphold this.

But the Nigerian people might be too busy to speak; too hungry to talk. Under such circumstances, they need to remain silent. But who better to speak for the people than the National Assembly? That is why parliamentarians are assembled: to speak for their otherwise preoccupied constituents.

In any case, if a country of 220 million people were to allow the people speak, there will be a cacophony. The Tower of Babel would be a child’s play. So, for order and democracy, good governance and maintenance of discipline, if the people must speak, it should be through the mouths of their elected or selected parliamentarians in the National Assembly. After all, the people drink champagne through the throat of their leaders.

This must be the reason, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, introduced his profoundly thoughtful Counter Subversion Bill and other related draft legislation on July 23, 2024.

Trust Nigerians not to listen to simple instructions such as speaking only through parliamentarians. So, the Speaker’s bill, understandably, had to in effect, suspend sections of the Constitution such as the right to assembly, free speech and movement.

Equally, given the fact that governance is such a tasking job that requires the full concentration of the leaders, the Taju bill seeks to stop politicians in power from being distracted or even insulted. So the bill provides that Nigerians should be jailed up to two years or pay a fine of N4 million for any action considered to demean or embarrass a public official.

Does this sound familiar? Maybe not to the Gen Zee generation. But to mine, it was a law we lived with under the military. It was called Decree 4 of 1984 under which if a story, even if true in all material particular, embarrassed a public official, the culprit went to jail for one year. It was a decree promulgated by General Muhammadu Buhari, as he then was. So, for that law and, the Taju bill, the truth is not an amour.

I have to state now that the Speaker is not well advised on the bill and that the law he wishes to push through is in aid of fascism. If I were to say so after the bill becomes law, I may write my columns in the next two years from jail as this comment might be deemed to embarrass the man who is Number Four in the country’s political hierarchy.

The Speaker also seeks a three-year jail term or a N5 million fine for “disrespecting” constituted authorities. This obviously will be quite good to shut the wide mouths of those whose stock in trade is to be disrespectful to our revered leaders or, even make disrespectful skits. They need to be taught that governance is not a joke.

The Speaker is not selfish, so the category of those to be protected under this section are not just our leaders at local government, state and federal levels, but also the leadership of “a community, religion, lawful group”. This means that wherever you are, be careful not to insult leaders at any level, otherwise you may be headed for the jail house.

Nigerians, since colonial times, have been known for protests. Even after independence, the protests continued, especially by students, youths and human rights groups. We have witnessed protests against continued colonial rule, the Anglo-Nigeria Defence Pact, increases in school fees, the IMF Structural Adjustment Programme, fuel price hikes, military misrule, police brutality and, this month, against hunger. All these, under the bill, would become criminal activities.

Clause 3 of the Tajudeen bill, reads: “A person who engages in illegal road traffic functions, illegal roadblocks, imposition of illegal curfews, conducting illegal processions, checkpoints, and other similar acts, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N2,000,000 or imprisonment for a term of five years or both.”

Pro-democracy activists like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are lucky this type of law did not exist during the fight against military dictatorship and for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Otherwise they would have cooled their heels behind bars.

Many Nigerians are fond of using symbols that promote other countries rather than Nigeria. For instance, they wear T-shirts like: ‘I Love New York’. Some hoteliers hoist the flags of various countries and protesters even carry the flags of other countries. All these unpatriotic acts which tend to show loyalty to other countries or promote them, would under this bill, earn 10 years imprisonment or a fine of N5 million.

Some Nigerians always complain about marginalisation. Some even advocate leaving the federation. With this bill, any such agitation has to be done in jail. It states that any statement or action for separatist agitation, attracts a fine of N10,000,000 or imprisonment for a term of 25 years or both.

The bill also specifies a fine of N5m, a 10-year prison sentence, or both for anyone found guilty of destroying national symbols, refusing to recite the national anthem and pledge.

Splits occur amongst Nigerians and their groups. Under this bill, anyone who forcefully takes over any place of worship, town hall, school, premises, public or private place, arena, or a similar place, for whatever reason, can be fined N5m, or imprisoned for 10 years or both.

Many civil society organisations are known to receive foreign donations. The bill seeks to criminalise this. It states that a “person who receives financial or political support from a foreign organisation, group or country that is not compatible with the interest, development, security and progress of Nigeria, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N15m or imprisonment for a term of 20 years or both.”

