  • What Tambuwal, Saraki, Ahmed’s defection mean to us – APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it is neither distracted nor surprised by the defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki; Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed and Aminu Tambuwal of Kwara and Sokoto States; National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi; and others from the party.

In the first official reaction, APC said the defectors had the right and freedom to pursue their political ambitions wherever they desired. In the statement by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, the party also saluted the resolution of the defectors to come openly and declare where they belonged.

The party advised Saraki, Ahmed, Tambuwal, Abdullahi and the others to maintain in their respective environments the spirit and atmosphere of “freedom created by the APC, which enabled them to leave without let or hindrance.”

APC Neither Surprised Nor Disturbed by Defections

The defection of Senate President Bukola Saraki; Governors Abdulfatah Ahmed and Aminu Tambuwal of Kwara and Sokoto States; National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi; and others, to the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) neither surprises nor distracts the All Progressives Congress (APC). Every follower of events in recent times could decipher the signs that foretold the exit of Saraki, Tambuwal, Ahmed, Abdullahi, from our great party.

We thank them for their contributions to the APC for the period they were with us. We also salute their courage to openly declare where they belong, as we had always advised.

APC is a party founded and run on the principles of freedom, sincerity, and forthrightness. Saraki and the others have the freedom of association and the right to pursue their political ambitions wherever they deem fit.

Our advice and hope is that those who have left would also have the courage to inspire in their respective political environments the atmosphere of unencumbered freedom created by the APC, which enabled them to leave without let or hindrance.

As a party, our attention is on the matter in hand, the 2019 general election. We are united and focused, with an eye to continuation of our winning streak in all elections this year, next year, and beyond. And we will win!

To our members in Kwara, Sokoto and the other 34 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), remain steadfast and courageous. Encourage one another in our streets teeming with APC members and supporters from North to South, and East to West.

Tambual urges Nigerians to reject Buhari’s ‘prison-yard democracy’

Governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to reject what he describes as “prison-yard democracy.

Tambuwal who was indirectly lambasting President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government condemned in his own terms what he described as the ‘rascality’ and high-handedness of some security agencies against democratic institutions”.

The former speaker, made the assertion in a statement he made available to journalists on on Tuesday July 31 the state of the nation over recent happenings in Benue state and Abuja, where security agencies reportedly meddled in the affairs of both the Benue state and national legislatures

His said: “Nigerians must, in strong terms, say no to prison-yard democracy, where the rights of the citizenry are shackled to the caprices of a few, as if we now run a nation of helpless inmates.

If the people of Nigeria are so unfortunate to endure the growling nightmare occasioned by deprivation of most things that a democracy should ordinarily provide; If they are now accustomed to the pangs of hunger, unemployment, shabby infrastructure, poor healthcare and general hopelessness, they should, in the interest of democracy and the youths, stand against anything that has the potential of robbing them of their inalienable rights to live and make choices as free citizens.”

“These are unfortunate incidents, an aberration, a reprehensible attack on the fundamental human rights and privileges of fellow Nigerians and a direct attack on our fledgling democracy. We should condemn this crass and impudent exhibition of uncivilized conduct, so that we can keep peace and maintain a civilized society.

“Democracy is about freedom, of choice and association. It is about the people and the supremacy of the will of the people. Democracy, loses its essential value when the overall interest of the people takes a back seat in any supposedly democratic setting”, the governor said.

He adds that legitimate political choices and movements, including cross-carpeting, are part of a democratic enterprise, saying: “Any attempt to bully people out of their legitimate, democratic choices is a war against democracy, the rights of the citizenry, that power this unique people-oriented system of governance.”

Tambuwal said: “I also call on our leaders at all levels, to guard their utterances, in order not to drive our nation further down the path of divisiveness and ethnic/religious mistrust. Let us water our democracy, using the fountains of equity, fairness and justice for all.”

