Chelsea coach Tuchel explains Abraham axing

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel insists his axing of Tammy Abraham was nothing personal.

Abraham didn’t make the squad for Chelsea’s FA Cup semifinal win against Manchester City.

Tuchel said today: “Everybody is concerned when they’re not in the squad but it’s never an easy decision for me to take. I have a lot of sympathy for him and I can understand that he is worried and sad and maybe angry with me when I make these decisions.

“Sometimes we spend almost an hour talking after the last training which decisions to take and which players we have to leave at home because it’s thin margins which decide.

“Tammy has had this decision now a few times against him which is never personal but this is life at Chelsea sometimes as a player. I hope that he does not get lost in too many thoughts because he knows not to be too concerned about his situation.

“Everything he can do is stay focused and stay with belief because the situation for a striker can change in minutes. We have an important training coming up and my decisions [for tomorrow] are not made yet.”

Fight for your place, Tuchel tells Chelsea striker

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has informed Tammy Abraham to fight for his place.

Abraham was left out of Tuchel’s matchday squad altogether for the goalless draw with Manchester United with Olivier Giroud preferred to the England international up front.

“This situation is totally natural, he has to do exactly what he does; train well, be in a good mood and accept that he is a striker for Chelsea so this is the highest competition in Europe,” said Tuchel.

“When you play for Chelsea, it is a difficult decision I have to take and I am very very happy when I have to take them because it means everybody is on board.

“This is what you sign up for if you are a player for Chelsea, a coach for Chelsea, that these moments arrive.

“There is no other answer to it other than to accept it and be there on Monday to fight for your place in the squad. I am sure he will do it.”

Abraham’s Chelsea contract is up in 2023.

Thiago Silva, Abraham first Chelsea players to pay tribute to Lampard

Thiago Silva and Tammy Abraham were among the first players from Chelsea to thank Frank Lampard after his sacking as manager today.

Silva took to Instagram to thank Lampard for his help during their short stint together.

“I would like to thank you for everything you and your committee have done for me since the day I arrived,” Silva wrote.

“As I told you, it seemed like we had been together for 10 years!! Thank you for everything legend.”

Silva was one of Chelsea’s arrivals in a summer spend of over £200million under Lampard.

Tammy Abraham, who was Lampard’s main striker in his first season in charge, posted a picture of them together, writing: “A role model, a mentor & a great manager. Thank you Gaffer.”

Chelsea forward, Tammy Abraham reveals favourite meal during lockdown

Tammy Abraham has outlined his everyday activity as the lockdown continues although he has admitted cooking food has not been taking up any of his time.

The Chelsea centre-forward appeared on the BBC’s Football Focus programme, detailed how he is remaining active as well as describing his downtime, and he gave his opinion on a well-known African food dish; Jollof rice.

On how he is and how he has been spending time, Abraham said: “I’m good. I’ve just been chilling – legs up, laid back and just been playing PlayStation all day – mixing it up playing FIFA, Call of Duty and Fortnite. I have come so close at winning on War Zone but I haven’t yet.”

He chose Fikayo Tomori as the team-mate he would most like to spend quarantine with due to their shared enthusiasm for playing Monopoly. There does however need to be greater physical activity than that from Abraham to maintain fitness.

“We have a schedule from the club,” he confirmed. “You can mix it up if you really want to. It is going for a run, different types of run, upper-body sessions, lower-body sessions.

“I keep active and any time I have the chance to kick a ball around the house I always take advantage of that and it has been good I have been staying active and fit.”

But when it comes to nutrition, he had an admission to make.

“My sister or my mum or dad cook for me, I am lucky to have them in the house and not have to do it myself.”

Asked to choose between the Nigerian and Ghanaian versions of jollof rice and having been qualified to play for Nigeria through his father before committing his international future to England, his choice was of little surprise.

“Can I cook jollof? Absolutely not but my mum can, so probably the meal I have had most in quarantine has been jollof rice.

“The Nigeria version is my choice to be honest. The Ghanaian one is a little bit more spicy but it is about the flavours, not just about the spice, how it sits in your mouth, how it digests into your stomach.”

Chelsea forward, Tammy Abraham named Premier League Player of the Year

Chelsea’s forward Tammy Abraham was named both the Premier League Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year at the London Football Awards on Thursday evening.

The London Football Awards took place at The Roundhouse in Camden.

Abraham won two awards for his performances over the past 12 months. He became the first player to collect both in one year, with the England international first helping Aston Villa to the Premier League via the play-offs before notching 15 goals so far this season following his return to Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard presented the striker with the main award of the evening while former Blues defender Ashley Cole was in attendance to present the prize for the best player under-21 in London.

Abraham pipped fellow Blue Jorginho to the Player of the Year award, while both Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount were nominated in the young player category.

Both Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes and Frank Lampard had been nominated in the Manager of the Year category, and Bethany England, Erin Cuthbert and Magda Eriksson were all nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year award. Those awards went to Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema respectively.