If you are a non-conformist with a propensity to disregard, disobey, or disrespect constituted authority, rules, regulations, order or contravene the law wilfully, under this bill, you are on conviction to spend three years imprisonment at the first instance, and seven years for a subsequent offence or to a fine of N5m or both.

I am not sure if Speaker Abbas read the bill he presented or reflected on it. Otherwise, he would not have included many of the clauses, some of which, quite honestly, are not just absurd but are incomprehensible in a sane society.

He has now announced the withdrawal of the bill. But whether this is a true realisation of the satanic nature of his bill, or a tactical withdrawal is left to be seen. Meanwhile, We Move!

Speakership: 290 Reps-elect endorse Abass/Kalu joint ticket ahead proclamation

    …as all 55 S’south Lawmakers-Elect adopt Abbas/Kalu as consensus candidates

The joint ticket of Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, as announced by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on May 7th has 290 Reps-elect already in its kitty ahead proclamation on National Assembly tomorrow.

TheNewsGuru.com reports the joint ticket received further boost, following its unanimous adoption by all the 55 elected Representatives from the South-South geopolitical zone.

The adoption which took place at the residence of one of the longest serving members of the House, Hon. Nicholas Mutu, (PDP, Delta) on Sunday night in Abuja has now brought the number of lawmakers backing the ticket to over 290.

The event was witnessed by all members of the Caucus except two, with the Caucus made up of elected legislators from Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers respectively.

Addressing the Speakership candidate and his Deputy, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas PhD, and Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu at the meeting, one of the leaders of the Caucuses from the zone, Hon. Unyime Idem from Akwa Ibom stated that the zone has come to a point where it must key into the vision and agenda of the Abbas/Kalu ticket, vigorously promoted by the Joint Task – 10th Assembly Coalition.

Idem, who’s also a zonal coordinator of the Joint Task, a coalition of 8 political parties that won seats in the 10th Assembly, expressed gratitude to his colleagues from the South South for trusting him with the task of conveying their decision to the Joint Task.

“I consider it a great privilege welcoming our incoming Speaker and Deputy by the grace of God. As a coordinator of the Joint Task it gives me pleasure to announce to your Excellencies that we have 55 out 55 members of the South South Caucus who have penned their signatures in support of the joint ticket.

“I therefore want to assure you that we will have the whole 55 as they are going to appear in the chamber on Tuesday to give you 55 votes from the South South geopolitical zone,” Hon. Idem said.

In response to the announcement, the co-chairman of the Joint Task – 10th Assembly, Hon. Usman Bello Kumo (APC, Gombe), thanked Hon. Idem for his leadership so far in the course of the campaign.

“This 55-over-55 is something we are not surprised, given the level of support we have enjoyed from key members of the Caucus including yourself who have been with us in this journey right from the start.

“As I stand before you, raised by destiny and privilege to steer this ship, I have my elder brothers with me particularly from the South-South such as Hon Kingsley Chinda. I want to say that the zone has paid its due and what’s remaining now is for Hon. TJ Abbas and Kalu to reciprocate at the end of the day. And I want to assure you that by the character of the incoming Speaker and his Deputy, you will not be disappointed,”. Hon. Kumo said.

The Deputy Speakership candidate, Benjamin Kalu expressed gratitude to the zonal Caucus for believing in their struggle to institutionalise a legislature anchored on the principles of equity and inclusiveness, adding that “what we started like a mustard seed has germinated and grown to this level of acceptance and support from our brothers and sisters across the regions of the country.”

“I stand here also as part of the South and I said to myself that getting the South East and South West to endorse us, wasn’t going to be complete for me without having the South South, and thank God the South South has completed the circle by adopting us and we are so very grateful.

“I want to appreciate you for coming in your numbers and you have also invested in this project, invested money-wise even when some people didn’t believe in us then.

“But many notable South South lawmakers have shown great interest and commitment with some appearing on TV to shout it to the world about this project and today we are witnessing the result of that effort,” Kalu said.

The former image maker of the House also spoke glowingly about the character and qualities of his principal, Tajudeen Abbas, saying: “and let me tell you that the man that I will be supporting in the course of the Assembly God willing from Tuesday is a man that I was told is hardworking and I have seen it in this last few weeks. I was told about his detribalised nature, that I have also witnessed. I was told about his ethics and transparency, I have encountered them. All the qualities stated about this man, I have witnessed in his actions.

