2023 Presidency: FCT deserves a Mayor – Tambuwal

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State says the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, deserves a mayor and better recognition.

Tambuwal, who is one of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants, stated this while meeting with the PDP FCT delegates in Abuja.

He said that, if elected president, he would give better recognition to the FCT indigenes and their plights.

“I believe that there is a lot of work to be done in the FCT. I believe more that the people we met at the FCT deserve more recognition.

“I am not insisting that FCT should be a state but you appoint ministers, sometimes two from a state. What stop you from appointing a zonal Minister from the FCT bacause FCT is part of North Central zone?

“So if you are appointing an FCT person as Minister to represent the zone, what is wrong with that?

“Because of the Special nature of FCT, there should be a Mayor in the FCT. In major cities in the world London, California, they have mayors.

“I understand what the issues are, so what is important is for you to work with us on this campaign train. This is a project to beat in the PDP,” Tambuwal said.

The presidential aspirant also pledged that if given the mandate, youths and women would receive special attention as they were receiving in Sokoto state today.

Rep. Hassan Sokodabo (PDP-Abuja South) advised that if consensus candidate could not be achieved, the party leaders should ensure that PDP candidate emerged through credible primary.

Sokodabo said once a level playing ground was provided, it was the wished of the delegates that all aspirants would support whoever emerged.

“Whosoever emerge, we hope that others will be able to join him and build this country.”

On his part, the FCT PDP Chairman, Mr Sunday Zakka, commended the role played by Tambuwal towards PDP’s success in the FCT area councils’ election.

Zakka urged Tambuwal to continue his support for PDP FCT chapter, adding that the party will continue to appreciate him.

What I will do to address Nigeria’s problem if elected president – Tambuwal

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Aspirant and Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has promised to assemble the best team of economists to address the nation’s economic problems if elected president.

Tambuwal at separate consultative meetings with the PDP Caucuses in the Senate and House of Representatives and PDP Board of Trustees in Abuja, also said he would make Nigeria a productive country.

“It is a collective work. I am not an economist. I cannot pretend, but I can assure you that I will assemble some of the best, the best of the best economists in this country that will be part of the economic team to address economic situation in Nigeria.

“Importantly, we must address the issue of production. If we cannot produce then you are out.

“So we must address issue of production, not only to produce for ourselves but to conserve foreign exchange and provide and create more jobs for people.

“So, on the issue of economy we have to have them segmented from the micro to macro economy. So I believe that is something that we can actually all do together,” he said.

On Security, Tambuwal said that if elected he would address the root causes of insecurity including hunger, poverty and the lack of education.

Tambuwal said that he would also adopt community approach, community police, recruit more troops and technology to address the menaces that plague the country over time.

“It is very important that we go back to community and ensure that we have leaders of communities and local governments or states on board on resolving issues of politics.

“By the grace of God I will adopt a community approach to solving our security problems and deploy technology. As I said, it is not rocket science.

“When you have technology, you can detect these things early enough, and you can take your action on time,” Tambuwal said.

The Sokoto State governor, who decried the state of disunity in the country, said that PDP needed a dynamic person who had what it takes to unite the country to emerge as the standard flag bearer of PDP.

“I believe that in this country, we have the right people. What we require is that leadership that can identify those people and charge them with the responsibility of doing and discharging those responsibilities that they are competent enough to handle and it’s not rocket science.”

Tambuwal said that under his watch no segment of the country would be neglected in terms of appointive positions by the government.

He said that he had demonstrated that when he was the speaker of the House of Representatives where virtually all parts of this country were adequately looked after in terms of assignments and in terms of paying attention to the issues that concerned our people.

“ I believe in this country, that we have all it takes to do it. All we require is to identify the right leadership, irrespective of whether the leadership is going to come from.

“When you are looking for a physician to treat you, you don’t necessarily go for your tribesman or your townsman. You look for the best if you can really find the best because you need that care and attention. The situation where we are in Nigeria today is like a state of emergency.

“When you are in a state of emergency you require that everything must be marshalled to rescue the situation and that is the situation of Nigeria in every material particular.

“ I am coming to you as my brothers and sisters, with my records, with my content, with my capacity.

“I know that I understand this country. I have a clear understanding of issues and not only that, I can identify individuals that I can work with as a team that will unite this country.