Nigeria bigger than Chelsea duo Abraham,Tomori – Kanu

Nwankwo Kanu is unmoved following England handing Chelsea duo Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori international call-ups.

Gareth Southgate included the duo in the Three Lions’ squad to face the Czech Republic and Bulgaria in October’s Euro 2020 qualification games, to end the question on where the Chelsea stars will commit their international allegiance.

Abraham, 22, who has been in rich scoring form for Frank Lampard’s side had been capped by the Europeans in friendlies against Germany and Brazil, while Tomori who is also eligible to feature for Canada has played 15 times for English U21’s.

This development, however, did not come as a shock to the Arsenal great as he feels the Super Eagles have array of stars to count on if the duo dumps Nigeria.

“Our problem is that whenever someone starts doing well, we start chasing them which is not bad because other countries do that,” Kanu told Goal.

“I feel we don’t need to force people to play for the country, because Nigeria is bigger than any player.”

  • Lampard reacts to Abraham, Tomori’s England call-up

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard has expressed happiness after England handed Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori international call-ups.

England manager, Gareth Southgate, has called up Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori, for their Euro 2020 qualifying games against Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Abraham and Tomori, who are also eligible to play for Nigeria, have been in impressive form for the Blues this season.

If they accept the invitation and eventually feature in any of the matches, they will not be able to represent the Super Eagles again.

“I’m delighted Tammy Abraham is back in the England squad. He has all the attributes to go there and be successful,” Lampard told reporters at his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash against Southampton on Sunday.

“It will be another step for him and a good challenge for Tammy.”

Lampard added: “Fikayo Tomori deserves it. He has been a dream to work with day in, day out for the last 15 months or so.

“It’s a great step up and it’s in his hands to go there and show what he shows us every day.”

Chelsea duo Abraham, Tomori earn England call up

Nigeria’s duo of Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori were included in a 25-man squad on Thursday for away Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

Canadian-born Tomori however, is getting his first call-up for the English senior national team.

Striker Abraham turned 22 on Wednesday, celebrating in style with the opener in his club’s 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory at Lille.

He is the leading English goalscorer in the English Premier League (EPL).

In spite of making two senior appearances for England in friendlies two years ago, he is also eligible for Nigeria and had said he was undecided about his international future.

Manager Gareth Southgate told reporters he had not discussed the matter with Abraham, and had left it to Chelsea boss Frank Lampard to tell the player he was in the squad.

“We’ve got close to hundreds of players now in our system who are dual nationality,” he added.

“I don’t think it’s ethically right just to give a player a cap to make sure that they can’t play for somebody else.

“Fik and Tammy are in on merit and I’m not going to guarantee that they are going to get on the pitch,” said Southgate. “But they have both been part of our junior system right the way through.

“As far as we are concerned the two boys have been developed through English football and are English players.

“I’m sure they have a huge desire to play for England at senior level.”

Meanwhile Tottenham’s Dele Alli and Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard did not make the cut.

Alli, who has made only four appearances for Tottenham Hotspur since returning from a hamstring injury, was omitted along with fellow-midfielders Lingard and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

There was also no place for Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.

Southgate said he was playing well but the bar was set high and he had lost out to strong competition.

He expected Oxlade-Chamberlain and Alli to challenge for places in coming months, while he retained faith also in Lingard fighting back.

England, who top Group A with four wins out of four matches, play the Czechs in Prague on Oct. 11 and Bulgaria in Sofia on Oct. 14.

Southgate said it was getting increasingly difficult to pick the squad, given the intense competition for places, and some of the choices had been hard to make.

Four Chelsea players feature and the manager praised Lampard, who took over at Stamford Bridge in July, for giving them their opportunities to shine.

“I’ve sat here for a few years and talked about opportunities for young English players,” said Southgate. “It’s a hugely positive step.”

Goalkeepers: Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Leicester), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Michael Keane (Everton)

  • EPL: Abraham will replace Hazard – Willian

EPL: Abraham will replace Hazard – Willian

Chelsea ace Willian is backing Tammy Abraham to succeed in replacing Eden Hazard.

Hazard left Stamford Bridge this summer for Real Madrid after a season that saw him scorew 21 goals across all competitions and set up a further 17.

With the club under a transfer embargo, the burden to replace those goals has been placed on the shoulders of Frank Lampard’s young squad, but Willian believes there are plenty of players capable of carrying it – including Abraham.

“I think Hazard’s exit was a big loss,” the Brazilian told Goal.

“Eden is a player that can make the difference, but I think we have players that can continue to make the difference as well.

“Abraham is playing well at the moment. He is scoring lots of goals and I am very happy for him.

“The young players are doing well. They can improve a lot. I think Chelsea is Chelsea. No matter the players we have, we have to fight until the end in every competition. That’s what we want to do this season.”