  • Mass defection looms in APC as Saraki, Ortom, Tambuwal hold exit talks with PDP

Mass defection looms in APC as Saraki, Ortom, Tambuwal hold exit talks with PDP

Touted to be a prayer session for the late mother of former PDP Chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje, Ilorin yesterday received some of the of the aggrieved APC members [Reformed-All Progressives Congress(R-APC)] and other bigwigs in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Prominent politicians in the gathering include Senate President, Bukola Saraki;Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike and his counterpart in Benue, Samuel Ortom among others.

According to sources at the meeting, though some of the politicians had joined the eighth Fidau prayer for Baraje’s late mother, Aishat, they later converged at Saraki’s house, where they were joined by other politicians, including former governor of Jigawa, Sule Lamido; PDP’s chairman, Uche Secondus and others who reportedly could not attend the Fidau.

Among those who attended the meeting behind closed doors included the Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed; Baraje, who also led the new PDP bloc of the All Progressives Congress; and the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, among others.

TheNewsGuru.com gathered that the politicians discussed strategies for the speculated defection of Baraje, Ahmed, Saraki and his loyalists from the APC to the PDP.

Also present at the meeting were the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal; Senator Lawal Shuaibu; and Senator Barnabas Gemade.

A source who spoke to TheNewsGuru on anonymity ground, disclosed that the PDP had agreed to hand over the structure of the party to Saraki; sharing of party’s position on 60-40 or 40-60 ratio; and the concession of two Senate seats and the governorship slot to Saraki’s camp and R-APC in Kwara.

    Reactions from the stakeholders:

PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan said: “We only went to Ilorin to commiserate with Alhaji Kawu Baraje. He is a Nigerian and we are open to all Nigerians. We have the interest of every Nigerian at heart. We also went to Sokoto State to commiserate with the governor and the people of the state but you are not asking questions along this line.”

“It is a brotherhood meeting. Our leaders met and they shared thoughts on the future of Nigeria and how to improve on the living condition of Nigerians and how to make Nigeria a better place for all to live in.

“It was a convergence of notable Nigerians. Do not forget that the essence of today was to commensurate with Alhaji Baraje on the death of his mother.

“When politicians meet, they must discuss politics and how to improve on the standard of living of Nigerians. It will not be wrong to say that some issues were discussed.”

On Saraki’s planned return to PDP, he said: “I do not know when Saraki and Baraje will publicly declare their defection. I cannot speak on that.”

Ortom, who also visited Ahmed, told reporters that the Benue State APC issued him a red card and he hoped that the national leadership could reverse the decision. He added that the national leadership is the larger body capable of upturning the decision of the state chapter.

Wike said: “We came here to sympathise with Alhaji Abubakar Baraje over the death of his loving mother. We prayed for the family.

“Baraje is a politician and you expect politicians to rally round him at this time that he lost his mother.”

He added: “When you see your colleagues, you need to compare notes and do peer review on what you are doing in your respective states.

“However, we came purposely to engage in the eight days prayers for the late mother of Abubakar Baraje “.

Ahmed said he was yet to take a decision on his political future.

In a statement by his spokesman Dr. Muideen Akorede, the governor said he remained in the APC. “The presence today in Ilorin of Senate President Bukola Saraki, PDP Chairman Prince Uche Secondus, Governor Samuel Ortom, Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Governor Nyesom Wike, ex-Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, Senator Barnabas Gemade and other prominent political figures was for the burial rites of the late mother of respected politician, Alhaji Kawu Baraje and was not for the purpose of a political realignment.

“While I have not been briefed on any planned defection, I am aware that my principal and other political leaders in the state are gradually being shown the way out of the APC.”

But Secondus’ shuttle to Ilorin caught Kwara PDP leaders unawares. They could not receive him.

State Chairman Chief Iyiola Oyedepo said: “Actually, the National Chairman and the National Organising Secretary spoke with me when they were in Sokoto about their trip to Ilorin.

“They wanted me to meet them at the airport but I was out of town. They told me they were coming to commiserate with Baraje.”

