2023: 2 Tambuwal’s aides, scores defect to APC in Sokoto

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State had received two Special Assistants of Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State and scores of other members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Bashar Abubakar, the Special Adviser to Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto North), the party’s leader in the state, said this in a statement he issued on Tuesday in Sokoto.

According to Abubakar, the Special Assistants were: Alhaji Abdullahi Jabo and Hajiya Hafsatu Tudun-Wada, from Tambuwal and Sokoto South Local Government Areas, respectively.

He said Jabo and his supporters were received by Alhaji Ahmad Aliyu and Alhaji Idris Gobir, the state APC governorship candidate and his running mate, respectively.

“Hajiya Hafsatu Tudun-Wada and scores of her supporters were received by the wife of the gubernatorial candidate, Hajiya Fatima Aliyu at a separate occasion,” Abubakar said.

The special assistant added that other PDP members and stakeholders recently received by the APC were from Sokoto North and Wamakko LGAs.

He said all the new members were warmly received and assured of equal treatment with other members of the party, while declaring their total support towards the success of APC at all levels.

  • 2023: Tambuwal set to broker peace meeting between Atiku, Ortom in Benue

2023: Tambuwal set to broker peace meeting between Atiku, Ortom in Benue

The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is already making another plan to jet out to Benue state for a meeting with one of the G5 governors, Samuel Ortom all in a bid to settle their differences.

Recall that G5 governors are against the candidacy of Atiku, citing intra -party zoning  arrangement.

The decision to fix the meeting for Benue was arrived at when Chairman of the G-5 governors, and his Sokoto State counterpart, Aminu Tambuwal met recently.

Tambuwal raised the idea of a meeting between Ortom and Atiku as a means to settle their differences that has ranged for too long.

However, Ortom advised Tambuwal, who is both the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, to reach out to the other governors in the Integrity Group.

Findings showed that even though Ortom appreciated the visit to him, he informed his guest that he alone cannot take a decision for the G-5. Despite being the chairman of the group, Wike is the leader of the Integrity Group with other members being Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Uguanyi (Enugu).

“Tambuwal came to seek reconciliation with Governor Ortom but Ortom told him that he cannot take any decision on his own, that he should meet with Wike and the other members of the G-5,” a source privy to the discussion confided in the Nigerian Tribune.

The source, who craved for anonymity because of lack of authority to discuss the matter, also confirmed that arrangements would be made to receive the PDP flag bearer and Tambuwal in Makurdi before Christmas in continuation of the effort to achieve peace in the main opposition party.

2023: Obasanjo hosts Okowa, Tambuwal, Lamido, others in Abeokuta

…we had a robust discussion on matters of national interest-Tambuwal

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo late Saturday had a two-hour closed door session with key members of the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council in Abeokuta.

The team led by the Vice Presidential candidate and governor of Delta State, Okowa, the Director General of the Presidential Council and governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido

Others include, former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Cross River State governor, Liyel Imoke and Otunba Oyewole Fasawe.

Speaking after about two hour closed door session, Tambuwal said the team was in Abeokuta “to pay our usual respect and to continue to consult our leader, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on matters of national interest and we have had a very fruitful conversation with him.”

He added that, “We’re in the build up and we will continue to do what we have to do to win the election.

“My message to Nigerians is that we should come out en masse when it is time in February to vote for a balanced ticket that reflects the characteristics of this country, that will provide leadership that will stabilise this country and revive our economy and foster more of national unity and that is Atiku Abubakar and Governor Okowa.

Tambuwal hinted that the party was expecting a very very rousing and large crowd at the Lagos State Presidential campaign in Lagos on Monday.

  • 2023: PDP will go under if Atiku plays the ostrich before NEC

2023: PDP will go under if Atiku plays the ostrich before NEC

    …as Ayu’s ouster gathers momentum

72 hours to the meetings of the Board of Trustees (BoT), and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, the signals clearly indicate that if Abubakar Atiku decides to play the ostrich, the main opposition party will go under before 2023 general elections.

The grand plot against the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu is fast gathering momentum as the time ticks for the embattled chairman.

It was gathered that the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike; Oyo State Governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde; Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi and the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Iyiola Omisore, also met in London at the weekend to explore the areas of collaboration ahead of the 2023 elections.

A source privy to the inside arrangements revealed that: “This is Atiku’s time to show leadership and he should not fail the party. He should weigh in on the matter before NEC and the outcome should be announced there.