“After uniting the country, we will work towards if it is structure, we can sit down and address the issues,” Tambuwal said.

He also stressed the need for devolution of power, saying devolution is key.

“Nigeria must devolve to survive. The centre is overloaded and we really need to go back to the local government and state where the people are and give them more responsibilities, more resources, and that is how we are going to do it.

“I believe that these are things that are achievable if you have a president that understand the issues, not only a president with an experience in governance, but a president with experience in democratic governance,” Tambuwal said.

The Sokoto State governor said that he had experience and a clear understanding of dynamic issues in the country, including the constitution amendment.

“I have a clear understanding of not only these issues, I have the right temperament.

“Where we are going in Nigeria, we need a leader that can be accommodating. We need a leader that can listen, we need a leader that can unite this country.

2023: Gov. Tambuwal joins presidential race

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, on Monday expressed his desire to join the 2023 presidential race under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tambuwal, who made his intention known during the state PDP stakeholders’ meeting, said the decision is in respect of some of his political history.

“When the members of House of Representatives approached me to contest for the Speaker of the 7th Assembly, I gave them conditions.

“That is; as a loyal son of Sokoto State, they should consult with my leaders in the state, before I could accept their call, which they did and by the grace of God, we eventually emerged victorious.

“Now, we are here and I have listened to party leaders, women, youth and members of the PDP in Sokoto State on the call that I should initiate and begin the process of consultation.

“This is with a view to running and contesting first as flag bearer of the PDP and if God almighty blesses our effort, subsequently the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In the name of God Almighty, the most beneficent, the most merciful, I hereby accept to begin the process of consultation to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, a former deputy governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, called on the people of the state to always remain grateful to God for producing “good Nigerian leaders”.

“As such, after 42 years of Shagari leadership in the country, we sat down to rethink of who will sustain the credibility and leadership style exhibited by our founding fathers.

“We realised that among all of us, the most deserving is Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, and we solicited his acceptance to join the 2023 presidential race in the country,” he said.

Shagari added that the decision was taken based on general consultation across the country and the belief that if Tambuwal becomes the President of Nigeria, there would be peace, unity and prosperity in the country.

Also speaking, the state PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, said that the decision to call the governor to join the 2023 presidential race is generally the mandate of the PDP supporters in the state.

Other stakeholders at the meeting included Sen. Danbaba Danbuwa (PDP-Sokoto), Alhaji Abubakar Magaji, Sokoto Assembly Deputy Speaker, and Alhaji Umarun Kwabo, among others.

Ikoyi Building Collapse: Masari, Ganduje, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, other North West govs visit Lagos, say high rise structures important but shouldn’t cost lives [Photo]

Governors of the North West region have described the collapse of a high rise in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State as “unfortunate” but admitted that building such structures in megacities is inevitable.

The governors made the comment during a condolence visit to their Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu following the incident which claimed over 40 lives.

“We are here representing governors of North West to physically come to condole with his Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, families of the deceased and the entire Lagos community on the unfortunate incident that has happened,” Chairman of the North West Governors’ Forum, Aminu Masari, said during the visit.

“We pray to God that this kind of thing will not happen again. On behalf of the people of North West, accept our sincere condolences and sympathy.

“We cannot escape high rise buildings in Lagos but we must ensure that it does not cost lives and properties of people.”

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Government, the Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, also expressed happiness with the setting up of a panel of inquiry to look into the incident which took place earlier in the month.

According to him, the move shows the resolve of the Lagos State Government to unravel the cause of the building collapse.

“We are happy that the governor has taken immediate action to show concern about what happened. We are also happy that he appointed an independent technical panel that will examine and find out what actually happened in order to avoid future occurrences,” Ganduje said.

“We appreciate Governor Sanwo-Olu’s effort and condole with him and the people of Lagos state, particularly the families of those who lost their lives.”

On his part, Sanwo-Olu thanked the governors for the visit, saying that the incident and others in the state have also come with “lessons”.

“We have had various degrees of tribulations and very difficult moments for us as a state and there have been lessons learnt. We are all aware of the investigation into the collapsed building,” the governor added.

“It gladdens me to know that while Lagos is grieving, we are not alone. That is why I am excited and happy that some of my senior colleagues and brothers have come here to express solidarity and to also sympathise with the government and people of Lagos State.”