In Abuja, Senator Shehu Sani said: “I can confirm we are talking with the PDP and we are talking with the APC and what is pushing us out of the APC is inherent injustice, marginalisation and inequity that have visited us. We have been treated badly by the party in the last three years. But we appreciate the fact that we have a chairman, in the person of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“We are also exploring options of getting out of the party or remain in the party. So, the issue is still on discussion. Our decisions will be in a matter of weeks and not in the matter of months where we are going to review whether we will remain in the party or we will go to cross the red sea out of Egypt to the promised land.

“It is very clear that we should vote for people, irrespective of their political affiliation, those who can deliver us out of Egypt and to the Promised Land. We should move away from that thinking that one political party can solve the problems of Nigeria.

“The challenge is the crisis and the problems we face as a nation today cannot be addressed without a national consensus and without a collective approach to our national problems.

“In a situation where we think the President has monopoly of wisdom and the solution to the problems, we are simply deceiving ourselves. President Muhammadu Buhari alone cannot solve the problem of Nigeria. It is important for him to be honest and understand that. It is also important for the APC to understand that.”

Attacks: Sokoto buries 32 corpses, recovers another nine – Tambuwal

The death toll in recent attacks in Sokoto state has risen to 39, Governor Aminu Tambuwal said Thursday.

Tambuwal said more bodies had been recovered after 32 were buried.

The attacks occurred in Rabah Local Government Area of the state, the latest in a string of deadly attacks across northern states.

A senator, Adamu Aliero, on Thursday blamed the attack on “bandits”.

Tambuwal, who received five governors on a condolence visit, said such mass killing was happening in Sokoto for the first time.

Currently, there are three Internally Displaced Persons camps comprising more than 10,000 people in the affected areas,” he said.

According to him, security personnel have been mobilised for constant patrol of the areas.

Zamfara state’s Governor Abdulaziz Yari, who as chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum led the condolence visit, said leaders will cooperate to check killings and destruction of properties around the country.

He described the incident as worrisome, noting that Sokoto State enjoyed relative peace in spite of the fact that it shares boundary with some areas experiencing problems in Zamfara.

Yari said, “We were in Plateau 10 days ago and now in Sokoto for the same condolence, which signified that drastic measures were needed to stop this menace.

As leaders, we must stand up to our responsibilities, being that most of us here are affected. We are losing loved ones, property and many being injured all over the affected places.

We need to look inward because the crime is a chain that must be stamped out. As leaders, we must cooperate and evolve measures to tackle the situation.”

Governor of Jigawa, Badaru Abubakar, led the gathering in prayer for the deceased and quick recovery for the injured.

Other governors in attendance were Aminu Masari (Katsina), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), Abubakar Bello (Niger) and Kashim Shettima of Borno.

Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Ahmad Abdulkadir and Sadiq Achida, National Vice Chairman Northwest and Sokoto State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as APC chieftain, Umarun Kwabo, were also on the visit.

Hundreds of suspected gunmen on Tuesday invaded Gandi and Mabanni villages in Rabah local government of Sokoto State and killed many people, destroyed properties.

  • Killings: Buhari’s security architecture not working, should be overhauled – Tambuwal

Killings: Buhari’s security architecture not working, should be overhauled – Tambuwal

…blames incessant killings on leadership failure

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has blamed the incessant killings in the country on failure of leadership.

Tambuwal, in a statement he signed and released on Tuesday, said the deaths were avoidable and preventable.

“The worst part of all this is that these deaths are avoidable and the killings preventable. It boils down, at the end of the day, to failure of leadership. Nigeria cannot progress and be part of a 21st Century forward looking world by creating new batches of mourners every other day.

“This is not the way to go. That is not what Nigerians voted for in 2015. That is not what will build a virile, united, united, politically stable and economically prosperous African Giant,” he said.

The former House of Representatives Speaker commiserated with families of those slain across the country.