“And I want to tell you all here today that this is the right man to follow and you will not regret your actions.,” Kalu said, recalling that it was Hon. Abbas’ sterling qualities that inspired his Deputy chairman on the Land Transport Committee, a lawmaker also from the South South to start lobbying retuning members including the immediate past Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, pleading that his chairman, Hon. Abbas be supported to become the next Speaker.

In his words of appreciation to members of the Caucus for unanimously adopting himself and his running mate, Rt. Hon. Abbas PhD acknowledged the pivotal role colleagues from the South South have played in bringing about the idea behind his Speakership ambition.

“I have come here to tonight to say thank you, thank you to people that love me. I have been to many regions in the country where I’ve been shown love, but that which I have experienced from the South South in the course of this journey has been something else.

“I can mention so many names who have stood by me right from day one including my deputy chair of the committee. And I want to assure you that I will not take this generousity and solidarity for granted,” he said.

  • NASS leadership: Why I chose Abass to be next speaker – Gbajabiamila opens up

NASS leadership: Why I chose Abass to be next speaker – Gbajabiamila opens up

    …to perfect our legislative gains

…says I regret installing Tambuwal as Speaker in 2011

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has revealed the reason behind his decision to support Hon. Tajudeen Abbas as the chosen candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the position of Speaker of the 10th House was to harp on legislative gains recorded by his administration.

Gbajabiamila also expressed regrets installing Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as Speaker in 2011, he explained that for the 10th House he decided to support the person that is least closest to him, in person of Hon. Abbas.

The Speaker spoke for the first time on the candidacy of Hon. Abbas as Speaker and Hon. Benjamin Kalu as Deputy Speaker since they were choice of the ruling APC, at the meeting of members of the Joint Task-10th House, held in Abuja Wednesday night.

This meeting is a continuation of the one held last week where the APC chosen candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker were unveiled and present at the meeting was the Speaker, also the APC candidate for the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, Hon. Ado Doguwa among others.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) vividly recalls that the Joint Task-10th House is a group of members-elect from across the 8 political parties who had agreed to support any candidate the APC chooses for the Speaker’s position.

Gbajabiamila who affirmed his loyalty to the party and that he would never go against the decision of the party; however said his decision doesn’t translate to hatred for other aspirants.

He said: “I stand before you here as a testament of what party loyalty and consistency can do in your life. I have a story to tell and I am sure everybody has one story or the other to tell. My story may not be unique. I came here on the platform of a party. We don’t have independent candidacy in Nigeria. It’s not in our constitution or laws. Perhaps, one day we will get to that point. But my core belief is that if I come here on the platform of a party, there is a saying all over the world that your party is always supreme.

“You will disagree with your party just like people will disagree amongst family members but at the end of the day, the party is an organized structure. Let no one kid you. I am here to offer advice. I have been the pioneer leader of what they called the House project when we installed Tambuwal as speaker. I regret it. The incoming speaker will tell more of the travails and the problems we went through for 4 years when we did that the first and the second time. And I want you to hold that and start comparison to what the last 4 years have been.

“Now, when you look at those two sessions and the last one that is just rounding up, you have the benefit of being able to compare and then, you take an informed decision.

“Not when somebody comes and tells you no, no, the Independence of the legislature cannot be compromised, that’s hogwash. Nobody is compromising the Independence of the legislature. The least person that will do it is me. But the fact that your party says this is where we are going, it doesn’t mean you are compromising the Independence of the legislature. Many of us are new here. People will talk to you. They will cajole you, say all sorts of things in flowery and romantic language but at the end of the day, we have to be mindful of one thing. The party we represent has its leaders.

“The governors from the state whether we like it or not, are very powerful.

“You can do your own personal bidding today. I share these things just to advise from my own experience. In 2015, I ran for the speakership of the House of Representatives. The party nominated me.

“The whole world was sure that I was going to win that race. We lost by about 6 votes. A few of our party members worked against me and combined with the PDP at the time.

“Four years later, I ran again and won that election with 284 votes, the highest in history of the Nigerian parliament. And what did I do, I think time has come for me to say one or two things I would not have ordinarily say. What did I do? I gave the chairmanship of perhaps the most powerful committee in any legislature in the world to one of the prime movers who fought against me and worked against the party at the time.

“Not only did I give him that committee, I turned my face away and gave him a free hand just like I gave to every committee chairman. If I don’t support you today, we all have to fear God, it’s for a reason. It’s not because I have a problem with you.