“This is the hour of reckoning for Atiku and Ayu. But, if he should play the ostrich, we will help him to lose the election,” the prominent party chieftain said.

It was also learnt that Wike is not relenting in his bid to ensure that the NEC and national caucus of the party force Ayu to resign the same way Prince Uche Secondus was forced to vacate the seat as the national chairman.

It was learnt that a series of meetings have been lined up this week in the fight for the soul of the PDP.

“If the PDP survives these series of meetings unhurt, then it could be said that it can win the presidential election.

“This is because there are strong forces against Ayu and we live to see how he can survive it. It is either the PDP breaks or Ayu goes,” a chieftain of the party said.

“How can the chairman of a party after a convention declare a traitor the hero of a convention and he’s still allowed to parade himself as chairman, despite the lopsidedness in the party.

The source said that as of Thursday about 10 members of the National Working Committee (NWC) have signed that Ayu must go.

It was gathered that even other presidential aspirants that took part in the presidential primary are not happy with the Ayu-led NEC as nobody has reached out to them.

According to them, Atiku met only Tambuwal because he stepped down for him.

Feelers so far point to the direction of one confirmed action which is Ayu must go but Atiku should not make the mistake of sitting on the fence this time around.

  • Atiku, Tambuwal ask court to dismiss Wike’s suit challenging outcome of PDP primaries

Atiku, Tambuwal ask court to dismiss Wike’s suit challenging outcome of PDP primaries

The PDP, Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State have challenged a suit filed by Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers over the recently-concluded presidential primaries.

The trio, in a notice of preliminary objection marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/782/22 dated and filed on Aug. 5 before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of a Federal High Court, Abuja, sought an order striking out or dismissing the suit for want of jurisdiction.

Prince Michael Ekamon and Governor Wike are 1st and 2nd plaintiffs respectively in a suit dated June 2 and filed on June 3.

While the PDP is the 1st defendant, the Independents National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tambuwal and Atiku are 2nd to 4th defendants respectively.

Wike, in the suit, sought among other prayers, the court’s pronouncement declaring him the PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

But the PDP and others, in their application filed by their counsel A.K. Ajibade, SAN, argued their matter on four grounds.

According to them, the instant suit as filed is unknown to law and/or not cognizable under a pre-election matter.

They argued that Ekamon, who is the 1st applicant, having not participated in the primary election conducted by the National Executive Committee of the party lacked the requisite locus standi to institute the suit.

They further argued that the instant suit, as brought by the applicants (Ekamon and Wike) did not fall within “the purview of Section 84 of the Electoral Act, as such does not qualify as a preelection dispute.

“That the instant suit was not initiated by due process of the law.”

Upon resumed hearing in the matter on Wednesday, Wilfred Okoi, counsel for  Wike and Ekamon, told the court that the matter was filed through an originating summons dated June 2 and filed June 3.

He said all the defendants, including INEC, had been served.

Okoi said he was in receipt of a counter to their originating summons and a motion on notice for an extension of time from PDP, Tambuwal and Atiku to enable them filed their counter affidavit and enter defence in the suit.

Following the lawyer’s non-opposition to the motion for an extension of time, Prisicila Eje, counsel for PDP and others moved the motion and the judge granted it.

Justice Mohammed consequently adjourned the matter until Sept. 14 for hearing.

Wike came second behind Atiku in the party’s presidential primary election held in May.

Tambuwal, who was also a presidential aspirant, stepped down for Atiku at the last minute.

Although Wike had recently denied filing any suit against the party and its presidential candidate, the party and others were represented in court, except INEC’s counsel, who was not in court.

  • PDP: Sokoto state Governor Tambuwal wins senatorial ticket

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has won the Sokoto South senatorial district PDP primary election in the state.

Tambuwal aspires  to represent about seven Local Government Areas in the Red Chamber come 2023.

The LGAs are Bodinga, Dange/Shuni, Kebbe, Shagari, Tambuwal, Tureta, and Yabo.

Recall that the governor, last week, stepped down for former vice president Atiku Abubakar at the presidential primary of the party held at the Eagle Square Abuja.

Governor Tambuwal had previously represented Tambuwal/Kebbe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he rose to become the Speaker of the House in his third term.
Tambuwal will contest the position  at the general election in 2023 against  the incumbent Senator Danbaba Dambuwa, who defected from PDP to APC.