The statement reads: “I wish to commiserate with the families, friends, colleagues and associates of all our beloved fellow citizens, who lost their lives in the persistent and senseless killings now occuring in all parts of our dear country. Indeed, the growing spate of mindless shedding of innocent blood, especially of policemen and other security personnel on their lawful duty posts, has brought a new dimension to the reprehensible state of insecurity in the country.

“Last May, three policemen were shot dead in Sokoto State by kidnappers, who abducted a Syrian national they were escorting. A few days later, four police officers were ambushed and killed in Benue State. Last week seven policemen were reportedly gunned down in cold blood in Abuja, and their arms and ammunition taken, by unknown persons.

“This is happening amidst repeatedly reported cases of attacks on police stations and other security facilities in various parts of the country.

“The question from every law abiding citizen today is: “Who will protect us, when even those constitutionally charged with the responsibility of protecting our lives and property have, themselves, become vulnerable targets of criminals? Where shall we run to for protection, when the institutions of State put in place to protect us are being progressively dismantled by opportunistic criminality and the trained personnel are also on the run?

“It bears repeating for me to state here that Nigeria’s security architecture and the strategies currently adopted and deployed for national security, if any, need a comprehensive overhaul. It is not working. The needless waste of life everywhere, both those of trained security personnel and ordinary citizens, is a drain on the nation’s resources and an unacceptable diminution of our valuable human capital.

“Every policeman or military personnel is someone’s father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt or friend. The number and frequency of deaths is undermining our humanity, making us less sensitive to the gravity of the situation we are in today and also creating a new generation of Nigerians, who may get accustomed to inhuman acts as the norm.”

  • Tambuwal dissolves cabinet

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal on Wednesday dissolved the State Executive Council, directing the former commissioners to hand government property to the permanent secretaries in their respective ministries, immediately.

Malam Abubakar Shekara, Director General Media and Public Affairs in Government House, announced the dissolution in a statement.

Shekara explained that the dissolution would pave way for “restructuring and re-strategising the cabinet for optimum efficiency and service delivery to the people of State”.

The director-general said Gov. Tambuwal thanked the former commissioners for their dedication, sacrifice and loyalty to the administration.

According to him, the governor also expressed appreciation to the people for cooperating with and supporting the former commissioners towards achieving the success so far recorded.

“Gov. Tambuwal wishes the former Executive Council members success in their future endeavours,” he added.

  • Buhari’ll win 2019 election without support of Saraki, Kwankwaso, others in nPDP – El-Rufai

The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, on Tuesday said members of the defunct new Peoples Democratic Party were not capable of stopping President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.

He made the disclosure during an interview session with newsmen at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The governor said since 2003, Buhari had been winning elections in Adamawa, Kano and Sokoto states where most of the nPDP members hail from.

Apparently, El-Rufai was specifically taking a swipe at the Senate President, Bukola Saraki of Kwara; former governor of Kano State and senator representing Kano central, Rabiu Kwankwaso; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar who dumped the All Progressives Congress and returned to his former party [PDP].

He however agreed that some of the grievances of the party chiefs were legitimate and should be looked into.

He said, “Who are these new PDP people that are threatening? They are Kwara, Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Rivers but I don’t think Amaechi is part of them.

“So, let’s take these four states, go back to 2003 and check. Buhari then under the ANPP won in all these four states.

“Go back to 2007, Buhari won in these four states. Even when Shekarau was running as a presidential candidate in 2011, Buhari defeated him in Kano.

“I have no doubt in my mind that even if the people threatening to leave decide to leave, it will have absolutely no impact on the presidential election.

“The President will win Sokoto, Kwara and Adamawa easily. Kano is already in the bag, I mean if you saw the crowd that welcomed the President without the former governor Kwankwaso, Kano has always been the President’s base.”

El-Rufai however admitted that some of the grievances expressed by the aggrieved nPDP members were legitimate and should be looked into.

He said the only thing that was wrong was their threat to leave the party.

He described politics as a game of addition and not subtraction, saying the party did not have to lose anyone.

