  • Tambuwal, Yari team up to fix Sokoto-Gusau federal highway

    Sokoto and Zamfara state governments have completed the repairs of the 214 km Sokoto-Gusau federal highway to ease transportation challenges encountered by commuters plying the important route.

    This was contained in a statement issued in Sokoto Monday by Malam Imam Imam, the spokesman to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State.

    The road, which connects Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina all through to Kaduna states, was fixed at the cost of N100 million.

    “The two states combined resources to fix the road as it is the main link between their capitals and other parts of the country. It is one of the most important roads in the North West because it connects to other routes leading to the neighbouring Niger Republic,” the statement added.

    It said while Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara shouldered the responsibility for fixing the Gusau -Tureta portion of the road, Tambuwal’s government provided funds for the fixing of the route between Tureta and Sokoto town.

    The statement added that a submission will be made to the federal government for a refund since the highway belongs to it.

    “The important thing is to achieve zero portholes on the crucial route and this has been achieved. The effort has enhanced the safety of vehicles and commuters. It has also improved movement of goods especially agricultural products because it is a major Agric zone in the federation,” the statement added.

    Maituma Sule: Tambuwal mourns Dan Masanin Kano

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has described the death of Dan Masanin Kano, Alhaji Maitama Sule, as a great loss, saying the deceased has impacted the nation positively in various spheres of human endeavour.

    In a statement issued in Sokoto Monday by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, Tambuwal described the late orator and former diplomat as a complete gentleman and good citizen who dedicated his life to the unity, progress and development of Nigeria.

    “The people and government of Sokoto State received with shock, the news of the passage of Dan Masanin Kano, Alhaji Maitama Sule.

    “Our country has lost a rare breed. A leading light from the old generation has been extinguished. He was a complete gentleman whose honesty, commitment and dedication to the unity of Nigeria will forever be cherished.

    “Dan Masani’s name will continue to be identified with everything positive about Nigeria and its people. Whenever the future generation reads about Dan Masani, they will encounter a man who was cherished and respected by the high and mighty from all parts of the country,” the statement added.

    While praying to almighty Allah to give his family the strength to bear the loss, Tambuwal extended his condolences to Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano, the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II and the entire people of Kano State over the loss.

    He equally prayed to almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest.

     

  • JUST IN: Court upholds Tambuwal’s election as Governor of Sokoto

    A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Thursday upheld the election of the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal.

    The Justice Gabriel Kolawole-led court upheld Tambuwal’s election while at the same time dismissing the application challenging the December 4, 2014, All Progressives Congress, APC, primary election which saw the emergence of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives as the party’s flag bearer.

    The judge held that the application lacked merit and is “therefore dismissed.”

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that an APC member, Umar Dahiru, had filed an application before the court seeking that it to set aside the said primary election over allegations of non-compliance with the party’s rules in the selection of flag bearer.

  • Tambuwal commends Sokoto Assembly for passing Right to Education law

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has commended the Sokoto State House of Assembly for passing the Right to Education law which seeks to provide free and compulsory basic education to all children in the state.

    In a statement issued in Sokoto by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, the Governor said the lawmakers deserve special praise considering the diligent manner they committed themselves to the passage of the important legislation.

    “This is a key intervention in our effort to expand access to education in our dear state. The decision to pass this law has given us the necessary legal framework to push forward our policy of the state of emergency we declared in the sector over a year ago.

    “We commend especially members of the Assembly’s committee on education who showed enough zeal and determination to convince their colleagues to pass the bill at a record time.

    “As the first state in Nigeria to make education justiciable right, we hope to implement the provisions of the law to the latter. For us, the work on realising our objectives for the education sector has only just begun. We seek the support and cooperation of members of the public and all stakeholders, local and international, to enable us provide quality and accessible education to our children,” the statement quoted the Governor as saying.

    He said the working relationship existing between the three arms of government in the state is worthy of emulation from all and sundry, adding that the same zeal would be extended to ensure smooth passage of other executive bills currently before the lawmakers.

    It would be recalled that the Assembly last Wednesday passed the bill which compels governments and parents to ensure all children between the ages of six and 18 are educated on public expense.

    It also prescribes punishment for parents and guardians who refused to let their children attend school.

    Another major feature of the bill is the institutionalization of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), which ensures public schools are properly supervised by parents and members of the public.

    The Governor is expected to assent to the bill in the coming days.