  • Primaries: Pack your load and go, Clark urges Ayu, PDP chairman

Primaries: Pack your load and go, Clark urges Ayu, PDP chairman

Leader, South-South/PANDEF, Chief Edwin Clark has called on Senator Iyorchia Ayu to resign as the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports the elder statesman via a statement he issued on Tuesday, saying the reported outrageous financial inducements of delegates and the cynical dollarization of the electoral process give strong warnings of more likely deleterious outcomes of the 2023 general elections, mainly the presidential, and their aftermaths.

He said most disturbing is what happened at the special national convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Abuja, on Saturday, 28th May 2022.

“I followed the live broadcasts of the proceedings keenly until about 12.30 am on Sunday, the 29th. I was quite impressed by the efforts of the convention committee, which was headed by former Senate President, Senator David Mark, and his assistants, particularly, the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri.

“But, sadly, the outcome of the election leaves much to be desired; it was very unjust and rather unwholesome. It will definitely impact severe, adverse ramifications on the future unity of the country.

“I was alarmed by the outrageous and Machiavelli manner in which Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, Governor of Sokoto State, was so apparently “arranged” to announce his withdrawal from the contest, at the last minute; his speech changed the mood of the event.

That was done in order to foist another Northerner as the Party’s flag bearer; having regard to the fact that Governor Aminu Tambuwal was the only aspirant from the whole of the North West, which had about 192 delegates at the Convention.

“What Tambuwal did was not only dishonourable but also a serious electoral abnormality and a tragic betrayal of national patriotism for hidebound interests.

“Another Northern aspirant, Mr Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a businessman from Borno State, had, earlier, also suddenly, withdrawn from the contest, citing its obscene monetization as his reason; but we now know better.

“It is now widespread understanding that there were pressures mounted on Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, and former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, to also withdraw, while Tambuwal deliberately delayed his action till the last minute. By so doing, unduly swept his North West votes to Atiku Abubakar.

“One can now appreciate the reasons given by Mr Peter Obi for his withdrawal from the PDP, both as a member, and as an aspirant, few days before the party’s primary. And I would think that what he did was, without doubt, in respect, or obedience, to the position of the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum.

“Unfortunately, some aspirants from the South believed that, with the resources and facilities at their disposal, their elders no longer matter, and disregarded, with impunity, the patriotic advice on the need to be steadfast on the position of the zoning of the presidency to the South.

“They never minded that what we have been advocating was in their interest. They proved themselves to be selfish and arrogant, and thought they could win on their own steam. They failed; I can only hope that they have, now, learned their lessons.

“Even much worse, in the extreme, was the action of the National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu, in his open visit to Governor Tambuwal to congratulate and hail him, in his words, as “the hero of the Convention”.

“This clearly reveals his partiality and predilection in the processes leading to the baffling conclusion of the PDP Presidential Primary. His undignified and parochial conduct, to please his northern principals, is not only a big disgrace to the office he occupies but, also, a sad display of lewd subservience to the political subjugation of one ethnic group, in a diverse country like Nigeria.

“We had earlier suspected that he was in favour of a northern candidate, when on the day of his inauguration as National Chairman, last year, he, needlessly, said during his speech, that he would resign if a Northerner emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the party.

“Senator Ayu has failed to realize that what we are fighting for affects all minorities in Nigeria. The Southern Nigeria relationship with the Middle Belt is well established, dating back to the First Republic, during the period of Dr. J. S. Tarka, from today’s Benue State, a Founding Member of the then, United Middle Belt Congress, and the strong alliance with Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group.

“The relationship subsisted during the Second Republic, when the Minorities of the South and the Minorities of the North combined to fight for a common course; the inclusion, and full participation of all Minorities in the politics and governance of the Country, of which I was the Leader.

“Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s appalling, thoughtless and unpatriotic public conduct bears grave negative consequences. He should, therefore, no longer consider himself fit and proper to retain his position as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and should resign now,” the elder statesman added.

  • PDP: Battle of the titans as Atiku takes on Tambuwal, Wike, Saraki, others

PDP: Battle of the titans as Atiku takes on Tambuwal, Wike, Saraki, others

In a matter of hours the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP will brace the tape as the first political party to pick its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) in this analysis will take a peep at the four major contestants in a battle that would showcase a veteran presidential aspirant, Abubakar Atiku, a former number two citizen of Nigeria, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto state and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Bukola Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State and President of the Senate in the 8th Senate, Nyesom Wike, a former Minister of Education, former ALGON chairman and serving Governor of Rivers State.

Others include, former Senate President and SGF, Anyim Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuanbuwa, former Group Managing Director of Neimeth Nigeria Plc, Isa Hayautudeen a former banker and a host of others.