Don’t vote for parochial leaders, Tambuwal warns Nigerians

The Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday urged Nigerians to avoid voting parochial leaders as the go to the polls in 2023.

He urged Nigerians to look out for and vote for politicians who are versatile and friendly with fellow Nigerians across all geo-political zones to foster national unity.

The governor said this in a keynote address he delivered at the 4th annual criminal law review conference of the Rule of Law Development Foundation with the theme: ‘Judicial updates and legislative developments in criminal law: Criminal procedure law, criminal policy and evidence,’ in Abuja, on Monday.

Tambuwal further said, Nigeria does not need a “parochial and provincial politician”, but “an incorruptible leader who understands that the best way to fight corruption is by personal examples.”

  • For the PDP, the North of Atiku, Saraki and Tambuwal, has it

For the PDP, the North of Atiku, Saraki and Tambuwal, has it

    By Mideno Bayagbon

For the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the South of Nigeria, when it comes to the 2023 presidential elections, hands are raised up, in total surrender! Forget the recent election of former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, a Middle belter, as the new chairman of the party. Under normal circumstances, that election would have been a pointer to where the PDP wants to zone its presidential slot to: Southern Nigeria. But except something dramatic happens in the immediate near future, the hope of the PDP fielding its presidential candidate from the South is, currently, a pipe dream. The settled decision is that the PDP will field a northerner, no matter from what zone its main rival, the the All Progressives Congress (APC) picks its candidate from. The focus of the strategic thinkers of the party is on how to present a united front that is solid enough to defeat the ruling APC in the elections of 2023.

It is true that some aspirants in the south have subtly and even overtly indicated interest in running for the office. Two South South Governors, Nyesom Wike and Udom Emmanuel have joined a few South Easterners in showing half interest in vying for the office. The Distinguished Anyim Pius Anyim, a former Senate President, has vowed to contest for the office whether the PDP zones the office to the East or not. How this will play out eventually is up for conjecture. The feeling is that the former Secretary to Government of the Federation is positioning high while hoping to be picked for the vice presidential slot. The party’s political king makers, spoken to are still at sea, without a clue whether Peter Obi wants to run for the office or again wants to position for the office of Vice President to any northern candidate the party will throw up.

Above, notwithstanding, it is an open secret in the party that Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike has a seemingly solid arrangement with Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal, to pair up to vie for the office. But Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, current governor of Delta state has his eyes on either going back to the Senate and working to emerge as Senate President or fight it out with Wike and Emmanuel to be vice president to a Tambuwal or Atiku. That is, if the party zones the VP position to the South South zone.

What is, however, becoming very clear in the party, is that leading aspirants have emerged out of about seven northern candidates who are angling for the position. The three leaders who have emerged in the race are Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Abubakar Saraki and Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal. But for his age, which many currently see as a huge draw back, the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, would have been head and shoulders above Saraki and Tambuwal. Nevertheless, it is as if a repeat of the 2014 presidential primaries of the party is going for an encore, as the then three leading candidates are yet the three front runners as the road to the race shortens.

Atiku Abubakar will be 76 in 2023, and should he win the election, he will be 80 years old in 2027 when he will be due for reelection. Many leaders in the PDP are worried that though he is still seemingly very strong for his age, they ask if an old man is what Nigeria needs now to confront the many hydra-headed problems which the government of General Muhammadu Buhari has foisted on the nation. While most acknowledge that, with his pedigree, an Atiku presidency will likely throw up a mixture of solid professionals and capable politicians to take hold of strategic points of the economy, they nonetheless still nurse doubts about the impact his age will have on governance. This is where a Bukola Saraki and Aminu Tambuwal come into serious reckoning.

Bukola Saraki, no doubt has had his eyes on the presidency for a long time. He has tried to build a formidable structure, nationwide, in preparation for the primaries which are just a few months away. Among his many strategic thrust include building a team of like minded Nigerians who came out, recently, to claim they are bent on rescuing Nigeria from the deadly morass into which it has sunk with the seemingly nepotistic administration of the current occupier of Aso Rock. Though he has tried not to show his hands there, it is nonetheless clear to political observers that should he fail to win the candidacy of the PDP, this will be a platform he hopes to use to try and achieve his ambition.