“It’s not because I don’t like you. It’s because as I stand here today, for those who know me, I just won my sixth term, perhaps the oldest legislator except for one. It’s because I eat, drink and sleep and wake up with the legislature in my heart.

“That’s my constituency and I love that institution so much. So, I decided to support a person that’s least closest to me of everybody that is running because I saw in him a man with tremendous capacity.”

He therefore urged the opposition parties’ members-elect to support Abass and Kalu to emerge as the presiding officers, stressing they will be carried along.

Earlier in his remarks, the APC candidate for President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio charged the members-elect to be mindful of government.

He said: “Yesterday, I met the party I actually left a sentence with them or thereabouts, should I leave the sentence with you? In your daily dealings. My late mother told me that I should be aware of the 3Gs: The first G is God; the second G is Gun and the third G is Government.

“The first G is God Almighty. The second G is what? Gun and the third one is Government. May you conduct yourself mindful of admonition of my late mother, by respecting the 3Gs particularly the Government.”

In his remarks at the meeting, the APC speaker nominee, Abass urged the members-elect to engage in constructive criticism, saying he was chosen because of his pedigree, even as he also denied sharing the committees.

According to him, rebellion against the party will not work.

“Mr speaker has not had discussion on interests in the 10th Assembly. The speaker’s support is based on my pedigree and capacity. He believes I would sustain the achievements of the ninth assembly. Let the contestants engage you on the issues. Is he competent, is he transparent, does he have the right temperament, is he just and fair? These are the right questions. If anyone is trying to drag you to go for another house project, be mindful. In the past, it did not work, in the 8th Assembly it did not work, what makes you think that in the 10th Assembly under a veteran politician like Asiwaju it will work? If you are here to take dividends of democracy to your people, if you are here to contribute your own quota in lawmaking, believe me rebellion against government should not be one of those things you should do. What you need is constructive engagement. We need a guided cooperation between the two tiers of government. So, please take note on that. It is a lie that committees have already been shared among certain members”, he said.

Also speaking, his deputy nominee, Kalu from Abia State called for synergy amongst the political parties.

“At this time, a single view will not give us a balanced approach to solve our hydra-headed needs. Joint task is raising a call today and saying come, let us work together as a parliament to give to Nigerians what is best. It’s not about any party. Today, I join my colleagues to say this is your home. The home where you will get leaders that go beyond presiding officers. What you do today on these two weeks with us will determine how high you go because you will not achieve alone but we will join our hands to your own hands. We will help you uphold problems of your constituencies making sure that inequality that exists between the old members and the new members are dissolved so that participatory, inequality would be ended where the voices of various Constituencies could be heard on the floor of the parliament.

“We are assuring you, my principal has told me that over and over again that we would give you equal platform to showcase the need for which you stood to be elected for your communities. All you have to do is to work with us and together we will tell Nigerians that elementary sovereignty is achievable just like the current leadership has pushed for it, we will sustain it.

“Together we will tell Nigerians that impartiality of the Speaker is achievable and sustainable just as the Speaker that is here has said.

“Together we will tell Nigerians that the inequalities that we will balance we would also include gender inequalities. Together we will tell Nigerians that we will innovate and to transform through legislative intervention”, he added.

  • Speakership: Why Tajudeen Abass must be rejected now, True Democrats tell members-elect

Speakership: Why Tajudeen Abass must be rejected now, True Democrats tell members-elect

The coalition of True Democrats at the weekend rose from an emergency meeting opposing the ongoing moves to impose Dr Tajudeen Abass as Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

National Coordinator of the group, Dr Mustapha Yusuf in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja argued that the move is antithetical to the tenets of democracy and the rule of law.

The group warned House of Representatives members elect to guard against any action that would compromise the independence of the legislature.

The group called on members elect to freely choose from among aspirants jostling for the seat of the Speaker of the House of Representatives based on their pedigree level of acceptability, competence and experience over the years.

The group thereby urged the President Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the APC to drop the idea of imposing Tajudeen Abass on members of the House in the interest of peace and tranquility in the country.

The group noted: “The President Elect must not allow anti democratic forces not to cajole him into interfering in a function exclusively provided for the legislators by the Nigerian Constitution.

“Those behind it are doing so for their own personal and selfish biddings which is inimical
    to our nations democracy.