The battle to clinch the PDP ticket may not be an easy one because the major contestants are all political gladiators with intimidating credentials and can never be pushovers.

Abubakar Atiku: The former vice president had it all wrapped up in 2007 but his political career developed a k-leg because of his frosty relationship with his boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo the Ota oracle who ensured his deputy’s political career was permanently nailed in a coffin.

This will be his fourth attempt trying to rule Nigeria making him a veteran presidential aspirant in the mould of serving President Muhammadu Buhari who tried and eventually got it on a platter but turned out to be a collosal failure after seven years in office.

His chance at the presidential primary is still clouded as his chances of clinching it is heavily dependent on the invisible forces that garnered support for him from the blues in 2019 in Port Harcourt.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a lawyer, this maverick politician is known to brace the odds and manage to clinch positions like he did in 2011. But the ghost of 2011 is busy hunting him as his chances are a dark big cloud that may take him no where.

Bukola Saraki, a medical doctor turned politician is capable of turning the tables if the slightest opportunity emerges but presidential primaries are not a child’s play.

If he gets his act right with the support of his geo-political zone, the north central and contacts he built in the far north as Senate President, this medical doctor may have a good showing at the primaries.

Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, a lawyer, a grassroots politician who has never lost any political battle all his political career has repeatedly begged his party’s leadership to give him its presidential ticket for his loyalty to PDP since 1998.

He says it without mincing words that he has the magical wand to wrestle power from the ruling party if tested.

He started his consultations since March and had toured all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria trying to gather support.

Among the major contestants, he is the only aspirant that has vowed to support any aspirant that emerges while others that had prostituted with the party remained taciturn.

He’s a major force to contend with in the Primaries today.

Anyim Pius Anyim, the hope of the south east has one of the tallest credentials in government corridors as a one time Senate President, SGF at the federal level.

A gentleman with the touch of civility but his chances are equally clouded in doubts.

Other aspirants will mark register on Saturday but the turning point is that it’s too close to clearly point at who may emerge PDP presidential flag bearer provided there’s no horse trading and betrayals.

  • 2023: Why Tambuwal may spring surprise, clinch PDP’s presidential ticket

As Nigeria’s main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) makes final preparation for its highly anticipated presidential primaries scheduled for this weekend in Abuja, the aspirants are also in final race to politick their way to pick the party’s coveted ticket.

For over three months now, aspirants have transversed the length and breadth of the country meeting party delegates to sell their ambition of being the party’s flag bearer ahead of the 2023 presidential elections.

One of the aspirants and a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi on Wednesday resigned his membership of the party and also pulled out of the race for the party’s ticket reducing the contenders to 14.

The 14 presidential aspirants as of Thursday include; former Vice President, Abubakar Atiku, two former Senate Presidents, Bukola Saraki and Anyim Pius Anyim as well as Governors Aminu Tambuwa, Nyesom Wike, Bala Mohammed, Emmanuel Udom, of Sokoto, Rivers, Bauchi and Akwa Ibom states respectively.

Others are businessman, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former Governors Peter Obi and Ayo Fayose of Anambra and Ekiti States, Chief Sam Ohunabunwa, Dele Momodu, Charles Okwudili, Chikwendu Kalu, Cosmos Ndukwe and Olivia Tarela, who is the only female among the PDP presidential aspirants.

However, while the race appears tight and competitive, the odds seem to be in favour of the incumbent governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.

*Tambuwal controls largest share of delegates by region*

In search of the best candidate to take PDP to victory come 2023, several speculations have been made in favour of Atiku with citation of his political record in 2018, during which he polled 1,532 votes at the PDP’s primaries to secure the party’s ticket and marched to keenly contest with President Muhammadu Buhari – he (Atiku) garnered 11,262,978 (41%) while Buhari Buhari of claimed 15,191,847 (56%).

For those on this lane, there are two points that have been gravely ignored, one of which is that the dynamics of politics in Nigeria today are unfavourable for Atiku and the second factor is that Tambuwal’s feat at the same 2018, where he trailed Atiku after securing 693 votes is highly underrated – not everyone is aware that the Sokoto State Governor continued to nurture his strength and political structure while Atiku on his side abandoned his political house after losing out in the last presidential election.