However, members of the Alhaji Kawu Baraje-led faction of the defunct new PDP, who are currently in the APC, have said that their letter to the APC leadership is not an empty threat.

The spokesperson for the group, Mr. Timi Frank, stated this in interview with reporters in Abuja, on Tuesday.

Frank stated that the group was considering options following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum given to the APC.

He explained that the group had yet to receive any response either from President Buhari or the APC leadership.

Frank also dismissed insinuations that there was a crack in the nPDP bloc as a result of a counter-letter written by Senator Abdullahi Adamu on Monday.

According to him, the authentic members of the nPDP bloc were not surprised about the antics of the former Nasarawa State governor.

He explained that the senator was better known for his active involvement in the pro-Abacha movement as well as ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s failed third term bid.

Frank said over 95 per cent of the nPDP members gave Alhaji Kawu Baraje the authority to speak on their behalf and as such, the contents of his letter conveyed their feelings.

Asked whether the President or the APC had responded to his group’s letter, Frank said, “Today makes it seven days from the day our group brought this letter to the party. But as it stands, we’ve not got any response yet from them. As we’ve said, whatever we must have said in that letter, it is not an empty threat. If they decide to ignore us, so, be it.

“At the appropriate time, we are going to respond and make our position known to Nigerians based on what we’ve said. It is not just a mere threat; it is not just a mere ultimatum.

“I will tell you we are meeting with our leaders and we are going to come up with a clear position on our next step if finally they don’t attend to us.”

The nPDP spokesman further explained that history appeared to be repeating itself because this was the same way the then ruling PDP ignored calls by some of them to address certain issues.

He said, “We told them why we were aggrieved. Our leaders moved round the states to talk to party members, to ask the government at that time to listen to our views, but at the end of the day, they refused. They ignored us and that was how we left.

In response to a question on what the next step would be should the APC continue to ignore the bloc, he said, “We believe we are going to take a decision that will benefit the Nigerian people because we believe that democracy should be all inclusive. Democracy should not be a situation where when you speak the truth, you will be harassed; you will be intimidated and so on.”

He debunked Senator Adamu’s claims that the APC had been fair to the nPDP bloc.

Frank said the positions occupied by the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, were not appointments.

He argued that the two men enjoyed the confidence of their colleagues in the National Assembly across party lines and were elected based on their personal merits.

Earlier, el-Rufai had justified the use of electronic voting in last Saturday’s local government elections in his state.

He said the process gave the people the confidence to elect their chairmen and ward councillors.

He said electronic voting did not contravene the Electoral Act as being argued by some persons.

He said former President Goodluck Jonathan signed an amendment to the Act which, he claimed, legitimised the use of card readers and other electronic systems for voting.

The governor also recommended electronic voting for the 2019 elections.

“I recommend it highly to everyone. I have already offered to my colleagues’ governors that are yet to conduct local government elections that they can come to Kaduna and we can give them the machines on mutually acceptable terms.

“All you will need is to change the software, it will have the logo of the state and the number of parties active in the state and the number of parties active in the state and they can use it. It is easy.

“At the federal level, I will recommend it as well because with the card reader and the electronic voting machine, the era of rigging elections is almost over and I think that is when people will have confidence in the process and will come out en masse to vote for their leaders.

  • Easter: Tambuwal charges Nigerians to stand up for the vulnerable, downtrodden

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has urged Nigerians to use the Easter period to stand up for all those who have found themselves in vulnerable situations in the country and other parts of the world.

In a message to commemorate this year’s Easter period issued in Sokoto Sunday by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, the Governor said all members of the society should make sacrifices that will advance the cause vulnerable and the downtrodden.

Easter is a period of divine. We should spread that love around by praying, and standing up to victims of circumstance that have found themselves in vulnerable situations within us and elsewhere.

We can do this by working closely with charity organizations to give them hope, courage and the will to be strong. Doing this will make Nigeria and the world a better place to live in,” Tambuwal added.