“For those who crafted the word democracy and indeed separation of powers. The idea is to have an independent arm of government called the legislature for the purpose of providing checks and balances in such a manner to avoid the concentration of powers in one body as this would lead to usurp of powers and consequently degenerate to dictatorship, tyranny and operation.

“Section 50 (1a) and (1b) is clear and unambiguous as it states that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves.

“This simply implies that any other person or persons or group of persons nominating the principal officers of both houses other than the representatives themselves is Null, Void and Unconstitutional, therefore amounts to an aberration which tantamount to usurping the powers of the legislators thereby exposing the fragile democracy of Nigeria to jeopardy.

“We must do things the right way. We must not allow imposition of principal officers of the national Assembly on our legislators.”

  • 10th NASS: I am competent to be Speaker – Rep Abbas

10th NASS: I am competent to be Speaker – Rep Abbas

Rep. Tajudeen Abbas (APC-Kaduna), the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 10th House of Representatives Speakership, has said that he is competent for the job ahead.

Abbas said this while speaking to newsmen at the end of the meeting of the Joint Task, a group of lawmakers pushing for his emergence on Tuesday in Abuja

He said: “I feel elated my party considered me for the job. I feel inspired, because I believe that if the party is going to use competence as a yardstick, I’m the right person to be picked.”

He said for the fact that the party did what was expected they would do, “I feel very elated and satisfied.”

Asked if he has started reaching out to some aggrieved aspirants who were not happy with his choice as a consensus candidate, he said, “We are reaching out to them.

“We are in the process, we have reached out to so many, and we will continue reaching out to all of them and before the end of next week, I assure you we will reach out to all aspirants.”

Abbas said he would implore them and asked them to come on board, so they could together work for the good of Nigeria.

The lawmaker said he would officially declare his intention next week in a 16 points agenda.

According to him, in that agenda, you will see all the areas we are going to work on in the 10th Assembly then you will know what we have for members and for this country.

Similarly, Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC-Abia), the APC consensus for the Deputy Speakership, said: ”I feel good. I feel highly elated that my party considered me to go for this position.”

He said with his choice from South East, the APC has commenced strategy for the 2027 elections by making sure that they have a foot in the region.

He said what the party had done with his nominations was in the spirit of inclusion, adding that the South East would feel the power of cohesion and national loyalty.

This he said would be driven by virtue of inclusion that has taken place, adding that it was a wise decision to include the South East people in the structure of the new Government.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Joint Task group, Rep. Bello Kumo, said the group would try as much as possible to ensure a rancour-free friendship and family in the 10th Assembly.

He said there was the need to bring all members-elect to the general meeting to highlight the basis for the existence of the group.

“What we are doing is to partner with you and ensure that we have a stable 10th Assembly like other previous leaders and assemblies enjoyed.

  • 10th NASS: APC urged to reverse endorsement of Akpabio, Abass

10th NASS: APC urged to reverse endorsement of Akpabio, Abass

A group under the aegis of Renewed Hope Professionals, (RHP) has urged the All Progressive Congress (APC) to reverse the endorsements of “anointed candidates’ in the National Assembly leadership race.

This is contained in a statement signed by RHP  Coordinator, Mr Kinu Kabirwa.

The group said that endorsing a candidate violates the provisions of Section 50 sub section 1b of the Constitution.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC on Monday, announced Sen. Godswill Akpabio and Rep. Tajudeen Abass as consensus candidates for Senate President and Speaker positions respectively.

The group called on the President-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu to reverse the decision of the NWC to allow for the independence of the legislature.

They said going by the endowment, the North-West would control two powerful positions in the next political dispensation leaving out North-Central and South-East.

”Democracy is now under serious threat with this imposition concocted by the outgoing by the NWC of APC which will further compound the grave political situation in Nigeria.

”As a group of professionals with the interest of APC at heart we plead with the President-Elect to immediately nullify this organised crime imposed on lawmakers and allow a free level playing ground for the legislators to pick their leaders.

“It’s an abberation that must be quickly checkmated before it develops into an hydread monster capable of turning the legislature into an unwarranted war zone over the personal interests of few persons in the party,” the group said.

They questioned the selection process of the NWC which endorsed Abbas as speaker from a state which produced only four reps-elect.

”Was competence, equity, fairness and fairness considered in the scheme of things or it was just an outright imposition to further truncate our shaky democracy?

”The above questions are begging for answers,” they said.

The group said that offices of the senate president and the speaker should not be used for political compensation.