  • Tambuwal, Dangote flag off rice outgrowers scheme in Sokoto

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal along with the President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, on Wednesday flagged off a rice outgrowers’ scheme which will cover 25,000 hectres of farmland across some selected local government areas of Sokoto state.

    Speaking at the site of the event which held in Goronyo Dam, Dangote said the project will within the next three years produce at least one million tonne of high quality parboiled rice for Nigerian market.

    He said to achieve this, his company plans to cultivate 160,000 hectres of irrigable rice farmland in selected states, including Sokoto, which will be cultivated to grow paddy during two cropping-season per year.

    “With this, we hope to achieve a minimum yield of five to six tonnes per hectre. Our plans is to off-take not less that 80 percent of the paddy produced by the outgrowers. We will also develop our own farm operations to include seed multiplication capabilities,” he added.

    According to him, Dangote Rice Limited aims to boost the local economy, create jobs along the value and make a significant contribution to the transformation of subsistence farms into market-oriented agribusinesses.

    In his remarks, Tambuwal commended Dangote for siting the project in Sokoto State, saying the renewed efforts of his administration in the sector has started yielding the desired result.

    The Governor said education and agriculture have remained the two top sectors in the priority list in the state in the last two years, revealing that this year, Sokoto has allocated more to agriculture than all states of the federation.

    “We have had series of visits to different countries and signed various MoUs with many organisations and entities, Dangote inclusive, with a view to uplifting agriculture in the state.

    “So the Dangote Rice Project in Sokoto State will not only provide food security and employment to our teeming unemployed youths, it would ensure the overall development of agricultural activities in the state,” he added.

    Tambuwal assured that all necessary incentives have been put in place to ensure smooth operation of the scheme.

    In his remarks, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, urged the people to embrace this opportunity to improve their farming technique and standards of living.

    He said the people of Sokoto are grateful for the opportunity and will mobilise needed resources to ensure its success.

  • Tambuwal approves N2.93 bn for payment of pension arrears, gratuities – HOS

    Governor Aminu Tambuwal has approved over N 2.93 billion for the payment of backlog of pensions, death and contract gratuities to no fewer than 1,292 retirees and others.

    The Head of the Civil Service (HOS), Dr Buhari Kware told newsmen on Thursday in Sokoto that the payment would be done in phases.

    “The first category will involve the payment of N 1.23 billion to 567 living retirees and the next of kin of deceased ones.’’

    Kware explained that the first category comprised beneficiaries, who retired between Sept. 2015 and April 2016.

    “The figure was initially 588, but only 567 were physically verified by the State Auditor-General as directed by the governor.

    “The remaining twenty one retirees who were not physically verified under the first phase would be paid after being duly verified.

    “A committee had been set up to commence the payment of the entitlements to all the 567 already verified beneficiaries.’’

    Kware stated that the second category comprised 725 beneficiaries and their money stood at N 1.7 billion.

    According to the HOS, the second category comprised beneficiaries who retired between May 2016 and Dec.2016.

    “The Auditor-General would also physically verify them after which they will be paid their entitlements.

    “The benefits of all the deceased retirees would be computed and sent to the State Ministry of Justice for onward payment to their next of kins through the courts.

    “The processes being followed are not to make the payment cumbersome, but to ensure probity, diligence, honesty, and accountability.

    “This is also to ensure that only those who are supposed to genuinely be paid are paid, hence to avoid any possible pitfalls.”

    Kware commended Tambuwal for according priority to the payment of benefits to all retirees.

    He also appealed to the beneficiaries to continue to be patient, while cautioning them to be wary of fraudsters.

  • We will revoke C of O of filling stations hoarding fuel in Sokoto – Tambuwal

    Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said the government will revoke the Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) of any filling station that is found to be hoarding fuel in order to create artificial scarcity or is selling above official rate.

    He said the government, along with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), will set up a joint task force to move round filling stations to ascertain their compliance with laid down rules and regulations guiding their operations.

    The Governor’s threat followed the excruciating fuel scarcity bedeviling Sokoto town and environs which has been lingering for over two weeks.

    Speaking when he inspected sale of fuel at some filling stations in Sokoto Sunday, Tambuwal said government will not fold its arms and watch unscrupulous marketers hold the people to ransom.

    He said the supply of the commodity from the Nigeria national Petroleum Cooperation (NNPC) has not altered, as such, no one should create artificial scarcity to burden the people.