The group without a clear ideological leaning is bent on wresting power from the old oligarchs of the north represented by President Buhari. The fear among this group is that the country can break if no urgent measures are taken to keep it one. That is why there have been attempts by them to make it a national movement. But as at the last count, it is still heavily dominated by politicians in the middle belt and the core north generally.

But two major issues stand in Saraki’s way. First, he is currently without a home base. Kwara, where he was once king has been swept from under his feet. The Otoge Movement which his enemies in Aso Rock and in Kwara sponsored against him had such a devastating effect that in large part of the state, those who used to hail him now openly call for his crucification.

Also, though he lays claim to the Fulani heritage, and though he is a moslem, he is still viewed with suspicion in some sections of the north who do not fully accept him as one who will go all out to protect the interest of the elites packaged as the interest of the north. They see him more as a Yoruba man than as a Fulani even though he has in recent years tried to play down his name Bukola in preference for Abubakar. But as a former governor and a former Senate President, there is no doubt that Saraki has build a large friendship base across the country that he can depend on to run for the office.

Aminu Tambuwal is another kettle of fish altogether. He is one of the aces the system in the north is holding close to its chest. He has had his eyes on the presidency for the past ten years or so. He had to be persuaded to take the governorship of Sokoto state before the 2014 primaries so that the north can present a united front behind Buhari. With his major pedigree as Speaker of the House of Representatives, the below par performing governor of Sokoto state, as stated earlier, pushed his luck too in the 2018 PDP primaries but was defeated by Atiku Abubakar who had some Generals whose intervention at the primaries helped to sway it to the former Vice President. Before then, Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, who thought he had the party in his pocket because he was the major financial of its operations, and also because he had a large swathe of the party executives on his side, had wanted to swing it to the Sokoto state governor.

Tambuwal has since concentrated his efforts in building a core group of supporters in the north. All former and current National Assembly members receive one Tambuwal largesse or the other on a regular basis as a way of building a core of loyalists who can help swing the critical, deciding votes during the party’s primary, coming up in the next few months.

Tambuwal of course has tried to build a group of loyalists in most critical sectors of Nigeria’s political economy. He has tried to even put in place a group of journalists too who will look after his interest in the media. He is positioning as the candidate of the core north and his chances may not be affected by the lack of significance his administration has made in the affairs of Sokoto state.

What will shock people as the days go by, is that should the road become too rocky for him in the PDP to achieve his ambition, Tambuwal, who is a governor under the PDP can easily switch and position himself in the APC to vie for the post if eventually it becomes inevitable that it is the north which will present the candidate of the APC for the elections in 2023.

‘You have no place to hide’, Buhari sends warning message to bandits as Tambuwal confirms killing of 43 people in bloody Sokoto attacks

Forty-three people have been confirmed killed in the wake of the attack by bandits on Goronyo township in Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The state governor, Aminu Tambuwal, who made the clarification on Monday said the toll was confirmed after due diligence on figures of those who lost their lives to the market attack that occurred the previous day.

While receiving the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahaya, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Governor Tambuwal had said the bandits killed about 30 people.

“The number of people that died in Goronyo; I did say it was above 30. I was not categorical about the figure,” he was quoted as saying in a statement by his media adviser, Muhammad Bello.

“We just finished a meeting with some stakeholders and I have confirmed that we lost 43 people, unfortunately to that incident. May God Almighty have mercy on their souls.”

In his reaction to the killing, President Muhammadu Buhari sent a tough warning to bandits, saying their clock of ultimate destruction was ticking and they would no longer have a place to hide.

“The days of the bandits are indeed numbered because the military capabilities of our forces are being boosted by the acquisition and deployment of advanced equipment,” he was also quoted to have said in a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

According to the President, bandits are living in the fool’s paradise of invincibility, but reality will soon dawn on them harder than ever before.

He stressed that the criminals were under desperate pressure because of the intense and sustained air and ground operations against them in their hideouts by the nation’s security forces.

“The cowardly attacks on innocent people by the bandits show a rear-guard action of criminals under pressure,” President Buhari added.

“But they will have no place to hide, and our gallant security forces will not relent in the current offensive to defeat these callous enemies of humanity.”

He appealed to all Nigerians not to despair, saying his administration was more determined to protect Nigerians from murderous criminal gangs that have no respect for the sanctity human of life.

The President also sympathised with the families of the victims and called on the people to continue to be patient as the military strategises on how to crush the bandits.