With President Muhammadu Buhari withholding assent on the Amended Electoral Act 2022, Tambuwal’s call to a new political glory was made more pronounced. This is because the Northwest Zone where he hails from would be presenting the highest number of delegates to the convention given the region’s superior number of local governments. The zone comprises of Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States – and most of these states are in his pocket (Tambuwal).

Only 811 voting delegates are expected at the PDP convention, they include 774 national delegates (1 Per LGA and 37 special delegates (People with disability from each of the 36 states and FCT).

There is an aggregate of 186 national delegates in the Northwest and Tambuwal is the only candidate presented by the region. Firstly, there is no gainsaying that he (Tambuwal) will clear all the delegates’ votes in Sokoto. In Kano, Tambuwal has also become a favourite leader following the exit of a former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso in PDP. Jigawa, is controlled by Tambuwal’s ally, former governor, Sule Lamido who has seized the territory for his friend.

Tambuwal is also a force to reckon with in Katsina, although Wike’s man, Senator Garba Lado is also doing his best to get some votes. Tambuwal’s train is also strongly stationed in Kaduna and Kebbi but Atiku and Saraki will give him a fight here. In Zamafara, General Aliyu Gusau is supporting Saraki, however, Tambuwal and can’t be written off in the state.

A PDP chieftain in the region muted that power brokers are open to supporting a northern consensus candidate and Tambuwal, it was said stands a higher chance than Atiku as he is seen as very accessible and also enjoys the home advantage factor in this zone.

More impressively, Tambuwal isn’t that far from taking a win as other contenders will only jostle for leftover votes in other regions and he (Tambuwal) is still part of the party. Wike will be struggling at his own home front in South-South, and might not be able to pick more than Rivers and Cross Rivers. In North-East, Atiku has Tambuwal, Saraki and Wike to fiercely contend with. In North-Central, Saraki though will win his state may have to still battle for survival as Tambuwal, Wike, Atiku also take their own share. In the South-East, Wike will have an edge since he is working with some governors but besides the fact that votes here is not as sizeable as in other regions, Tambuwal still stands strong with the support he is getting from the former governor of Imo State Emeka Ihedioha.

Power brokers, stakeholders in the North are backing Tambuwal

With the defeat of the southern presidency agenda which paved way for an open contest for the PDP’s ticket, most power brokers in the northern part of Nigeria are settling for a candidate who is reasonable and not so difficult to relate with – Tambwual mien puts him miles above a high-and-mighty Atiku in this stance.

Only recently, when the gruesome murder of a defenceless student, Deborah of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto by her irate schoolmates had troubled Sokoto State and many had feared the tension escalate and spread to other states, however, it was Tambuwal’s responsiveness, liberality and willingness to work with others that saved the day and by a large extension doused the wake of a likely religious tension in the country.

From his days as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2011 to 2015, he has continued to build bridges. Close and confidential sources around the Sokoto Governor describe him as one of the most down-to-earth politicians, meeting people on their own terms and engaging with them in a manner like never before. He takes his politics personal and is keen on maintaining quality conversations with people around him, never taking decisions on his own, which is why he had a balanced House of Representatives as Speaker, giving key positions to members of the House in an equitable manner. He also carried everyone along and made sure that consultation was the theme of the day before taking any critical decision.

Still, it’s worth emphasizing that it might be just a few days away from the d-day but in politics, there’s an incredibly wide range of results that are within the margin of error.

Blasphemy: Tambuwal lifts curfew on Sokoto, bans all forms of procession

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has lifted the curfew imposed due to the recent killing of a student of the State College of Education, over alleged blasphemy.

The lifting of the 24-hour curfew, imposed on the towy, is with immediate effect.

This was announced in a statement on Friday in Sokoto by the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Isa Bajini-Galadanchi.

Tambuwal said the curfew was lifted after due consultations with security agencies confirming the return of peace to the state.

The governor, however, urged the general public to be law abiding and remain peaceful for sustainable security and economic development of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tambuwal on May 14, imposed the curfew, to contain the rising protests across township streets over alleged religious blasphemy.

Bajini-Galadanchi, said the governor lifted the curfew with immediate effect and banned all forms of processions in the state until further notice.

“The resolution is in accordance with the enabling powers under section 176 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, section 1, 2 and 4 of the Public Order Act and section 15 of Sokoto State Peace Preservation Law.

“The governor of Sokoto State, has after due consultations, lifted the curfew imposed on Sokoto metropolis with immediate effect.

The Commissioner reiterated the need for peace as the necessary foundation for any meaningful development.

He said Tambuwal thanked the people in the state for their understanding in complying with the curfew.