    The Governor, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Salihu Maidaji, urged all those hoarding the commodity to quickly open their stations.

    “The committee will go round, and any filling station found hoarding fuel will face the full wrath of the law,” Tambuwal added.

    The Governor commended the management of one of the filling stations visited, SAK Petroleum, for discharging the commodity promptly and at official price.

  • Tambuwal, Sultan inaugurate 12-bed clinic built by ex-students

    Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III on Sunday inaugurated a 12-bed clinic built by former students of the Sultan Abubakar College, Sokoto.

    The health facility was built for the college at the cost of more than N19 million.

    The inauguration ceremony was organised to mark the 50th Anniversary of the institution.

    Speaking at the event, Sultan Abubakar III commended the old boys association for the gesture.

    “I will also continue to personally pay for the services of a Nurse at the clinic until the end of my life.

    “I am also urging the State Government and Sokoto South Local Government to post a medical Doctor and additional Nurses to the clinic.

    “In the same vein, I will personally assist in the rehabilitation of some structures in the college like the staff common rooms and assembly hall,” he said.

    According to him, providing youths with qualitative education is vital to curbing drug abuse, restiveness and other crimes.

    However, the Sultan commended the state government for according education a top priority, especially the declaration of the state of emergency on the sector.

    Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said that the state government had commenced the total rehabilitation of the college.

    Tambuwal also promised to continue to promulgate and religiously implement policies and programmes to restore the lost glory of the education sector.

    “’Education is the only veritable tool of national development and we will never waver in taking the sector to greater heights.”

    The governor also commended the Sultan of Sokoto for his relentless efforts to develop the sector, especially bolstering girl-child education.

    Alhaji Aliyu Lawal, the National Chairman of the association, and its Sokoto State chapter chairman, Alhaji Almustapha Sahabi, pledged to continue to assist in developing their alma mater.

    The Principal of the college, Alhaji Almustapha Abubakar, said that the clinic would greatly help to provide quality healthcare services to its community and neighbours.

    The highlight of the event was the conferment of merit awards on some distinguished personalities including Tambuwal and Sultan Abubakar III.

  • Tambuwal advocates support for families of fallen heroes

    Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has said one of the best ways to honour Nigeria’s fallen heroes is to take care of the loved ones they left behind by providing opportunities for their children, and empowering their widows.

    Speaking at an event to commemorate the 2017 Armed Forces Remembrance Day held in Sokoto Sunday, Tambuwal commended the military for their sacrifice in helping to secure the nation.

    He said as people who have given their lives to protect others, members of the armed forces deserve the nation’s gratitude at all times.

    “Today’s event is significant because it shows that we are a people of history who also appreciate our history. It also shows that there are people who paid the supreme sacrifice for us to get to where we are today as one, united and happy nation.

    “We should continue to learn from their sacrifices to ensure that Nigeria remains a united country where everyone is enjoying the freedom as enshrined in our constitution. We should at all times make our contributions to national development.

    “On this important day, we should always continue to support their families and encourage the ones still in active service to give their maximum best in the service of the fatherland,” Tambuwal added.

    This year’s event, which held at the Maigero Theatre Complex in Sokoto, featured medical outreach organized by the armed forces, parade and laying of wreath in honour of the fallen service men.

     

  • Tambuwal flags off ‘Change Begins With Me’ campaign in Sokoto

    Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal on Wednesday flagged off the Federal Government’s ‘Change Begins With Me’ campaign in Sokoto, with a call on the people to shun vices that are inimical to societal cohesion and progress.

    Speaking when after handing over jingles of the campaign to the State Commissioner of Information, Jeli Abdulkadir, for transmission in the state media outlets, Tambuwal said all Nigerians should imbibe the virtues of social reorientation and avoid bad attitudes imbibed especially in recent years.

    “We should be positive in our thinking and have better attitude towards issues. Importantly, we should all support the government of President Muhammadu Buhari for it to deliver on its promises to the people of Nigeria.

    “Already the government is doing exceeding well in the fight against insecurity and the fight corruption. Similar efforts are being done to turn around the economy. You will agree with me these are the three main things which the President promised us and he is on track in the areas,” Tambuwal said.

    The Governor added that the state will use its media organs to educate the citizens, while at the same time taking the lead in change of attitude.

    According to him, the messages will be translated into Hausa and Fulfulde languages, and disseminated into all the nooks and crannies of the state for the benefit of the people.
